THIS is what a MODERN JRPG should look like! Sadly instead, most JRPGs nowadays still look like Nintendo Wii Games

If you love JRPGs, if you love Anime like characters, if you love huge Worlds and compelling story telling with a lovable cast of characters. Then you've come to the right place.
Tales of Arise is one of the best JRPGs and Best Looking JRPGs I've placed in years.
I can't recommend this game enough.

Overall a very enjoyable game. Alphen and Shionne relationship carries the story a lot, and I have to say that i liked their interactions very much, they were intense yet simple and realistic.

The last part of the game felt a bit rushed, especially the final battle, the plot twist wasn't really needed after all the hours of playing! I felt it as very unnecessary. Hope they'll keep on improving in the next Tales of, especially in giving the world a bit more life or depth.

It should have included the option to play as a 2-player local co-op... most if not all Tales of games had local co-op and I would have loved to play this with a friend. 2. Too much particle/flashy effects, snappy camera cuts and damage numbers cluttering up the screen when you have a full party in combat. The game is fine with just Alphen and Shionne, but when you recruit your 3rd and 4th character (plus reserve characters) the battle screen looks like a crappy version of Jackson Pollock painting or visual vomit. Combine that with the non-stop screaming and yelling each character does over each other...it's not art it's a headache. Plus, there is no option to turn off the battle cries without completely muting the voiceovers. Ughhh. This could have been the best tales game, but that honor still goes to Symphonia and Vesperia in my opinion. Expand

The game overall was an incredible experience from start to finish, and I have hopes that they can continue to improve upon this strong basis in the future (whether that be building upon this good new framework they established with this game, or going back to a more traditional style but incorporating several of the good aspects from this game). As long as one plays this game with a mindset open to an Tales experience that tries something new, I think there is a lot to enjoy from this one. I highly recommend this game. Expand

The art style and soundtrack are outstanding as well.

Let's talk about the combat. Maybe slow at start, but later on you get one of the best Action RPG combat system to date. It feels like hack and slash but keeps every aspect of RPG. Truly great combination. Also, the lengh of the game is exactly as it should. Overall, the excellent presentation of characters and the fantastic combat make this game a masterpiece. Highly recommend it.

To say I’m addicted to this game is an understatement. The gameplay is glorious, there’s so many layers and choices. Graphically it’s beautiful, both in environments and character design. The amount of content available is plentiful. I’ve never been a huge lover of JRPGs but this game has broke that trend.

Então o que eu vi aqui, me surpreendeu de uma forma que nenhum jogo me surpreendeu desde o lançamento de NieR Automata e Replicant.
O enredo consiste no seguinte.

The gameplay is superb, you can control every character, and create your party before battles. Each character has completely different movements and feels very different to play with. The fights can be very challenging but also fair, you don't need to grind for anything, just play the story and some of the side stories, and done, you are always at a great level for the challenges of the game.
The game is very long, even more so if you play it to its fullest, there are many locations, many side quests, and the story itself isn't very short. So if you love long experiences and amazing gameplays, you have to play this masterpiece.

The combat is really good, there are plenty of little things to play around with like stats, abilities, equipment, cooking, fishing, plenty of side quests.

The visuals are really nice. The music is very good. Character development is pretty well done. The characters themselves are amazing design and personality. If you have been looking for a new rpg to play and have a good amount of time on your hands, you should really consider Tales of arise. IMO this is the best tales game in the series.

With that being said it is the first and the last Tales game I will ever pick up. The story is interesting and very anime, but in a good way! The anime tropes of a main character with a mysterious background is done decently and the overall journey the characters go through was compelling. The manga style cutscenes were a welcome change for me as well.

Gameplay and combat was quite fun. Combat has so many options and it was satisfying to pull off cool combos and air juggles. It reminds me of Devil May Cry but not as deep. The special moves with other party members were a spectacle but may get a little repetitive towards the end for some people. Additionally, you can play as the other party members, which is great for varying play styles and variety in general. Special shoutout to the boss battles too, most of them were grand, unique and a great challenge.

The main downsides I think were the side quests and enemy type variety. Most side quests I found to be repetitive fetch quests like “kill x amount of enemies in this particular area”. It would’ve been great if the side quests weren’t as repetitive. The enemy variety were not great and were mostly the same in every region in the game just reskinned into a different colour to suit the scenery/climate of the region.

All in all, it’s a great JRPG, I would recommend it, and it has been out for a while so you could probably find it for a great price.

This, however, is quite different at first I thought I'll get tired or somehow forgot about it but it's addicting from start to platinum. I beat the game on hard difficulty and it's the best thing ever. The 2nd boss was hell to me and died a lot of times because I lack resources at that time but after it everything is easy. Even the fishing is fun.

The combos in this game are really well thought of. Some spells or skills really jive with other skills/artes to fill up the break gauge and aerial combos for the main character is amazing but I like the mage more though some spells are a little bit overpowered the thunder wall and celestial hammer carried me at the last section of the game super OP also the Ice aerial skill is incredible you'll stay in the air a long time.

The story is okay for me probably a 7/10 and it's a little bit predictable. The OST is really good from the intro to the battles everything is amazing it even has different intros when you reach a certain part of the game.

I'm really glad I tried this I was skeptical of buying it on launch because of my past experience but this was really great.

Also, the performance on PS5 is amazing. During some fights later in the game, there are easily a hundred effects at the same time and I still always kept the 60 fps.
Story (8/10): It's good, but I'd compare it to DQ11. Most of the things happening remind you of other games or animes, there are a few unique aspects and it is a fun to enjoy story, but it's not the best.
Gameplay (10/10): I love the combat system that has a LOT of variation and mechanics. Playing this game on "hard" forces you to really understand them. It's also the best real time combat system I've seen so far in a JRPG. Can't be compared to the previous entries or FFXV at all, it's really superior.
The bonding with your companions makes fun, the optional dialogues are always enjoyable and there really is nothing I can complain about. Every character feels different during combat too, even though I preferred to not switch the character during fight. I usually used different characters in different chapters.

I went into Tales of Arise knowing it was a game from a series I'm unfamiliar with, and found a rather fun action RPG with a gameplay style that reminds me a little bit of Xenoblade, a very good thing. The combat takes some time to get used to, but once you do, you're in for a treat! The battles are fast paced, flashy, and you have a lot of tools and attacks at your disposal to use across 6 characters. The fights are fun and addicting, so grinding doesn't feel like a hassle in this game, a huge positive for a long JRPG. Leveling up your characters is intuitive and easy to do. The only problem with the combat is that I feel like the bosses are a massive difficulty spike compared to normal enemies. I know it sounds obvious, but the spike feels a lot higher than what you were preparing for leading up to the boss. Otherwise, the combat is top notch!

The story and characters are fun and unique as well. I'm not too versed in the Tales games, but as far as my understanding goes, the character interactions are vital to character progression, giving you an incentive to watch and listen to extra character cutscenes to get to know these characters better, something I do appreciate. It adds more layers to the world.

Overall a very enjoyable JRPG experience and got me interested to play more Tales games! A for sure recommendation for any lover of JRPGs!

Combat was quick, responsive, and I really enjoyed the difference in the characters styles and how they worked together.

The story was a joy, and I loved the greater messages it imparted and was happy to discuss the themes with my son as he player.

If you have enjoyed tale sin the past, but found the last few entries to be a bit lacking, I think this will revitalize your enjoyment of the series.

This is a gorgeous game! The environments, enemies, character design and combat effects are great. It's a stunning experience featuring soothing scenarios and bleak dungeons.
While I initially didn't like the main cast, I ended up loving them towards the end. Character development is strong, well-constructed and pays off in the conclusion. By the end of the game I was almost part of the group and I think the more mature approach in the writting is the reason.

The story is also beautiful! It is a very long game, but throughly well-paced (except for the second half) and genuinely well told. There are so many nuances to each thing you uncover in the story and so many surprises and plot twists that it's hard to talk about it without spoiling anything. But trust me, it is a very deep and beautiful story, with nice character interactions, a good message and a charming ending.

But the true highlight of Tales of Arise is the combat. My god, it is fantastic! Fun, fast, addicting and a bit confusing, but powerful! It's definitely one of the best battle systems I've ever played in an Action JRPG game. It might not be as tactical as the likes of Vesperia, but it's definitely more engaging.
You get to feel that through boss fights. They're epic and amazing. Each one plays differently and you have to adapt to it. It's a shame that with so many things happening at the same time, battling a few of them (especially fights against the lords) can be quite confusing, with some of them being damage sponges. But they're great, nonetheless.

And while I may be gushing over this game, it does comes with a few notable flaws.
The worst one is how generic it may seem at first. It actually took me a long while to finally get hooked, but when it did it hit hard! I'm not sure what it is, but there's something holding this game back from being truly incredible, in my opinion.
Maybe it's the soundtrack. Good JRPGS are synonymous with fantastic OSTs and this one is just extremely forgettable. Side quests are also a mixed bag. Sometimes you're facing an incredible tough optional boss fight, sometimes you're cooking or collecting hidden owls. It's unbalanced.

I also disliked how they approached the second half of the game. It cuts the pacing of the entire story, slows things down, throws a bunch of exposition on you and stops stuffs you with a lot of dialogue. And I do mean A LOT OF DIALOGUES. It gets really boring before it picks itself back up again.
AND WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE MONEY IN THIS GAME? EVERYTHING IS TOO EXPENSIVE!

Tales of Arise brought back the feeling of experiencing a good traditional action JRPG. It is quite a journey and one that I won't easily forget. Took a while to convince me, but I'm really glad it did.

The music is yet another highpoint and is literally amazing throughout, was totally blown away by it and it is easily 'final fantasy' standard which is the highest praise I can give it, the voice acting I also thought was a very high standard with the main character I instantly recognised the voice, this next gen version running on ps5 is technically one of the most impressive games I have played on the 'new gen' consoles, from on average 1 second load times on changing areas or fast travelling, to everything running silky smooth and I say that playing through the whole game in graphics mode there is a performance option for people that prefer framerate, even in intense fighting with the crazy amount of special effects flying everywhere it ran beautifully, and the whole game looks stunning in 4k, after about 2 hours play I did sit there thinking is the whole game really gonna look this amazing? the answer is yes it does its a full on massive jrpg next gen world, its very impressive. The combat is pretty slow for the first 20 hours of the game, it's still fun but it's definitely way, way better once you get deeper into the game and get way more abilities to use, which is good because you're going to be fighting a WHOLE LOT of the time in Dahna. Battle system is great albeit a little simple but I don’t mind a game being easy, just stick it on moderate if you prefer more of a challenge. Visually stunning, what else can you say about it.

Completed in spot on 40 hours, perfect length, never felt like it was dragging its feet.

Probably won’t go back to older Tales games but damn I’m looking forward to future instalments.

Amazing soundtrack, the story has some very good and interesting twists, characters have good progression and development and the combat is fun and addictive. This game gave some of the coolest and most exciting battles in a JRPG, some of them can be really intense !! I´ll not give it a 10 because I was expecting more from the ending and when you play in the hardest difficulties the dodge system can be a little clunky and the AI of your companions sometimes are not very intelligent and they die too much unnecessarily. Other than that the game is brilliant and definitively one of the best from 2021 and I have played a lot!! Don´t sleep on this game!! It´s beautiful (there´s a chapter that I´ll never forget because of the emotional immersion that I had , feeling sadness and then rage while doing this dungeon, it was superb) Expand

But i got to say they got a lot of things right in fact perfected particularly its combat, graphics, and has one of if not the best replay value and content of a JRPG to date. the dialogue though, it is not the best and many times the characters are awkward. overall from the get go you know that this a big budget game they really did not hold back on this game. its not a perfect game but it is an amazing game and experience. it is very fun and addictive you wouldn't notice that your sre already in 50 hour mark.

Very entertaining entry into the series, although it feels a bit different from your standard Tales game at first and keeps that thread going until the end. Reasonably straightforward trophies as well, I don't platinum many games due to the requirement of difficulty levels meaning multiple play-throughs, this is able to be accomplished in a single play. I look forward to the next entry as always.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Tales series isn’t as popular as the Final Fantasies of the world but nonetheless this installment has the best of the classics along with the new and fresh battle system that is a blast to play. I got it for XB1X. Leveling up is handled nicely once you get it. It breaks away from the traditional way and if your stronger than the monster you won’t get as much. However if your a few levels below a monster you will get a lot more XP. You can chain battles together. The monsters were reused quite a bit but that’s not something I’d RPG lovers are strangers to anyway. The weapon can be made and crafted with material you get from monsters. The setting is basically a slave world so it makes sense that you’d have to make your own weapons and you aren’t able to just buy one already made and nice for you traditionally. The story and characters develop very in depth, and the blend of story gameplay is superb. Toward the end there was so much story and dialogue and me RPG senses were kicking in that the end is near. I must say at that point I was getting a bit impatient due to time constraints and other adult responsibilities so I ended up skipping a fair amount of cutscenes and conversions (with the rb button) so I could just beat it. I’m glad they out the option to skip if you needed to. If it was up to me I’d skip nothing but I had to. It’s a grand story told by a cast down and downtrodden people who were robbed of their history which is something we don’t see all the time and is personally relatable to me. I hope you enjoy this game as much as I have, and I hope the Tales series gets more love out there. Peace! Expand

The nearly 5 year wait to play this game was well worth it. This game is a true work of beauty from beginning to end, giving us a world filled with vibrant colors and majestic environments that always create an exciting feeling of exploration. This color extends to it's wonderful core cast who I loved each and every one of equally, to the point that if you asked me to pick a favorite I'm not sure I'd be able to. Each one is so delightful and watching them grow along the journey meant more to me than the story itself, in fact this may be my favorite full cast of any Tales game yet. Getting used to the change from anime to CG for skits and most cutscenes was an adjustment, but the creators really managed to capture the same anime-style feeling of the preceding games even with the all new style. Speaking of style, this game was stylish in every since of the word. Flashy combos and designs, a new fast paced combat system that still feels familiar, and all sorts of elements that could only be described as 'Something that feels new, but is still a Tales game.' Despite having one of the darkest premises yet, this game still found a way to stay fun and light hearted all the way until the end, leading to an ending I was extremely satisfied with. I have so many praises for this game, and very few complaints. Tales of Arise is now my 4th favorite Tales game of all time behind Graces, Berseria, and Abyss. I loved my journey with these guys, and I can't wait to see what journey the Tales series takes us on next! Expand

The latest entry in the Tale series offers everything loyal fans could have expected, but also has a chance to enamor many newcomers. The story about two heroes from the opposite sides of a conflict joining forces is surprisingly multi-layered, the combat is flashy and satisfying, and the journey leads you across beautiful, varied regions. As for the flaws, I need to mention problems with map legibility and the necessity to grind, but fortunately both issues are occasional. [12/2021, p.68]

Tales of Arise achieved steady progress under the traditional JRPG framework. With a solid plot and refreshing battle, a very good JRPG experience has been created for players. Although the overall quality is very high, the game still has some problems in character creation and story logic, which prevents it from reaching the peak of the JRPG category.
