Damn. What is happening with game industry nowadays? This is not a video game. This is a video novel with a little bit of video game in it. "Press X at the right time to push enemy away". Bollocks. Gameplay mechanic that is 15 years old. Irritating main characters. It's good that indie games are getting better and better. AAA games are crap.

The only comparison I have is D&D of Game of Thrones, they just lost touch with what made it good or maybe they just don't care? Maybe they got some big business focus group together and figured this story would make the most money. Whatever happened it's a shame. Doubt I will venture into a part 3 if there is one.

    (hint: it's the characters).

    TLDR:
It's a story about revenge. The circle of hatred.
The circle is only broken because the story-writer throws in a "twist" at the end. (i shall not spoil it)
It sucked and certain parts of it requires willing suspension of disbelief.

Maybe you would enjoy it or maybe not. Buy it at your own risk.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story is just horrendous, over-wrought and doesn't pay off. Graphically, the wait was worth it, but I would've preferred some advances to the gameplay OTHER than dogs (like better, more interactive puzzle elements). TLOU was one of my all-time favorites, and to watch Naughty Dog obliterate all that goodwill. Why they thought ANYONE would want to play as Joel's killer is so stunningly short-sighted that I am sickened by the sales figures for this game, because someone as the turd studio is going to see it as a positive and good thing they did. I'm done with them. Expand

The score should be an average of 6/10, but because this is a primarily a story focused game and if the story is terrible neither the gameplay nor the graphics mean anything, so subtracting their scores from the total gets us 2.5 or 3 .. that's the score this game truly deserves.

And for full disclosure i watched the game being played online (entire playthroughs are easily available now), i didn't play it personally, and i wouldn't even if offered to me for free, and instead of going into spoilers i'll discuss the dichotomy between the critics scores and the user scores, the game critics gave it 10/10 and gushed about it being best game of the year/generation/all time because they are shilling and protecting their privileges and exclusive media access to future Sony and Naughty Dog games, and gamers gave it 3/10 because they are angry and frustrated for several reasons.

Not just because how the game play barley evolved in long 7 years, or because of the terrible story, lazy writing and demeaning sadistic treatment of the original characters, the nonsensical plot points and the meaningless ending, but also because of how the creators of the game (specifically Neil) are blatantly trying to push an progressive agenda (by Neil's admission and his creepy infatuation with Anita and her poorly researched and misleading anti-gamer series Feminist Frequency), and also because of the terrible crunch culture in Naughty Dog that made 70% of the team leave before game is done, many employees who left spoke of it, how it made some require hospitalization, and how it's so bad and pervasive that they couldn't find any veteran animators/CGI artists to work for them and had to recruit interns from the movie industry to work for them, finally people are pissed because of the false and illegal DMCAs filed by the shady shell company MUSO TNT Ltd that Sony and Naughty Dog used to strike and silence any YT channel discussing the leaks even if they didn't use any screenshots or videos leaked from the game, it was disgusting and very shady behavior.

To top that, Neil's blatant progressive agenda and his enforcement of terrible crunch culture are probably the reasons Amy Hennig left too (she openly opposed the woke progressive narrative that women are discriminated against in gaming industry, and said she never once felt discriminated against because of being a woman).

And the claim the review bombing is just because gamers are a bunch of bigots and hate gay/trans representation is nonsense, yeah people do meme and joke about it but it's not the real reason people are angry or review bombing the game, the expansion of The Last of Us called Left Behind had Ellie's lesbian kiss and her coming out as a lesbian and its user score is 8.2 and the Life is Strange game hinted a lot at two lesbian relations between the characters (Rachel X Chloe, and depending on player choices Max X Chloe) is rated 8.6 ... people have no problem with that if it's done right and the story and characters aren't sacrificed for it, but in TLoU2 it's not done right, it's done only so the writers and Neil can feel good about themselves and be congratulated for how stunning and brave they are by the woke activists and "influencers" on Twitter.

My final verdict ... SKIP IT, save your money for something better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best way to describe this game is if 2020 was a video game. I'm not even kidding. When you play video games, you play them to go up against fictional, mostly nameless baddies. Persona games you go up against demons and other personas, God of War you go up against supernatural fodder, Divinity Original Sin 2 you go up against Voidwoken and Zealot Magisters who want to see you hung with insane veracity, etc. Even TLou primarily focused on the infected and when it was human enemies they were so absurd that you were up against a cannibal cult leader who wanted to marry a 10 year old. The reason this is the case is so that games are an escape from the day to day grind and you have avenues to let out aggression on sprites in healthy ways.

The TLou2 gives you that in the first few hours and feels like a pretty damn good game. When you're going up against the infected, it's everything I would want it to be. Fun, fast paced, stealth based, etc. Then... the game goes loopty f*** and you're doing things that are unnecessary. Killing a pregnant woman, killing humans and animals where you actually hear the pain in the other people's voices of losing their friends, etc. At the end of the game all you have to show for it is everyone who was a lead character is either broken or dead. There is no hope, there is no love, there is no compassion. It's... a very nihilistic point of view. Playing the game when you started dealing with the Washington Liberation enemies started feeling like watching the original Martyrs, and that movie turned me off horror films. So, good job. You created a game with something to say. Only in trying to express progressive views and thought provoking ideas, all you achieved was hate and loss.

Graphics are great, some of the best on PS4.

Storyline isn’t well thought out at all. The infected aren’t even necessary to the storyline. They are just a means to tell a silly story, of two people who want to kill each other. It’s easy to care for Ellie, and see her side of all of it.

Abbys story could have been done well. It could’ve been interesting, and they could have made a game that created an environment where you cared for the character and what happens to them. But they failed at every turn. They waited for 50% of the game to be over to even teach you anything about the character.

I played the game a very long time after the hype died down. I came to learn that many many others feel they ruined the sequel to the original, and I have to agree.

The story doesn’t hold a candle to the original. They lost the magic that made the original story so gripping and entertaining. If this game was purely about Ellie, Dina, and Jesse I would’ve really enjoyed it. If the scars were somehow a common enemy, that made you have to work with Abby at some point, only to get to decide whether she lives or dies later, it would’ve been incredible.

More choices should’ve been in the players hand. They aren’t being brave by telling the story they did, but lazy. This game reminded me of all of the disappointment the last couple of years embodied, from The Walking Dead Finale, to the Game of Thrones Finale, Cyberpunk 2077s launch, and more.

Hopefully 2021 brings better entertainment, because 2020 carried a lot of bad, including the games released, such as this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Initially I was very much against a sequel to TLOU. The first game's ending left me feeling hollow and thinking about it for weeks but it was an almost perfect ending. It hit all the right emotional notes due to character growth throughout and it was far more powerful to let the audience imagine the rest of Ellie and Joel's lives and how they might turn out with the unspoken secret hanging over their relationship.

Then I got on the hype train. When this game launched, I saw the backlash but I put it wrongly down to transphobia. Then I played the first half of the game and thought "this is decent" and thought that the bad reviewers were insane. Sure the mechanics are basically the same as TLOU1 and the AI was dumber than a bucket of rocks but I was enjoying it. I actually thought that the Joel incident worked very well and, while the gameplay wasn't amazingly inspired, the graphics and motion capture was top notch. However, then I got to the second half with Abby. Oh boy, what a bloated, tedious mess.

I got the feeling that the developers considered whether they wanted to make a new game with a new protagonist or a game which followed Ellie from TLOU and couldn't decide so they shoved both games together and, by doing so, succeeded at neither.

At about 40% of the way through the game you are suddenly shoved into playing as Abby (similar to the Raiden bait and switch in MGS2 and received about as well) but the problem is that Abby is not at all interesting and it makes the next 55% of the game an utter slog. Abby interacts with characters you don't care about, advances an almost utterly irrelevant plot and almost all of it could have been cut out of the game and the plot would have been a lot tighter. The point the game is seemingly trying to make is that Abby is a human too but that's already blatantly obvious and any subtlety goes out of the window with the game repeatedly hitting you over the head with it. Yes, revenge is bad, we get it.

It's like if TLOU1 had switched from Joel's perspective in the midst of the denouement and then insisted that you played as Marlene doing unrelated things for 15 hours. It would have utterly destroyed the pacing and ruined the ending; that is what happens here.

The ending also renders the entire plot pointless and was immersion breakingly contrary to the character's previously established motivations and characterisation. That said, because of the pacing issues I was just glad that I had slogged through to the end. There was no real emotional pay-off. When your main emotion is "phew, glad I finished that" then you know the plot has failed.

The game succeeds on graphics and game mechanics but utterly drops the ball in relation to story and character arcs. For what is, above all else, a story-driven game a bad story and forgettable ending is a cardinal sin and one which can't be excused. Contrasted to the ending of TLOU, I wish they had never made a sequel as it retrospectively makes the ending of TLOU worse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a 0 or 10 rating game. It depends on your style. I'm single-player focused. I play games for their visuals/atmosphere, play style, and most important storytelling.
On visuals/atmosphere this game is phenomenal. One of the top in this gaming generation. Respect on that front.
On play style, the game style is interesting at first but reverts to stealth kills or smashing square in most cases This gets boring very fast. Replayability is out the window. Its a one and done if you can get through it.
On the story side, this is where the discussion starts.
Whenever a game has to force a character out of character to make the story go forward, I lose interest. Whenever events don't make sense, I lose interest. Let me say, I lost interest big time.
Normally I don't review games, however, this mess of a storyline compelled me, specifically because of all the hyped 95-100 reviews by critics (hacks).
Say we keep the events as is, the method of telling the story is massively mistaken. Had the game started with Abby's story, her emotional turmoil of losing her father, her hunt of Joel leading to killing him, then switching to the story from Ellie's side, I might have been inclined to appreciate her point of view.
However, seeing Abby killing Joel, then switching to her side, there is no chance of me liking her. Whether I play 10 hours or 50 hours. I've already made my mind.
Forcing me to kill a dog, then reprimanding me after the fact, by forcing me to feel guilty, cheap storytelling tricks.
Killing 50+ humans, then feeling bad cause the last human I killed was pregnant. How does that make sense?
Killing every human in sight, then stopping at the last one, suddenly makes things ok?
Leaving a great life, to go kill someone. Killing everything in your path, then letting them go? It is soo out of character that it feels extremely shoehorned. The character of Ellie acts 2 dimensional in such an unrealistic way that it doesn't feel real.
It makes me think of Season 1 of Arrow, where Arrow kills 30+ bodyguards, but only wounds the leader. Why is this 1 person more important than the other 30 I've brutally beaten/murdered?
In my opinion, the story was deliberately set in a way to mess with people, for pure shock value thinking this is great storytelling.
TLOU 1 was a great story, it built characters, built attachments, made me care about 2 fictional characters. It made me like Ellie and Joel so much, that I didn't care that Joel's choice stripped humanity of a possible cure. Screw the cure, I like these 2 characters and their interaction. That's powerful storytelling and character-building!
TLOU2 did nothing for the characters. Beyond Ellie, who I liked cause of the 1st game, there is not a single character that made an impact on me. Sadly enough, had I known Ellie from TLOU2 only, I'm sure I wouldn't have liked her either. Her actions are incoherent and give no closure.
This is where my scoring of the game goes to a 3.
    No character attachments.
I won't remember this game positively.
If someone mentions this game to me, I'll advise them not to play it.
Sad to see a game with such great potential being wasted for mere shock value and cheap storytelling tricks.
Great storytelling will make a game live forever. Nice graphics won't. I'd play a remastered TLOU1 anytime, there is absolutely no way I'd play a remastered TLOU2 at any stage.

The weird part is that she might have worked as an antagonist, but the game forces you to play as her for half it’s run time. All I wanted to do while playing as her was to kill myself. If you're going to make a game that pushes the PS4, that touts PS4 Pro enhancements, and that is supposed to look great on a 4K TV, don't make film grain mandatory. Offer an option to turn it off. We don't buy new technology to play a game that looks like it's running off of a VHS tape. As for the graphics themselves, it's a fine looking game, but not the best I've seen from this generation. Many textures are rather crude. You'll come across many items within the environment that don't even look like they have textures -- they're bland, washed out looking, and muddy, almost looking like they failed to load like in old Unreal Engine 3 games. You'll also notice a lot of pop-in within the environment as you move throughout it. All of that said, the animations within the cinematics are tremendous, lending a realistic feel to the characters even if they're merely video game characters.

As for the game itself, it's the first game improved. You can now go prone in stealth, making encounters more enjoyable. Other than that, though, there's not much that has changed. If you liked the gameplay in the first game, this is that but slightly better.

Now where everything falls apart is the story. I'm not going to get into politics or social commentary, I'll specifically talk about the game. This is very much a story that pretty much ruins the first game. While it has its highs, its lows are incredibly low. Not only does it retcon some things, it ruins a lot of the goodwill that they had built with the first game. I'd say that 65% of the story is outright bad. That doesn't make me happy, either. The first game is one of my favorite games ever. The Last of Us Part II didn't ruin my love for that first game, but it does make me wish it would've been a one & done.

This is my honest impression, as I'm not interested in review bombing. If you come to TLOU merely for gameplay, I'd say maybe it's a 6/10, but I do not; I came mostly for the story, but I was disappointed with the presentation, too, after much was said about how strong that aspect was. I'm unsure why outlets like Digital Foundry found no issue with the low texture quality on many objects. I'm talking PS3 level quality. Overall, it doesn't look like a PS3 game, it does look like a PS4 game, making the low quality textures within the environments, and the heavy use of film grain, all the more jarring.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
