Like many other players, the original The Last of Us is the game closest to my heart. I’ve probably completed it fifteen times, and it inspired me to investigate programming, after which I changed careers to software engineering. I was very worried about a sequel, especially after all the vitriol surrounding the leaks.

Now that I've played the game, I can say that it is indisputably a technical marvel. The combat is TREMENDOUSLY improved from the first game (almost feels as good as the Leviathan axe from God of War), and the NPC AI is fantastic. Also, the voice acting is stellar from top to bottom. Most complaints folks have been making revolve around the story design however, so that's what I'd like to discuss here.

In the first few hours of the game, a horrific event takes place that has upset many players and fans. I have heard people say that it is lazy writing, and that the character decisions that led up to the event in question do not align with the characters involved. When I first experienced that scene, my gut reaction was to agree with these sentiments. However, as the remainder of the story unfolded and I personally reflected on the nature of the characters, I came to fully support the creative decisions made. I will be vague so as to avoid major spoilers, but I do want to (very humbly) offer a couple of general thoughts to consider for those who have or have not yet played the sequel. They’ve helped me better understand the writers’ choices:

    1. Remember that this installment takes place years after the first, throughout which our characters are in a community with amenities, security, and a culture of accepting outsiders. If our characters were the exact same as they were when we last saw them, this would be dishonest writing. Dialog and notes later in the game further support this character development between games.

    2. Consider the intrapersonal consequences of decisions made by characters in the first game. How could these decisions subsequently cause people to choose to behave?

    3. The world of this game is brutal, and nothing is too precious to be lost. Even in our real world, relationships and lives are cut short prematurely, and not everything is tied in a nice, tidy bow at its end.

To conclude, despite how emotionally exhausting this story was, I am forever changed by it. Its dark moments were some of the most most brutal I've experienced in any medium, and the high points had me smiling from ear to ear with tears in my eyes.

Play this game. With an open mind and an open heart. It is truly a work of art, and what I would consider an absolute masterpiece. Thank you Naughty Dog for your hard work and sacrifices in order to provide us with this experience.

This game is nothing but amazing, its a must play for this current generation. I UNDERSTAND that this game is divisive in terms of its story but aside from that which is totally subjective, the amount of effort and detail poured into this experience should be acknowledged.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never leave reviews for anything, but I felt compelled to say something about this game because of the ridiculousness surrounding it.

This game is good. Like very, very good. In MY OPINION and in my experience, it absolutely outdoes the first game in virtually every way. It was an extremely emotionally charged experience for me, I cried several times and found myself questioning every action I was making these characters take. The way the decided to tell the story is brilliant in my opinion. They make you dislike the new character, Abby, and her friends by making her do something horrible, and then through her section of the story and through her gameplay in the latter half of the game, they successfully (to me) humanize everyone on her side of things to the point that it made me genuinely feel terrible and conflicted about everything I had just done as Ellie.

The overwhelming majority of the criticism leveled at this game is complete nonsense. I am not normally the person to tell a fan base that their outrage is unjustified. I was angry at The Last Jedi. I was angry about Game of Thrones turning into a dumpster fire. This isn't that. The game is fine. If you don't like some of the creative decisions they decided to make, that's on you.

Joel being murdered and not a central playable character is not an objectively bad creative decision. It's just that you don't like it. Having to play as the woman that killed him is not an objectively bad creative decision, you just don't like it. Ellie deciding not to kill Abby at the end of the game is not an objectively bad creative decision, you just don't like it.

I can understand why the game going this direction would possibly make you feel some kind of way. But bombing it with 1's and 0's simply because YOU personally didn't like it is stupid and beyond childish.

And as for the extremely toxic "fans" and trolls **** on the game because Dina is Jewish, the lesbian romance, Abby's physique, and the fact that there's a young trans character in the game- you are all very simple, pathetic and hate filled people and no one needs to take you seriously.

So in closing, it's okay if you didn't like the game's story. It might not be your cup of tea. But personally, as a massive fan of the first game, I enjoyed every second of it. I think the new characters are wonderful. I think they made huge improvements in gameplay over the first game. The graphics, models, facial animations (and animations in general), sound design and music are all simply breathtaking.

It's a shame that there are some people leaving reviews here giving it a 10/10 that may not actually feel that way about the game in order to try and push out the review bomb. Personally though I think the 9.5 critic score is completely warranted. I enjoyed it that much.

    Peace.

They kill your favorite character from part 1 and you are forced to play for his killer.. But.. You need to go over it. That feel when you kill someone who has his own history and friends (Owen, Mel) and its not only NPC anymore is totally destroying me. I love it, I never played game like this, really. And end, when Ellie finally forgive herself and Joel and let Abby go is satisfying.
Thank you for this, highly recommending to play this game to everyone. Just go over first tragic part and enjoy rest of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A masterpiece. You go into the game well knowing something devastating is coming your way. The game delivered that. It might not be what people wanted. But honestly there wouldn’t have been a part two if not for that event. The flashbacks the game has provide you with some of the most heartfelt and purest scenes. The INCREDIBLY details in gameplay the movement the flow from cutscene to gameplay once again. The upgrade system and work bench. Everything was looked after with so much care and detail. The thing that I probably love the most about this game is the relationship between Ellie and Dina, the chemistry the warmth in the most subtle of ways. And the fact the game never made use of the bury your gays trope. A trope that has been used so many times and is so damaging to the community. In fact they did the opposite. We get a taste of what it can be like. And what in my opinion is to come after the final shot in the game. I don’t think I’ll truly like Abby ever, I understand, but don’t agree. And even if it starts out of guilt her most redeeming quality is caring for the seraphite children. Lev is one of the purest characters I’ve ever met and in many ways reminds me of Ellie in the first game. I wanna say the acting and talent this game contains are out of this world. Everything comes across so well. The screams are felt in your bones. And scenes that are happy make you sob happy tears. The game is supposed to make you feel exhausted by the end of your search of revenge and you do. It plays on your mind for hours on end. But to me after that last Scene with joel. The game ends on a much lighter tone. One with hope and closure. Expand

Joel knew he was a terrible human being in the past and murdered dozens of innocent people along with other evil people. He knew it was a long time coming. Abby is the female version of Joel. She has also killed ruthlessly with no remorse. This game is about ELLIE, ABBY and JOEL and there personal journey of losing everything they love because of their blind rage. This story was used to show us the cycle of violence and how it can literally tear entire societies and families apart. 10/10 for this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some of the combats were fun but overall the story was terrible. It would have made sense for many people to want to hunt down Joel and Ellie but this was just a revenge story for multiple characters. It makes no sense that the entire world stop looking for Ellie, Joel, or a cure. The game was intent on destroying everything fans loved about the first game. Joel, Ellie and Tommy are all destroyed, as are their relationships with each other and with everyone else. New factions are introduced and there could have been something very interesting there but the focus is purely on personal rage, revenge and hate. The story could have been redeemed a bit if Abby had offered to take Ellie to the Fireflies at the very end to complete what TLOU1 mission was and what Ellie had wanted along and what Abby’s dad wanted. The intro of yet another faction in the last 5% of the game was also never really explained. There werent even any lazy storytelling by way of found notes to give context to these rattlers, prisoners and chained zombies. Too many loose ends, too little character development, too little chemistry in the romances and no depth in these new loyalties/friendships that are introduced. Expand
