Let's start, the graphics are amazing, the gameplay is a huge step up (especially for melee and stealth), and the story is fantastic. A lot of people whining about the story are either upset about the LGBTQ+ aspects or they read spoilers with no context and were left enraged before playing the game. The Last of Us 2 is not the sequel I expected, but it is one that is true to its world and characters. The first game shows a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to get his job done, contrary to what Polygon thinks, the game is not about selfless actions or anything remotely about altruism. Joel has a mission, he became attached, and then he literally doomed the entire **** population because he didn't want to lose a daughter figure again. It is understandable, but also, if you came out not thinking Joel is a selfish man (albeit relatable) person, you didn't absorb the story properly and this game likely isn't for you as you entirely missed the point of the first one. Which you can see if you read Polygon's review, which honestly is an embarrassing review because the reviewer just blasted out that she played a game and didn't understand it even remotely. I think the hardest part of this game (for some) is that it really asks you to be a decent human who is capable of complex emotions and hopes that you can place yourself in the shoes of others while things are unfolding. It essentially asks that you go in with one motive and understand why you would possibly change that as events unfold and apparently that is asking too much for some 40,000+ losers review bombing the game. If you enjoyed the first game, play this with an open mind and don't become so attached to your own expectations that you get upset when the creators don't adhere to your every specification. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a masterpiece. The gameplay is great with new features that still fit the original game. The music perfectly fits every scene adding more emotion and showing whats happening in the scene without having to even look at it. The characters are memorable and get attached to easily with every word feeling right coming from their mouth. The deaths of characters are quick but understandable. seeing as no person in this game is some superhuman being and 1 bullet is all it takes. Seeing Jesse and Joel go out the way they did makes total sense. This game is not riddled with bugs and glitches and the gameplay mechanics feel amazing. if there is anything to complain about its how Ellie left Dina and JJ. I understand why as she is stuck with the memory of Joel dying the way he did.But in my mind i just cannot see Ellie leaving them like that. With the cliffhanger it makes me really shocked and wonder as to what happened to characters like Dina, JJ, Tommy, Maria, the whole town of Jackson, and most importantly where Ellie goes next. I also have questions like who was the guy in command of the crazy people at the end of the game he reminded me of Bill but i dont know how it would be Bill knowing he wanted to work alone. I also really hope there will be a multiplayer this game would be perfect with the old factions mode the gameplay is great. Expand

What are the odds of having 2 lesbians and 2 transgenders in the span of 8 characters in real life? why should games be filled with **** Please LGBTQ+ community can you just stay away from gaming you've already ruined the movie industry, isn't this enough for you?

The story is irrational and the character's development is trash. ellie turned into a murderer and killed everyone except the one she was supposed to kill; Joel was just humiliatingly killed **** you G.R.R.Martin for making this trend seem smart and edgy); Lev killed his mom and the game want to make that look justified because you know she didn't understand equality; un-meaningful ending and my god I can go for days non stop it's just **** I'm just gonna refund just because they need to know they ****ed up and so that they don't do this again and ruin gaming anymore

So. The Last of Us Part 2. I frankly do not know where to begin. As many of my fellow reviewers, we have waited a total of seven years for this release. With high hopes, we set money aside and anticipated a masterpiece .. and we got one, but not in the way we expected.

The first half of TLOU2 (if you know, you know) was absolutely incredible. I loved EVERY second, every interaction, everything. From the spine chilling gurgle emanating from clickers that somehow sounds even more terrifying, to the incredible acting presented by Ashley and Shannon. From the glorious realm of Jackson and Seattle, and the simple track of snow later countered by the ghostly sighting of an abandoned city retaken, it was a masterpiece. Truly. The chemistry and bittersweet moments had me lulled into a sense of security that was later cracked into pieces, as to be expected. The first part deserves positive reviews. The same cannot be said for the latter.

I can see exactly what ND was trying to convey, the message they so horribly tried to send. However everything leading up to that message did not make it satisfactory. I did not care for the second half in the least, and even after letting it sink in, I did not end up changing my feelings or mind on the interactions at hand. Again, I see what they were doing, and I can see how they thought it would work, but the narrative was insanely weak. The half-a$$ed parallels and the "two sides of the same coin" (literally) sequence was just not where it should have been.

I love TLOU and TLOU2, and I will continue to support ND and if they do have the balls to make a third installment, I hope to every god and deity that they do it right.

But the story, the forcing of players to take on the role of Abby in order to try to force them to sympathize/empathize/relate to her and her decision making process is absurd.
Joel is done a horrible injustice in the game. Was there a way for them to kill off his character if they "had to" and not make the game suffer in the process? Of course there was.
Instead, Neil Druckmann (and almost assuredly Anna Sarkeesian) decided to spit in the face of all the true fans of the previous game and send players down a rabbit hole of bad story telling, with shockingly daft characters who make horrendous decisions that are contradictory at every turn and ruin what COULD have been the "Masterpiece" that the "professional reviewers" claim this game to be.
I have been playing games probably longer than many of the professionals have been alive for. I remember the first time I played Pong. I beat Adventure when it first came out. I had Colecovision, the Atari 2600 and still have my old Famicom NES system somewhere in storage (though it is long since dead). I am a gamer and I know that a good story with relatable and likable characters who make informed decisions and have sensible through lines are the most important thing to my gaming experience today. TLOU2 did not have any of that. Good for Sony and Naughty Dog for making piles of money, as that is (at the end of the day) what is most important to their bottom lines, but when PLAYERS say that this game will go down in history on the same level as The Last Jedi and season 8 of GOT, they are not being hyperbolic or evil...just truthful about how bad this game is, and how much more we (as PLAYERS) expected after 7 long years of waiting.

TLoU2 is such a good story! and reminder that something so insanely impact can happen at any moment, and it's up to you how you deal with that.

to the mechanics, the game it's self is quite challenging, game does a great job of starving you but giving you just enough to succeed. lots to collect, lots to explore, tons of upgrades to both character and equipment, expanded upon the first game in pretty much every way. melee combat dodge mechanic is quick and responsive, and often feels like an out right grudge match, in a good way!

would have given 10 or of 10 if not for one gripe. they give you a lot of land to explore and navigate the problem is , YOU HAVE TO NAVIGATE IT. some of the most challenging and often frustrating parts of the game is getting where you want to go, with city streets being just chaotic, labyrinths of elevation, paths blocked , and destruction everywhere you turn, it's really hard to find your path. AND it doesn't let you be too creative about how you get from place to place. as there are a lot of invisible walls in places you would think you should be able to get through. and with just a big landscape, and no map. I often felt I didn't know where the hell I was going, and had to do a lot of backtracking to get there.

overall this game was horribly depressing, sometimes tender, heavily brutal, incredibly complex, dangerously simple. and everything in between. left me feeling hope and no hope all at the same time. just fantastic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a slap in the face to everyone that loved the first game. Do not buy this and save your money. The truth and context of this game is much worse than the leaks. Before I get into one of the worst stories ever. The gameplay is very average in today's modern gaming generation. There are minor improvements from the first game and enemy AI is dumb as ever. There are more cut scenes and walking than actual gameplay. SPOILER ALERT..... they destroyed all of your favorite characters. They dumb down Joel's character on purpose to make him weak and stupid. In the first game he was very smart and had a ton of experience. He didn't even trust a guy that was sick on the road. He chose to run him over. Later we find out that stranger on the road was not sick and it was all a set up. They do everything to make you dislike Joel and continue to spit on him. They have a trans female/male shoot him in the leg and torture him with a golf club right in the first 2 hours of the game. They spit on him literally. They made Ellie unlikable and a selfish human being. She kills everyone and continued to blame Joel for saving her life. She cared so much in saving humanity because she has the immunity but instead she became a lesbian and chose not to reproduce. Let that sink in. She even let's Abby the one that tortured and murdered Joel in front of her get away with it. Abby also bit off two of Ellie's fingers. Her letting Abby go is basically saying Joel deserved dying. A loveable character who is the main character of the game. There was no justice for Joel. This game robbed everything from you just for shock value. The current narrative of destroying the male character to make the female character rise is very weak story telling. It is disrespectful to both genders. Females even hate it. Worst of all the pacing of the story is horrible. You literally play as Abby the character we hate for half the game. They tried so hard to make us like her but none of it worked. This game is a waste of time and money and should have never been created as a sequel. The critics are liars and they don't care about what the fans want. Last night I just wrapped up The Last of Us 2 after my roughly 25 hour run. This game is difficult to stomach sometimes. It's really distressingly sad, it's unforgiving, and it forces you to think about things that you don't want to think about. But that's what makes it special.

When I saw the trailers for the game, I imagined a simple and sweet revenge story. Ellie and Joel going across the county to kill someone who had killed someone they loved. That isn't what this game is, and it's a better game for not just being that. My simple fan-fiction version of the narrative is easy to stomach, it's black and white and it doesn't have any depth to it.

The Last of Us 2 does the opposite. Instead of offering an easy to digest revenge fantasy, it forces you to see a bigger picture from different perspectives. It forces you, the player, to do things as characters in the game that are reprehensible, and with knowledge that we have but the characters don't, it can be incredibly hard to stomach. When the credits finally rolled on the ending of the game, I spent hours thinking about what had happened over the course of the story. I don't know if I've ever played a game that made me think as much as this did.

Is it a happy, easy to digest narrative that everyone will enjoy? No, it's definitely not. But it's a deep, thought provoking tale about loss, anger, revenge and forgiveness. It's a story, like the first game, about characters making the wrong choices for love and not knowing if they can live with the consequences. Yes, I understand why so many people didn't enjoy this game. It forces you to live in the shoes of people who have been wronged, and to understand them. It forces you to question the decisions that characters you love have made. It forces you to think. And not everyone wants to do that.

I found the gun-play, stealth, crafting, and set piece interactions to be very boilerplate and just disengaging on the whole.

The reason I bring this up is because TLOU Part II is, in nearly every aspect, worse than its predecessor. The main protagonists and general characters of the game's story are uninteresting and inferior to those of the original. The narrative is a mess with some segments feeling detached and unnecessary while the moral absolutism of characters' motivations and actions are simply at odds with the themes of revenge the game wishes to paint in shades of grey. The gameplay is largely the same affair from the original with minor superfluous enhancements and less brain-dead "puzzles."

I went in not expecting much, or about something on par with the original, but somehow came away with a newfound sense of disgust and disappointment. Thankfully, I got a full refund at my local game shop as the clerk was sympathetic to my and others' plight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The scene in the museum with Joel and Ellie is so beautiful and it honestly bumped up the score a few points for me. But that doesn’t change the fact that the game falls apart when you play as Abby. I didn’t hate abby as a villain at first. Wasn’t the best, but she had an understandable motivation. The way she ended up killing Joel was written so lazily and the character deserved better, but i tried to believe that the game could somehow make it worth it in the end. The stuff with Ellie wasn’t bad. Not even close to as good as the first one, but not awful. What this game fails to realize is the attachment that everyone has to Joel and Ellie. I honestly believe that there was nothing the writers could have done to make us sympathize with Abby. We know what Joel did and we don’t care. We had a whole game to fall in love with him and that won’t change just because one of the many people he killed happened to have a daughter. To make it even worse, when you play as abby it has nothing to do with Ellie! It’s a completely different story and it feels so disconnected from the game. What made the first game good is the connection between Joel and Ellie. This game took that away and then tried to turn the two of them into the antagonist. I don’t understand how the writers would ever think we could sympathize with the person who killed such a loved character. Expand

The graphics are good, the gameplay is fun, but it isn’t much different than the first one, but the story, oh boy the story was complete and utter crap. Now I for one could not care less about all these “sjw” elements that people are complaining about. The fact that people are complaining about that stuff makes people not realize the story is just garbage. Joel’s death was an embarrassment to a beloved character, but even that was not the worst part. Naughty dog decided to **** on Joel even more by making us play half the game as the person who killed him, and decided to try to make her relatable? Without spoilers, they took some bold leaps which could have paid off quite well and I like what I think they were going for in theory. The execution was awful though. The narrative ignores character traits that are well defined in the first game and leave huge glaring abyssal plot holes. It seems in favor of a fine tuned story true to the world they created, they favored shock and drama with no emotional pay off. I can deal with a lackluster story is the gameplay is okay, but the narrative they used is poor and draining to the point of not being any fun a all. Its not a game you look forward to playing. I knew it would be an emotional roller-coaster, but it lost all of the redeeming attributes of the first. It is so flawed that it actively detracts from the rest of the game that they got right. There is just no satisfaction to be had from the story being told, it's not just that the story is bleak, it's down right depressing and not all enjoyable to experience.

In game like the Last of Us story is king, and unfortunately the story really falls flat. There's still a lot to like about the game; it's not as horrible as people are making it out to be. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid fan of the original The Last of Us, I was really looking forward to playing Part 2.
I really liked the direction of the first game, the character development, the whole plot - it’s one of the finest examples in video gaming history. I wish I could forget it, just to experience it all over again.

However, I missed this unique experience when playing The Last of Us Part 2. I remember it as bleak, sad, empty, extremely violent most of the time, with only very few moments of joy. If you’re into that, this game may be for you.

It is is one of the most beautiful looking games available on PS4, with top-notch acting, soundtrack and level design. I'd wish the whole gaming experience was this good either.
Some parts of the gameplay are indeed more elegant compared to the original, but haven't really been improved. Gameplay still feels like the first one, this time with less environment puzzles – here it's just constant killing. I’m fine with violence in games. But I've got no wish to play a dark edgy sequel with one revenge story, that thinks it's being cleverer – and yet comes across as a misery simulator. It makes Ellie into a character that’s one of the worst in video game history.

I always choose story & characters over everything else. Compared to the strong cast of characters from the first game, the new characters are very bland. At some point you’re forced to play as Abby for 10 hours, who I couldn't relate to – or any of her friends. Even if I didn’t agree with her actions, it’s hard not to understand them to a degree. But the whole plot was atrocious and I’m not even complaining about the fact Abbe killed Joel (her father’s killer). I’m fine with that. But why did she kill Joel, after hunting him down for years – but let the killer of her friend and lover go? The game is a petty revenge story but in the end it isn’t. The story just goes nowhere. What did I even play for 25 hours? For me It wasn't a compelling story.

The playable flashbacks of the good old times were probably my favourite part of this game.
Because TLOU for me is and always will be about the relationship of Ellie and Joel. It's what made the first game special.
Of course I was happy when the trailers came out, that teased another Ellie / Joel adventure. Turns out, it was a fraud. Joel wasn't even supposed to play a larger part in this one, they just swapped his character model. I'd call this false advertising and to me it kind of feels like "No Man’s Sky“ all over again. I guess you can't trust anyone these days and I'll think twice before I’ll buy a Naughty Dog game ever again. And that makes me sad to write, because I loved this studio back in the older days.

Overall, the feeling Part II left, is the same after watching Game of Thrones S8. Disbelief. Disappointment. I feel sorry for the developers who have been working so hard on this game for almost a decade. Naughty Dog’s talented enough to make a wonderful and worthy sequel. They just didn’t.

Why a score 4? The story is something I never imagined. Characters make dumb decisions and there are my instances that "chance" (starting in the second hour) move the story along. I didn't want to keep playing because the cautious optimism of the first game is gone. The dialogue and overall plot of revenge is very cliche and the depth I was expecting never happened. Soooo much is based on perceived "shock" value.

The ending almost makes the entire game pointless. "UGH" sums up the narrative experience which in a single player game really influences how a game is rated in totality. My goodness!

Same gameplay more or less like first game but still awesome nonetheless. BUT the story is so inconsistent, it's unbelievable : Joel and Tommy would NEVER walk into a room with a bunch of unknown people like that, Joel walking right in the middle like ?!?!?!? Defeats the purpose of the character narrative from the first game. Even if he softened up and all, he'd be soft to all familiar people (Jackson; people he knows) and even if it's a blizzard or w/e he'd still be cautious. And when Ellie goes through the door to save him, Manny doesn't let Jordan kick her more then at the end he tries to shoot her, like what ?!?!?! And Mel who's "traumatized" from torturing Joel is like "we shouldn't leave any loose ends" lol. HOW CAN A PREGNANT WOMAN CLIMB ROPES , BALANCE HERSELF ON SMALL POLES, JUMP FROM STUPID HEIGHTS, FIGHTS AND EXPLOSIONS AND CAR CRASHES,.. ?!?! And the Seraphites, Lev and Yara talkin casually as if they're not part of that cult and growing up scarred and all, whaaaat?! And whenever an enemy dies "marco, omar, jhonny, nooo" shoulda given me the option to write letters to their families too, and bury them and all too, who cares, one twice, not evvveerry encounter, I'll never be attached to them nor care ^oh look we gave different names to every npc^ and most definitely wouldn't care about Abby even if you make me play her 20 more hours, it feels so forced and so inconsistent and pathetic. So many more stuff is unfathomable. Anyways, tbh most fun I had is "killing myself as Abby OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN" especially vs Ellie, god those death animations felt so good. Very poor pacing. Game tries to disorient me and force me to try to even care about badly written characters. Story feels so lacking and disespectful to its amazing first game.Trash writing. The graphics were stunning and the gameplay was smooth. I enjoyed how you go against dogs and rehashed infected (stalkers as an example) and had to plan accordingly.
However the story was a disappointment.
The death of the 1st main character was to be expected however how it happened was a shambles, leaving the character's death with little meaning other then a driving point for this second game.
This in turn is painful to those who played the first game and had built a connection to said character.
Granted, there was a few cool parts in the game however the negative greatly out weigh them.
