This game pushes the PS4 to its limits. It’s graphically the best game I’ve ever seen on console, at times it looks next gen. Story - There’s two for the price of one here, and if people can accept this isn’t meant to be a pretty story line with Ellie and Joel then the sooner people realise what it’s about the sooner they’d enjoy it for what it is. The storylines revolve around pretty much the same scenario but the consequences of one character can and will directly effects the other. It’s seeing the same event but through different eyes. It’s tough to do but I think naughty dog have nailed it here. It’s mainly a story for hate and revenge, it sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions (hate, sad, happy, sympathy) and it feels like this part of the game hasn’t changed as I felt emotionally connected to all the characters.

Character progression/weapon mods - it takes the original concepts and builds on them. There are more to your arsenal than you may think. In the first game, I never really used smoke grenades but here I’ve used everything in both Ellie’s and Abby’s arsenal (both characters are playable). I also like the fact their arsenal reflects them as characters, with Abby being more the militant character she gets more solider like abilities, Ellie is a scavenger and her arsenal and abilities reflect this. Level design - each level and encounter has multiple paths to take down enemies silently, this is found a very welcoming change. It built on the last of us where there maybe only one or two paths to take down enemies or the infected silently, here I think I could take 4 maybe 5 but if you alerted someone there was always somewhere to run and hide till the heat dies down. The level design and detail is fantastic you can appreciate the hard work naughty dog have done here. Characters - there are a host of new characters here. Their dialogue is well written, well acted and their individual personalities shine through very early on.

Conclusion - This game definitely builds on the last, it takes its core and builds on it. The story is fantastic and well written, but DO NOT expect a pretty story and is very dark at times. The whole controversy of LBGTQ stuff never really bothered me at all it’s not thrown in your face. Just because a character is of that sexual orientation doesn’t mean they’ve done it because they’re trying to highlight an issue, it’s just the characters personality. Ellie is more masculine than female and being of her sexual orientation only highlights this. Despite the praise I have given TLOU part 2, there are some little negatives that I’d like to highlight. At time’s the Abby story does drag on a little too long for my liking, this doesn’t however mean I don’t like the character cause I do. I just feel one of the areas we have to get out of just drags a little but the level design it’s self is very well crafted and executed. The only other negative is sometimes the back story of the two characters jumps a little all of the place. They’re well written and a joy to play but sometimes it didn’t quite make sense to have a teenage years scene when it happened. For me it’s a must play, if you can oversee some of the negativity it’s been harshly given and take it for what it is then you’ll massively enjoy it. Don’t think this is a nicey nice games after the events of the first game cause it isn’t.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm real person and was a big fan of ND for years! I still can't believe how you and Druckmann destroy such masterpiece like TLOU! Why did you do this to your fans and our loved character? The story of the game is really BAD. It's such crazy like if you played 10 hours as David just after killing and eating Ellie in the first part of the game. And Joel forgave him at the end, and after that David became new protagonist in TLOU. This is madness.
The only one thing that is good is graphic. Not even gameplay, it's almost the same like in TLOU1
I rating TLOU2 in next way
    0 for story
    3 for graphic
    1 for gameplay
BUT thanks to ND disrespectful behavior and lies to fans i cant rating this game more than 0
I hope some day ND will fix it and create real TLOU2 but not what they did

The story could’ve been executed better. I wish the story turned out to be about Joel and Ellie. But vengeance is a cycle of hate; and they truly did show how much of a destructive cycle it was just by how unorganized the game was. I feel like the team got stuck in politics and made so many changes that they hurried up and made mosh pit of flashbacks and concepts. Expand

Even though gameplay, graphics and sound immersion were top notch quality, the amazingly bad written story manages to make this game unenjoyable. Truly a shame for this franchise and especially when the first title was such a masterpiece...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was at the end as like a footnote but i feel it needs to be here as its more or less my raw emotional reaction to the game and is needed to understand the failure to maintain structure in the review proper. I'm a huge fan of TLOU and was more excited for this games release than excited for my own birthday party. I tried to make this review impersonal but it just ended up being jumbled and weird. That's because, at its core, TLOU was a deeply personal and small story. It's hard not to feel angry and disappointed at what this game is simply because we can all see what it could have been. I don't even know how to express it. it feels just sad, like they took all the good things from the first game and laughed at them just to come back when the story needed a "Hey, remember this?" or "Well this is what actually went down." moment. For big fans such as myself, this game just hurts, but not for any reason (like a good story) i wanted it to. Anyway, here is my more formal review.

TL;DR This game is beyond a disappointment on all but one level.

So, first I'll say this. As far as gameplay goes, this game is what a sequel should strive to be. All the previous systems are back and improve/tweaked in some meaningful way that makes them feel fresh, creative, and, well fun. However, therein lies the crux of the issue. The Last of Us (TLOU) was never became famous because its gameplay was superb. Rather, it was the story which caused fans to fall in love with the game. One might think Naughty Dog would be able to, at very least, create some interesting new characters, have a few memorable moments, and just overall tell a decent story right? Well no.
None of the new characters in The Last of Us 2 (TLOU2) are even remotely as interesting, deep, or memorable as any character found in TLOU. They all either have one trait/motivation or are show potential just to be killed or squandered. Take Abby for example. Y'know that once character that's a bruit with a soft side? Yup, sprinkle in some revenge for motive that's her character. Even though she is the only new character to get any meaningful development, it's still that simple to explain her. Compare that to Joel. In his game, he is a cynical old man, a unforgivable human, a loving father-figure, a kind-hearted person, and more.
Even more forgettable than the characters themselves is the story. It was simply a boring take on a revenge plot that didn't take any advantage of the threads the first game left hanging until far too late into the narrative. For about the first quarter of the game, the player is just wondering, "Ok but why did kill Joel?". Then Ellie has a flashback with her talking to Joel about the Salt Lake City Hospital incident and the player is immediately able to understand Abby's motives. However, even though the player is acutely aware of this fact, Ellie is still in the dark. This leads to a long and boring period of time in which Ellie is trying to find WLF members in order to track down Abby and learn Abby's motives; which, again, we already know. It tries to treat the scene in which Ellie learns this information as the big it reveal it should be; but, again, the player has known this for hours.
But worse of all is Abby's side of the game. After killing all of Abby's friends and regrouping with Tommy in chapters "SEATTLE DAY 1-3", Ellie and her group are about to go home when Abby kills Jesse and corners Tommy and Ellie. The player readies themself for this big final confrontation when... cut to black. "SEATTLE DAY 1" appears on screen and the minor confusion from what just transpired is replaced by dread as the player realizes that no, that segment you played as Abby was not strictly meant to make you think Joel was safe, but was foreshadowing to the long and boring segments in which the devs attempt to get you attached to characters whom you have already killed. To their credit, a lot of time is spent on two side characters who Ellie never saw until the theater, however they are as flat as all of the side characters while basically sharing the protagonist role with Abby in her part of the story. They basically take her on what amounts to a side quest so that Abby is conveniently absent while Ellie's groups kills Abby's. Not to mention that the game has done a somewhat decent job at making the player hate Abby at this point.
All the reasons listed here only scratch the surface as to this game's failures. Bare in mind, I only went into depth on very small parts of the laughable narrative. I never mentioned the any of the "torture-porn'-like scenes which liter the game, I didn't even try to explain the circumstances around Joel's untimely end (I could have made this entire review around that one story beat and not have room to say everything which needs to be said), I didn't mention the overt political messages, I skipped talking about the dialogue, etc. A full deconstruction of this piece is a Herculean effort and that honestly saddens me.

It tries to be an "Oh so deep" storyline that fails at every point, if I wanted a cycle of revenge story that is well executed I could just watch Naruto for the nth time. Characters act like idiots. I actually like Ellie's characterization up until the ending which left me unsatisfied and angry as a player since I didn't get any payoff whatsoever from the story. I've got a lot to say about this game, but I'd rather say just one thing. I've been sitting and watching the ending scene with Ellie and Abby like Matthew McConaughey's character in that scene from Interstellar. I was in extreme cultural shock. Even the RDR2 ending didn't hit me that hard. Definitely one of the best stories I've ever seen in games.

Yes, the game has its issues with logical holes and gameplay, but the main idea and philosophy of the game are so much bigger, so I just didn't care about everything else.
There's neither Good nor Evil in real life. Just your choices and consequences, which may be good for some people and horrible for others at the same time. TLOU2 is not the first game representing this philosophy, but this is definitely one of the best realizations so far.
    10/10 for me.

I feel really sorry for all those people supporting that dirty trolling and behaving like that on socials and on Youtube. Just stop, guys. Most of you so upset by the game just because you all expected something similar to the first game, but it turned out to be different. I understand that we all have our favorite characters that we want to be alive forever. But good stories don't work quite like that (remember Game of Thrones for example). There's a much bigger picture in this game.

Now to those who are basing everything off of, well, nothing really, I have one ask. Play it through, or at least watch someone do it. The things you THINK you know, you don't really know. The people who you claim to know in this game, you don't. This game goes in far deeper than any leak you have seen. Please stop judging 30hrs worth of a game on 3hrs that you know nothing about.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
