This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After a 23 1/2 hour first playthrough yesterday, I’ve just started my second. Part II improves on The Last of Us in every possible way; Gameplay, Visuals, Music, AI, Worldbuilding. Acting, like the first game, was phenomenal and the new characters are mostly great. The polarising story might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but having dual-protagonists (especially ones being pitted as each other’s enemies) allows for something more fleshed out and is something I’ve never seen. The end, which others have described as unsatisfying, stays true to reality and the world that’s been created here. Not every story needs a happy ending. I’m a man, and there were some tears and had my mouth agape for most of the end portions.

The only downside to this title is that it can sometimes be monotonous, ie gameplay, that have carried over from its predecessor.

    Must buy for PS4 owners

After Joel died i just wanted to stop playing. What i loved is the different emotions i had towards Ellie and Abbey.I loved the way the game made me feel hatred towards one character only to change my opinion throughout the game.I felt sorry for Ellie at the start she basically destroys every emotional attachment she had towards anyone by the end of the game and i found myself very satisfied with the ending,I found some characters bland and i would like to of seen more of Tommy,I loved this game I played it over three days,I couldn't wait to finish it,By far the best ps4 game i've played since the Last Of Us was released.Good tale of two people seeking revenge and the consequences and innocent lives that it destroys for what? The first games a story of survival, building new relationships from tragic loss ,Last Of us 2 a story of vengeance portraying how Ellie has transformed into a emotionless killing machine with no lack of empathy for anyone.two very different games.I loved it.Loved the graphics they could of added more new enemies. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, I understand why people hate this game and the critics love it. The story of this game is insanely depressing. I have never been so depressed from a video game like this before and I guess that's what naughty dog was going at. The story feel very much like those movies that win Oscars but no one ever watched. It has that European style of story telling, and many people don't like that, and I get it. I personally feel the story was done well for the most part. Unfortunately, Joel died too early with no explanations, making you wait for 15 hours and well into half of the game. They start Abby's story with a bad taste in your mouth with the way she killed Joel and that leave so little to emphasize with her through the game. However, her bond with Yara and Lev is great. It makes her character much like Joel, someone who did bad things but through her connection with kids and ultimately saving them, she finds peace with the death of her father, something that revenge didn't do for her. In a way Lev is Ellie and Abby is Joel. Ellie has do decide whether she can end the revenge cycle and choose the outcome for her self and not for Joel. There are also many foreshadowing scattered throughout the game. Ultimately, this game is a survivor horror through and through. The gameplay is satisfying in moment to moment combat, but the animation do get repetitive torwards the end because of how lengthy this game is. It took me 38 hours to beat it. This game also has great level design and every place feels organic. The visuals again look amazing and the the music is on par with the first game. The voice acting here is top notch with some of the best side characters. Overall this is a great game. It aims high and tries to go big, and perhaps it does to many things at once. The first game did great because it was simple but yet so effective in it's story telling. If the first game was a masterpiece, this is close to that. Hopefully you will give it a shot. Expand

    Gameplay

The game is far from perfect, even story wise, but first let's see the technical aspects. The gameplay is virtually unchanged from the first part of the game. That's a 7 year old title, which wasn't exactly ground breaking even then. I haven't seen a QTE in a game for a long time,

However there are improvements to the gameplay, but mostly just streamlining. I could play this more effectively than the first one, the stealth seems more smooth and predictable. And in most encounters you can actually choose if you take down all enemies or stealth through, both approaches are effective.

The gameplay doesn't get boring, because it is broken up by cutscenes, and slower segments of exploration. And on top of that the game switches between multiple playable characters that have slightly different abilities. There are also occasional flashback sequences.

What I found most annoying is the constant shortage of resources. And it's not the availability of resources in the environment, but the fact that you can't stock up on things. Your ammo carrying capacity is limited to 6-10 bullets / weapon. That is ridiculously low. And you can only carry 3 of each crafting material, when many of the materials are shared between multiple craftable items.

The gameplay is solid even if a bit disappointing in terms of there being no new mechanics at all. The combat difficulty setting is quite meaningless, as the hardest part of the game is when you fight monsters that instakill you. And there is no difference in that whether you play on hardest or easiest. So the game is not "journo easy" to say the least.

    The technical aspects

There are areas where the game made huge leaps. Namely character animations. This game has the best animations, facial and otherwise that I've seen in anything. It seems to me that they made the leap where people's muscles are actually simulated, I mean the body parts are not rigid, but change their shape depending on movements and actions, as the muscles contract and relax. I have not seen that in any other game to date.

The graphics is up there with the best, but not actually the best. I think in terms of characters Detroit Become Human still has it beat, and in terms of the environment Ghost Recon Breakpoint is superior. But this one is not far behind, and of course this is great in both the environment and the characters, so not just a one trick pony like those games.

    The Story

Oh this is the hard bit to judge without specifics. First thing first: I could not detect an ounce of SJW influence in the game, or feminist frequency for that matter. The writing is not suffering like in the case of XCOM Chimera Squad, the characters aren't quota mandated, or defined by their gender. There is no dunking on men, or proclaiming of female superiority or any trans sex for that matter.

There is nothing to fear unless you are disheartened by the mere inclusion of a strong female character. And strong in this case means physically strong.

The main focal point of the story is trying to humanize the enemy. Which funny enough I was contemplating in my review of the first Last of Us, that the bad guys are always portrayed as psychopaths or sociopaths in these stories and it made no sense to me. Well that changes here and now. As we see the story playing both sides. In fact in my case, and I may be alone in this, the roles were completely reversed. I was actually rooting for the supposed anti-hero.

The first 20 hours of the game was pretty amazing, I enjoyed the hell out of it. But we should've left things as they were in Seattle. If the story stopped right after that I'd have named this game of the year. But no, they had to just keep dragging it on, and on, and on. This is a clear case where less would've been more.

Everything that happens after Seattle feels rushed, there are huge leaps in time and space, that make zero sense. It's as if they suddenly cancelled The Last of Us 3 and quickly slapped the key points of it's proposed story arc to the end of this game. I hated that bit, for being so depressive.
    Final thoughts

This was a roller coaster alright, unfortunately one that just slid off the tracks at the, instead of coming to a graceful stop at a station. That said however I wouldn't have missed the first 20 hours of the game for any reason.

I know this is advice that is impossible to keep, but you are better off quitting the game after Seattle and never finishing it. It would've been better for me for sure. I feel miserable now. I felt hopeful at that point. But the fact that I feel miserable is a kind of testament to the quality of writing. My subconscious cannot tell that these are fictional characters, and I feel awfully sorry for them, even though my conscious mind knows it's not real.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not gonna lie, when I completed The Last of Us back on PS3, never thought it was gonna have a sequel, like, what would it be the point or goal to achieve for Ellie and Joel? In my opinion, they destroyed the whole script with the ending in the first game so that's why I didn't expect a new game to be released.
Joel was given a mission which was to take care of Ellie and bring her to the Fireflies' camp so they could make a vaccine wit her blood. During their journey they go through a lot of terrible moments, losses and they struggle to survive in order to achieve the goal set for Marlene. Yes, Joel and Ellie make bonds with each other which is a crucial thing for the game. At the end, Joel's decission was the most important plot twist. He went to another direction to the one he was supposed to. He refuse to give Ellie to the fireflies because she would die, he was selfish, yeah. But nobody cared because people understood him, because I believe we all would probably do the same he did, he started seeing Ellie as his daughter and what he did was "right", Joel was a hero in our eyes.
But, does that make him a real heroe? In a videogame, probably, because it is so easy to be in the character's shoes. In real life, I bet if we took Joel's path we would be hated and Naughty Dog knows that. Just imagine, same situation as Joel and Ellie went through but applied in this pandemic situation that we are living in (COVID-19). How would you feel knowing that there is one person that has the cure for all this and at the end they just say "no, **** but I can't do this, I can't let this person die to save the humankind, it will be hard for me, those that stand on my way to stop me will be killed." Would you feel ok with their decission knowing that the world will continue with the virus and having in mind that this could have been completely stopped?
I know, one thing happens in a videogame and the other example is based on real life, but , that's what Naughty Dog was aiming to that in The Last of Us and The Last of Us part II, putting a real life context or sensitive situation in a videogame or at least, trying to make it more real-life like.
With all that said, I personally feel The Last of Us part II have brutality from the beggining to the end. One person going for revenge. Revenge people could actually attempt in real life if somebody else took their loved ones' life for personal and selfishness reasons, plus, the fact that the death mentioned could have saved the whole humanity if things were different, but they ain't. It is all about that, perspectives, no one is good or bad it all depends on the eyes of the beholder. I loved it from head to toe, it always makes you question yourself about the good and evil and beyond the meaning you give to every single action took in the game, it gives you the chance to experience it in different point of views. Was basically like going in a rollercoaster of emotions where you could not predict what was gonna be the next thing to happen. You started developing feelings with a character and next thing you know they are gone. I loved those up and downs.
I just wish they would have added more gameplay to explain what happened after Abby encountered Ellie in the theater. Probably they will bring a DLC, who knows?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If there was a 9.5 rating that’s what I would’ve rated it. A couple minor plot issues and an ending that felt like it dragged compared to the entire build up. One of the most impressively written narratives I’ve ever seen. I really can understand the people who aren’t too fond of this game, but giving it a 1/10 basically just outs yourself as not playing the game or giving it a chance. There’s plenty of good in this game even if you hate certain choices. Personally it worked so well for me, and I can’t wait to go back and replay it. I was shocked at my favorite parts of the game being Abby’s section. Laura Bailey puts in an absolutely incredible performance. This game is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling in gaming. Jumping from timeline to timeline, switching from Ellie to Abby, killing off the characters that it does...and executing them all so well is insane. There were a lot of areas where this game could’ve collapsed on itself but it manages to be a worthy successor. I truly think we’ll get a third game, too, and when we do - I hope Neil and Halle double down on not giving in to fan service. This game is incredible, and my only advice is at least give it a chance and play through the game before judging it. Because I loved this game. Expand

Still a brilliant game but not quite as strong as the first installment of the series. I began questioning who was more deserving of seeking vengeance. I understand though why so many people are angry with ND's story decisions
