There’s more work to do with AFL 23, and I’m expecting regular patching for a few weeks yet. However, I can’t sit on my review forever, so what I’ll say is this: The game has already evolved from a disastrous launch to become the finest AFL game ever. That’s a ridiculously low bar to cross, I know, but once Big Ant have brought in the final features and refined the mechanics to fully realise their vision, this will be a truly impressive representation of one of the most iconic parts of Australian culture.

AFL 23 is inconsistent in its attempts to emulate the most complicated sport on the planet. It jags six points by delivering arguably the best gameplay we’ve had, but doesn’t make the distance in serving up a complete, robust package.

When AFL 23 delivers on its on-field vision it’s the best Aussie Rules video game out there, but the lack of execution and content means that it's not quite the contender it could have been.

While AFL 23 is a fun sports game, it however has flaws that can hold the game back.

I had high hopes for this latest AFL video game but unfortunately I don't think a developer will ever be able to create an engaging video gameI had high hopes for this latest AFL video game but unfortunately I don't think a developer will ever be able to create an engaging video game for this sport. The player sizes are way too small compared to the ground size. The game is simply not challenging enough, even on the hardest setting it is possible to waltz right past opposition. The graphics are just ok. Unfortunately too many glitches, for example the wrong coaches. I was bored after 15 minutes. Back to FIFA. Expand

There is no player career mode (a feature of all previous AFL games and most sports games) and no possibility to play online with friends.
The game modes promised at launch; Ultimate Team and Management Career mode are still non-existent a month after launch.
The graphics are poor, the animations are glitchy and the core gameplay is simply not there.
I can not recommend this game to anyone.
