TLDR AT THE BOTTOM OF REVIEW

The linear environments which set the scene of the first game are hugely expanded upon in this game; weather it's exploring a quite suburb of seattle or being forced into a claustrophobic, dark and frightening underground system, there's no injustices served in terms of the environments crated and their atmospheres. Beautiful juxtapositions are seen in every single environment always reminding you that no matter how dark this world is there's always what seems to be room for hope to come from the most unexpected places. Schools, hospitals and apartments where nature has taken over are opposed by the small glimpses of hope from humans trying to get back to a somewhat new normal way of life surviving; notes, dwellings, camps, and societies show that there will always be something to fight for even if to some it could be moral wrong, as the world is not black and white but a grity, dirty shade of gray. It's just as much fun surviving in this game as it was the last. Crafting bombs, laying traps and thinking about your next move is just as much fun as it is tense and frightening. There's always room for error and it's brutal when it goes wrong, as you'll have to do everything to get back on the proper foot. This is where the gameplay shines the most for me as the new features such as hiding in grass, new bad guys and factions will keep you on your toes.

Although some of the characters can fall short in this story of being amazing, they're still none the less solid. Fortunately none of them feel as if they were placed in the game to push an agenda or political view as you might have heard people complaining about. Weather you love or hate the characters there's no denying that they have real emotion and depth behind them and their relationships feel organic and true to themselves.

Lastly for the positives, the accessibility in this game is what every single developer should stride towards. Weather you hate or love the game, there are so many ways to customise how you play your game. It's never been easier for someone which unfortunately may have never been able to pick up a game and play without difficulties, to actually just play a game and enjoy it with what I hope is little difficulty.

Sadly the story is very hit or miss, however it should be stated that this game was never meant to satisfy everyone as its meant to decisive and it's certainly done this. For every high point in the story comes a low point and it can sometimes fail to hit the mark by a lot. Although the characters themselves are amazingly thought out and acted, there are some motives which I agree with the majority of players don't make sense. It's not to say the story is bad, but it's extremely convoluted.

Much like the story the pacing is extremely slow and detrimental to the point where I had to take a break for a few days just to be in the mood to go back to it. The fact that it darts around time wise and tells the story step by step is draining. They almost treat the player like a child sadly which is almost insulting, as there are plenty of times in the story where can assume what happened through dialogue etc... But instead they insisted we play it. I agree that this was probably a good call as by the end of the game you can really put yourself into the main characters shoes as they themselves are drained, but there is a LOT of unnecessary filler. Together they unfortunately bring down what could have been an immersive and fun story. It's not to say the story is bad, it's the structure of the story. It's fun piecing things together but for a game which relies heavily on human emotions and the cost of life it seems to just skip over these themes like it's nothing and go straight to revenge, which is the main theme of the story but without the foundation for revenge or a motivation and understanding, it can fall flat. TLDR SECTION:

    Pros:
    Gameplay
    Graphics Environment Sound design Characters
    ACCESSIBILITY

    Cons:
    Convoluted story
    Slow pacing

The last of us part 2 is an almost polished masterpiece in most ways, however it falls flat at some memorable points as well as by some of the themes it conveys. As I said before it is a quintessential must play for a fan of the first game as it builds on the world extremely well overall, however you HAVE to go into this game with an open mind, accepting it might not be what you want but it's going to be one hell of a journey. Lastly if you unfortunately find it hard to play games due any kind of disability I'd recommend picking this game up eventually, it's a solid experience and has a huge array of accessibility features for a range of people.

Graphics and gameplay are incredible, as is always the case with ND. I highly recommend playing on survivor difficulty - it added about 20 hours to the average game time for me. It's not frustratingly difficult which is good - instead it makes every encounter feel like a puzzle, and the world becomes even more brutal and immersive, where you really appreciate every resource that you come across.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a game good in technical aspects, so I will just take on history aspects: Its a deep story, it's not about revenge, revenge is the plot which is used to create the story, which is all about the characters, their moralities and the consequences of these conflicting, about growth, about loss, about tragedy It shows us a villain murdering in cold blood our favorite character, and it makes us hate Abby, and sets us players on the same revenge quest as Ellie. Everything flows like a normal story and then it comes to a moment where they put into Abby's shoes, almost everyone hated being put in that place, but after a few hours, many players, myself including, stop hating Abby that much and see how she is an actual person with a good heart and how she suffered, and how everything that happened to her, the death of the fireflies and her death lead a good person to commit horrific actions, like killing Joe, which she, later on, realizes that it didn't bring any pleasure, it didn't fulfill the emptiness that she was left with after her Dads death, who in the end was just tryna save the world. her vengeance only brought tragedy and pain, her friends died bc of it, and she goes after Ellie, tries to kill her but stops when she had the chance, bc she knew nothing good would become out of it, this was only possible bc Abby was no longer the ruined and devastated monster we saw, she went back to being a good person bc of two kids who saved her life with who she felt compassion and created a bond, willing to abandon everything she had for them "you are my people" she said to Lev, she abandoned the wolves, I cause she was fighting for even though not believing in them truly. She simply needed something to fight for. All her friends were killed, her love, her pregnant friend, for the "daughter"/friend of the guy she killed for killing her father, she had the chance to finish Ellie Dina and Tommy and she was gonna do it bc of all the rage she had within her, but Lev suddenly stops and then the good person in her kicks in her, she realizes that that would never change things and she goes away, now that's character growth Abby is Like Joel, a good person doing horrible things because of a tragedy in the past, and a kid changes her for the better again... Abby's revenge quest is also similar to Ellie's, with the difference that Abby, lost way more than Ellie they are all good people doing or that did horrible stuff The game doesn't want to forcibly like Abby but to at least understand that she is also human and that there's no right or wrong in this situation Then Ellie years after is presented with the opportunity of getting her revenge, and she doesn't get herself to do it because she realized what Abbie realized way sooner than her, and that's why Abby didn't want to fight either... Ellie loses everything and is devastated, all she went through was not worth it even by killing Abby, she lost friends, her life with Dina, she did horrible feelings she regretted it, all in the desperation of trying to fulfill the emptiness and the trauma she was not able to live with. and we, in the end, find out that Ellie didn't simply want revenge for joe, she had finally given the chance to Joe, for them to rebuild their relation, and she lost it right in front of her eyes. It's a sad story with no conclusive ending, it's supposed to leave u thinking and as devastated as Ellie, its powerfully emotional, and tries to get out of all types of clichés by trying to focus the story on different aspects like morality, humanity, emotions, characters, their growth, consequences of the conflict between those characters and much more, it's not about a clear objective, it's about these things

It's risky and I think it shines

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first game almost once every year, and i liked the the second one even more.
The story of the second one is written in a lot less accessible way to most people.

You have to read between the lines and make your own conclusions by connecting the dots by using common knowledge and being aware to how realistic characters would react to many different types of hardships, whereas with the first game it was a more direct and literal narrative approach.

In the first game anything that the characters thought and/or felt was easily noticeable and was layed out right in front of you.
There's nothing wrong with that kind of story telling at all. But it is much more of a challenge, both for the writers and the players, to have a story told in a more complex and nuanced manner when it comes to the development of the characters.

Unfortunately most people weren't able to accept that a story that didn't turn out to be the one THEY wanted it to be, could still be just as good of a story at the end. And the ones who were able to accept it and still didn't like it probably do actually have valid reasons for it. Unfortunately those people are rare and their legitimate criticisms have been lost in a sea of ignorance due to the fact that the majority blindly closed themselves off from giving the game any chance whatsoever months before the game was even released.
All the people i've heard saying they hated the game also had the game spoiled for them through leaks.

Very unfortunate if you ask me since i firmly believe they've robbed themselves of an experience that could've possibly been a much better one than with the first game.

Because it sure as hell was for me.

    Did joel deserve better?
    Yes and no
For us as the player he surely did because of the connection we had with him from the first game.
In the grand scheme of things, he got what he deserved if you look at it from any other perspective outside of our own.

And to the people who say that joel did deserve a more respectful way to die in an absolute literal sense.
I want you to consider this.
If joel had died in an act of heroism as most people wish he would have, would you have gotten as angry as you did now?
    No you wouldn't.
Abby didn't just kill joel, he put him down as if he was a rabid dog.
And it truly sucked...and it made us absolutely furious with abby.
But that's the point. The player's hatred is what fuels our motivation to avenge him. That is good story telling. Period. But this doesn't mean this was a story about revenge. Because it absolutely was not. More on that later. And the people who say that joel introducing himself to strangers is uncharacteristic of him, maybe you should pay a little more attention to the actual dialog. It wasn't joel who initially introduced himself to abby's group. It was tommy. And no i'm not talking about the scene where he got shot in the leg. Before that when abby, joel and tommy were escaping from the horde, right before they got onto the horses, tommy introduced himself and joel to abby by name. Not joel. This was done in an effort to calm abby down as she was visibly distressed which was a liability. After finding out who tommy and joel were, abby lured them to her groups hideout. Now, as for people calling this a revenge story and saying that there's no real dilemma present in the narrative, think again.
There might not be a moral dilemma present like in the first game, but there is an emotional one.
And is drives the entire narrative of the game.
Some might think that this emotional dilemma is ellie's thirst for vengeance, but that's not the one.
I'm talking about the dilemma of forgiving an atrocious act committed by someone.
And yet again, if you're thinking i'm referring to ellie forgiving abby, you'd be wrong once more.
Because ellie never forgave abby, even at the end.
    No, instead she forgave joel.
Which she wasn't able to do before the very ending of the game.
This is why we get to see the last conversation ellie and joel had where ellie stated that she didn't know if she would ever be able to forgive joel, but she would like to try.
Now because of this ellie also carries an immense amount of guilt with her since the last thing she told joel was that she didn't know if she could ever forgive him. This guilt fuels her inability to forgive joel, which in turn fuels her guilt, and so on and so on...
The tragedy of this all is the fact ellie didnt see what we saw when during her last conversation with joel. Because after she left, joel was visably relieved. That's the tragedy.
Joel was contempt with the way things were, while ellie feels guilt because she think she let joel die thinking that she hated him.

People say the writing is lazy? I say everyone else is too lazy to attempt to actually understand the writing. And for what reason?
Because their favorite character was killed off. Nothing more nothing less.

The first half of the game is okay, but the second half is stupid, I won't spoil but they force us to play like 10 hours as a character that no one gives a **** about and I would say that's the worse part of the story. Now if you completly ignore the storyline and just focus on the gameplay, the game is really good on that point, its like the first game but 5 times better and the amazing amount of little details shows how much love has been put on this game. I just wish the storyline would not be garbage. Hey but who knows? Maybe Naughty Dog can still redeem themselves with a dlc? Or even a better version of factions multiplayer from the first game...

Oh yeah I almost forgot to mention how naughty dog lied to us in the trailers, if you expect the game to be like we see it in the trailers then you will be disappointed... Just know that Joel is not gonna have as a important role in the game as they made us think in the trailers.
