Jun 22, 2026Marathon showcases Bungie's trademark gunplay with fluid movement, satisfying combat, and a striking sci-fi art style. The extraction-based gameplay creates plenty of tension and rewarding moments, especially for fans of the genre. However, confusing systems, poor onboarding, and an underdeveloped narrative make it difficult to recommend to a wider audience. Marathon is a solid extraction shooter with clear strengths, but its niche appeal and steep learning curve hold it back from greatness.

Its harsh progression and steep learning curve make it difficult to recommend to everyone, but Season 2 adds meaningful improvements, new content and better onboarding that push the game in the right direction.

Apr 22, 2026Deep within Marathon, there lies a shooter that’s simply fantastic—especially in its end-game maps and core weapon mechanics. For hardcore players who find ARC Raiders too easygoing and forgiving and are craving a bloodier experience, this could be a fantastic playground. However, when viewed as an extraction game that constantly demands you risk your efforts, the pieces don’t quite fall into place. It’s completely lacking the warmth and motivation that would draw in casual players or those looking to dip their toes into the genre. It’s a game where ideas with immense potential are crushed under mechanics that unnecessarily overwhelm the player.
