This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredible visuals and music can't make up for a complete lack of skill in writing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a good story that I believe was told badly. This game genuinely has parts of the story that I enjoyed, but I feel goes too far in delivering its themes and messages to me. I don't mind the fact that Joel being murdered due to the consequences of his actions in a previous game and then being forced to play as the murderer to see a different perspective, but the way it happened and the order of events didn't work with me. I also found the ending boss fight with Abby and Ellie to be wholly unnecessary and gratuitous in its efforts to hammer in its theme of forgiveness. Expand

First and foremost I respect the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters Ellie is one of my favourite video game characters of all time. I held that character deeply and wanted to be just like the character when I played the first last of us. I felt broken after experiencing what happened and it haunts my every waking moment and I’m traumatised, I’m nearly brought to tears every time I think about it and when a beloved character was so disrespected and taken out in a brutal manner, a big part of me died inside. I’ve been playing video games ever since I could hold a controller and love story telling, but I think this game has ruined both for me. Like I couldn’t continue on in the game I don’t think I’ll be able to continue on playing video games, it breaks my heart that the person I wanted to be back in 2013 when this game came out was taken away I don’t think I’m myself anymore. The graphics and gameplay is amazing but minus points for making me kill dogs. Expand

It seems the people who rate it above 7/10 can actually articulate why they have given it the score they have. The negative reviews just seem inaccurate, missing key points in the game that counter there own arguments. Or are just so in love with Joel they can’t move past his death. It’s a meta game, I hated what the leaks said, I also hated the game for the first 10 hours. Once I reflected on what happens, and how it happened. I love what they did. It’s not perfect, but rarely does a game come along that will burrow this deep under your skin. For good and bad reason. The game is a 9/10 for me, but given the huge amount of 0/10 by salty “fans” I’m giving it a 10 to try and balance it out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am going to go through all aspects of the game, and give my honest opinions on the game as a whole.

Graphics: stunning, beautiful, the water, the grass everything was just gorgeous. The game will look phenomenal on the ps5.

Combat: their were a lot of moments where I felt the tension, where I died and had to approach the situation differently. Abby and Ellie are two different play types, Ellie is more ranged and stealth, while Abby is much more offensive and melee. They were different enough to create a bit of variety in the game-play. My biggest complaint is the enemy types. You have all the zombies from the first game, Clickers, Runners, Bloaters, and Stalkers. There is a new one called the Shambler that is a mix of bloater and runner. The only other enemies are people and dogs. There was not enough types to make the game feel different, it was more running into the same thing after about a couple hours.

Abby: The character that has received a lot of controversy. First thing, she is not trans, that was misleading on the leaker's part. The game explains her physique by saying she trained a lot, which too me is skeptical cause we are in an apocalypse. We don't have the resources for that kind of stuff. She is introduced poorly, she is brought in as the villain of the game, so for about 15-18 hours I saw her as the villain. She did kill Joel, brutally, and it ruined my first impression of the character. As I played her my opinion only changed slightly, but that was due to interactions with Yara and Lev. All her friends didn't make me think she was a good, kind, caring person, since in the end her friends are killers too. Lev and Yara brought a better side to her, but it was more like 'oh she fells guilt' but by the time you actually get to this you begin to get tired of her. I think she should have had her own game, not be shoved in as a replacement for Ellie and Joel. You could play the game, not play Abby's, part and nothing would change.

Ellie: Who cares if she gay, its Ellie, she can be as gay as she wants. Ellie felt over dramatized to me, like she would not admit or talk about things that would bother her, and it was frustrating. True, she did go through a lot and is now on a revenge quest. But Ellie just felt disconnected from the other characters at times. Yes her and Dina were cute, but only for an hour before the revenge took Ellie and made her distant from Dina. And for some odd reason when Ellie killed some characters she acted like she has never done that before, like it was her first time. Trust me it wasn't. I get the PTSD of Joel's death, but it felt like Ellie would at times be fine with being a badass, but then would feel instant regret. It wasn't until the ending did I feel she actually got anywhere as a character. Yes she did let Abby go, which meant she was trying to let her revenge go. I enjoyed Ellie more in the flashbacks between her and Joel then i did in the main game. Her killing of Mel was extreme, but what would have made it work more was if for a moment she saw Dina, that would warrant the reaction she had. Overall she felt like a forced drama point, and you didn't even get to play her for the whole game so you couldn't watch her arc from beginning to end.

Side characters: Jesse was cool and loved having him (then they killed him), Dina wasn't bad but got better as the game went on, Owen was also interesting (till they for some reason forced a **** scene between him and Abby, what are we 12?), Mel was sweet and I could understand her (till they killed her) , Manny was hilarious and they killed him, Nora was like a protective friend (also dead), Yara was an amazing big sister (also dead), and Lev was just a character I wished we could have explored more. Btw Lev is the true trans and let him live out his life as he pleases. I would love to have a spin off about Lev and what he goes through.

Story: I get the 'revenge is a horrible cycle thing' but the game is forcing you to feel bad for characters. You play as Ellie, killing these people that are actively trying to kill you, and everything is fine. Your enjoying the game. Then you play as Abby, and the game proceeds to show the people you killed, and how good they are, how sweet the dogs are, how they aren't so bad. The game wants you to feel bad. But frankly, I didn't care, because as a player they are the 'villains'. As for the ending, I get it, but I don't feel anything worthwhile out of it. I don't feel shocked, moved, stunned, or sad. I pretty much said "OK, was that it?" The story isn't some interwoven psychological brain teezer. This game is a sequel, but its not the best sequel. I get that characters die in such a harsh world, but to start the player off with that just ruins the players experience, it takes the action away from them and forced them to be a bystander while they watch characters drop like flies. If you like the game, good for you, I wouldn't recommend it without some caution.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The games itself, in regards to mechanics, mood, music etc, was amazing. some of the best stealth combat ive ever experienced and the upgrades system was really great. Graphics speak for themselves; they were beyond beautiful and the small details blew me away (dust particles, light spills, ai interactions...) The game also did an amazing job of making me feel on edge at some points. HOWEVER, i feel the greatest downfall lies in the actual story. with the original last of us, I really felt a connection to the characters and the story made sense to me. Even in the left behind DLC, I really fell in love with it. In part two, i felt none of that. I did not connect with the characters in the same way and the demise of joel was extremely undeserving, despite whatever hes done. Abby is just as guilty as Joel in many things. Im not upset Joel died, i actually expected it. Its the manner it happened: him easily giving Tommy and his name to complete strangers (whether or not he knew their intentions, this is not something the Joel we know wouldve done. He was always overly cautious of strangers. you would think he would continue to be cautious especially knowing hes wronged alot of people), the spitting on his dead body and then the attempt to make players understand and like abby. The game bounces from place to place frequently and the only redeeming point in the story for me was in the Joel flashbacks, especially the one with the museum. seeing Ellie and Joel interact in that way was exactly the experience I was looking for when jumping into the continuation of their story. My absolute least favorite portion was the TEN HOURS you play as Joels killer, Abby. it felt redundant and, as hard as the game tried, I never felt an ounce of sympathy and remorse for her. Just constantly found myself annoyed and rushing through this portion. playing catch with a dog or being nice to SCARS after killing dozens is not redeamable qualities for someone that killed the person that made the game what it was. I read a comment on youtube that said, "you wouldnt kill Nathan Drake in the first hour of any of the uncharted games". In the end, Ellie doesnt even get the revenge she had fought so hard to get. She flashes to a memory of her and joel the night of her kiss with Dina. They plan on attempting to repair their relationship. and this make her let abby go?? as she has her drowning, on the brink of death she goes, "oh yeah. nevermind." after murdering and rampging through so many different groups and areas, she just.... lets the whole thing go. this felt not only out of character for Ellie, but a slap in the face to both fans and the characters. I feel like this wouldve motivated her further, seeing joels face and the possibility of them getting back to where they were. the game couldve ended countless times: at the farmhouse the first time with Dina, At the theatre When Playing as Abby or even when Ellie is walking around with jj, Exploring their new home. Those all would have been more efficient, i feel, than what they went for. In the end, I still love the last of us as a franchise and would still play whatever they put out next in this story, if they ever do. Expand

Melee combat is SO broken you can't dodge attacks and when you attack they block 90% of the time. And you don't put your arm around character's anymore when you're both using the same cover, in fact it pushes you away from cover and often gets you spotted. They rush everything in this game (even though it's long. I beat it in about 28-30 hours and it was a chore)and it doesn't carry any emotion like in the first one, they just go for shock value at the cost of character development. And don't even get me started on how broken the fight against Ellie in the theater is. It feels like they went " the first game was a masterpiece, how can we take that world and its character's and ruin it in every way just to piss off everyone who loves it". I avoided the trailers and reviews and everything else about this game so I could experience it for myself in all its glory, except it has none.
