    Tokyo Xanadu feels like a mixture of the Trails series mixed with Ys battle system. You can spend time with friends to raise your relationship with them, read books and answer questions for wisdom, complete difficult dungeons with high grades to raise bravery, and complete side quests to raise kindness. These kind of reminded me of Persona's gameplay a little and I really enjoyed it.Tokyo Xanadu feels like a mixture of the Trails series mixed with Ys battle system.     The only down sides are only one character can fight at a time so you have to constantly switch characters during battle to hit enemy weaknesses or use different attack types and they all share the same energy bar as well as control the same way. It feels like the game only needed one character but uses multiple characters instead. That isn't bad though it just felt unnecessary. I think the weapon type should also matter instead of just their element. The eclipse has different styles but they always stay the same so grinding means going through repetitive hallways and monsters that you have played before.    … Expand

    Insert cries of "this is a Persona clone!" I will entertain those accusations from those who have played more than just Persona 5. I feel like this is more of a nod to Persona than as a clone. This is the team that brought us Ys and Trails. And it plays like a modern action version of that, right down to a reported character, and the same menus.
    Anyways. The story    I loved this game.

    Anyways. The story follows an ordinary student who accidentally falls into another world that holds demons. There he meets a girl who has been fighting these demons. And so the story starts. Other characters join, and humans are kidnapped or drawn into the other world abyss.
    Pros-
    Decent music and average anime graphics. Comfortable combat featuring weapons and magic attacks, with three different super attacks. The story is immersive, and I was never bored. It features social events and optional tasks or missions to get to know your classmates and pick up some items. It also features mini games and an incredibly useful teleport menu system on the map. In school and need to be at the park? Teleport. I know what you're thinking here. Another element that was interesting was taken from Trails, and that was cooking recipes for power ups. The characters lacked that annoying one that you won't use to battle and skip in cutscenes; instead they were all generally likable.
    Cons - My only con was the fact that they went a little cliche with an element in the endings, and the fact that there are 3 endings. Think end, real end, and then after story end.
    And the skateboarding game.

    Overall, I put in over 100 hours and achieved a very frustrating platinum by beating it in Nightmare mode and Infinity mode. After it was over, I was sad that I had to move on, and at the same time, craving Persona 4.    … Expand

    I didn't like the game, a waste of time. The plot is very boring and not interesting, children's diologues, it makes no sense to read them, after a while you just skip them. Labyrinths are monotonous in nature, the differences are minimal. Fighting more or less, but there is a big minus, the labyrinths are narrow in themselves and when there are many opponents and you need to makeI didn't like the game, a waste of time.     Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ (shortening to TXE from now on) it's the upgraded version of Tokyo Xanadu for the vita and it's an action jrpg with a lot of emphasis on story, characters and collecting...and before someone might say "it's just like persona" I am going to stop you there and tell you "this is actually like Trails of Cold Steel", complete with the same UI, same ideas, same questing system,Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ (shortening to TXE from now on) it's the upgraded version of Tokyo Xanadu for the vita and it's an action jrpg with a lot of emphasis on story, characters and collecting...and before someone might say "it's just like persona" I am going to stop you there and tell you "this is actually like Trails of Cold Steel", complete with the same UI, same ideas, same questing system, same event, and bonding system, literally same everything. Except the combat that is.

    The story revolves around Kou which is your generic grumpy and unlikable MC who suddenly sees the generic tsundere love interest of the game getting into a portal to another world and from here the game will soon open up to the fact there are organizations aimed to clear these dungeons and that everything is all undercovered in the underground.
    While the obvious similarities to persona is there, I would at least say "it's similar to persona 3" which is my favorite persona of the bunch, especially with all the "secret organization vibe going" that I really enjoy.

    However, the main issue with the story it's the characters: they're the most generic and stereotypical anime characters you can find and it's a hard swallow for those who aren't into anime culture like me. For example, Kou looks like your generic uncaring guy with a potential harem surrounding him, Asuka is so tsundere (or kuudere?) it makes me yawn how much she hides her personality, and Sora is the ultra generic childhoodfriend-love interest-tomboy-love triangle rival it's so painful to watch. I didn't get all of the characters but it's really annoying the first time you meet them and while the characters do improve with time, it does have an anime vibe that might discourage normal players to get into it.

    To put it on perspective, TOCS cast is also very generic and clichè but they do show their best and their improvements early on, and the cast is bigger so you have a lot of options.
    In here it feels like I'm watching some sort of super sentai show with harem elements. It's really hard to watch at times.

    Overall, if you're heavy into anime, the cast won't bother you really that much and the story is interesting enough to keep you hooked, plus if you played TOCS you're pretty much already acknowledged of how the game works. Heck the game is so similar to TOCS even Towa is in thanks to the power of Mary Sue.

    But if the system and gimmicks work a lot like TOCS, the actual game itself is completely different and it's more similar to a Ys game: the combat is action-based and you're going to fight in long, semi-linear dungeons in an attempt to get the highest rank possible and getting S so to get the best results. The combat is pretty fast and it uses an elemental base system to fight against enemies and each character can use up to 2 elements (you start with 1) to fend them off and it's heavily encouraged in order to get S rank, which improves Kou 3 main stats (Courage, Wisdom, Virtue).

    You have different types of attacks you can upgrade the Grid system and each slot can be upgraded so you can put different Elements, including a Master Core. Sound familiar?
    Jokes aside, the system works but it does feel overcomplicated for the wrong reasons, however upgrading slots - which requires materials to grind - do give bonuses to your stats and it will force some extra grind to make yourself viable. If anything money is much easier to obtain.

    Overall the combat system does work...but man it's tough as nails!

    I'm not going to beat around the bush: TXE is pretty hard and I think it's because you have fewer enemies on screen than a regular Ys game, which means they compensate for the lack of enemies by making each enemy much more difficult to take down. I'm not kidding when I say that I actually died on the first bosses because of the damage output they make and how tough it is to dodge their attacks, however, the dodging system is a lot clunkier and it's much easier to get hit, despite having a "timing" gimmick where you can be invulnerable for a few seconds but after that, you can get hit very easily.

    Honestly, the problem with the combat's difficulty is that you usually fight alone, enemies have a lot of mechanics and moves to predict (especially in Calamity) and especially at the beginning you can easily lose more than half your entire hp bar, if not die completely, if you get hit with several attacks in a row. It's relentless but the combat system isn't as smooth or polished as ys 8, which makes it a lot harder to grasp and less satisfying to master.

    Bottom line, do I recommend? Yes but at the same time I'd recommend to get a copy of Ys8 and play that game first, which is a lot better in every aspect and you can find it everywhere for cheap (except switch which I highly discourage because of poor framerate. You've been warned)
    But if you played that game already and hoped for some action jrpg, this could be a good choice. Just don't expect Ys8!    … Expand

    Xanadu é uma franquia conhecida para quem segue como fã a desenvolvedora Nihon Falcom, empresa exímia quando o assunto é J-RPG. Quem já está acostumado com seus títulos, sabe muito bem que raramente há diálogos ou uma narrativa que prenda o jogador. No caso de Xanadu EX+ temos um começo de história conturbada na qual somos apresentados ao personagem Kou Tokisaka saindo de seu trabalho totalmente cansado e vendo a colegial Hiragi passando bem à sua frente. Nesse momento, há uma dupla espreitando a garota e acabam encurralando-a num beco. Ao perceber a possível intenção dos garotos, Kou segue os três e nota que algo está errado. Uma anomalia acontece e um portal aparece repentinamente na frente deles. Este portal os leva para um universo estranho e sombrio chamado Eclipse. Lá, há inúmeras criaturas sombrias das quais Hiragi estaria tentando proteger os garotos que estavam tentando assediá-la. Estes meninos estão desacordados justamente por não terem a capacidade de enxergar aquele mundo tanto quanto ela. Então Hiragi percebe que Kou naquele universo consegue ver nitidamente. Depois de uma breve batalha de Hiragi vs Monstros, todos regressam ao mundo visto como ‘normal’ e, então, sem saber o que aconteceu, Kou começa a gerar diversos questionamentos. É quando a coadjuvante decide pegar seu celular e soltar um feitiço que fará com que nosso personagem volte a sua vida normal e não se recorde de absolutamente nada. Kou retorna à sua vida de estudante e trabalhador, mas, após algumas horas, tudo volta a acontecer e então retornamos ao mundo onde Higari está e mais uma vez eles se encontram. O Eclipse acaba juntando dois personagens muito carismáticos em uma batalha funesta para descobrir a razão pela qual essa anomalia fica a todo momento acontecendo.

    O jogo dividido em capítulos, também permitirá que entre um e outro possamos realizar missões secundárias, melhorar nossos atributos sem estarmos no campo de batalha, tudo muito parecido com o sistema que há no jogo da Sega, o famoso Yakuza, em especial quando se trata de minijogos. É tudo muito similar, pois há o momento de entretenimento ao caminhar pela cidade, mas também o de perigo, quando encontramos algo em nosso caminho. Em boa parte dele serão as anomalias chamadas Eclipse como já mencionamos acima. Temos aproximadamente 50 horas de game num geral se o jogador tiver interesse em realizar praticamente tudo que o título dispõe, desde quests (sejam elas principais ou secundárias) até mesmo caminhar por aí conversando com todo tipo de gente nos mapas. Tokyo Xanadu eX+ é sem sombra de dúvidas uma versão melhorada da anterior e com diversos conteúdos novos. Isso inclui também uma certa melhoria no modo de relacionamento. Podemos nos relacionar com um determinado personagem no jogo, criar laços e depois descobrir que há um amigo em comum zanzando por outra parte do mapa. Não necessariamente o mapa em que se inicia o relacionamento, mas poderá, por exemplo, estar no colégio durante a aula e descobrir que a professora tem um grande amigo dono de um comércio próximo dali. Esse relacionamento é interessante e cria uma humanização dos personagens que facilmente demonstram ter poucas expressões corporais quando estão papeando. Assim, você controla o protagonista Kou e pode experimentar tanto partes de aventura em Morimiya City como dentro dos calabouços chamados de Spirit World.

    Apesar de prometer melhorias visuais, o game apenas deu um retoque na maquiagem quando o assunto é gráfico. Visualmente, o título é datado, lembrando jogos do início da era PS3. Se forçar mais um bocado, teremos a sensação de que o Dreamcast já teve RPGs parecidos. Certo de que não é somente isso que influenciará se um jogo é bom ou não, no entanto, há coisas que realmente conseguem denegrir a imagem. Enquanto estávamos no início de gameplay, conforme podem ver no vídeo mais acima, chegamos na escola de Kou e fomos apresentados aos seus amigos. Até aí, tudo bem, entretanto, em um determinado momento, apareceu uma cerejeira ao lado dos colegiais e que suas folhas mais pareciam de papel que não havia sequer algo que as fizessem se mexer. Olha, para se ter uma noção, é algo que, sinceramente, Shenmue 2 já teve um melhor esmero visual do que em Tokyo Xanadu EX+    … Expand

Falcom siempre hace muy buenos JRPG con excelentes tramas (siempre conservando la estética anime claramente) y Tokyo Xanadu no se queda afuera, sistema de batalla muy similar a Ys Series muy fluido a diferencia de otros JRPG que son mas duros( god eater series). Y con variedad de cosas para hacer Y MUCHADecidí escribir esto en español ya que en ingles se me complica un poco. Falcom siempre hace muy buenos JRPG con excelentes tramas (siempre conservando la estética anime claramente) y Tokyo Xanadu no se queda afuera, sistema de batalla muy similar a Ys Series muy fluido a diferencia de otros JRPG que son mas duros( god eater series).     While it sometimes feels like a rip-off of the Persona series, it still is a great game.
    Characters are likeable and the story is not bad. In my opinion the strong point it the battle system witch is really fun and i hope to see a polished Sequel someday.

    I just love it simply because of the combat system.. it's simple but unlike trails of cold steel, its not boring. I always wanted a simple game with Good plot and fight mechanics and finally got it. Tho it has alot of.. "lazy visuals" I guess? I don't know how to describe it but in graphical perspective I feel like its incomplete? That is my opinion though.

    It seems one of the two bad reviews is someone who is illiterate so if your illiterate I recommond skiping the text and just do the fun combat but if you love readint and nice hack and lash like combat this is your game if you don't like reading you may still like it

The story bears great similiarity to Persona for sure, but so do 100s of other anime stories related to schools in Japan and so on. The story is quite well written and I especially liked that most of the characters are quite well written and have a progression arc. For many people the game mightTokyo Xanadu EX+ is an action RPG with an almost visual novel like backstory in a Tokyo school. The story bears great similiarity to Persona for sure, but so do 100s of other anime stories related to schools in Japan and so on. The story is quite well written and I especially liked that most of the characters are quite well written and have a progression arc. For many people the game might be too story heavy but I find the balance between fighting and story actually quite perfect. The battle system is quite complex and makes use of most buttons on the joypad including directional pad arrows, as I am not very good in ARPGs in general I often forgot to use half the special moves or accidentally used one when trying to switch characters or open menu, however, the normal difficulty is easy enough to enjoy the game anyways. Only the final boss fight required extra googling of instructions. Music is ok, and sounds too., and so is graphic, nothing super spectacular but works.… Expand

    Fans of the Legends of heroes series will love this. Falcom loooked to differ itself and show they can make other games, and while they can, the influence of the LoH games are here. It is smooth and plays well, but it suffers from a long start time, and it takes a while to really get going. If you have the fortitude to deal with the grinding beginning the intermediate and ending will beFans of the Legends of heroes series will love this.     I was recommended TX as I was reading up on Cold Steel, a JRPG series by the same creators. What I didn't realise was just how similar TX would be to this and a lot of other RPGs, including Persona. Having said that, the game doesn't seem any worse off for it.

What I didn't realise was just how similar TX would be to this and a lot of other RPGs, including Persona. Having said that, the game doesn't seem any worse off for it.

    The graphics of TX are pretty standard Anime style, familiar to anyone who has played Falcom's games before. They aren't going to push the PS4 very hard, but you do get some nice varieties in the dungeons as magic and backgrounds make up for the more mundane aspects of the high school setting. This was originally designed with the PS Vita in mind, and stands alongside its peers such as Tales of Berseria.

    The gameplay of TX is also comparable to Cold Steel, but TX takes a real-time approach more like a hack n slash. One pleasant surprise is that the game does not fall into repetition as much as it could. Dungeons are just few and far enough between, characters are plentiful, and combat mechanics offer enough layers and special moves to the combat to keep it fresh. Having said that, due to the length of the game I resorted to easier difficulties, which also staved off repetition.

    The backbone of TX is alternating between high school life and the dungeons, very similar to Persona 5. This means that things can get fairly repetitive from the sheer fact that all dungeons follow a linear pattern of minor enemies leading up to a boss at the end. Still, the game breaks this up well with cutscenes to help.

    There are quite a few game mechanics to dig your teeth into, from equipment to cooking and even a social media app where you receive quests. Again the former of this seems to borrow from Cold Steel a lot, so be wary of burning yourself out if you play too many Falcom games in quick succession. On the other hand, the familiarity helps get into the game faster.

    The story is where TX stands out most and excels best. I surprised myself by the end of the game in that I had grown fond of all of the characters and wanted to see how things played out for them. The main protagonist (Kou) was a bit too much like Rean Schwarzer from Cold Steel for my liking, but the gradual introduction of characters helped build them into people I could connect with.

    However, I did take exception to one major concept in the game. I did not realise the significance of the name of the game, in that Tokyo Xanadu was the original release, with 'eX+' later adding extra content an an afterstory. I really have mixed feelings on the afterstory. By the time the original game ended things felt pretty closed, but the afterstory brought back a lot of repetition as it seemed kind of a desperate way to achieve a more happy ending.

    Despite my misgivings above, TX is another astounding JRPG that will survive in my memory for a long time. I look back on it positively. It could have done with some truncating, but being alongside the characters for this journey was very rewarding and enjoyable.    … Expand

In keiner Disziplin erreicht es die Qualität eines Persona 5, was deutlich die Referenz dieses Spiels zu sein scheint, dennoch passt bei den spaßigen Kämpfen, den vielen Dungeons, den immer wieder neune CharakterenSchön gemachtes Japan RPG im Persona Stil, das mit charmanten Charakteren, guten Dialogen, netten Dungeons und an die Ys Serie angelehnten Echtzeit Kämpfen zu überzeugen weiß.     Pretty decent game. Despite the lack of uniqueness and depth, the gameplay is fun, solid and some characters were fairly well-developed.

    I've seen people comparing Tokyo Xanadu with Persona but they're not that alike. This game will definitiely not going to touch thorny themes, it's a light experience overall.

    Saw this game on sale and picked it up on whim. I had no idea what it was or what it was about. But something about the name and look through the pictures caught my eye. Im glad i bought it. This is easily my favorite game I've played this year(2021)! You owe it too yourself to play this game. The game is fast and challenging, but satisfying as hell once you learn the enemy attacks and canSaw this game on sale and picked it up on whim. I had no idea what it was or what it was about. But something about the name and look through the pictures caught my eye. Im glad i bought it. This is easily my favorite game I've played this year(2021)! You owe it too yourself to play this game. The game is fast and challenging, but satisfying as hell once you learn the enemy attacks and can make it through dungeons without taking damage. The characters are all  likeable and the story is interesting and captivating the whole way through! 10/10 in my opinion. I'll definitely be buying a physical copy, so i can support the devs as close to full price as i can. They deserve every penny… Expand

    If an editor had taken a serious red pen and streamlined the narrative, Tokyo Xanadu EX+ would be fantastic. As it is, this is a game with stellar JRPG action and a story that will try the patience of all but the most dedicated players.

    Those who couldn't get enough of Tokyo Xanadu's combat will no doubt be pleased with the extra content here, especially a robust post-game that takes place during Halloween. Everyone else, however, is better off passing this one up. eX+'s additions are so flimsy and superfluous as to actively detract from the original game, dragging out an already thin premise to another 25 hours.

    For those planning to pick up one of the versions of Tokyo Xanadu, eX+ would be the recommended one for the extra event scenes and character interactions that come with it. Its improvements — including an assortment of minor quality of life upgrades — mean that it is the better release, but those who prefer to play on handheld shouldn't feel at all shortchanged by the original; the extras are more a bonus than anything and players are getting a substantial and greatly absorbing experience either way. Nihon Falcom's charm permeates throughout and its incredibly easy to get attached to Morimiya City and its residents.
