Worms Battlegrounds is the latest game from Team 17, the masterminds of one of my favourite series, The Worms.

The point of the game is as in the series tradition, destroy the opposing team, using a variety of hilariously designed weapons. In Battlegrounds there are over 60 to choose from and I must admit, a lot of them felt like they were forced into the game, you will likely use a fraction of them without even thinking about the rest.

As with most recent versions of the game, there is a dedicated single player mode, along with the various multiplayer options. In Battlegrounds the is a story of sorts designed to push you through the numerous levels. The ”story mode” really annoyed me, mostly because of the consistently gameplay-interrupting female narrator. This whole mode also felt like it was unnecessarily put into the game. It was uninteresting and overall, boring.

Although, the story mode does a good job of introducing to the game’s mechanics but I really don’t think it was necessary. I’m not a huge fan of forced tutorials and I certainly wasn’t a fan of a tutorials in Worms Battlegrounds. For Worms Veterans I’d recommend you jump straight into the multiplayer mode.

Thanks to the introduction of online over the past few years, Worms can be played online and runs pretty well, again retaining the usual formula of games of old. Up to four players can take part in a battle, with modes split across just the two variations. Deathmatch, which has the usual setup, with your various team members spread randomly across the map.

Worms should be played with friends in local and online multiplayer. A lot of time you’ll get thrown into the game against two people who are in the same clan and you’ll get eliminated quickly because friends usually work together so they’ll attack you first, this is very annoying so, get some friends and enjoy the multiplayer experience.

Speaking of local multiplayer, thanks to remote play, you can play with a mix of Dual Shock and Vita and the game does translate really well to the small screen and let us not kid around here, giving some verbal abuse to someone in the same room when you destroy their Worms with a sheep will never get old.

Let’s talk about customization, you can customize your Worm as you like, from the usual name changing, you can also customize their appearance, make a clan logo and a ton of different stuff.

If you’ve never played Worms before(why?) you should definitely pick this one up, it is really fun with friends and in my opinion, multiplayer/local is the only way to play Worms. The inclusion of single player did not benefit this game in any way. However, if you are still playing older iterations, it doesn’t really offer enough to warrant you moving on.

Lastly, the latest itteration of Worms is not a terrible game, it’s a Worms game and that’s it. It doesn’t try to be anything else and that’s good. Seeing how the Worms games do not change over the years raises a question, what are we going to see next in The Worms series? A signle-player third person adventure game? Perhaps a 3D third person tower defense game, sort of like PvZ Garden Warfare–I hope not. Whatever they are going to do, I can’t wait to see it.

Best Worms game since Open Warfare 2 for DS 7 years ago. Online multiplayer is quick and responsive with no lag. Worms is Worms, either you love it or its not for you. This is the best iteration yet with every weapon you could ever want.

Absolutely appallingly bad to the point where I can't be bothered enough to say more. I've never called for a refund before but this takes the cake...

“Battlegrounds” includes some welcome additions (easy to access online play, flowing water, the option of using different types of worms) and some unwelcome additions (background graphics that are hard to tell apart from the foreground) but there is nothing that will change people’s mind about the series one way or another. If you’ve enjoyed Worms in the past you’ll enjoy Battlegrounds, if you haven’t you won’t. It’s as simple as that really.

To me, this Worms was a disappointment when I tried it with my friends. First of all, stages look bad, it's hard to differentiate background from foreground, they look ugly and there are too few.

New weapons aren't attractive at all. Performance feels clunky. I don't know if it's 30 fps or unlocked fps but it doesn't feel fluid at all. While on this game it shouldn't matter

Performance feels clunky. I don't know if it's 30 fps or unlocked fps but it doesn't feel fluid at all. While on this game it shouldn't matter gameplay-wise, it feels like a huge downgrade from locked 60fps older Worms games. It also, somehow, doesn't look ok to me, they should have stayed on 2D with higher definition art.

The only thing I liked is how you can choose worms with different sizes and abilities.

This is my first Worm's game and I have a good time with it. Gameplay is creative and fun. The music suits the game very well. Campaign mode is not impressive so you are left with multiplayer, which is the core of fun of the game. However, the multiplayer does not function well. They have no real matchmaking system, meaning that you will be matched with people randomly. 1v1 is forced to play on Pro setting and Free for all (4 players) is likely unplayable because there is no matching system for that. You have to go to custom match and find the room yourself if you want to do Free for all. Many times, the host can add his friend in the room and we could not know that , so when game start they can corporate with each other and ruin your game. On the other hand, if you have friends to play with you, it is really good game. (I and my friends laughed a lot when someone made mistakes). However, the game will get repetitive very fast because it lacks of content, no RPG element. (The price is very cheap though so I don't want to complain about content)

In summary, Worm battlegrounds got my 7/10 because of creative gameplay and cheap price. However, I would recommend you to buy only if you have some friends to play with. If you don't have anyone, don't buy. (This 7/10 score is only for those who have friends). Also, please take note that the game won't last long for your interest because it lacks of depth.

An absolute disgrace to the worms series. Terrible online with constant buffering. I'll never know why the game thinks it's acceptable to place a full team of worms clustered together so they can be taken out in one hit. Insanely imbalanced, worst worms game I've had the displeasure of playing. 0/10

The worms games are always going to be a mixed bag. The controls are always tank like and this is no exception and visually they are average at best. The campaign mode this time around is lackluster but passable. However the online multiplayer works well and is a lot of fun. From making your own clan to battling it out with complete strangers everything works as it should.

La campagna a tratti rischia di diventare ripetitiva ma quanto meno è ancora possibile affrontare gli epici combattimenti online diversamente che nel fresco WMD

Worms Battlegrounds is an amazing game in my opinion. If you don't know Worms Battlegrounds is a turn based action game where worms need to kill other worms.I didn't play the story mode too much but the story is that there's a hypnotist worm kill him.Know the basic mode is where it's at.First of you can make your worms then you can create your own war with friends I play this mode using myself each turn which is why I like it so much (you can do that in the other ones I think but I didn't play them.) Overall worms battlegrounds is one of the best games for the PS4 which I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for that but that's just how much I like it.Final sentence:the worms are pieces of gum Expand

Technically sure-footed and still a wonderful multiplayer experience. But overpriced and more rehashed than a Cheech and Chong movie sequel. [August 2014, p74]

Strictly on its own merits, Worms Battlegrounds is a fine game. However, weak graphics and a lack of technical innovation really hurt the experience.
