Everything from the gameplay, to environment design, to acting and story are truly the best in the business, a masterclass for Naughty Dog again.

It's such a shame so many are criticizing this in such bad bad faith. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T "AGREE" WITH STORY CHOICES DOES NOT MAKE BAD WRITING. It's so clear since the release that the leaks (and the month afterwards) festered fans groupthink and confirmation bias into bombing a labor of love for thousands of people. No amount of context could ever change their opinion, which is such a shame.

Play this game. It's my favorite one of all time.

Main character development - I just don't feel em. They are not natural.

Awkward scenes - death of Joel as a father figure, sex scene of Abby - its like some damaged person worked on plot. Sorry for harsh words. But its like that.

Ending - It's like killing Bill, w/o killing Bill.

This game is absolute trash. The graphics are great and the gameplay is good, but what made the first one so great was the narrative and the story which this game fails hard. Save your money and just consider this bad fan fiction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man I just finished the game and had to make a Metacritic account to talk this through.

Graphics are beautiful, music is great, characters are complex... The damn story though.

In my 20+ years of gaming, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. The first 2 hours we had to swallow the hard pill that is Joel’s death, brutal and I feel unnecessary so early on in the game, senseless in the way it was done but I pressed on, accepting that this was the plot driver of the game and ready to get revenge as Ellie and actually happy to have Dina by my side. The first 10 hours of gameplay were ok, one of my favourite parts of the game actually was watching Ellie and Dina’s relationship develop as well as appreciating their dynamic much like Ellie and Joel’s in the first game.. however this doesn’t last long.

I appreciate Ellie’s thirst for revenge as the plot driver, I felt it was strong enough and although I struggled to enjoy playing some parts, I did want to rush to the Aquarium to **** up Abby so it was to my surprise when we don’t find her but then she turns up at the theatre, ****s up Tommy and kills Jesse?! Man I was ready for her to BURN, I had watched the interviews with NaughtyDog and thought I understood why this game was about hate... but oh no was I wrong. Gun pointed on Ellie and fade to black to some **** I have never been so mad at a video game before, NaughtyDog had me HATING this game with 15 hours still to play.

**** Abby and **** her arms. **** her backstory, her friends and any other associated **** I did not care one bit that her dad was the surgeon or that her arms are top dog in the WLF. I could’ve gotten over all of this if we only had to play with her for like an hour or so but half of the game.... HALF OF THE ****ING GAME PLAYING AS THE **** WHO KILLED JOEL, WHOSE ONLY PERSONALITY TRAIT IS ARM DAY?!?! Those 10 hours were the most painful to play, I genuinely did not enjoy one moment of it. If NaughtyDog wanted us to experience a new character and explore new storylines which tie into Ellie’s then they should’ve literally picked any other character. It feels like they asked us to play as David from the first game after everything he did to Ellie - violated is the word I’m searching for here.

Not only was the gameplay painful and unrelenting whilst playing as Abby but what felt worse was I had no emotional connection to her other than hate. I did not want her to live and was angered by every cut scene. I did like the introduction of the Scar kids though, Yana and Lev was it? They made the gameplay a little bit more bearable as I painfully waited for the words, SEATTLE DAY 3 to appear on my screen.

One bit I will admit was cool was going to the island, during the thunderstorm as the WLF attacked the Scars and being involved in some of the fighting. It felt deliciously dramatic as everything unfolded and was on fire... only to once again be let down by Yanas death followed by NaughtyDog forcing some uncharacteristic kind of sibling/paternal bond between Abby and the newly orphaned Lev. Let’s skip past some **** and talk about the theatre fight scene. It was cruel of Naughty Dog to make us play as Abby while she beat the **** out of Ellie. Cruel to make us watch pregnant Dina be impaled with an arrow. In my opinion, Tommy should’ve killed Lev and then they should’ve switched us back to Ellie to finish of Abby but NO that would’ve been too kind to the audience wouldn’t it. The disappointment just settled in my stomach as I realised Abby got to walk away after 18+ hours of either chasing her or playing as her. Even after the 10 hours of playing as her I still wanted her to die.

So the next very odd but momentarily wholesome small bit of gameplay of Ellie and Dina with the baby at the house. Finally I thought, finally Ellie has some peace, the secluded house, Dina and the baby to look after, sure a little PTSD here and there but who doesn’t have that in that world right? I really was hoping for end credits to pop up at any moment, Ellie had some peace I didn’t need more than that but man did I cry and beg right alongside Dina for Ellie to stay after Tommy asked her to go back out for revenge.

The whole story/gameplay after that felt so forced. Abby and Lev searching for Fireflies and Ellie chasing them in California? Basically shooting through a whole concentration camp INJURED just to find this **** only to have a pathetic punch up and then... letting her go. Man I ****ing hated playing the remaining 5 hours more than I did playing the 10 with Abby, something I did not think was possible at the time. The one silver lining was the flashback with Joel at the end, my heart felt warm knowing he didn’t die thinking Ellie hated him.

**** NaughtyDog, you should’ve got your writers from Uncharted 4 on this but instead looks like you got someone from Ubisoft to destroy Ellie and Joel’s story.

It was something the had been done before in games, but the sum of its parts made it a game that for me was almost a 10/10 for me. When I heard that the sequel was finally coming out I was ecstatic. I was wanting to see the rest of the story of Joel and Ellie.

Then the leaks came out...oh boy the leaks. I don't give a crap if a character is gay or trans, but what matters is that they are wrote as a human being first not just some token character that we get so much of in today's media, but what we got was this....trainwreck.

As I said I wanted to like this game, I really did. This game had the potential to tell a great story. It tells a story, but the story it tells fell flat for me. Without going into details, I love a revenge plot. I have seen so many in movies and other games, but this one dropped the ball hard. However, I am not wanting to spoil the game for anyone out of respect for the players, not the company or its marketing.

This could have been a great sequel if it wasn't handled so poorly. Abby could have been a good character if they handled it better, Joel was all-but squandered, but Ellie I enjoyed. It was good to see her grow up, but then the last half of the game.....urgh.

That's why I have to give this game a 4. Graphically its fine, a good 7 out of 10, Gameplay is the same 7 out of 10, Story is an abysmal 3 out of 10. If this was a different IP I might have scored it higher with a 5 out of 10 or a 6. Yet, this is not a new IP. This is a sequel to one of the best games I have played and one that I have finished more than once just to find things i may have missed the first time. Sequels will always be judged more harshly by the fans of the previous installment. Many sequels will never be as good or even greater than the original.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a huge fan of the first game and as someone who read the leaks and thought they were terrible, I really felt the game was amazing on playing it.

The common criticisms are easily rebuked. Joel gave his name because A) Tommy already did so when they first encountered Abby, so he couldn't lie and B) He hasn't been a gruff, distrusting bad ass for years now. He's a community man who has another daughter, so he's going to soften up and in general just be nicer! He's the Joel from the prelude of the first game, again.

The story isn't about revenge alone, that's only the first layer. It's about how love conquers it, as we saw with Abby's arch with Lev and Ellie forgiving Joel at the very end. Ellie sparing Abby isn't FOR Abby, it's Ellie forgiving herself and Joel for never making amends over the lies about the Fireflies. That's what was driving Ellie more than anything; her hatred of herself for not giving Joel a chance soon enough. By the end she's able to reconcile with that, regain her humanity, accept her dues, and move forward.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i am giving this a 3 for the amazing job the naughty dog team did when it comes to environments, graphics, sounds and fluent combat mechanics, otherwise it would've been a 0/10. its sad to think how really talented people can make such a visual and audio masterpiece just so someone like neil turn it into a huge pile of crap.
    1. you have to be brain dead to think that people had issues with lesbians, transgender or male characters dying. those who had this sort of issues are frustrated people that have literally no right to have an opinion in any point of view (not only this game), so they can keep their hate and beliefs to themselves.
i have been a fan of the first the last of us game since the release. i was too poor to get a ps3 so i had to wait to play it when i got my first ps4 (offering an amazing experience as a remastered product). When the last of us 2 came out, i tried my best to stay away from the spoilers and was pretty disappointed with everybody hating the game (for reasons i honestly didn't understand). So dodging any unofficial information as much as possible. In meantime i preordered the game and followed whatever official news i could find, everything getting me more and more hyped! I started praising this game everywhere i could... till the last 5 minutes of gameplay...
as we are living in an era where you don't play videogames just for the sake of doing it (like we did in the past), story plays a huge role in the gaming industry.
so, after playing the first game for like 3 times, i got into the last of us 2 with a pretty huge emotional baggage, hoping to hop into a new adventure with ellie and joel.
unfortunately that was not the case... grabbing the controller for the first 2 hours i fell in love with the world the game had to offer. was sad a bit i did not get to spend that much time with joel but i was ok with it... "its a big game, there's plenty of time...". till there's not...
i don't want to dive that much into the story so i will get here what naughty dog could've done and what i really hated about it.
    1. don't make joel and tommy act out of their character. they made them look STUPID. joel was the most cautious and smart character in game (his brother as well). are you going to tell me that they will go in a house full of strangers and they'll tell them their names in the first 10 seconds of their encounter??? no god damn way! that's trash writing there. how to fix it? make abby save joel's life. then he can be grateful for it and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE i can believe that he can blindly trust her and leave his guard down... or if you're leaving it like that, at least give abby a interior conflict. like "joel saved my life, what if he's not a bad guy??". i was pissed about my favorite character dying, but i could understand the way things were going (or at least i thought i did).
    2. don't push abby down my throat for 10+ hours as a playable character after she murdered joel in that brutal manner. solution to this problem? kill joel later. use those nice flashbacks of ellie and joel at the beginning of the game and put them on the same time with abby's flashbacks (one at a time). this way you create a profound sense of loss for joel but in the same time create empathy for abby. because (and sorry for the language), i couldn't give a single **** about whatever you throw at me about abby after what she done. don't just throw flashbacks everywhere and expect people to understand that abby is human as well. WE KNOW THAT ALREADY NAUGHTY DOG.
    3. don't make me fight ellie with abby. nobody wanted that and people hated abby even more when she found out that dina was pregnant and she said "GOOD!" with a sick smile on her face! you try to humanize her but in the same time its obviously that she's a cold hearted murderer.
the thing i hated the most about the last of us 2 story. THE ENDING. all that propaganda about "revenge is bad" while murdering hundreds of people and having literally all your friends die shows up front how poorly written is this story.
for you as a real life person, put yourself in ellie's shoes with all the emotional, physical, psychical baggage and the ability to get that revenge on the person that killed the closest thing to a father (being forced to watch the entire brutal scene happen). please tell me you'd stay right in front of that person (after killing hundreds of people) and just say "i'm ending this here! leave! revenge is bad!".
the last of us 2 is dark, cruel and brutal. an ending with ellie "finding the light" out of nowhere is literally garbage. solution? make 2 endings and let people chose how they feel about it. (not that hard).
i know that there are people out here thinking that they smart for finding out the whole "secret meaning" of the game.
if the last of us 2 would've been a stand alone game, would've been awesome! being a sequel of the masterpiece the first game was, this game is an offense to everybody that loved the first game

The gameplay was fun at times (around 1/8th of the game), the AI were smarter than in the last game, and it is visually pleasing. So, I will rate it a 3 just for that alone. but... the story and the golf club just ruined it all. If I were to rate it on the story alone, it would get an honest 0. It wasn't the politics or social commentary that was in the game that ruined it for me. I just wish Joel was around a LOT more, and if we just had to play as Abby, play her in the beginning so you can actually get to sympathize with her instead of having her almost immediately murder a beloved character in her introduction. Did a child mess with the storyboard? Expand

What can I say? A game I have been waiting for a long time TLOU2 is here and after a full play through I have been let down.

Now that’s not to say the game is without its merits. The most beautiful game I have ever seen beating RDR2 which is a great effort. Also the gameplay is just as good as the first game.

I only encountered 2 graphic issues. One during a nest in the hotel the game slowed down to a stutter and I felt like I was moving in slow motion for ten minutes. The other was during a cutscene late on in the game a character had been holding a brick but was comforting another so that brick was stuck in his face making me miss all the facial expressions.

The game is dark and I don’t just mean some of the creepy locations. It’s graphic from drug use to sex scenes and oh the violence. The game is filled with it most of the time it’s though provoking but it lays on some senseless deaths of main characters that happen in a split second for shock value.

The characters are incredible and are a joy to witness. Ellie, Joel, Dina, Tommy, Jesse and even Abby, Owen and Mel are all superb. I thoroughly enjoyed playing as Ellie and her interactions with her lover and friends.

My first 15 hours of gameplay I would of been giving this game a 9 out of 10. Then a switch happened. I’m sure I know what they were trying to do. It just doesn’t work. I have never played a character that I truly didn’t care if they die. The next ten hours where spent feeling forced to desperately like someone I was willing to throw of a high building over and over again. The story dips from there and I played through the worst boss fight in history. After feeling so disheartened the game gives you what you believe is an escape.

Only to then disappoint you with the finale. It drags the whole story down to feeling like the whole thing doesn’t matter and becoming a waste of your time. I so wish they had ended it at the 15 hour mark with an incredible ending. Instead they drag you kicking and screaming for another 14 hours to such an anti climatic and sad ending it may make you question playing a naughty dog game again.

Don’t play this game with mental health issues. There is no happiness or justice or light. It’s depressing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It really is a shame that the leaks occured and prevented so many people from enjoying this game spoiler free. Or just flat-out refusing to give it a chance. The metacritic review bombing is childish, and so boringly predictable with it. It says more about outrage culture than anything else, and the lack of nuance allowed in mainstream entertainment.

We're not 'owed' anything, in terms of story. So what Naughty Dog have done here, on the back of a very simple story in Part 1, is tell a story they wanted to tell. Not only that, but they have done it more intelligently. Both parts share the fact that they are essentially character-driven narratives, which is always the best basis for a successful story. When I saw in the leaks that you ended up playing as Joel's murderer, my first instinct was how bold a choice that was. While others were upset, I was more intrigued by the fact that they had made this choice in the first place, and that it wouldn't be a rote action sequel. ND were going to try something different, and I applauded that, while also being intrigued about whether they could pull it off, because if not, then yes, it really would fall flat.

So, you play as Joel's murderer and the challenge ND set themselves was to turn around the player's viewpoint so far that you might begin to empathise or even like this new Abby character. BOLD. Know what may have been bolder? Player choice at the end, and an in-built prompt that told ND the result. Did the player choose to kill Abby, or let her go? The results would've been interesting, and may even have validated their story choice to an extent.

But this isn't the player's journey. So having that option taken out of your hands, much like at the end of part 1, just emphasises that point. These aren't your characters. They're not mine. We're watching what they do. Good entertainment often makes us squirm, or uncomfortable - not enough games do that, so to have one that does, and may even make you want to turn off, is a brave developer choice. People can be mad about it; see the leaks and boycott it, but this boldness is something missing from what has become more and more an adult medium. More adults play games than children, so to have a mainstream game that challenges in terms of story, and not just violence, gore, gameplay and puzzles, is welcome.

Do they pull it off? In the final standoff, would I have let Abby go or kill her? I would've let her go. Without experiencing Abby's arc, would I have let her go? Well, that's an interesting thought too. By the end, Ellie is shattered; both of you have slaughtered hundreds to get there, and gone through emotional turmoil - Ellie's character design at the end is shocking, as she's verging on anorexic. You can see the impact of all that hate and anger. So yeah, maybe seeing that Abby is looking after Lev (which adds to the guilt), and Ellie's own struggle at the time, might've been enough to let Abby go, even without experiencing her arc.

As an aside, while mentioning character design, I think it has to be hats off to the dev team for Abby's design. The braid and muscle, two simple things, combine to make an immediately exceptional design. You only need to find the spoiler memes across the net to see how it captures something unique. Hats off too to not overplaying the muscles - a lot of Abby's character is inferred, and there's something human about a little girl burning her anger with muscle-building so that when the time comes for revenge, she is more than ready for it. The fact she is NOT trans, or gay, but just a muscled woman, also serves to expose the ludricrousness of the review bombs that talk about pushing some form of agenda.

The only agenda, when it comes to the main characters, is diversity. Outside of the bubble of Joel's murder, Abby would've been (and was anyway) a kick-ass character to play. Women can be muscley too. And gays exist. It doesn't need saying, but for some people, it does. Creating a game with a diversity of main characters, especially one so in the public eye, is overwhelming inclusive. It helps normalise diversity. The more this is done, the better.

Though the harder the push-back (see: the review-bombs).

Is the story perfect? No. It falls foul of its own realism. In many games you wouldn't think too hard about characters coming and going, but here, after you've struggled through infected and armies, and just struggled to even find a path at times, it felt incongruous to have characters suddenly find you. That anyone wants to live in, let alone fight over, Seattle, is also unrealistic. However, everything mentioned, combined with beautiful environments and exciting, accessible, varied, FUN gameplay, make this game 10/10.

The story is a chore from begin to end, characters completely annihilated by dumb decisions, the graphics are not going to redeem this complete mess.
    I absolutely hated this game.

I am not a fan of TLOU, but even I am sorry for everything I saw.
I can’t imagine the pain of those who waited for this game for a very long time
Having such a budget and creating a technically excellent game, create this....

What an absolute nightmare, this should be preserved well to show how bad game production can be.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
