This is the first Army Men game I have ever played but I have to say it did not leave a great impression on me. So you play as Capt. William Blade to take on the evil tan Army and your arch rival Baron von Beige. You play through 20 something missions in several different environments such as sandboxes and gardens in order to obtain victory in the ongoing saga.

For a PS1 title, I do admit that the cutscene work is rather impressive. After every level, you get a fairly detailed cutscene that sets up the next mission and it does pull off the whole you are playing a game about toys fairly well. The mood is very childish and corny which is exactly what you would expect from an army man game so I guess they pulled off what they were trying to get across. Graphically I would say the game was average at best.

The gameplay itself is average at best. It is a lot of strafing and button mashing to shoot down enemies. The whole goal of the game seems to be just don't get hit and if you do it really doesn't matter because you will restart at a checkpoint with full health. Enemies did not present too much of a challenge and the only missions I had issues with I had issues with were the timed missions. The reason for this was it was often not clear what the mission was and who you were targeting. The missions themselves were boring, mundane and a lot longer than they had any business to be. The final fight against Baron von Beige is also long, frustrating and lacked imagination other the dumb ass lava.

I understand fully that I am not the target demographic for this game but I still cannot see how you could find Army Men: Air Attack 2 to be anything more than average just based on game mechanics alone. 4/10 Slightly Below Average.

A refreshing change of pace from the usually horrid Army Men franchise thanks to its top-notch action, improved mission structure, cleaner visuals, and added multiplayer elements.
  2. It'll take more than pretty pictures to get me excited again about playing with virtual plastic toys in make-believe green choppers.

The game is insanely fun and addictive with two players and the single player missions are quite advanced.
