The Last of Us Part 2 is technical triumph but a narrative disaster. The writing in the game is amateurish to the point that it's difficult to believe that it shares any DNA with it's predecessor. As muchThe Last of Us Part 2 is technical triumph but a narrative disaster. The writing in the game is amateurish to the point that it's difficult to believe that it shares any DNA with it's predecessor. One facet of the first game that it was universally lauded for was the believably of the events and characters. The way the story unfolds in the sequel is the complete opposite of this. As much as you may disagree with a story's main beats, if the connective tissue is well crafted and cohesive and the motivations and actions of the characters feel genuine, then it will still resonate. Nearly every major story beat in TLOU2 comes by way of uncharacteristic stupidity and incompetence from the cast of generally unlikable, charmless characters; or by way of outlandish coincidence. One particularly galling recurring contrivance is Ellie's plot armour. The antagonists of the game have multiple chances to off her, but instead let her live for no conceivable reason, instead tying her to a table or some other cliche while they wait to be killed. Ellie herself has matured from a quirky, endearing, sightly rebellious teen into the personification of wallpaper paste. In fact, most of the characters are as bland as a bread sandwich. Frankly, the game as a whole is devoid of any fun or personality, with the exception of a few scenes featuring what made the first game work so well: the relationship between Ellie and Joel. These are few and far between, however. Separating herself from the bland cast of characters is the despicable Abby. Abby makes for a pretty good villain. You hate her. She's a mean, disgusting psychopath (her breathing like a pig in heat was particular repulsive during a certain scene). The problem with this is that she is also the second playable character. ?????? Moving on. The game's technical achievements and solid gameplay loop save it from being a complete failure. The game is undoubtedly the pinnacle of what a game can look like on the current hardware. The facial animations in the first game blew me away and the exact same is true in the sequel. The gameplay in the first game split people into 2 camps. Either you found it a terse game of cat and mouse which could explode into a frantic and brutal melee after a single slip up (like me), or you thought it was something you had to get through to reach the next cut scene. Well, it's essentially the same here but with a bit more going on. Not a lot more to be honest, but I think enough to feel somewhat distinct. Basically, if you liked playing the first one, you'll probably like playing this one. One gripe I did have was the unnecessary jump mechanic. You jump like an anvil in treacle, missing the mark often. When you do eventually make a jump, you will often cling onto icy metal or perform some other improbable feat of superhuman upper body strength. A fairly minor quibble but one I felt like mentioning. There's plenty more to the story and the writing I could complain about but I feel like this review has gone on far too long already.

To sum up, the game is a jarring, unpleasant experience that I would not recommend. If you're thinking of picking it up, watch the first couple of hours first and then make an informed decision. I hope I've articulated why the game is in fact bad, for anyone who thinks that it's just being review bombed by sexist alt-right scum or whatever. It's a sad day for Naughty dog fans.

The fact that the entire story is contingent on retconning established lore instantly makes the story a failure.

Other than Jesse, the game also fails to make the new characters likeable. Dina feels like she’s just there as the token lesbian partner. Abby is just an all around badly written character. Her motivations are cheap and the game’s attempt to make you sympathize with her falls flat. Lev’s character arc is a hamfisted sermon of identity politics that does not make sense in the context of the post-apocalyptic world.

A lot of people have compared this game to The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones: Season 8 in terms of how badly they butchered their characters. While these comparisons are apt, allow me to make another. The Last of Us 2 is a marginally better version of The Order: 1886. Both have great graphics, sound effects, and music. However, they suffer from an underwhelming gameplay loop and their stories are badly written. Actually, I would argue that The Order: 1886’s story is more digestible because at least it does not retcon established characters.

Acting is flat and, story is predictable and boring, controls feel sluggish, lots of poor audio and in general it is just a pretty picture with nothing new to offer. The only thing really this game has going for it is it's controversy, which makes it even more disgusting that they used social issues to prop up a game that would otherwise be just another flop.

A bigger problem than the game, or the divisive issues it tries to instill in us, is the media and critics and how they prop up content like this and straight up lie to our faces for their own selfish reasons. We can't forget that ultimately they work for us, the critics and the developers, they work for the people who buy their products. Do you think critics are buying these products? No, they get it for free and just shill their products so that we buy them.

The truth is, if we really wanted to get our point across there is only one way. We have to ignore them and simply act as if they don't exist. Even hating the products and spreading outrage is enough for these cretins to continue doing things like this since outrage sells. Imagine if they release the game, no one complained, and at the same time no one bought it. That would really be the only way to stop these things from happening.

Just a prediction, but I suspect we will see a part 3 that is even worse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an experience!!! I can understand some other reviews as this game doesn't take the same direction as the first where you only see what happens from Ellie and Joel’s perspective. This game makes you see the story from both sides which leaves you questioning the actions that you have taken previously in the game.
The game play is amazing as well as the acting and I believe the story has been made in a way that makes it divisive so you feel either love or hate towards the game itself.
The AI in the game has also been greatly improved over the first game where enemies (especially the infected) are relentless and if you are not quick enough you will take a lot of damage or get yourself killed.
At the end of it all it leaves you wondering whether it was all worth it especially when you see what it cost Ellie which ultimately left me feeling a little empty after finishing the game as it leaves you without any closure or hope.
In conclusion I feel this game is on a different level to the first game which if you look at it the same way you did on the first one you may not like how it turns out.

I am impressed by the graphics of this game ( I have played it) I love the environments, I never felt so immersed in a game, while disconnected. I will give you a list of the "goods" and the "bads"

    Good :

    Amazing graphic's
    Little details
    acceptable character development (debatable)

    Bads :

Killing An Important character "too soon"
    Dumb story decisions
    almost bad AI
    Terrible ending

We need to go into detail now:
first, The AI in not that great, and the story decisions are not neither.
Let me explain, you have Joel brutally murdered by Abby, At the first 2-3 hours of the game.
The other 20 hours is to get revenge, fine, but the ending is frustrating. you did all of that just for Ellie to realize "Oh, Killing people will get me nowhere"... While Joel would do anything for her, I was disappointed, I avoided all the leaks, played the game to be met by a bd narrative.

Overall, WE don't care about the graphics, we care about our beloved characters and their journey.
If the last of us sequel was just a book with great writing, I would buy it.
But They have put a lot of effort into this environment and the world around us.
    4/10..

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
