This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So to start, I haven't left a review on Metacritic for quite sometime but I feel that I NEED to. The people who are giving this game a low score and playing the beginning and not finishing need to stop because if they did, they wouldn't have the audacity to give this game a low score. I will explain why even small parts earn the right to "adding points" even if you rated the game a 0.

How in the world could this game ever score anything lower than a 9? Watching the beginning unfold had to be one of the hardest things to witness in my 25 years gaming. The death of Joel makes you want to jump through your screen and choke the life from Abby. With each blow that Abby hits Joel with; then Ellie screaming "please stop hitting him" makes your emotions fly through the roof. Any game that can bring tears to your eyes, even if you hate whats happening, deserves 3 points out of 10. A game made you feel a certain way just by playing it and that says a lot about the writers because emotions are a natural function of everything and are hard to bring out.

Fast forward to Ellie trying to find Abby and seek revenge.....why did Abby do all of this? This of course is a question that we ask ourselves. Ellie would do anything to kill Abby and anyone who gets in her way. But at what cost?

You watch yourself (Player) kill your way through person after person(and dogs) not realizing that everything you are doing is going to hurt once you meet them as Abby and who they are. Playing with the dogs and meeting the characters as Abby in some parts knowing that a couple hours ago you just killed them brutally with Ellie makes you feel a certain way again. Once again emotions take over. To not realize it until the game throws it back in your face is another level of playing field when it comes to developing and writing a story. Earns another 3 points. (I bet more than half the reviews didn't even make it to the Abby parts *sigh*)

Fast forward again. THEN the developers show how Abby goes from this selfish punk to a Joel like role towards Liv and changes her point of view in many aspects of her own life. Would she kill anyone to save Liv?... Would feeling this way now possibly stop her from killing Joel? Seeing his side of the story could of changed her decisions in the past. Loving Ellie was more than "saving the world to Joel" Having only Liv left in Abby's life at this point, would she kill the random doctor trying to take that away from her? These a more questions you ask yourself and how Naughty Dog depicts so frickin well.

There is so many things that happen that there is too much to write down here. I will say that in the end you see what Ellie truly lost and what Abby learned with the knowledge she gained through her arrogant and ignorant reasons. Loss sucks any way you put it but life does go on and its terrible to see that both Ellie and Abby have made some terrible decisions to only realize them in the games closing.

I PROMISE you that if you actually finish this game and see it through, you will not be disappointed. The gameplay, the shear aggressiveness of each battle, the story that will blow you mind right down to the last second and the pure emotionally ride you take playing this game; earns even more points so if you hated this game for you own reasons, these reasons suggest a score of at least 7+ Just give it the chance to open itself up to you as you progress and see what the true story is.

This game deserves every point, star, rating, etc. that exists not because it was just a great game; that if you finished it, you know that as a human being; a gamer; nothing quite like the full story of The Last of Us will never leave us emotionally. When someone brings up this game to you in your life, you will always FEEL a certain way about what went down and how you felt towards it. You will always feel inclined to "put in your two cents" and why do you ask? Because even if you rated it low or had a gripe about this, that or the other, Joel's death, what Ellie felt she needed to do and Abby getting revenge for her father were part of an elaborate plan to show you, as the player, that emotions fuel everything we do in life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first game is one i hold very close to my heart and is one if the best experiences I've had on a games console. TLOU2 has to be the most graphically groundbreaking game on PS4. The combat is exhilarating and the environments lush and realistic. Thats about it though. The comparison with the Last Jedi is well documented. I hate the way Naughty dog tries to emotionally manipulate the player into hate Ellie and care for Abby. There are no redeeming emotional qualities at the end of this game. Everyone loses. There so many logic fails that compound the gaming experience. Abbey is rammed down your throat and you are forced 'cheaply' yo try and care for her but you have no desire for her to survive, she seems to take revenge with no moral concerns. She was about to relish in slitting a pregnant womans throat whereas Ellie is visibly tormented by her actions yet you are made to play as Abby for half the game. Expanding on the logic fails. Abby has chance to kill Ellie - lets her go. Abby has another chance to kill Ellie - lets her go. Ellie after settling into somewhat comfortable existence then goes back out and after travelling half way across the country to find Abby AGAIN - lets her go. In all at the end Ellie is a shell of the person she was at the end of the first game. Joel has been **** all over, remember Joel.. One of the most beloved video games of all time that has less than 10 minutes of screen time in this game. You have absolutely no emotional fulfillment to take away at the end of the game. I don't care about sexual orientation or any of that. Its just the sheer disrespect of relationship between Ellie and Joel that I can't forgive and leaves me slightly heartbroken. What have they done? Expand

YOU SAID that TLOU2 was about both Joel and Ellie! You also said: "Trust us, we won't fail you, we love these characters more than anyone"... Yeah right, guess what: IT WAS A LIE. The way he dies is just ridiculous and having a character that looks like you spitting on him? **** YOU.
Well, besides that the game deserves all the praise, i'm a great TLOU fan, but if TLOU3 ever exist i won't buy it, Joel's death meant this game is dead to me.

I loved the story, the gameplay is much better than Tlou 1, the graphics and facial expressions are something I've never seen in a game, the AI had a great improvement, atmosphere and the soundtrack are just incredible. This game made me feel so many emotions, I felt love, anger, hate, empathy, I cried countless times during the game. All flashbacks are a masterpiece (especially the museum scene).
I found the change of perspective so interesting, showing that there are always two sides to a story.
I loved all the new characters, especially Dina and Lev, Ellie and Abby are incredible and well-written characters, Joel excellent character (I will miss him a lot).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First let me say this game was not all bad. Like many people I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, the storyline at the beginning in Jackson, and Dina and Ellie’s side story. However, that’s about all I can say for the good parts.

I’m sure at some point (maybe even soon) this comment will be taken down since it is going to be very critical of the game. Fine by me. This game completely destroyed everything the first one built. From Ellie and Joel’s relationship becoming fuller and more compassionate, to Ellie’s character development in strength and understanding of the world. This game had so much potential to be great, and I think a lot of us expected a storyline that was much different. Especially considering the original trailers for the game were not even accurate to gameplay. I mean, ya’ll even said Ellie was going to be the only playable character in the game when you were first developing it, so I guess that was either a lie or you changed your mind, but either way, poorly executed.

Personally I feel like any of the fans could have written a more comprehensible and well organized game in their sleep. I think the message of the game that hate and revenge get you nowhere would have been much more well received if you had given the fans time to dive into the story a little before throwing Ellie out into the thick of it. Why didn’t we get to see more about life in Jackson? Why wasn’t Ellie’s relationships with HER BEST FRIENDS not shown more? Why would you kill Joel in the FIRST FREAKING HOUR OF THE GAME??? Don’t get me wrong, I think killing Joel was an essential part of Ellie’s character arc, but the way this was all gone about was dreadful. It’s like you took the original characters and watered them down to a milk toast version of themselves that would be more commercially palatable. Oh my god, and Abby’s storyline! How could I forget? Why would you have people play as Abby for a majority of the game? I’m sorry was this supposed to be all about her? You could have easily given Abby her own game. Hell I would have played that! But no, all you wanted to do was keep fans guessing the whole way through the game. Around every corner a new twist you never expected. You wanna know why we didn’t expect some of those twists and turns, because they made the game intolerable. They didn’t make any sense! From Ellie’s TWO opportunities to kill Abby, to her leaving Dina after they made a life together, even Tommy’s lack of understanding for Ellie not wanting to go after Abby anymore (but then still going after her for some reason after she spent the whole game trying to keep Dina, like wtf??). I mean, wasn’t Ellie the one who had to convince Tommy to go after Abby in the first place? Why the flip between characters? To create parallels?? Crap. Absolute crap.

I’m sure there are people out there who appreciate the game, but I am not one of those people, and I encourage you to wait until this game goes on clearance to play it. DO NOT waste your money, borrow a copy from a friend if you really wanna play it that bad. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman do not deserve your hard earned cash for this absolute garbage heap of a game. Kudos to the people who worked hard and put real passion and effort into this game, I’m sorry you had to see something with so much potential get ruined by someone without vision. I’m looking at you Neil. Way to blow.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I'm a big fan of the original and that I don't agree with almost all of the backlash this game has gotten.

GAMEPLAY: If you enjoyed the gameplay of the original you will definitely enjoy it in this game. Combat feels visceral and tense. Weapon variety is excellent and there are many ways to handle combat situations without feeling like too many. The stealth mechanics work well and don't feel as tedious as in some other games. Being found out by an enemy isn't the end of the world and if you are quick and clever you can go back to hiding. (NOTE* I played on normal difficulty and found that in some cases I had more crafting supplies then I needed. If you are experienced with this style of game and are looking for a challenge you may want to bump up the difficulty level)

ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere was incredibly well done. Individual chapters each feel unique and have their own style to them. Everything from visual cues and sound really help to immerse you in this treacherous world you are exploring. Trying to sneak up on a clicker in a dark room is just as tense and controller gripping as it was in the first game.(also I know graphics aren't everything but man is this game stunning to look at.

ENEMIES: Enemies are well done both infected and human. There is enough variety in the infected that they are interesting and difficult to encounter. The human enemies also feel a lot more genuine and seem to have more human-like reactions then I have seen in any third-person-shooter.

COLLECTIBLES: I don't normally enjoy collectibles in games but I actual found myself actively hunting them out here and getting a rush each time I found one. At least for the first half, I didn't have the same excitement for the second half of the game.

STORY: As I said I am a big fan of the first game and I think that the story felt like a natural and well done continuation of character arcs and themes from the first game. When new characters were introduced I found myself hesitating a bit to warm up to them due to certain story moments but as I spent more time with them and they revealed more about themselves I began to see them as more well rounded and those character arcs were something I really admired by the end of the game.

I found the themes of the perpetual cycle of violence and how the "othering" of our fellow man not only dehumanizes them but also dehumanizes us to be really clear and powerful throughout the game.

CRITIQUES: While I largely enjoyed most of this game I do have some criticisms. It feels like sometimes the "gut punch" moments of the story are stacked a little too much to the point where they begin to lose some of their impact and you begin to numb to the pain of the characters. This is especially true with the amount of physical punishment that gets dished out.

A moment at the end of the game felt a bit awkward and while I don't wish they had changed the ending I wish they would have changed how the ending came about to make it fit more with the established character arcs and themes.

This is more subjective but as I noted I never really felt like I was low on equipment past the early game which I think would have helped with tension of the game if resources had been harder to find.

Also a gameplay transition in the middle of the game felt a bit jarring and perhaps could have been handled a bit differently.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience with TLoU2 and it was a game I would think about afterwards and a gameplay loop I was excited to jump back into when I wasn't playing. If you were a fan of the original and are open to the idea of it's gamplay and themes being carried by new characters I would definitely recommend it.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
