After 10 hours into The Surge I am truly loving this game. I am a big fan of decent sci-fi, and also anything SoulsBorne, and this is a great entry to the 'souls' ? genre. There will probably be a lot of mixed views about the location because it is fairly similar throughout so far, but that does not matter once you get going and exploring because you'll discover the levels are meticulously designed flawlessly to ensure that there's something cool around every corner wherever you go, whether that's loot, a new bad guy to fight (and also loot their weaponry if you target the right limbs to hack away at), or a really helpful shortcut leading you back to base. Graphics are great, it's all very district 9 / Neil Blomkamp in design and the lighting is really cool, especially electricity and laser animations. The combat is absolutely superb, really really responsive and tight, and every fight, despite being hard, feels fair due to the enemies adopting move sets that you can learn and then take them down accordingly. Music and sound is good too, pretty subtle most of the time but when the heat is on- the good electronic music gets going too. The noises the enemies make are pretty unnerving I must say, they sound utterly demented and hellish which cranks up the tension before a fight.

All in all a very good game, fans of SoulsBorne will find the combat pure gold. It's not going to be for everyone, because as I said, the location is pretty similar throughout, and that might annoy some people, but not me, and that's down to the clever level design (and just because I straight up think the game design is cool as f*ck).

I thought it was great till then. As someone who earned platinum trophies in all the souls games, Bloodborne, Nioh and absolutely love all of them while somewhat liking Lords of the Fallen (Slow as molasses combat.) I've found this to be the most annoying of the genre. Constantly getting 1 or 2 shot killed, reguardless of armor. Bad hit box detection. The dodging, in a lot of cases, is pointless while blocking can't be done while moving. While I finished 2 play throughs of Lords of the Fallen yet lost interest in it, at least I finished it. I have a feeling that the combat mechanics are so annoying that I won't even finish this. A big disappointment. The concept of cutting off parts for armor and upgrades is brilliant but the (here's that word again) annoyingly frustrating combat just kills it. Souls games are fantastic games that happen to be hard. High risk, high reward. This just seems like cheap shots with not much reward. I regret my purchase. *edit After playing much more of the game, my issues and complaints have exponentially risen. Ive been playing games since the 80's and this is one of the most infuriating and annoying games I've ever played. Not only have I lowered my score, I'd like to give people who may be considering purchasing this game some insight into the trophy stats from people who have the game installed. 18% of people that have the game installed have upgraded their rig. (This is after the second boss) Congrats to Deck 13. The game is so good that 4.5% of people who bought it have beat the 5th boss. It looks like people are where I am...done. I uninstalled it. Massive waste of time and money. Expand

The reason I start with the above (& I may well have missed certain aspects of the genre but those 4 basically cover it) is that I keep seeing comments both on here and other gaming sites, where clearly triggered people state (when referencing Nioh, The Surge or any of the other games that make up this burgeoning sub-genre) 'Its nothing like Dark Souls!'.

Well if, like me... you are a fan of the 'Souls-like' (I think this name has now officially overtaken 'Soulsborne' as the go to term to describe it) The Surge is a great little variant on the classic that is Dark Souls (well Demon's Souls if we are being totally accurate). Having been a huge fan of this type of game since Demon's Souls, I was always a bit hesitant to try any of the Souls-likes not made by From Software... so I just played through Demon's, the Dark Souls trilogy and Bloodborne over and over again in a continuous cycle. I guess that I just assumed no one other than Miyazaki and his crew could produce a 'fix' that would satisfy my craving. I had read the reviews of D13's previous effort LotF and the negativity just reinforced my assumption.

It took Nioh to convince me that my preconceived notion that ONLY From could hit my sweet-spot with this game type was incorrect... and since then both LotF and now The Surge have further enforced my initial error in judgement.

To give you some context as things currently stand I would personally give Bloodborne a 10, Dark Souls 3 a 9.5, Demon's Souls & Dark Souls a 9.25, Dark Souls 2 SotfS & Nioh a 9 and Lords of the Fallen an 8. For me the Surge is definitely better than LotF but I can Metacritic only allows us to score whole numbers and I therefore score it an 9 (I would actually give it an 8.75).

The graphics and aesthetic are more than decent, very Blomkamp as other's have pointed out.

The sound effects are great, adding real impact to the melee action, while that b****y song they insist on playing in the med-bay is infuriating.

The combat is great! FAR better than the combat in LotF. It is also far more Dark Souls in its combat than Nioh, but with its own intricacies. So far in the genre I would be unable to split Bloodborne and Nioh as having the best combat gameplay (for differing reasons but they are both just so satisfying). The Surge's combat is also very good though, with the addition of choosing a specific body part to target and then the additional choices of 'what' to do with the accumulated 'power'. You can either remove the targeted body-part (& receive schematics for crafting to boot) or depending on the implants your build is using, you can use the 'power' accumulated to heal (rather than using one of your actual heals), to boost stamina or to charge one of your drone's abilities. All of which can be swapped between within the heat of the action, it definitely adds to the thought processes.

Difficulty is a decent balance. The average enemy you face will seem a tougher prospect than the average enemy opposing you in the other games of the genre but the game is shorter, so shouldn't take any player as long to complete. There is also only 5 bosses which is probably the games biggest negative, though there are some mini-bosses dotted around the environments.

Level design is great too. The Surge's level's are the closest in quality to From Software's ingenious designs. It is this one aspect that I found Nioh struggled with. The Surge has one Med-bay (bonfire-proxy) pre area, with a multitude of unlock-able shortcuts around the level that help your later area runs as you unlock them.

Yes the game is shorter than any of From Software's games, and shorter than Nioh too but it will challenge you due to the difficulty in each enemy encounter. There is also enough there in the trophy list to keep you playing into the NG+ and maybe further.

All in all, really happy with the purchase, far better than I thought it was going to be having read a lot of the opinions out there. A little-known gem of a game, looking forward to playing the DLC next and then taking on The Surge 2 in 2019.

The combat is great with the whole limb targeting system being an excellent (and useful, since it gets you items) addition. And much like Bloodborne and the Souls games the environment is sprawling and interconnected with lots of shortcuts that satisyingly open up as you progress. Its also satisfying to progressively add more armor to your character to turn him into a bulky, rusted metal badass.

One of my main hesitations leading up to the release was that the level and enemy design seemed a bit bland and generic in preview videos, but as i'm playing it, honestly, it kinda just works. Theres a strong Tetsuo-esque body horror vibe to the whole thing and the environment, although not exactly the prettiest or most richly detailed, does have an unsettling atmosphere to it.

Basically, its not GOTY material by any means, but if you're into the souls formula then this is definitely a worthwhile buy. I'm giving it a 7, but its a high 7 bordering on 8.

Was your favorite Souls boss Dragon God or Adjudicator? Cuz apparently those are the only ones that Deck 13 liked! The bosses and most non-humanoid creatures in general have horrible, annoying mechanics attached to them (usually invincibility-related) along with spammy, zero recovery movesets that ensure there is only ONE WAY to fight - dash in, dash out. It makes the long, flowing combos they have designed for each weapon completely useless.

That ducking/jumping mechanic? Worthless. Different weapon types? Doesn't matter, they all play the same when you have such short windows to attack. This isn't even getting into their love of piling on 2-3 enemies at a time when the game gives the player ZERO tools to deal with groups. It's just terrible design. Deck 13 is the kid that your D&D group never lets be DM, so you give them a chance because you feel bad, only for them to turn around and make the game so miserable and unfair for everyone else playing that you never let them try again.

And they obviously wanted to ape Bloodborne with the high damage and dashes, but completely missed the fact that Bloodborne gives you massive amounts of healing, ranged parries and I-FRAMES DURING DODGE to compensate for the disgustingly OP enemies. What were they thinking?!

I just honestly don't believe they ever playtested The Surge. Beyond the fact that it becomes an unbearable, horrible slog after the second level, there are tons of bugs (including game-breaking ones), I have had multiple crashes on PS4, and PC users have discovered that wonky debug quicksave and reload were still mapped to Fn keys in the shipped game! DECK 13, GET IT TOGETHER!!

TL;DR - I wish The Surge's combat was in a better game - or at least one that actually respected the player. Until it is patched to alleviate the difficulty somehow, just stay away. I regret buying it and you probably will, too. It will likely end up free on PS+ in a year or so anyways like many Focus Home titles.

I've put about 50 or so hours into this game so far and have loved it. The combat is nice and the atmosphere is very cool. This is like a soul's game but it is not a soul's game, so don't expect dark soul's in space. At the same time, they do what they do very well. The combat is much tighter then was in Lords of the Fallen, I highly recommend this title.

It's actually NOT a Demon-Souls like game at all, it's a slasher with poor mechanics. Authors miss main part of DS -- you could always overpower enemy by grining if enemis are to hard. So there is always a solution even if you skill are low. But this game set limits by power and make enemies always bit to hard to be enjoyable.

Each have their own advantages and disadvantages of course, I chose to play as a brute.
I was surprised how much I initially enjoyed this game…
This game is definitely challenging but not quite at the level of the souls game or nioh…
The maps are fairly self-contained and compact here…
This makes it very easy to memorize enemy locations when it comes to the grinding and crafting portion of the game
the combat with regular enemies is pretty decent and feels fair.. at least when its one on one…
you can lock onto them and target specific body parts to attempt to saw off certain gear…
Sometimes you’ll get new gear like weapons…
but mostly you’ll just get parts along with other scraps to craft armor from schematics you find in the world…
there’s really no true loot system here…
The scraps are essentially your souls..
And like in the soul’s game if you die you have to go recollect them...
But you are able to bank them in your medbay which is where you go to heal, level up, install new implants for added perks like consumable health, craft new weapons and armor, upgrade them, and refill your consumables…
Leveling up just requires scraps while crafting and upgrading requires scraps as well as random items you have to pick off of enemies based on luck of course…
and also like the souls games, going to this room respawns every enemy you’ve killed which is a gift and a curse..
A gift because you can grind...
worlds are small and bosses are brutal…
youre definitely going to grind for levels and upgrades...
a curse because once you do finally make it to a boss theyre all in your way trying do some damage to you before you even get there…
But before we get to the bosses..
There is definitely some cheapness going on outside of them…
Things don’t really start getting cheap until the 2nd section of the game… here you get a drone friend which is nice… though to use them you have to fill up your energy bar a bit, but by time that happens you’ve usually already killed the enemy.. So it’s pretty useless…
but this is where enemies start using ranged gun type weapons that you can’t do anything about but take the damage and push forward...
And there are no health pickups here... youre relient on your implants to replenish your health except for the extremely rare refill stations... and by rare I mean like 1 in a map…
But still it was fun to push forward, grind, find alternate paths, unlock shortcuts like demons souls so when you do die you can skip giant sections of the map to get right back to where you died
These cheap moments were annoying and unfair... but I still didn’t mind them.. At least not as much as the boss battles…
The bosses here aren’t hard by themselves...
Theyre pretty simple and easy to figure out...
the difficulty comes in the games design both level and combat…
For starters.. Enemy attacks go right through solid objects... there is no hiding behind beams…
That aside, This combat system was not designed for the boss battles... at least not with both classes in mind…
the 2nd boss in the game is where I stopped…
And I did so not because it was a tough boss…
I knew its patterns, I knew how to defeat it...
the problem was, as a brute... maybe this is just a brute problem…
But as a brute the problem was the timing of this bosses attacks…
    Enemeis will telegraph their attacks..
Give you some time to get out of the way
But you’re locked into animations here...
You’re able to dodge in combat, but only when you’re not attacking…
And this boss demands quick hits and dodging...
And this just isn’t possible to do efficiently as a brute…
don’t get me wrong, I’d definitely get lucky and have a flawless first stage of this battle… but the 2nd stage when you have to attack it from underneath is when things really start to get unfair because your character doesn’t get out of animation fast enough for you to have time to dodge the near insta kill slam this enemies does when you’re underneath..
    Cause theres bad hit detection
Both from enemies as id randomly lose damage during fights without being touched, and from you as your attacks will do nothing at times especially to bosses…
Based off of what I saw though, The Surge is still a good game…
its addictive in the way the souls games are… But at moments it falls into the category of unfair more than it does challenging and that sours the addictive and great moments that are here too I give The Surge a 7/10

I made it far into this game, through tough boss battles, winding labyrinths, and great environments you can tell were made with care. Unfortunately, when you do find your way to boss battles, or any tough enemy for that matter, you are met with a clunky shell of a souls-like that can only be described as an embarrassment to the developers who made the combat. The combat mechanics, AI, and hitboxes hurt this otherwise great game with many options given to the player to play their way. Playing your way will stop as soon as you time a perfect dodge only to have a boss's weapon follow you like a bullet in the movie "wanted" in a shining example of a lack of "intelligence" in the coding for their AI. Fun will stop as soon as you happen upon 3 enemies in a room only to find they wont let you get up after getting hit *once*, resulting in you losing all of your health and your metal scrap "souls", as you daydream about the souls-likes that could handle a similar situation so much better. All of this wrapped in a story that I can tell the ending of from a mile away, since the story is a rehashed narrative we've all seen in games. One of unwitting misdirection and ultimate betrayal, not unlike the feeling of spending money on this game after seeing a beautiful shell, only to find an empty husk of frustration. (I'm guessing my predictions on the story are correct as seeing the very end is not something I plan on doing, even though I feel I'm near the end, unlike better games such as Nioh, which although flawed in its own ways, is beatable without getting nearly as many problems as this game, and leaves you wanting more.) In comparison to those games The Surge is far more welcoming.
While it might be true that the story in this game isn't the most grandiose there is nothing wrong about the dystopian future where men and machine meld. Quite intriguing indeed.

The Animations are top-notch but there are minor bug outs from time to time - nothing game breaking or enjoyment hindering though.

The Environment isn't the most diverse and astonishing in the genre that's true but it's not the point of the game to inspire awe with some grand views. From maze like factory halls to claustrophobic dark corridors where each corner might be hiding an enemy - it fit's the concept and "lore".
All the while the Audio effects of the enemies and the sound track will haunt you.

You will get tense action and will become invested in the Chip & Crafting systems.

What The Surge does it does so very well but it doesn't invent the wheel anew.

This game tries to copy the Dark Souls/Bloodborne style but fails miserably. The combat is extremely unbalanced, as you deal with one enemy quite easily then face another of the same type ang get one hit killed. Move to the next area where you expect the enemies to be a little harder, and they are easier ! The "story" is borrowed heavily from other games and also lacks any clarity. To think that I have to rate this game 5/10, which is even lower than the rate I giving to Lord of Fallen (6/10), Deck13, what have you done ?. 20 hours in the game to the final boss, I got mix feeling among satisfaction, frustration and tiredness, not sure which is more than others. While in this genre we have great games like DarkSouls 3, Bloodborne and Nioh, I can't help but to rate The Surge low. Let see why

    Pro :
    - Stunning visual effect, great graphic. it is best in this genre.
    - Intuitive body-parted cutting system.
    - Satisfied combat. Awesome execution animation.

    Cons
    - Level designs are too complicated. Many times I was frustrated because I got lost and died. I have to read walkthrough to know where I have to go next.
    - Too much fighting in the tight area. Actually, it is like 90% of the game will forced you to fight in tight space, if not hazard environment.
    - Short of Boss fights, only 5 for main game. The others game in this genre have around 15+. Moreover, Bosses in this game are not creatively designed. None are memorable.
    - Repetitive gameplay. You gonna do the same and the same. Dodge, Attack, Dodge, Attack ... No matter enemies. Blocking is not reliable, drain too much stamina. No parry system. Jump up or duck are useless ( I am surprised they added that though) . Only Dodge works, only way.
    - Story is empty. Nothing here. Worst game story ever. I still enjoyed the story in Lords of Fallen, but this game, meh. Main character keep asking what going on here to every NPC, and get NOTHING, why bother.
    - BGM is bad. espectially in the save hub, we have to listen to this crappy song everytime. At least they should have more songs and allow us to change .
    - No Multiplayer

In sum, The Surge is still lack of many aspects to become a good game. Sadly, it has potential. Core power system is also creative one but in the end people will use mostly +hp and hp max. It should have been executed better. Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Nioh are obviously better game by sheer margin. I recommend people to buy The Surge after you already play those games first and urge for more soullike. However, buy it on hard sale only, or not bother at all.

I have been playing The Surge for about 8 hours and so far it is faily fun. To be sure it is not as polished as the Dark Souls line of games, and the lack of character customization is a shame, but the combat is quick and brutal, the enemies are dangerous, and for the most part, the limb target mechanics are fun. The graphics are very passable, nothing super over awe-inspiring, but they do well and nothing looks muddy or washed out.

While not a perfect game, the souls lover and sci-fi lover in me collide to make this game quite enjoyable.

If you do NOT like souls style games, you will find this game even more unforgiving and full of death than dark souls in many places, so you probably want to stay away.
As for me, this game is right up my alley

New game from Deck13. Great gameplay. Great graphic. Crafting crafting crafting - i love it. Game looks like movie Elisium with Matt Damon. Finish moves are very smooth and bloody. Don't compare to the Dark Souls or Bloodborne - two diferent games. This is sci-fi tactical slasher :) with crafting mode. Go and spend your money - this is good game with lot of fun :)

Terrible game, does nothing new, full of bugs and glitches, only 5 boring and easy bosses, the environment is always the same, no creativity, 90% of the game mechanics are copied from Souls, shameless thieves. Don't waste your time on this garbage game.

Deck13 has stepped up to take a lash at Souls’ patented sadism. Some swings are short of the target, but the bulk have landed where they should. [July 2017, p80]

When it came to rating the game, I was torn between 7+ and 8. There are some technical issues here, the bosses are disappointingly bland and both enemies and environments could use some more variety. I made my final decision when I played the wonderful song from the game and started to look through the screenshots I captured. I instantly remembered how much fun I had with The Surge’s great combat system and felt the need to start New Game+. And I don’t even consider Dark Souls the best thing since medieval torture devices. [07/2017, p.54]

Lacks the finesse and charisma of its inspiration, and the exhilaration of nippier titles such as Bloodborne. A decent action RPG that finds itself in with a tough crowd. [July 2016, p.83]
