In the attempted process of asserting itself as a thesis on hate, this installment unfortunately only succeeds in displaying the shallower and all-too-familiar tenets of aggravating pacing and moral and emotional pedantry. The characters in this game (both new and old) morph jarringly from familiar and honest depictions of themselves into the clumsy caricatures into which Naughty Dog has shaped them; it seems not even the flawless performances by its triple-A cast could offset the disappointment of watching a beloved character act as though their scenes exist in a vacuum. The player is constantly subjected to the self-sabotaging efforts of the protagonists and antagonists alike, as each seemingly (but defensibly, given the pace of the game) forgets why they have made their own decisions. Here the studio suffers from the juvenile mistake of superimposing their priority of telling a story over the character's validity; the main characters all-too-frequently appear not as interesting players in an enthralling narrative, but more as commissioned actors under strict instruction to stick to a script that lacks focus or direction. Simultaneously, in a half-baked yet fully committed effort to elicit a response, the studio makes several bets with the player before investing exclusively on those least interesting among them: we are introduced to several original, intriguing subplots, only to be assigned exclusively to the one-dimensional and utterly unlikable main antagonist. The justifications for her exaggerated role in the story inevitably fall flat, resulting in the unanswerable questions of why such a cookie-cutter villain should take up so much of the story. There is simply not a satisfactory reason for the sustained presence of this character in this game.

The gameplay itself offers the most consistent alleviation of what is otherwise a flawed and dissatisfying experience. Several adaptations both major and minor were made to the already-solid control scheme and general layout of the preceding game, which make the combat encounters and exploration in this game feel much more thrilling, challenging, and realistic. The added maneuverability of being able to crawl, climb, and squeeze through tight spaces undoubtedly allows the player to experience much of the panicked, adrenaline-fueled momentum of the game's various skirmishes. Nevertheless, each perfectly-executed scene is tainted by the overhanging knowledge of how unrewarding the game is capable of being whenever there isn't anything to shoot at. Interlaced between what appear to be earnest attempts to ignore the tonal appeal of the series, the story occasionally delivers the promised peerless cinematic triumphs of which this game is clearly capable; when the script backs away from the opportunity to needlessly moralize and vapidly entertain to instead focus on the characters and how they would legitimately interact, the award-winning merits of the writers, actors, and animators shine through. Unfortunately, that ray of hope is too often strangled by the script's demands for misbegotten nonsense as opposed to thoughtful progression: if you are hoping for a cohesive narrative from this game, you are much better off sticking to the trailers.

If Naughty Dog had managed to tell a sensible, compelling story as a reward for the fans who have waited so long to hear it instead of prioritizing the cheap shock value this game is powered by, then the considerable improvements to gameplay as well as the depth of the emotional potential of the narrative would have made this the masterpiece that fans deserve. It is truly a shame that instead we have instead been distributed such a careless, disingenuous installment.

Before the game came out, they made an interview where someone, the co-director, i think or even Neil, said ''you dont need to kill any dog, you can avoid it'' , well that was a lie, i would ask a REFUND for this if you dont like any of that.

    MAJOR Spoilers below

Moving to the game, besides Joel's decisions not making any sense when he was alive or Ellie's decision at the end by not killing the villain bcs ''OH MY GOD, Joe- oh well... that took 1 sec but now i remember, revenge bad'' was stupid after the fact she kills hundreds of people that werent involved with Joel's death directly, if she thought she ended a revenge cycle, well.... BAD NEWS, those people she killed have probably friends that would do the same thing as her, so A POINTLESS and DUMB decision, which is the fault of the writer of the game.

Another thing i want to criticise is WHY would Neil want to self insert to spit on Joel's dead body and having sex with the villain + having a card where he thinks he is smart.
It just made me think that there was some **** message against the fans of the 1st game or even the ex-writers, it was disrespectful.

The only thing i can praise is the graphics and gameplay, so congrats for those that worked on that section, NOT the writers.

Expand

After a seven year wait this is what naughty dog gives it’s devoted players, a game that essentially beats every aspect of what everyone loved about the original to a bloody pulp, and then proceeds to spit on it. However the graphics, landscapes and generally game design are very good, I just wish they weren’t wasting on such a piece of awful storytelling. To wrap this up, the game upon finishing left an awful taste in my mouth, very similar to the feeling I had while watching films such as alien 3 and terminator dark fate. Then again I think even that would be giving it to much credit. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine a third of the John Wick movie following the guy who killed his dog and the director trying to make you feel sympathy for him with lazy storytelling. Then at the end of the movie John Wick decides not to kill him for no reason at all. That’s TLOU2 in a nutshell. An utter travesty and desecration of the characters we all loved. Zero character development, forgettable characters, massive plot holes, unbelievable decisions, and lazy storytelling. Grade A garbage! 0/5

The only reason all of the media and journalists gave this game perfect reviews was because they would be blacklisted if they didn’t and their wallets depend on licking the boot of fallen developers like Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll be talking about actual spoilers in the last paragraph. The rest of this review is spoiler free. This review that will be ignoring the so-called SJW/woke/whatever stuff. I know that can be divisive, so I'm leaving that out, and I think there's enough I can talk about without mentioning that.

To start out, they basically pull a GOT finale and give Joel and Ellie the Daenerys treatment by having them do things that are completely against what their characters have been established as. And they not only do it once, but three times, some worse than others.

That's before we even get to the company side of things. If you want to skip the company stuff, skip this paragraph. Normally I wouldn't include this in a review of the game itself, but I think it warrants mention here since many people are protesting the game because of Sony and Naughty Dog's behavior, such as the hostile workplace they've created and the blatant DMCA abuse when it's completely unwarranted. Some people literally only voiced their negative opinions of the game without showing ANY part of the game, and still got DMCA'd, which can take away people's ability to stream which is a huge source of revenue for some, essentially putting some streamers out of business for their opinions, and the fact they allowed a full blown and very revealing sex scene in TLOU2 while heavily censoring anime games (some with the same rating as TLOU2) months earlier for just being skimpy. There's also the blatant false advertising, such as them putting a fake scene in the trailer where Joel says to Ellie "you thought I'd let you go alone?" which doesn't actually happen.

From a gameplay perspective, there's no to little improvements over the first TLOU, so some people think it feels stale. I will be fair and state that TLOU wasn't really known for its gameplay, but rather its atmosphere and story. The only positive it has going for is the graphics. So assuming you review it evenly based on graphics, gameplay, and story, giving each a 33% weight, it makes sense the game is getting 3's and 4's out of 10. If you weight the story itself more heavily, it still comes out about the same. It's a visually stunningly beautiful game... But that's about it.

Spoiler section: The three instances of them pulling a GOT finale are these: Joel walking into a house and randomly announcing who he is, Ellie suddenly deciding to stop her quest for vengeance at the end, and Joel being the catalyst for her stopping. Most people who review this are so outraged by Joel's death that they fail to notice that they spit on his character more than once. Joel is merciless, mistrustful of others and outright says he would kill all the fireflies in the hospital all over again. He doesn't care who dies or who he kills. As such, it makes NO sense for him to walk into a room and announce who he is. It makes NO sense for Ellie to stop her quest of revenge, and it makes NO sense for the flashback of Joel to be what stops her since we damn well know he would have killed Abby without a second thought. And why the hell would you decide vengeance is bad only when reaching your final target and not stopping when you had to kill dozens of people OUT OF VENGEANCE to reach your target? And about Joel's death, I know in reality people often die unceremoniously, and their deaths are often underwhelming. Neil Druckmann outright said this game isn't supposed to be fun. But this is a video game. Video games are within the category of entertainment, a prerequisite of which is fun. So why would you make a game that isn't fun? Joel is a beloved character by the fans and he simply deserved better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. -I am at a loss with this game. From the written butchering of everything I loved about these characters, to the actual butchering of the characters I loved, to the complete loss of direction story-wise after the first hour of gameplay. What happened in the nearly decade long development of this game? Were all the original writers fired? Or were they overwritten by one man who thought he knew best, leading to a final season Game of Thrones situation that completely erased everything good that came before it.

-Visually and audibly stunning, but devoid of anything resembling a redeeming quality beyond that. It is not only baffling but cruel to force the player to interact with what was a vibrant world through Abby, a character who's backstory and motivations feel hastily put together 10 minutes before the game was supposed to be presented as complete, after watching her brutally murder the arguably most complex character of the series, who was the main draw for players of the first game.

-As for the LGBT themes that everyone seems hung up on. As any actual member of the community will tell you, if it's being forced this hard, you're probably faking it for the clout. Anyone with minimal skills of observation could tell that Ellie was likely lesbian from interactions and conversations in the first game, especially after the heavy obviousness that came in the DLC. So to overplay it and make it a constantly recurring theme and focus seems obtuse and forced. A person's sexuality is organic and who they are, not an add on that exists as a parallel to them.

-Conversations felt unsettlingly robotic at times, there was no driving force to connect with any new characters, who presented themselves more as paper cutout stand ins rather than new opportunities for connection and emotional exploration.

-Mechanically it was polished if unimaginative, drawing on expanding the capabilities of the platform on hardware level, and it shows how much focus that drew due to the complete and utter lack of any human connection anywhere in the game.

-TL;DR This sequel is the runny disappointing sh*t after the best thanksgiving dinner of a first game you've ever had. Even the most highly polished turd is still a pile of sh*t. Flush and forget.
