Calamity Angels: Special Delivery is a fun, bite-sized experience. It may make some not too happy about the number of things reliant on your luck and mood, but it was enjoyable.

First and foremost, Calamity Angels: Special Delivery is a comedy game and it delivers (sorry) on that foundation exceptionally well as it'll constantly make you laugh out loud if you don't take it too seriously. Even though it gets repetitive, you'll still make plenty of memories.

Calamity Angels: Special Delivery is a charming new IP that blends board game inspired dungeon crawling with light JRPG combat. Its underdog story and expressive cast carry the experience, with strong voice performances and comedic writing giving personality to nearly every scene. However, shallow systems, repetitive encounters, and awkward quality of life decisions keep it from reaching its full potential. While the foundation shows promise, especially in its character work and unique structure, the overall package feels like a solid first step rather than a fully realized breakout hit.

Calamity Angels: Special Delivery brings some unique ideas and a loveable cast of weirdo characters to the table. I just wish it brought more interesting and engaging gameplay and combat along with it.

The first 30 minutes of Calamity Angels hooked me. The tension system seemed like a great novelty for turn-based combat, and the contrasting character archetypes brought fun personalities. Unfortunately, the game spent the next 10 hours spinning its wheels, forgoing any gameplay development and turning its entire runtime into a mind-numbing loop. If Compile Heart had fully fleshed out its own innovations, Calamity Angels: Special Delivery could have been a compelling game, but as it stands, it is just a shallow and forgettable experience.

There’s some charm here in Calamity Angels: Special Delivery, and I can’t deny that I liked spending time with the cast, but its gameplay keeps getting in its own way. The game has a fun concept and a strong personality, yet the random combat and repetitive delivery loop make it harder to enjoy than it should be. It’s not terrible, but it never rises above being a mildly entertaining JRPG that feels stuck so down below its potential.

Calamity Angels: Special Delivery is an ambitious title that took one-note jokes way too far. A title about deliveries at its epicentre has promise, and the character designs are very enjoyable. Combat has moments where the absurdity all connects, and a wonderful finishing move is shown on screen that always brings a smile, but that smile quickly becomes a twitchy bunch of frustrated nerves when the party will not listen to commands. The constant chatter and disdain from the party is easily annoying, and while the game is only twenty hours, it still feels painful herding them to complete the most basic survival instinct-related things. This constant source of manufactured tension sadly overshadows most of the good on offer here. This courier is anything but dull, but the chaotic frustrations will cause many prospective clients to look elsewhere.
