I don’t care if Abby is trans and Ellie is a lesbian, I just don’t care (good on them) what I do care about is that you’re forced to play as a character that I just don’t care about (Abby) I found myself during her gameplay parts, rushing and skipping the cinematic scenes. Not even looking about, looking for notes and clues and cards like I do with Ellie in her play through. I just don’t think Abbys story is good. You built up a character development in the Last of us 1 to have it shattered in Last Of Us 2, then make us play a character that we don’t want to be (maybe some people do). I get Mr Miller has to die, it’s good for the story, but the way he went out is just ridiculous. The Last Of Us 1 was profound and groundbreaking. Number 2 is just meh...if I was asked to sum it up in one word it’d be meh. I remain - Pag Expand

I love it, and I'm still processing all my emotions over it. But yeah the game, the ending it's beautiful, powerful, and very HUMAN. The entire story is wrapped around the concepts of cause and effect/confronting the consequences for your actions. Not everyone is going to agree with it, not everyone is going to like it, but frankly that's their choice. And I'm happy it exists.

The fake quarantine imo has a lot to do with what the hell is going on: many people's minds are literally becoming numb being taken away from the depths of themselves AKA limited to superficial consciousness, while certain other people who are also stuck at home, are "expanding" and feeling growth and going and doing certain things outside of their house while also agreeing that COVID-19 is a very serious disease to be taken into account, and they are also people who have worn a mask at a certain time just to go get the mail. Because it turns out that (speaking from a first world perspective) that if one million people die in three months by a single disease never heard of before, then the entire moral earth is also in danger of dying, and therefore a pandemic and a quarantine shall be called. Okay, I understand, is the responsible and reasonable response. But then all governments world-wide realize that due to over-population, quarantining the sick from their societies would be too much a hassle. So out of sheer laziness, they demand that YOU must stay inside, that you must follow their rules mindlessly which is actually NO RULES AT ALL. As a result, conflict is ensuing that is purely psychological and refined to this point and manner. Many people have killed themselves, degenerates showed themselves destroying shops and setting things on fire to "send a message", and CHAZ exists, and the police are as much a scapegoat for people's boredom to feel powerful as Hitler's and anti-semites' were in saying the Jews were the cause and the real problem and needed to be 'solved', in place of one's own outrage against unreason, and nothing else, which just then happens to be assimilated with violence and random lives being ended. This is inarguable, whether you like it or not. THIS mentality is then imbued into a videogame. I say "then" because of the way I started the order of this writing, but in reality obviously one did not cause the other. But this mentality and the release of this game with this kind of thinking is huge, and what exactly is the mentality? The great negativity in self-awareness and blaming of other people or people's as the root for your own problems, and then situating oneself to the point of saying that controlling or hurting someone else shall solve mine, perhaps dramatizing small back-and-forth dialogue conversations/heated arguments as LITERAL serious means for "war". Sound familiar? People know what I am talking about, we've all laughed at this. So, then one sees THIS happen in a videogame, but it had a predecessor. What was that like? There was a main character with so many individual traits that grant him the status of nigh heroic, along with a side character who is absolutely enjoyable, maybe corny at times, but is also part of the entire plot moving in the first place, and what we find is a grand transposition and misplacement of values when thinking of comparing this game to the game we have today. In the first game, Joel is established as heartbroken, suffering, hardened, but also we find moments where he is vigorous and alive. Ellie is your average 14 year old who has also just lost people she loved or felt highly affectionate for. Then we realize that she has a trait where she can't get infected---and the plot itself is simplified and understood ideally for the audience. Keep her safe, keep her alive, possibly a cure, as we predominantly play as Joel. Now I then BECOME JOEL, I AM heroic, my daughter was the one lost in the first few moments of the game, I am the one who cries when Joel finds elliie as she butchered David during the end of the winter chapter, etc. THISISWHATVIDEOGAMESDO. In comparison to books, films, sculptures, painting, other mediums of art, video games directly impact people in a refined way, a very refined way. I do not have to imagine certain things that videogames show for me, and the greatest games offer a balance between what I can do indepently within the game, while ALSO following the creators' lead, because that ultimately is what one does when playing a created game, even though the word "created" feels redundant in the sense I just conveyed. SO in TLOU2, the lead I follow makes no sense, like this quarantine thing, using the human debility of pity, in other words, assigning another one's SELF as one's own self, in order to understand a message or get a message across. How can I do that if it is ONLY myself that plays your game individually? Do you see the connection between this and the tyranny of the "qurantine"? A virus that is new and harmful TO YOU , but then assumed to be that way FOR EVERYONE? ASIF you know and understand everyone? This is a will to "equality" & is disguised as "revenge is bad". **** Expand

First my most likeable character gets killed and there is nothing I can do to prevent it ... I kill people to get to the end and the last hope I actually had for this game is dashed because choice is taken away from me again at the very end. I don't like this story. It makes no sense.

In my opinion the story is not quite as good as the first game mostly due to being split into two playable characters, but this can easily be overlooked as the characters are well developed. Most of the negative reviews this game has been receiving are vastly blown out of proportion and my assumption is that most people did not give the game a chance and jumped on the bandwagon of hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am going to base my review ln the main occurrences that happened in the game and usually the parts that people have either disagreed or disliked the game entirely

I fully understand the death of Joel was very stupid, disrespectful and forced, Joel is a smart character and should know all ways of ambushes since he was a hunter himself, Naughty Dog had yet to force this so the narrative can move on, they even made Tommy have the decency to say that they lived a few miles away, to bloody strangers.
This is only one point that I dislike from nd, but it does make sense this was because of how Joel killed Abby's father, although no one really does care for Abby as a character at this point, you need to understand that he killed so many people, it seemed inevitable that someone wanted vengeance

After this Ellie set off for revenge for Joel, killing off every friend related to Abby before reaching her and never doing it a lot of people have got mad and send hate for not killing off Abby seeming that this whole game was pointless, not killing Abby has a big meaning, ellie is breaking a cycle, if ellie ever killed abby, Lev wouldve wanted revenge, leading the cycle forever.

Either way this game was all really and entirely about forgiveness, it shows a lot of this in Ellie's memories, even the one at the end on how she was learning to forgive Joel on what he had done to her in the firefly hospital, we you think about it, its obvious.

Neil said this game will be about hate but he missed one thing on purpose to not ruin the game

There is a difference between playing a work of art which has lessons and playing a work of propaganda meant to teach you lessons first. Everyone knows revenge is bad and a cycle of violence is wrong we don't need to play a 25 hour game to get that message. Create a bad work of propaganda put in some identity stuff and then when you are criticized for creating ineffective art you can just say your critics are criticizing the work because of the identity issues. What a failsafe plan. It is possible for woke people to make a woke game that is bad woke doesn't guarantee a good game. It is possible for a sequel to be worse than original in fact that is often the case. People don't like this game because of the story destroying what they loved in the first game. Wokeness has nothing to do with it because the first game was woke too. Stephen King wrote some terrible novels some of them sequels as well. Druckman and company can make a terrible game and we can criticize it on those merits. The first game was woke and we loved it. Wokeness if not a factor in this criticism. Expand

Killing the character we all know too well, and nothing at the same time, was the biggest mistake of the developers. Not even killing it, but killing it in the way it was, was really humilliating, and I felt the humilliated person was ME as the player. Making you play as the killer in the second half of the game made me not sympathize with it, quite the contrary, made me hate it. This game was an utter insult to everyone who played the first one. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. I really tried to like this game. This game should have been good and i do believe that it is a good game but only if you have not played the first game. The quality of the voice acting is amazing, the graphics (at least on the PS4 pro) are great and i think the environments from the aesthetics of each location down to the environmental storytelling, through notes and such, is done superbly. Hell actually playing the game is quite fun. Where this game lacks is its prime narrative.

The last of us part two is entirely unfaithful to the characters that were set up in the first game. If your reading this review i am sure you already know that Joel dies. This alone has been a very controversial event and i want to break it down a little bit. People are not angry that Joel is dead. Everyone knew he was going to die, i didn't see any of the pre-release spoilers but i knew Joel was going to die. It makes sense in this world and for his character. the previous title already made it very clear that Joel is a man who has very few moral lines left to cross, who has done things that will mean his hands will never be clean. It makes sense that something from his former years will catch up to him. What has pissed people off is the way they handled his death. I think its very naive of naughty dog to think that killing off one of the most beloved characters in gaming would bring anything but backlash.

Games are a medium which need to, to an extent, evoke emotion and that is one thing this game dose not lack. I was sad, angry but mostly disappointed that such a massive personality in gaming would be removed in such a half arsed, brutal way that is handled so poorly. Joel as a character that we are invested in deserved a better death that being helplessly tortured in front of Ellie, before having his brains bashed in. So your telling me that the continuation of the story, that literally gave me faith and respect for the artists (Devs) that create in this medium, is over. Just like that. bang! done! That is it. One of the most compelling plot devices and relationships in the whole of gaming is done. And maybe i could have forgiven that. Maybe it could have been a good way to drive us as the player and really, really explore what hatred, anger and revenge will do too someone and the consequences of these actions and at first i thought that, that is where it was going. And to an extent they explored this with Ellie's torture scene and the killing of Mel, Abby's pregnant 'friend', and yes it did go further as you see Ellie after coming back from Seattle is suffering from PTSD but this didn't go far enough in my opinion.

I think that one of the key failures of this game is that its trying to be this big sweeping narrative where the bad guys can also be the good guys and vice versa but it just dose not work and it falls flat because we as the player do not care in the slightest about Abby and her motivations. i actually thought Abby's motivation was actually handled quite well. i think that this game being so heavily linked to the firsts ending is a very good idea. but once again we don't care about her. It dose not matter how many sad flashbacks there is or how many zebras you save with Abby's dad. The player, especially if they have played the first game, automatically hates her. And the game has the audacity to push into playing as her so you feel some kind of emotional investment in her as a character but by that point its too late. She has already been portrayed as a **** evil, psychopath which if anything is only supported once you have finished her game-play section. In my honest opinion the third and forth acts where you play as Abby are awful and so uninspired.

Now the ending. Oh my god.
I wont be commenting on any specifics as the final act of the game was not reviled in the leaks from a few weeks back but all i will say is its **** There is no conceivable reason as to why ellie would act the way she dose at the end and yes i know its a commentary on revenge and how a path of revenge will only lead to your own downfall. Its a play on the saying "If your going on a path of revenge, dig two graves" but i still feel this falls flat.

Basically i gave this game everything i could. i tried very hard but it has failed. And one of the worst things about it is that it makes you go through a emotional roller coaster with absolutely no reward or sense that the story is finished. the best parts of this game are Ellie's flashbacks with Joel. So my plead to naughty dog is this. De-canonise this game and do one of three things. One: never ever touch this IP again, Neil cannot be trusted to write another of these games. Two: remake it and tell the story how it should be told. Three: if you do make another game set it as a prequel to part 2 because the flashbacks that explore Joel and Ellie's relationship are the only truly good parts of this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game looks amazing, animations and environments are top notch. Technical side of it is at industry's standard.
But: the story is unsatisfying. If you decide to make a game that gives you no choice in anything except for how to handle encounters, you better make sure the story is compelling. 20 hours trying to catch a person to you let her go in the end? And 10 more hours playing that very person that you are chasing and you pretty much hate by that point? Why bother? Honestly I finished the game just to know the ending (which surprisingly made my impression twice as bad!).
Plus all the annoying flashbacks? Can't Neil just tell a story without flashbacks? I think at one point we were like 3 flashbacks within (yes, flashback within flashback within flashback).
Then the characters, oh boy the characters. Ellie murders HUNDREDS of people along the way, but is shaken by killing 2 or 3 more when the story needs it. Abby is just flat and cliche all over (they killed my dad, so I will spend the next 10 years hunting down the killer).
Don't listen to the critics, its political. Also don't listen to people saying review bombing is based on LG BT issues. I haven't seen any review here so far confirming that. The story is just bad. Either let the player choose, or serve them a good ******* story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog's finest work yet! It might not be what everyone wanted out of it, but it's use of storytelling and how it explores themes on revenge, forgiveness, morality and redemption is well crafted. It's definitely a game that is meant to be diverse for people who were fans of the first game's story, but this is a whole new story and the only way people will enjoy it is by taking the time to understand both sides of the situation that goes on among these characters.

Although the game might be polarized by some fans, people might hopefully start to appreciate it more as time goes by. I for one believe these Last of Us games will go down in history and be considered one of the greatest video games ever made. If there is a Part 3, this game might even be considered The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. I am definitely eager to see if Naughty Dog will decide to give this franchise one last game to not only complete it as video game trilogy, but to Ellie's story overall. This game alone proves that she is the true protagonist of these games.
