I absolutely loved it then, loved it when I revisited it around 10 years later using an emulator and now…another 10 years later…being able to play it using an actual PlayStation again, I love it even more. I was concerned that maybe I would be turned off by it or it wouldn’t be as good as I remember due to the crude graphics, more linear environments and sort of cheesy dialogue but it’s as charming as it’s always been in my opinion.

Levelling up additions and your Dragoon make for a fun and addictive gameplay loop. I love how the systems are interconnected. For example, you level up additions to do more damage but also gain higher SP per hit for your dragoon levelling. The magic system is straight forward which I enjoy. I always felt like it was needlessly complicated in a lot of Final Fantasy games. Some people might want a bit more depth in the magic system but it’s not a hang up for me.

The art direction for the backgrounds actually still looks quite pretty and the animations for dragoon transformations and dragoon magic are a show case of that dramatic anime style you might see in Dragon Ball Z. The characters are all pretty standard archetypes but in a fun way. Best $10 you’ll spend.

It had a ton of audio and visual issues along with combat glitches, but the newest path fixed all those issues for me and now the game is the best version it’s ever been. Wonderful for those that already love it and ready for those who never played it, this is a classic game made better with updated graphics and background visuals. A must play for fans of the OG game and newbies alike. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. So, if you like classic style JRPGs like Xenogears and FF7-FF9 well, this takes the high fantasy of FF9, mixes in "additions" which are effectively QTEs and get stronger, more or less they're where the Xenogears comparison comes in with its combo system not being as time-sensitive.

Also, I bring up FF7 because, well... at least one character gets replaced entirely. So it's not like "Aerith'ing" a character, more or less it'd have been like if FF7 brought in a clone for Aerith in the OG version.

This game will eventually allow you to summon dragons, though that's really only good for the Magic wielders which I think the top 3 are the women? And the top physical titans are well, men, except some women are faster and their additions can do as much or more damage than their male counterparts.

Either way, I highly encourage anyone unfamiliar with the title to test it out. I really do. It's worth the play. Not perfect, as I hold both FF8 and Xenogears in higher regards, but I also place FF8 above FF9 and FF7, so take that and do with my opinion what you will.

PS- look up how to get the "gold" dragoon eye once you get.... I'm just gonna call him Dave The Barbarian. So, male, barbarian aesthetic, you'll earn a character like that and then look up gold dragon eye. Just... damage, lots of damage. Also, extremely missable.

So far, i'm about 10 hours into the game and while I can't really judge the story itself, the gameplay feels like it leaves a lot to be desired.
