This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is hard to rate this game. The Last of Us is a legend, but this sequel makes you forget about it. When 7 years ago it was announced, we all hoped for something groundbreaking. Unfortunately, cult around Neil Druckmann's writing was wrong (including me). This game is beautiful, not Red Dead Redemption level of graphics, but it's amazing (what's funny, Uncharted 4 looks very similar). Gameplay is the same old game with newer animations, which is good if you love the first one. But the story, oh boy, the story. Killing Joel right on the beginning without any respect was the worst decision of the franchise. Models we're swapped, Joel from trailerS was replaced by Jesse. Joel in some scenes was replaced by young Joel, so he was not part od the story, this was just a flashback scene. And the worst... Game forces you to play as Joel's killer for almost 12 hours. Writing is cheap, full of plotholes. No one had a problem with Ellie being gay. Left Behind has great reviews. But Naughty Dog tries to tell people if they do not like this game, that means they are bigots. They made mistake, an enormous one, but they will not admit it. Franchise ruined. Expand

The story is utter garbage that doesn't add anything meaningful to the first one. Some games aren't meant to have sequels. Some stories stand on their own. Star Wars is an ideal comparison. If you like TLJ you might like this game. It takes the characters you grew attached to and throws them away for cheap twists to tell a story that has been told a hundred times already and replaces meaningful characters with some of the most unlikeable ones I've ever seen in a video game. They aren't bad, they just have nothing about them that makes me invested in who they are, and I couldn't care less to see the rest of their arc.

This was a colossal waste of such a massive opportunity for the story they could have told with this game. I appreciate the effort made by all of the dev team. The design of this game is fantastic. The detail put into the environments, animations, facial expressions, particle effects and so much more is second to none. You will not play another game on PS4 with this level of polish and quality. It's just such a shame that it couldn't have been an excellent story, and have all of the detail the devs worked so hard to build in it as well. I'm just... disappointed.

A great game must be completely ruined by political agendas. I was completely turned off through the entire game by the almost constant portrayal of Ellie as a lesbian with her girlfriend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Concerning sequels, I find it is difficult to completely weigh them objectively. The game cannot exist unto itself, and because of that, it is already at a disadvantage. There is a lot to love and loathe about The Last of Us Part II.

The graphics of this game have been praised enough, and though they are fantastic, graphics alone will not carry the title. Thankfully, they do not have to. They work in tandem with aspects which I enjoyed from The Last of Us to make a game which is a worthy sequel. The controls and style of it echo that of its predecessor, and it carries on the tradition of attempting to ground the experience in some semblance of reality. The world is harsh and makes no promise of life to anyone. While this effort is appreciated, it can seem jarring at times. In private conversation, I have jested that the game is a "depression simulator," and while the joke may fall flat for some, it is no less poignant of a synopsis in my humble opinion. This is, by no means, a shortcoming. In fact, the most effective of stories, I find, are the ones that force me to deal with a range of emotions, which this game does effectively at times, and ineffectively at others.

Much of the positive emotions I have come to associate with the game, are derived from heartfelt moments between Ellie and Joel, of course. Their interactions are heartwarming, and the emotional beats of their story feel as personal as the two of them. There are elements of environmental storytelling which persist, and the game does not shy away from showing the depravity that takes hold in a post-apocalypse. Though there are moments which pull one away from the despair, they are tucked away behind flashbacks. The knowledge that this comfortable lull is a fleeting moment nags at the back of the player's mind. It will end, forcing them back to the discomfort of the main narrative.

While these flashbacks are some of my favorite moments in the game, I fear they are also misused at times. Some events seem out of place, as though they would have been more beneficial if utilized earlier on. The attempt at getting the player personally invested in the other playable character, Abby, and her compatriots, seems to fall quite short. The player grew to appreciate and empathize with both Joel and Ellie over the course of an entire game. The same cannot be achieved for an entire group, let alone one character, in a far shorter amount of time. In fact, I would argue that Abby should have been the initial playable character following the prologue. Starting with her recurring nightmare and inciting action for her quest for revenge, and subsequently viewing the end of the original game from a new perspective. It would have also allowed for the player to observe the same all-consuming force of vengeance taking its toll upon Abby, much like it would Ellie. The difference being, that Abby's vendetta stops with Joel. It is not allowed to bleed over to those immediately around him. There is the great potential for an incredible story here, but I fear that it may have become too enamored with the idea of saying something profound.

Whatever it attempts to say is irrelevant. At its core, this series has been one focused on its characters. It should not be a fable. It should not attempt to lecture the player about morality. Morality means nothing in this world. You have already been made party to dooming any hope for a cure. No, this game is not about what is right and wrong. It is about human relationships, and the depths to which people will delve to endure and survive.

I had serious reservations going in owing to the massive outrage the spoilers had created, which I myself somehow managed to avoid, and some key moments pissed me off just as much as the rest of them, but it didn’t detract from the experience. If anything, the events in question lent credence to the overarching narrative that would otherwise have been unconvincing and unsustainable in the long run. Characters are well written, extremely well acted, and complex in ways that I’ve personally never experienced before - I spent most of my time not knowing whether I loved them or hated them.. but I was never apathetic towards them - I spent much of the game debating internally as to who’s side I was really on, and I don’t think I ever got a conclusive answer. Bottom line is, I think this one is just as well written and well directed if not more so than the first one.

As for the rest of the stuff that constitutes a video game, everything is top notch here. The visuals, sound design, gameplay, moment to moment stuff is all some of the best I’ve seen to date. What really impressed me were the animations and how everything in the world reacts to your presence. Characters interact with the world and each other in convincing ways, there’s weight and inertia to your every move which adds to the realism and serves to raise the already lofty stakes even higher. The atmosphere is superb.. Post apocalypse Seattle is gorgeous while simultaneously being oppressive and foreboding. There are moments here that had my heart going faster than even the most accomplished horror games have managed to achieve, and yet I couldn’t help reveling in the glory of what Naughty Dog have created here. So often I found myself stopping dead in my tracks and panning around just to take it all in.

The gameplay is also first rate here. I will concede that it may not be for everyone, and if you’re looking to play a traditional third person shooter with over the top action then you’ll likely be disappointed. This game moves slowly, forcing you to absorb all the sensory stimulus it throws your way, then kicks it up out of the blue and sends you scrambling for cover. Everything here is deliberate and requires commitment from the player. In short, it is the most natural feeling evolution of the gameplay from the original - it’s more refined, mature and enjoyable, but if you didn’t like it in the original, you likely won’t enjoy it much here.

All in all, I am so incredibly glad I didn’t buy into the negative hype and avoid this game like I was considering doing at one point shortly after the leaks came out. This is an absolute must for anyone who played and enjoyed the original. At the risk of sounding cheesy (cheeky?), my only real gripe with the game is that it has effectively ruined 98% of all other games for me going forward. I was attempting to play this other game last night shortly after beating the last of us 2, and I couldn’t help but notice the clunkiness of the animations, the texture clipping, the lack of reaction from the environment to my character, and I'm talking about a game that I had played previously and thought was perfectly fine up until I played the last of us. Seriously, just seriously, do NOT listen to the review bombers with political agendas here - you do NOT wanna miss this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First things first: technically, this is a tour de force for the PS4, even on its last legs. A great send-off for the console and a reminder of what it was able to achieve through its lifecycle. Naughty Dog's technical prowess is (maybe) only rivaled by Rockstar. That alone should warrant a better score, but I'm playing it for its story.

On the story side of things, the game wants to teach you so many moral lessons that by the end of its 25 plus hours (which quite frankly, became a grind), I couldn't care anymore.

I played the first game scared to death that something would happen to either Joel or Ellie because they made us care about them so fondly. That bond ended from the get-go...yes, Joel could die (and die he did), but in a proper fashion/circumstance. They just killed him to show us that any action deserves a reaction (wow, really?) and make sure his previous decision-making (saving his "daughter" who wouldn't?) couldn't go free of its reckoning.

The game's sense of self-righteous is so pretentious – and to an extent, really pathetic – it tries to shove down your throat that it's better than you while forcing you to do things you wouldn't do if you had the chance to decide for yourself.

With so much shady stuff coming from the studio policies and how they treat their people, it bothers me that Naughty Dog dared to think they could get away with trying to preach over ethics in life through this regrettable story.

And no, this has nothing to do with Ellie being lesbian, etc. People bringing that up to save face for Druckman's hypocrisy are the real phobics.

Having said all of that, zero is what this game deserves.

The game was advertised as Ellie and Joel. This is what a lot of people wanted and expected, but it wasn't what we got after 7 years of waiting. It wasn't even really about Ellie when all is said and done.

The story was a "two sides of the same coin" comparison between two people, one of which no one really cares about. It wasn't written intelligently, but in the most "edgy" way a story could go... and there's a reason people don't write stories like this. The amount of plot holes that were embedded in the "redemption" arc for half the game can't be ignored and there were a lot of moments that confused me as to how they thought this writing would work.

There were a lot of great things about the game. The environments looked amazing and carried great atmosphere. The lighting, the greenery and the torn cityscapes were super cool. The core gameplay was very similar to the first with a small handful of new additions. After 7 years I would have expected a little more out of the gameplay, but at least they stayed true to SOMETHING from the game everyone loved while improving it a bit. The music was really amazing and I think the guitar sections were a really enjoyable little distraction. There are segments of the story that featured the Ellie & Joel dynamic, with a focus on playing as Ellie, which were hands down the best part of the game because it was what I expected the whole game to be. They were done excellently and made the ending that much more bitter. The new side characters that interact with Ellie were also pretty cool, but weren't used enough as Ellie's playable game time is too short to draw any connection with them. That being said, this is a story driven game, and they so willfully disgraced the first game and what we wanted that I can't give it anything better than what I rated it. Doing something for the sake of subverting expectations is a horrible idea, especially when the success and hype of something was dedicated to those expectations.

In the end I'm just mostly disappointed I didn't get to play the game I was advertised since Joel & Ellie had such an interesting and developed dynamic. They could have done something so interesting, but went for what they thought wouldn't be obvious. I expected them to do what they did because it was the easiest way to agitate your emotions and I really expected more from their storytelling. You'll really start to catch onto the story beats pretty quickly when you realize how they're telling it.

If this game was made after fans were "pressuring" (the money and demand was there, no pressure needed) ND to make a sequel after they said they wouldn't, I would never expect them to pull what they did. It completely alienates the people who loved the first game by taking the game in such a different direction. TLOU2 was possible because of what the first game did, and they acted like it was an entirely new IP where they just used the characters and story from the last game as cheap emotional tricks. The game didn't leave me satisfied in any way by the end of it and I'm really wishing I didn't play it because it just left a bad taste in my mouth and spat on what I loved about the first game.

If you want something cathartic, don't play this. If you want to be sad, go for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie in TLOU1 was probably the most likeable character I'd ever seen in a game. To say she was charming feels like an understatement. The very next story about her that the devs want to tell me has me being trained and conditioned to dislike her for 15 hours. THEN they make me play as unlikeable Joel-Killer for another 15 hours. And at the end of it all they expect waterworks from me when she can't play the guitar bc of her stupid failed revenge mission. And all that on top of a messy story with a lot of cringey moments and barely any Joel. And every time Joel was there it only served to bum me out. When the first game ended I remember it being a "wow what a cool experience" moment. Didn't get that at all from this one. Expand

Besides the identity politics & woke SJW stuff (there is a lot of this. It even has a pointless and disgusting sex scene), there are many more things wrong with it.

    - the story is swallow, makes no sense and has some plotholes (for example, infected people living in freezing temperature, with no food)
    - the main theme ("cycle of violence") is dumb and poorly written and full of contradictions
    - some characters are very unlikable, others act like idiots
    - the ending is bad and unsatisfying. In fact, it might be the worst ending to a video game I have ever seen
    - some of the dialogue is pure cringe
    - gameplay is repetitive and the game is way too long
    - the jump button is overhyped and plain stupid
    - no multiplayer

The only redeeming part are the good animations and the graphics. However, there seems to be a masive downgrade when you compare some scenes to what was shown in trailers. And I'm not a fan of Ellie's face being redesigned (it's not about her growing up, she looks weird even in the flashbacks). Hell, they made even Marlene uglier. Why?
Also, I guess the music is pretty good but it's imposible to enjoy it when you are annoyed because of the plot.

To sum it up: repetitive gameplay, great graphics, horrible story. And since this is a STORY driven game, I can't give it anything above 3. Sadly, I must say I'm very worried where the gaming industry is heading to.

Don't play this game even if it's free! TLOU2 is a disgrace to Sony and the entire gaming industry! Game journalists should be ashamed for their false advertisment!

Of course, the visuals are stunning, and so intricately filled with detail. The gameplay is very similar to TLOU1, but has some definite improvements and new features.

The entire atmosphere of the game is haunting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Crawling through tight spaces, you KNOW that you're in for a scare the entire time, and yet, when it happens, it is still startling.
