This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this is the lowest score I've ever given a video game. I'm also against "review bombing" which I originally thought this game was a victim of, then I played the game.

It literally feels like the story writers wanted to **** on their fans as hard as possible. (Major spoilers ahead) not only do they kill Joel in the beginning (something I accepted and moved on from) but they force you to play as Joels killer (a boring ass character who was JUST introduced that I couldn't care less about) FOR HALF THE GAME. Blows my mind that the decision to play as NEITHER Joel or Ellie for HALF the game went through. I'm just so baffled that I'm being forced to play as a character I couldn't care less about. A game that could've been incredible just absolutely BRUTALIZED by a dog**** story and CLEAR anti-male influence. You can call me sexist/bigot all you want but its CLEAR that "strong woman narrative" was shoved down the devs throats. Your metacritic score is deserved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I pre-ordered the game and I just finished it yesterday. BAD story! Political agenda RUINED this game. Cliché out of context ending.
Abby's character was not built in a way that will make the player understand her motives.
Joel and Tommy seemed like less smart characters compared to their characters in TLOS when they trusted a random group of people to be locked in a house with them in this cruel world that the first game managed to portray.

Visuals, environment design, and music are outstanding, and if you get the chance to play it on PS5, the 60fps makes this game a technical marvel to rival Demon’s Souls Remake. The story and characters are where things get dicey. Overall, it’s great. But once the perspective shifted to Abby, I started noticing things I didn’t like. Many scenes featuring Abby and her friends made me actively dislike them, and it wasn’t until two new characters joined Abby that I began to see her as more than the gaming community’s punching bag. The rest of the story, however, was breathtaking, going in a direction I’ve never seen in a video game. As an added bonus, the LGBTIQ+ representation is superb, and the accessibility options make this game one of the most disabled friendly games ever made. Bravo Naughty Dog.
In summary, The Last Of Us Part II is not as good as critics say it is, but nowhere near as bad as angry fans want it to be.

Review bombs aside, I am torn on how I feel about TLOU2. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. To wit, most of the complaints about an agenda are ultimately unfounded, but that only means that the game isn't 'trash', but I am struggling to say that it's great.

I really enjoyed my time with TLOU2 while also disliking it at the same time, but not to the point where I would call it a bad game. On the one hand, as with its predecessor, Naughty Dog has made a solid stealth action game and proven that it can make games where weapons sound and feel powerful unlike with its other globetrotting action franchise (that, for the record, I despise - all four of 'em). On the other hand, it is absolutely enslaved by the story it wants to tell and the game suffers for it despite much of its execution being really well done.

Like my opinion, TLOU2 seems ultimately divided on what it wants to be. As a game, it is solid fare, but brings absolutely nothing new to the table and doesn't further the genre one bit. However, its production values are through the roof and if you have any appreciation for 3D artistry, it is found here in droves. Every little detail is accounted for and in a delightfully-smooth way. I spent much of my time simply admiring the environments, knowing just how much work went into each prop, character, and piece of debris, let alone gawking at the tremendous achievements in lighting. Yet despite all that, you're still scavenging for crafting items, sneaking around boxes, desks, crates, or whatever, and stabbing or choking people out. Unfortunately, due to the story TLOU2 wants to tell, you spend more time fighting people than zeds and a lot of the tension and suspense that the original title excelled at providing (courtesy of no-longer-at-Naughty-Dog Bruce Straley) is missing as TLOU2 becomes a standard shooter. It's very clear when danger is approaching as you'll pull out a weapon. It's very clear when you've killed everyone because the music stops and the character tells you so. It is very clear when you are expected to simply be exploring because it's safe to do so. Where traversal of the environment in the original was often clever and thrilling, here it's simply going from one arena to another and it just. Doesn't. Stop. For a game that brings so little to the table in terms of gameplay, to stretch what little there is over several tens of hours became absolutely mind-numbing, especially when the AI is so extremely exploitable. The game excels, as expected, when you are traversing zed-infested areas because they are relentless when alerted, but these are relatively few and far between. Most of the time, you'll be facing humans and they will file at you one by one, rendering most of the cat-and-mouse game completely moot. I often found myself going through empty areas because I simply killed everyone in one corner.

It's the other half of the game's identity - the one in which it pretends to be a film - that holds the game hostage. While it has been accused of having an agenda, I have to say that people with agendas tend to be more overt about it. Instead, TLOU2 suffers from an obsessive need to be understated and subtle. It's really not about furthering politics on any level (it's really not that deep), but hopelessly devoted to the "craft" of the storytelling. To its credit, it doesn't feel the need to bash you over the head and say "look at what we're doing," and quite often, the execution of key elements in the story are expertly done. It's the stuff surrounding it that really drags things out and the best way I can describe it is like a terrific novel that could be made better if you ripped about 200 pages out of it without losing a thing. Because of the obsession to give you as little explicit material as possible, you spend most of your time simply slogging through drip-fed revelations when much of the game could actually be cut out. If an entire third of your story is simply travelling from one point to another (and remember, the gameplay doesn't evolve at all), then most of it can be cut. As a result, the story isn't bad, but it's entirely too drawn out and the game itself is ultimately too damn long because of it.

Ultimately, it comes down to a game that, on the whole, is fantastic, but could use a tremendous amount of improvement. If gameplay evolved over its 30-40 hours of runtime, perhaps it would have been more compelling. If much of the fluff and uneventful content was removed, perhaps it would have been more thrilling. The story can be poked several times for its weaknesses, but it could also be held up several times for its strengths. Some characters have wildly inconsistent motivations or logic, yet those same characters can have extremely strong foundations and compulsions as well. It's rather inconsistent, and that's the rub.

TL:DR - The Last of Us 2 soars high with absolute beautiful fidelity while simultaneously falling far from grace with poor story writing and structure and coupled with dated gameplay mechanics.

Graphics: TLOU's greatest strength is its visuals. Stunning, vibrant detail can be seen through most of the game, only lacking occasionally on a few character models and background foliage. It is almost impossible not to get lost in a gaze with every cutscene. The environment does an excellent job capturing the feel of an apocalyptic world.

Story: Unfortunately for TLOU2, it doesn't even hold a candle to its predecessor. Where the TLOU1 was focused on a powerful, well driven story about the zombie apocalypse, TLOU2 steers clear of that in favor of a forced revenge plot. Character development is strong in some places while completely failing to address it in others. The story itself bounces constantly between uninteresting characters and different points in time, creating a jarring, predictable, and disappointing storytelling experience.

Gameplay: TLOU2 doesn't stray too far from the TLOU formula. Though some additions were made, everything about the game feels comfortably familiar, yet boring in most cases.

Audio: Another aspect that seems to be equally comparable to the first in the series. Sound effects do their job, but don't bring anything to the table as far as robust or immersive.

    Final Score: 3/10

Sidenote: There is absolutely nothing in my review in regards to the controversy. This is as unbiased a review as it can get. Astounding graphics and a brand name from a company are not enough to carry a game to success. The original The Last of Us was predominantly successful due to its phenomenal story, which is completely mismanaged here. One could argue that a game does not need a good story, but then all you're left with is generic and obsolete gameplay that cannot hold this world up.

This is a game about blind hatred and what it leads to.

The plot shows us a picture where Ellie creeps down the moral ladder as fast as she can. What happened to Joel drove her so crazy that she no longer knows herself that she is no better than a killer. Watching what was happening, I had only one thought in my head: “Enough, stop, this violence has already crossed all borders and will

The gameplay is gorgeous too. High-tech stealth action, the gameplay of which is balanced for maximum complexity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let start with the positives. Props to the animation and art team for doing a great job enhancing the game to groundbreaking quality. The rope physics are amazing. Second, gameplay is a definite step-up from the last game but not by much. I love the little map you pull out. I also like that dogs can sniff you out and that enemies are more human. It's way more brutal, and the gore porn would've been justified if empathy was a central theme, but it isn't. Still, it's impressive that you can choose how you want to torture/kill your enemies. Music really had its moments during Joel and Ellie flashbacks. Otherwise, it's forgettable.
Now for bad: the plot and message of revenge wasn't bad; they just really should've executed it better. I don't mind if characters die; as long as they get deserving deaths that respect their legacy, it can be a great thing. But no, the dev had to spit on Joel (which he actually does in the game) by making him dumb for plot convenience, torturing him slow in front of his brother and daughter, and while she screams for it to stop, kill him, and let Ellie and Tommy live. This is within the first 2 hours of the game. I don't know what else could be as malicious to fans as that. And who cares about the cure anymore; let's make it a revenge story that isn't satisfying. Forgive the killer who slow tortured your dad in front of you. it's not that the revenge trope is bad. This game just fails at it. You're supposed to empathize with Abby but she's not worth the forgiveness. Oh you feel bad about two kids you left behind? Tell that to the thousands of orphans you've made from killing Scars. Tell that to a father you slowly tortured and killed in front of his daughter and brother. Oh you gave Ellie a chance and she wasted it? You had a chance and wasted it. At least Joel made it quick for your dad, a single shot to the head. You decide to take it so much further, even after he saves your life. She kills without thinking and gets her friends killed and/or traumatized. Not to mention, she had sex with her friend's husband who is pregnant with their child. Let's also not forget the game forces you to play this ungrateful brat for the last half and forces you to fight Ellie. I still wish she died but no, the game doesn't let you kill her and here's the best part: I feel just as much animosity toward Ellie. Wtf happened to her character from the first game? She hates violence; she's empathetic; she was the light in the darkness for me AND Joel. Now, she's a sociopathic monster. She's like "oh god, I tortured someone!" when first, you would've never done that and second, you literally are committing a genocide along the way. Does WOLF soldier #237's life matter? Y'know, the one you set on fire? Or maybe the one you shot the leg off of who screamed until they bled out and died? This violence is bad agenda just doesn't work in this world. If you really wanted me to feel bad for the people I'm killing, don't force me to kill them! It's not effective to be all like "oh you took all these lives. You're the monster," when the game didn't give me a choice.
The political agenda is also just so pandering. As a bisexual female myself, I love that Ellie is lesbian and it felt natural in the DLC. I just wish they made her and Dina that natural. Their chemistry is a one night stand. Wasn't Dina really flirty? Why would she suddenly want to settle? Because Ellie needs a gf for the plot. And not only is she unrelatable, but she's an idiot too. Don't have sex without protection. If you do, expect you'll get pregnant and don't come along on a journey. Now, she's a dead weight, and there's also some stupid message about "pregnant women can fight too" with Dina and Mel. There's a reason pregnant women aren't allowed to fight: it's so idiots like these two won't hurt their baby. They're trying to be strong and independent, but you're just being irresponsible. Let's also not forget the tragic story of all the male characters killed off for "plot convenience" AKA make the world women-only: Joel, Manny, Owen, but the worst was definitely Jesse. He knocked up Dina, and they kill him without any mourning. It just feels like "No strings attached now! You can be the father Ellie!" That really soured the farm part for me, although it was really cute. And I liked Jesse a lot. He had better sense than anybody and was merely a victim of a love triangle with two stupid people. The exact situation can be applied to Yara's death too. Congratz, you have a pet Lev, Abby. Your dream came true! As a bisexual female, the only LGBTQ+ representation I will take is Lev. All the other female leads are either killing machines and/or irresponsible biggots.

The only reason my rating is so high is because artists, animators, and gameplay designers obviously put their all into it. They shouldn't be discounted because the story was so god-awfully done. Good job guys, and writers, the LGBTQ+ community isn't that easy to suck up to.

The game tries to force the player to empathize with characters without any charisma, making you play with a character that is already hateful since the beginning of the game, not to mention the horrible, disappointing and meaningless end of the game.
Which was to be expected since a good part of the team that produced the first one, and even the director and one of the creators did not return to the sequel.
That all added up, plus the swindle of Nauthy Dog, who has been cheating the games with interviews, and fake trailers, in which they replaced Joel of the past, and Jesse for the Skin of Joel of the present, leading fans to believe that the character would accompany Ellie on her journey, which does not happen in the final version.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
