First of all I struggled for a while until I bought it at a sale, got the Imperial Package for my PS4 Pro. My first impressions of the game were mixed but really good, after a while it became a bit monotoneous and then ended pretty cool.

I m playing on the latest patch level of course and I think this game does not deserve a lot of the **** it gets. The level design and artwork is outstanding for genre fans of sci fi and/or warhammer. I m not even a warhammer fan but its really appealing and has a ton of nice details. The gore factor is also pretty cool when you pump bullets into enemies. Same goes to the weapon design. From slashing blades to laser rifles or axes there is much to see. Even dual wielding works decently and can also combine multiple weapon types. This is not often to be seen in nowadays games.

The sound is a blast although the soundtrack is a bit weaker. After all the atmosphere is still top notch. The gameplay is pretty straight forward. You enter levels of different types. Some need you to rescue, some to destroy, some to kill. Variety is is okay but could ve been better. The storyline itself is decent and the cutscenes are state of the art, very nice. The story is not that deep in comparison to genre kings but it is well enough. You pick up loot, you level up and specialize you character. Theres loads of different things you can specialize on!

Fighting is a bit clunky at times but it doesnt deserve the **** it gets. I feel like some people and also magazine reviewers seem overly critical when it comes to that. Yes, sometimes you aim the wrong detail, yes sometimes it makes you run in a wrong direction but its minor and you can control it. If you know what you are doing it is simply not a problem.

Length is okay too. I finished the game with my rifler and some side missions in around 15 hrs I think. I played most missions on normal, hard or hard+1 (forgot the name). Mission grinding does not feel too awardable but its okay.

As a diablo and sci fi fan I m really glad I picked the game up. It could ve used a bit more variety but I liked the gameplay and the bits of story it has. Also it uses all the tech the PS4 has. The gamepads talks to you, the motion light covers your state, the game is also PS4 enhanced and provides 1440p. It has to be mentioned that there are indeed framedrops in special outdoor levels but in general it is smooth and without too much of lagging. For people who want it smooth, they can choose the balanced gameplay then there are no more drops at all.

I highly suggest the game if you like shoot n loot, diablo-ish gameplay and scifi settings. Grab the game at a sale. Also if you dont need specials or cosmetics, just get the basic version and you can save quite a bit of the original pricing.

I really do hope they continue with the series and improve it!

Yes, it is flawed and can become repetitive, but this game has lots of content to give. It is very similar to your standard ARPG.

The gear system may seem a little puzzling but has a purpose. Stats matter most, but there is a generic "power rating" to allow one to progress in the game without relying on lucky drops. It's amazing to see the armies of Chaos come together in a game like this, and the setting it truly dripping with Warhammer ambiance. The graphics are good and the story line is awesome. Requirement to proved email is irksome, but takes minutes (and must be done for lost of games nowadays - what else is new?).

Most ranged and melee weapons of the Imperium are usable (sadly, power fists are not.) There is crafting, customization, PVP, coop, weekly challenges, clans, seasons, and all sorts of RPG mechanics that one expects in a game like this. The enemy character models are amazing. The plethora of cultists, rebels, and Chaos servants is huge. There are multiple Chaos chapters you will face, and the Chaos marines are ominous and tough. You'll fight rebel guardsmen and Ogryns, Hellbrutes and Dreadnoughts, even Leman Russ tanks as bosses. Honestly, the enemy roster will make any Warhammer nerd freak, and there is deep and informative lore. The fact that rogue traders are spoken of, not to mention the fact that the Inquisition is a part of Warhammer that is often underappreciated, really shows the love for the universe.

All in all, this is a good game, but is nowhere near a perfect game. However, many of the complaints for this game are about mechanics that are inherent with any dungeon crawler. My quick comparison is Helldivers meets Diablo with a WH40k flavor. This game does not break and new boundaries, but i is a much needed type of experience for WH fans.If you're a 40k fan and have been looking for an actual RPG to play in the universe, look no further.

Either way, it's a load of old **** Rubbish marketing practices.

Oh wait, there's more. Another 3Gb update on top of the initial 21Gb..! Wank.

Co-op play is not the best, as the 2nd player cannot import their character, but rather has to chose from 9 preset loadouts. Even then, the game hard crashes a few seconds after mission loads. Come on. Sort your **** out.

Finally managed to get a few co-op games in, and now starting to enjoy the game. (Therefore increased my score accordingly). Still a lot of issues, like game crashing before mission starts, or worse, at the end, resulting in lost loot..! There's a good game here, but the developers need to work towards reaching the game's potential.

This requires you to activate your account, and failing to do so will prevent you from logging back into the game. I actually tried to do this, even having the email sent additional times and clicking the link, getting a message that I was good to go, and then yet again, receiving the same error message upon logging in. Having the email resent gives me another error that I have already registered the account. This is the loop I have been stuck in and have honestly spent almost as much time trying to get into the game as I did playing it.

If the title didn’t give it away, this is based upon the popular table top board game Warhammer 40,000, which I honestly have very little experience with outside of a few past games from the franchise. If you’re like me, this probably isn’t the best jumping off point into the world story-wise, as I was lost before the initial cut scene was completed and the mid mission information provided only made things worse, as it is presented in an awkward manner. You’ll receive updates regularly from commanding officers, who apparently are only able to send emails, since there was no voice over present (I’m unsure if this was a glitch or how the game was intended, but it was uniform throughout the missions I was able to complete), yet they can hear your character’s verbal responses. Don’t get me wrong, I am not affected by adult illiteracy, I simply came here to kick butt and take names, not read long winded love letters.

The game is akin to a Diablo clone more than a twin stick shooter, but includes the option of taking cover at any time within the game world. This was a strange combination of past games in the franchise. I struggled to wrap my brain around this having played Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, which was a legit Gears of War clone, as well as Kill Team, which was a twin stick shooter that I simply loved during the days of the Xbox 360. The cover mechanic works as it should, but is unnecessary as I would’ve preferred the freedom to use the second stick to free aim as I mowed through enemy waves. The developers seemed to think that walking head first into the direction you wish to shoot was a better use of resources, but I found this change to be extremely hard to adapt to. On the plus side, the characters are fairly bullet spongey and have decent auto aim abilities, making the cover mechanic almost pointless. Even during more challenging encounters such as boss battles, I rarely found myself in danger of dying on the standard difficulty, even when ignoring the mechanic altogether. The missions themselves are fairly short, each running between five and fifteen minutes, and require somewhat lengthy load screens from the main menu, as the title skipped the open world train. These missions are uninspired but passable, featuring the standard tropes for the genre, such as killing X number of enemies, protecting specific NPCs, flipping a switch, or destroying something.

Much like any Diablo inspired game, there are a few different classes to choose from when selecting a character, but outside of the class and sub class, the customization options are limited to renaming the character. Regardless of the sub class you pick, you can interchange items seemingly without issues having selected a shotgun/sniper rifle proficient class from the get go. While I stuck with the vanilla build for a few levels, I quickly found that the automatic and laser rifles were more my speed. Following the typical formula of dungeon crawling games, you will also have a skill tree to throw your earned XP towards, unlocking class specific abilities. While there are plenty of options to be found, none of the ones I acquired felt overly original.

The visual presentation is a mixed bag, with highly detailed environments ripe for exploration and mediocre character models, so much so that I often felt they were ripped from a PS3 era game (at best) and incorporated into the much prettier backdrops. This doesn’t stand out much during actual gameplay due to the panned out view that makes the lack of detail the character models offer to be slightly less ugly, but the game looks atrocious in any of the cut scenes rendered using in game assets. While the actual models are passable, when compared to the small details that other games get right, this fails miserably. The biggest callout was my character’s ponytail (again, I didn’t pick the look, just the abilities). It looked like a broken compass pointing any which way it wanted opposed to locks of flowing hair, rivaling the hair physics from the original Tomb Raider.

If you want to take the plunge, I say you should wait for a sale and be sure you resolve the email registration issue early on to avoid losing progress.

You spend your time filling the boots of an Inquisitor trying to fight back against the forces of Chaos plaguing the sector. The concept is a fun one that the execution leaves something to be desired.

You can play as a crusader (warrior), a psyker (wizard), or an assassin (rogue). The game has a cover and suppression mechanic that adds something different to the mix but ultimately it just feels like a less fluid execution of Diablo 3.

People who aren't fans of the Warhammer 40,000 lore will probably have more fun just playing Diablo 3. People who are fans the Warhammer 40,000 lore might be annoyed by some elements conflicting with established lore; things in the game such as human Inquisitor fighting and killing multiple chaos Space Marines per level.

Another annoyance is that the game doesn't focus nearly as heavily as it should on story. A lot of what you'll end up doing is trudging through randomly-generated dungeons. But I personally enjoy crafted levels and tons of Storytelling elements.

You can tell that the game is a port from a PC game. Handling is a little clumsy and when you attack it focuses on an enemy. Especially annoying with melee attack considering you walk over to the enemy you're targeting, even if they're far away, before attacking as opposed to just swinging your chainsword as soon as the button is pressed.

One last complaint is that if you're playing alone you can't have a computer-controlled companion. You can play local co-op, but your friend can't save their progress. You can also play online with other players. Again, drawing the parallel to Diablo 3, the NPC's you could have following you around had a lot of backstory and some modest dialogue options.

It's probably worth a rent, especially if you're into Warhammer 40,000, but probably not worth buying unless they make some major improvements.

Couch co-op is a joke. You have to play through SEVEN missions solo before it's an option, and even then, you don't get to play full characters together. No, your buddy has to play as some garbage henchman "support" character with no progression and no options.

No other ARPG on the market does this poorly at co-op. Awful experience.

Despite what some have said, it does bear comparison to Diablo, at least mechanically. You use weapons by pressing the pad buttons (as opposed to the triggers), play through relatively short levels, kill enemies, collect gear, level up and repeat. There is the added tactical element of a cover system and a highly destructible environment which is cool, but honestly I don't use it that much, except on harder levels where it's absolutely necessary just to stay alive. It's different from Diablo in that the levels are either procedurally generated or so numerous and varied as to be as good as and the missions and objectives are generally pretty forgettable, but it's nice to have a reason to be tooling around and mashing grunts. The main story is both long and interesting, it doesn't force you to play the main missions so you can take it at your own pace without NPCs constantly hassling you to get on with the main story, which is great. In 40k terms they've got the atmosphere down to a tee - it's very grimdark and OTT without ever quite crossing the line into being silly, the enemies feel like a threat, particularly on harder missions/difficulty levels and the weapons and equipment of 40k are nicely, if somewhat liberally, implemented. From a lore perspective there is a bit of an over saturation of some enemy types - I've not been playing long and have killed nearly 300 Chaos Space Marines, which would represent a pretty devastating loss for the forces of Chaos, but they don't seem to be concerned!

Graphics are pretty good, the levels are nicely rendered and sound effects are great. The voice acting is a little hammy (can't help but notice that every man in the Imperium seems to have three balls judging by how deep their voices are) but it doesn't detract from the overall experience. Would definitely recommend if you're a fan of either 40k or Diablo.

An amazing game, a lot of classes with sub-classes, a lot of weapons and play style, a deep story with memorable characters, missions with many objectives, and options to customize every play-trough, and use of WH40K excellent, great recommendation, and developer bring new updates and content every month.

No offline mode. Requires an account that I can’t create. Servers down? Can’t play. Internet down? Can’t play. I got it for free from PS Plus, but even then I feel cheated. The fact that they want money for this F2P-style cancer is depressing.

I got the complete edition on sale. It is a bit of a mixed bag. The gameplay is addictive, I really spent a lot of time just with the Crusader, there are still 3 more characters to try. Kudos for the devs who are constantly pumping new contents. For some reason though there is still "something" missing, I can't point out exactly, identity maybe. For some reason though there is still "something" missing, I can't point out exactly, identity maybe. The levels look the same, the enemies look the same (except for those funny exploding Khorne). Maybe the models are not sufficiently detailed. I don't know, you have a mix of addictive, yet not fully immersive gameplay, that will occupy you for a long time. The story is here but not told well. Tons of nonsensical "cogitator" texts you'll have to read. Framerate issues still here, but no crashes. Still recommended on sale. Expand

Very boring, monotonous, monotonous game. There is no plot, I barely played to the end.

From start to finish, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr is an outstanding dungeon crawler that checks all the boxes I want checked and then goes on to polish up all the other details as well. It might not win over those who aren’t already fans of the genre, but players looking for the next great dungeon crawl can’t afford to miss this one.

Although it excels over others when it comes to story, Martyr is still not good enough in some aspects that are too important to its genre, they cannot be overlooked.

If Martyr was the Warhammer game you’ve been waiting for, it’s likely to disappoint. [Issue#154, p.80]
