    I adore this game. i loved it on the wii and I'm thrilled it's now on Vita.

    The game has 2 things that make it magical: its unique 2D art and animation, and a beautifully melodic and high energy soundtrack that pushes you onwards even when the gameplay gets samey. The game is very simple go left, right, explore, collect, level up, manage basic resources, get some light mystically    I adore this game. i loved it on the wii and I'm thrilled it's now on Vita.

    The game has 2 things that make it magical: its unique 2D art and animation, and a beautifully melodic and high energy soundtrack that pushes you onwards even when the gameplay gets samey.

    The game is very simple go left, right, explore, collect, level up, manage basic resources, get some light mystically flavoured storytelling, and mainly fight. You're collecting swords with crazy and inventive special moves throughout the game, and testing them out on all manner of incredibly designed and animated creatures & monsters. Like Okami, the game is inspired by traditional Japanese art and mural painting, and it really does feel like a painting come to life in a video game.

    Very few games have this much charm. I rate it very highly indeed as one of my few keepers this last game generation.    … Expand

    Combat is fast, with responisve controls, but I'd appreciate if the enemies had less HP and more tricks up their sleeves, since it takes unreasonable long time to take down most enemies even when you are clearly superior and they can't put a scretch on you. Some enemy types are rather annoying to deal with like that, they can't harm you, but will happily deflect most of your attacks. Not much fun to be had then.

    Boss fights on the other hand are quite different and much more enjoyable, since each comes with its own playstyle. The pinnacle of combat for me were the second endings of each character, which are super fast paced and 90% of attacks ends up witch clash of the blades. Kisuke's 1st/3rd ending boss fight also had a nice emotional drive to it.

    What was really disappointing is the repetivnes of the game: Locations are greatly copy/pasted, and you are required to basically just run back and forth through them with random fights thrown in more than I'd care for the playtime gets ridiculously inflated with that. Also inventory navigation/use could be more user-friendly if you want to use multiple items, you have to re-open the inventory for every single one.

    This being considered a metrodivania game, I'd expect gaining new abilities throughout the game, but you gain access to the new areas simply by obtaining a specific sword. And the swords, in essence, are all pretty much the same, thus the gameplay does not evolve a bit over the course of game, which is a real shame.

    For a metroidvania game on Vita, I'd say the Guacamelee! is a better choice. But when you play a Vanillaware game, you play it mostly for the art.    … Expand

    Art is gorgeous. Gameplay is fast, fun and deep. Stories of characters are well written. And game has a LOT of post-game content after you finish both main stories (those took me around 20h), icluding alternative endings.

    Ignore "professional game critics" giving this excellent game score of 78 just because its not AAA title or some smartass wannabe indie fad.

    TL;DR - PLAY IT!

    10 out ot 10!

    I'm an absolute fan of high quality 2D games. This game delivers in every single aspect: smooth gameplay, breath-taking sprites, sounds etc.

    I almost bought a Wii just to have the oportunity to play this game alone, i'm glad that I have a PSV and can play it now!

    So far, I've played about 6 hours with Momohime and enjoying every single minute of it!

    Well i see people like this game, but it's ok. Problem is, that you don't go around killing stuff. You run and run and run, and then you have a one scene brawl with some enemies, and then you run some more. IF you fight constantly and have to be on your toes, that's different. In this manner, it's boring to just run around and you want to explore something and then COMBAT starts which hasWell i see people like this game, but it's ok.     This kind of games (triple A quality 2D) are very scarce... If you own a PSV and didn't had the chance to play the original version on the Wii, do yourself a favor: PLAY IT NOW!     Beautifully drawn detailed graphics and animation that has to be seen in motion. Music that goes well with fast combat which will be your main job to do and with 108 blades with various abilities and special moves available it will be fun. Different story with unique bosses and several endings for each character.
    Almost forgot that you can cook traditional japanese dishes. Simply delicasy.

    Definitely one of the most visually stunning videogames ever created, Muramasa Rebirth is an absolute joy to play with a beautiful soundtrack, gorgeous environments, and gripping gameplay. It can get repetitive if played in long bouts, and the story can be very vague at first, but this game definitely shines as one of the must-plays of the PS Vita.

    Muramasa is excellent game to spend time with on your Vita. It has bright vivid colors, action and a nice soundtrack.

    Do keep in mind that this game does not include English audio, but it does have the required subtitles. Since I mostly play JP- audio anyway this does not bother me and as such did not impact my rating for the game.

    This game is perfect for the Vita. It has simple controls and a simple but tight level up system that is fun to tinker with. The Vita shines when there is a game that fits the pacing and mechanics of a handheld. I am not a heavy jrpg person but it works perfectly for an older gamer with slow fingers and a love for great design.

    I said Persona 4 Golden alone was a great excuse for a PSVita. Well, Muramasa Rebirth is another great gem of PSVita. The art and the pace of such lovely Vanillaware game on the OLED screen of the Vita is art for your eyes.

Definitely one of the most beautiful games I've played and the Vita's screen makes it look even better. The music is equally great and when combined with the art style creates an amazing atmosphere that fits the game's setting perfectly.

    The gameplay is fun and never gets old (at least for me), though the areas in the game as well as the standard enemies can get repetitive. I imagine this is a turnoff for some people, but I never minded it. The story is simple but interesting. I would have also liked to see one more sword type in the game to vary up the combat a bit more. The game can be challenging on Chaos mode, and there's always the unlockable Fury mode for those seeking even greater hurdles.

    All in all, this is a beautifully made and fun 2d beat-em-up that can be repetitive for some. If there had been more varied areas and enemies I would have given it a perfect score.    … Expand

Indeed, as far as I am concerned, it is the very finest game to hit Sony's underappreciated Playstation Vita yet, and in the process, represents the very pinnacle of action-RPG gaming in the handheld space.

    Now of course, this potentially    Vanillaware's sublime 2D adventure, Muramasa Rebirth is so much more than a simple HD port of the Nintendo Wii's, fabulous Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Indeed, as far as I am concerned, it is the very finest game to hit Sony's underappreciated Playstation Vita yet, and in the process, represents the very pinnacle of action-RPG gaming in the handheld space.

    Now of course, this potentially controversial statement means that if Muramasa has indeed jumped straight to the top of Vita's pecking order, it edges out some truly excellent titles in doing so. Arguably, chief among which, is not only the timeless fan-favourite JRPG, Persona 4 Golden, but even Vanillaware's very own Dragon's Crown too no less. And that is the biggest compliment I can pay this incredible game.

    What with Muramasa Rebirth and the aforementioned Dragon's Crown, Vanillaware are *the* developer to watch right now, and given the Japanese studio's record of combing gorgeous artwork with deep, addictive gameplay, I only hope that they continue to support Sony's handheld in the future.     Pretty good game, felt like this game benefited being a handheld hack and slash game. Buttery smooth action that is very addictive and hard to put down once you get the flow going. The weapon leveling up system was very simple, yet kept me interested to leveling up to get new secret art moves.     The first thing you'll notice is a breathtaking visualization. When you get used to the gameplay, you'll understand that it's pretty addictive. All the game mechanics are rather simple, but they work well together. The game is advised to any Vita owner.

It blends fast action with minimalist RPG elements, all while delivering an absolutely gorgeous art style seasoned with tasteful japanese mythology and lore. One thing I found particularly amazing is the depth. The campaign and mechanics can be skimmed over allowing tourist to pass through quick and yet there is enough depth in this game thatI'm not sure what to say about this game. It blends fast action with minimalist RPG elements, all while delivering an absolutely gorgeous art style seasoned with tasteful japanese mythology and lore. One thing I found particularly amazing is the depth. The campaign and mechanics can be skimmed over allowing tourist to pass through quick and yet there is enough depth in this game that anyone willing to put the time in can find ample rewards to be claimed well through and after the first play through.     == Japanese-only Voicing. Not a problem for me (I prefer originals over bad redubs) but for some people this will absolutely kill the game for them.

    == Weapon customization is...ok. There are two major weapon types (Sword, Longsword) and then a bunch of special abilities and passive effects. The value of this system is heavily dependent on the difficulty of the game, and in many places you're "forced" to give up your favourite effect because the damage on the Sword isn't high enough. Unless you like hitting brick walls with a butter knife.

    -- Backtracking. It gets slightly better near the end of the game, but as early as the FIRST LEVEL you're forced to go forward (fine), beat a boss (fine), and then walk all the way back through the area you just went through.

    -- Some of the midgame environments are duplicates of the early game environments.

    TL:DR

    It's a pretty darn good game, but the $40/$35 price tag keeps me from just recommending it to everyone. Arguably a must-buy for PSV owners, but not much of a reason to pick it up for people who don't own a PSV yet.

    One of the best 2D games ever !

    I never played the Wii version but i buy a PSV for this game and Persona 4 Golden. And i don't have any regrets !

    A much-needed port for a game that otherwise would've been restricted to the comparatively small Wii audience, the lush graphics of this side-scrolling action game find a comfortable home on Vita's rich AMOLED screen.

    Gameplay-wise, this game generates an incredible audiovisual experience that is entrancing on its easier modes and engaging as the player raises the difficulty,    A much-needed port for a game that otherwise would've been restricted to the comparatively small Wii audience, the lush graphics of this side-scrolling action game find a comfortable home on Vita's rich AMOLED screen.

    Gameplay-wise, this game generates an incredible audiovisual experience that is entrancing on its easier modes and engaging as the player raises the difficulty, accommodated by a balanced, well-designed combat system that works on a fair punishment and reward system. A lot of things are not entirely clear about some of combat's "fine-print" mechanics, these aren't readily necessary until Fury mode is unlocked (only after a full playthrough on Chaos mode, the harder option), and give enough time for the player to make these discoveries/developments on their own so as to not be a concern. From outset at the tutorial, the combat is also quite simple in learning but requires enough practice and attention to accommodate a large skill range from its playerbase. Certain artistic choices also serve to enhance gameplay effects, such as variable mixes of the background music that fluidly escalate upon entering battle.

    Story-wise, the two characters are fairly well-illustrated. This reviewer has his qualms about the Momohime storyline, although it has its charm in a few well-hidden surprises and developments in its characterbuilding and climax(es; there are three endings to each storyline). The Kisuke storyline stands out as being engaging on an emotional level, as the stakes are well-set and the story paced in its progression. The characters in Kisuke's storyline also felt like they possessed all the right qualities, distinguishing them into a colorful cast and helping them serve as the ideal vehicle to convey their individual struggles and purposes. (Don't worry; this review is spoiler-free) There's a point in the game that you're charging up the snowy mountains in Hida as Kisuke after a pivotal story cutscene, and the combination of multiple factors (the beautifully-illustrated scenery, noticeable increase in fight difficulty, story elements, and the beautiful music that decorates this climb ["Seasonal Beauties" in the soundtrack]) created a strong memory for this reviewer that won't be soon forgotten.

    From the Wii version, a couple subtle things have been improved, the most apparent being Aksys' newly translated script, meant to match the original more closely. Some other tweaks exist, such as an assignable jump button as opposed to relying solely on the d-pad's up button to jump, but it may not be enough to justify a new purchase from any owners of the Wii version, exceptions being avid fans or anyone wanting access to the new partially-released DLC episodes (which are quite reasonably priced; $4.99 at time of posting on PSN, mere weeks after the first episode's release). The game is quite accurately a "rebirth," straying far from a complete reincarnation or redevelop.    … Expand

    I spent almost 40 hours playing this game and despite liking it a lot, I have to admit that it misses a few right steps.

    The game is beautiful! The art design of the entire game, environments, animations, bosses and heroes is utterly amazing! The soundtrack also helps to make you feel invested in it.     But the game suffers a lot from repetition. Levels, music, enemies and even dialogue. This ruined a lot of my enjoyment over time. It also "forces" you to grind to get all the endings, without actually giving you a good reason to, since the main story basically sucks. The DLC has some good tales though, but ultimately gets dull, as not all DLC pieces are fun to play.

    In the end, this is a good game where you can spend hours and hours playing, but after you're done with it, you probably won't come back. Very easy to recommend it though, for the battle system and art design alone!    … Expand

The controls are absolutely spot on perfect and it is very very easy to just put this game on and lose yourself in it. It has a somewhat good story, but the gameplay is what keeps me coming back for more. I simply love it.

    Call me old fashioned, I've been in this industry from the NES. I adored games like final fight, streets of rage and golden axe. Now, with the Vita, we can play a game that has all of that, but is longer and has a satisfying leveling system.

    I love aksys games and the majority of the games they make, but this didn't keep me that happy. It is the most repetitive game I've ever played, seriously. The locations look the same, the enemies look the same the only difference is the boring boss battles. I admit it is fun to play around with the blades, but not enough to make it the type of game it wants to be. I could just sit there and stare at them, they all look hand-painted and must have taken most of the developments time to make them i'm guessing. The length of this game is about 15 hours I'd say and you can be a male/female character to play again with a different story but it is the same exact thing. I mean really It's the same thing but on the opposite side of the map with different bosses.

    If you like repetition and beautiful maps to play on, this might be your game. Hell, if your more into japanese lore than me, this might be your game. It wasn't mine. 7/10.    … Expand

    Just excellent, i played just a couple of hours on the wii and it was a must have for me, odin sphere was also great but the speed improvement in the battles makes this game the greatest from vanillaware until i play dragon's crown.

    As a note, the 4 dlc that costs almost the same as the game (digital version) were very disappointing for me

There are tons of swords to forge for both characters, but not much of a variety in style, they all look different from one another but its either, a long or short sword, I was expecting more weapons such as pole arms, dual wield and other types of weaponry with different combos. Boss fights are the best thing about the game, they all have their own style of fighting and its fun to hack away at a big a$$ monster. Replayability is also a feature as there are many 'evil caves' that require high levels but not restricted, you can enter them at any level if your a skilled player but a bit of grinding is necessary and rather annoying, as I pointed out there are not enough enemy encounters, you can be running through 5 or 6 areas before a fight and it might just turn out to be a pheasant... Story was good but didn't seem interesting enough for me.
    Overall a great game that's worth playing a few times over, however there are things that could have been easily added to make the experience more exhilarating.    … Expand

    Muramasa Rebirth is a great 2D-action/RPG on vita with artistic design and amazing backgrounds and soundtracks but why forcing many random encounters. leveling up is only necessary to equip specific sword and no NG+ cry emoticon AKsys broke my heart

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was developed by Vanillaware, meaning the game is extremely beautiful.

    The beginning of Kisuke's story doesn't seem like a big deal, a guy who lost his memories, but after arriving at his old home and then finding Torahime, they caught me. And Act 6 in particular I really liked it, but it's a shame how they had little impact on scenes that were supposed to be impactful story-wise. Anyway, after that, the story totally interweaves and Act 7 is very good too. And at the beginning of the final act, there is a cutscene of the two at the spa that incites some erotic things lol. But Torahime's death caught me, slightly emotional and seeing the pissed-off Kisuke was good. The final cutscene and resolution of the story is very good I would say.
    I saw the other 2 finals, and the second one I thought was okay and the third one I liked (even if I don't understand the 'context' very well).

    Seeing practically nothing from the night that Kisuke loses his sword was a waste, and at least 1 flashback of him and Torahime could have too.

    And the concept behind the protagonist's strength was very cool, interconnecting with the story that at the end of death the master of a forgotten technician (Orobo) merged part of his soul in Kisuke saving.

    His gameplay I think is excellent for notebooks.
    I played the entire game on Chaos (Hard) taking out 2 bosses, Yuna and the blue dragon.

    The soundtrack is mediocre in general, but the game has at least 100% VA (everything is very few lines)

    And the Mohohime route I played very little, so I don't have much opinion.    … Expand

    It is very similar to 'Ghost Online,' a Korean 2D RPG game.
    Speed is the most important actionRPG game.
    The main character is a ninja who fights with a devilish sword.
    And a young boy named Keisuke.

    If there is something Vanillaware knows how to do well, it is to immerse yourself in its stories thanks to its beautiful artistic design. This game also adds a very interesting and fun gameplay.
