I did not enjoy playing this game. And I don't think I'll ever play another Naughty Dog game again.

You'd think naughty dog would've learned a lesson from GoT's final season on how to not piss off your audience but dear reader your probably much better off loading up the original game and pretending it's an only child . Last of us 2 is filled to the brim with lovely visuals

Last of us 2 is filled to the brim with lovely visuals ,cutting gameplay and good music. A shame it doesn't take away from the fact that going through the story puts you in the shoes of a loathed character your supposed to sympathize with , who mere moments before we learn of her story had very brutally dispatched the father of our beloved father daughter duo of the first game because an NPC of the first game was suddenly given a name, and a family.

I guess the take away from this was supposed to be those seeing revenge should dig two graves or something, but it was so poorly executed each death along our quest to tear Abby a new one just made me salivate for her blood even more. And we didn't even get that.

Yes we are supposed to to go , oh, well I guess we're supposed to forgive this. You know it did flash me back to another game with a fantastic story were an older man bonds with a young girl through a zombie apocalypse. I wonder if father figures like Lee and Joel go to the same heaven. Lee would be like : I died heroically saving my charge , how did you die? And then Joel will be like : I died because Naughty Dog needed a throwaway character to start off on the most unfulfilling revenge plot line that was ever written in gaming history. And then Lee would be like : That's rough buddy.

Anyway TLDR, Unfulfilling unsatisfying and rage inducing plot, unsatisfying flat characters, beloved characters making stupid choices.... just no. Save your money, watch a lets play.

Well, I don't know why so many people over here crying about the plot, it's great - maybe little cheese at times. But game is a master peace and not many developers do this says what NaughtyDog can. Every game is always a huge step forward. Not another : Assassin, Call of duty , gears gears , halo etc.
Graphics / gameplay / story is great

    Think about it. Definitely 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TO EVERYONE LOOKING AT ALL THESE ZEROES THINKING THIS IS A HATE MOB - It is absolutely not. It is honestly people, like myself included, who quite frankly feel like they've been spat on by the writers, the developers and the game itself. Whilst I won't justify the zeroes, what I WILL justify is why this game at the very most deserves a five (even though I only want to give this a four). Why? Because the game looks beautiful and although the gameplay is a little dated and the extra mechanics feel a little forced, it's still fun to play. The rest is down to the story, and since this is a heavily story-driven game, let me tell you: it does not work. Not in the slighest.

To start with, literally everything that happens in this game hinges off Abby's decisions. Stemming all the way from the first game where she is the one who suggests it's the right call to just do the operation on Ellie anyway without allowing Joel any input whatsoever whilst he is still recovering or letting Ellie know what's going to happen, which is what then causes Joel to go in and kill Abby's father. Then there's also an infamous scene with her killing Joel. She has absolutely zero remorse for what happens. She doesn't even stop to think for a moment to consider the fact that she actually would be dead without Joel at one point either, she's just this vessel of hatred. And this literally has nothing whatsoever to do with anything LGBTQ+, it is - as plainly as I can put it - a badly written character doing stupid things, watching other people die who went out of their way to help her cause and she have not any kind of reflection on it at all.

This decision is what causes Ellie to then go out of her way to do horrible things, plenty of which is out of character for her and which even pissed me off because she was doing such stupid stuff, but all because Abby didn't like a certain character. Who, again, did what he did because he wanted Ellie alive and was the only person in that building in the first game who saw her as a human life. But then the game very blatantly starts to emotionally manipulate you: Ellie does all these horrible things, like killing dogs and a pregnant women (yes! how horrible!) because they're all she comes up against. Abby? Abby only ever pets dogs and has to fight against some weird cultish group of hateful people (I still can't fully remember what their motivations were but they were like the Hunters in the first). Notice how Ellie is only ever the one being forced into antagonistic situations whilst Abby is forced into the role of the good girl? There's no fight between either/or with the two, Ellie just fights innocent people and Abby just fights bad people. To me, that is the epitome of emotional manipulation. But it gets worse.

The ending itself is what for me, totally falls flat on its face. EVEN IF you are able to justify Abby's actions at the start, whilst saying Joel had it coming, sure, fine, but what happens with Abby? Nothing. And I hear people even going "but Ellie didn't want to become Abby so that's why she didn't do what she did" and quite frankly that excuse is an utter load of tripe. You don't force Ellie to do what she did and THEN have her decide to take the moral ground just to spare a character. That is pathetic storytelling. If you're going to do an anti-revenge story like that, EVERY main character who exacts revenge needs to be punished for it. It seems they only ever wanted to punish Ellie for even thinking about exacting revenge, okay, fine. Abby, on the other hand? There's zero sense of remorse. Zero thought for the fact her own actions were literally what caused EVERYTHING in this game to happen. Zero compassion for Joel saving her life. It's poor. If you want to do a good anti-revenge story you should look at the Red Dead Redemption story, because even that allows you that sweet revenge whilst also then having the consequences catch up and it NOT feel like you've just had someone spit on your face and go "you're not allowed to retaliate to that because you're evil!"

It's terribly written. Its own moral trips up on its own defence of a foolish, ignorant, spiteful character who I couldn't even force myself to like even just with her own moments in the game. And I'm not someone who has anything whatsoever against anything LGBTQ+ which is what quite a few of these review bombers here are for, but the character they had as the face of that agenda is just a **** person. There's no other words for it.

I'm done with Naughty Dog. Druckmann himself said that he had an agenda to push in this. Well there you are, Druckmann... and funnily enough you've actually pissed off quite a large chunk of that group of people you were fighting to represent (I make no joke of this, ask most of those people who have actually played and finished this game). But all those sweet brownie points will get you a free cookie now.

I struggled to understand their thinking as some of the decisions that were made were so stupid and unsatisfying to watch. The balance between going stealthy and blasting in the front door is totally up to the player; you can go either way in almost all situations. The looting system is, in my opinion, still great, but I do think that even in the harder difficulties, finding items should be a little more rewarding. Graphics are awesome and really show the capabilities of today's technology. Especially the transition between cutscene and gameplay and vice versa is just barely noticable in some cases, and is the best in any other game I played on the PS4. Furthermore, there are many small details put in the game that will be missed by a lot of players on the first playthrough, and I applaud the game developers at Naughty Dog for putting in the effort to do so!

My praise for this game goes far but this is however not a 10/10 game, which is mostly due to the story. Decisions in the narrative and storyline seem random and I think the story could have more impact if the order of events was changed. I found an analogy somewhere that describes how I feel about the storyline: "Naughty Dog put each event in the game on a playing card, put them in a deck of cards, shuffled the deck a few times, and then went with whatever order the events ended up in". Other choices in especially the ending of the game, makes a lot of the story so far feel pointless.

Even though I think Part 2 could have been a lot better, I still think there is a lot more to tell in another Part 3. Especially in Ellie's world, I feel there is a lot more to tell. I didn't feel for the other characters as much as I did in the first game. However, it is still an 8 out of 10 or me.

This is a great game. But I can somewhat see the problem people have with it, aside from the childish trolling reviews.

    The mental transition from:

    A) hating a major character (and not wanting to be manipulated by the game)

    to

    B) accepting that you understand (not like) the character's motivation while seeing that (all) the characters – being blinded by hatred – just can’t act otherwise. And therefore the game doesn't give you the option to change their actions.

... that’s a highly risky way to tell a story. Especially with such beloved characters. But it's also a real sign of creative integrity and of a bold vision.

If the player can’t take this step of acceptance (a major theme of the game itself), the game fails. It will take you out of the immersion–which is so important to appreciate the game. That's why the story leak was a huge problem. The game needs context and the player needs to let the plot – and his own anger – sink in. It's a brilliant mechanism that mirrors the events of the game on a meta-level.

The game knows that the player is in a moral dilemma. And – if you let the masterful crafted world and characters sink in – it takes you on a cathartic trip (which doesn’t work if you are not willing to accept the story).

I applaud Naughty Dog for the brave decision to go with this. I loved how they got me to the point, where I went with the emotions of the characters EVEN knowing that this meant acting against my personal choices (that derived from my knowledge of the story as an external viewer). And that I, therefore, routed for the catharsis of all the protagonists.

Risky but (therefore) great storytelling, if you are willing to accept what the game is doing.
