Etrange Overlord is a refreshingly original action JRPG that thrives on its charming cast, heartfelt storytelling, and playful tone, even as its simplistic combat and grind-heavy progression hold it back from true greatness. Its mix of comedy and sincerity creates a memorable journey, supported by inventive ideas like the lane system, though uneven difficulty and underdeveloped mechanics prevent its gameplay from matching its narrative highs.

Etrange Overlord is fun and short, a perfect palette cleanser for those who are looking for a shorter experience. As a character, I like Etrange being a self-serving go-getter who knows what she wants and actively seeks it out. It’s unlike any of Sohei Niikawa’s previous games but takes the best aspects of Disgaea and Rhapsody and combines them nearly seamlessly. However, not everything works; combat is pretty basic yet rarely rewarding, but its use of Lanes offers something just different enough to press onward.

Etrange Overlord is one of the most unconventional RPGs that I've ever played and despite its repetitive gameplay, there's a lot of lighthearted fun to be had as you gradually upgrade your chums and take in all the fun-filled musical moments with its charming cast of goofballs.
