The game is a piece of trash because you're forced to play as Abby for many hours. Why would I want to play as her when she killed Joel in the most sadistic way. She kills him with a golf club.
I liked Joel from the last game and am invested in him. So I hate Abby yet had to play as her for a long time. You play as Ellie not enough and in the ending she still doesn't even kill Abby. That is so out of character when she has killed a lot of people before. Why would she suddenly not do it?
Als, the game is basically like a movie. I want a game, not a movie. Cutscenes after cutscenes and some sort of QTE gameplay. Oh please, give me a break.
This is a bad game. Really bad pacing. You are jumping back and forth in time in flashbacks. So bad.

The layouts of fights were sometimes claustrophobic enough to induce panic, and sometimes wide and open with many options for stealth or head-on fights. I had a brief moment around 60% of the way through the game where I was feeling a bit of drag and was tempted to go read ending spoilers to see where everything was going. I'd recommend powering through if you haven't been spoiled - I'm glad I did!

    The good:
Characters: The supporting cast was charming and fun without devoting too much game time to fleshing them out. Ellie is older and is grappling with some heavy stuff, and you can't help but feel everything alongside of her. New characters are a welcome addition to the mix of motivations and interactions.
Setting: The locations are great and feel fresh, even spots that can be overused in games (subway stations, banks)

    The bad:
Timeline/series of events: Sometimes I felt a little like I was watching Westworld Season 2. Where are we? What's already happened? Non-linear timelines can be executed well, but in this case it was a bit distracting. The structure of the game was already a creative use of timelines, so adding in random flashbacks was additionally jarring.
Theme/gameplay combo: This game has a strong message about choice, but at no point did I feel I could make a meaningful impact on the story. Games that are on rails are totally fine, but I have to imagine a small decision tree could have been implemented to great effect.

Overall, great game. Suffers from a sequel's curse of not quite hitting exactly the same notes as the first game, but amazing nonetheless.

What a crap story. This game could have been one if the best but the writers (neil druckmann) political and world views ruined it completely. Also the game didnt need a sequel but it got one, a bad one.Literally spitting in the face of the original game.

I've never felt compelled to write a review for a game, but after playing The Last of Us Part II and witnessing the drama, I feel I must share my opinion.

    Story:

The most important part of any linear, narrative-focused game. Unfortunately, it is this game's weakest part. At it's basic level, this game is a revenge story with a message that revenge is unimportant and harmful to the one seeking it. It's been done before but most stories have been; the key is how each take handles it. I do not feel that this game does anything new or unexpected with the concept, with the only twists being the lack of payoffs. There's also a disconnect between the theme of revenge and violence being bad and the majority of the gameplay. By the end, players will be accustomed and desensitized to violence, not put off by it.

Worse still, the story's message causes characters to behave illogically at various points. If characters remained true to their nature, the game would either go in a different direction or the message of "revenge is bad" would have to be dropped. As it stands, different characters jump between bloodlust and mercy, often in the same scene, and each time it makes little sense.

The worst part of the story, however, happens at about the mid-point. Having reached the climax, the game abruptly shifts and essentially begins again with the player starting at an earlier point with no upgrades or collected supplies. About half of the latter part of this game is played through in this way until arriving at the same climax as before. This is the equivalent of starting a story over and it utterly disrupts the progress. The story is not nearly abstract enough to call for this diversion and the result is a disjointed feeling of two different stories cobbled together. The natural thing would be to let the story progress from the climax and end, with the diversion appearing as an unlockable scenario to play when the first part is completed. It's not a radical idea but it makes sense and it prevents the derailment of the story's flow.

The story is an average, uninspired affair brought down by characters plagued with inconsistencies and a bizarre narrative choice.

    Gameplay:

It takes what the first game established and polishes it. The gameplay cycle of exploration and combat is the same with additions to stealth and combat mechanics. Gunplay especially feels more solid compared to the original game and melee options are also expanded upon. Exploration and puzzle solving sections also feel more robust. That said, none of the mechanics outdo games focused on one or fewer elements.

    Graphics:

This is the pinnacle feature of this game. From character models to environments to animations, the only word for them all is "gorgeous". This game takes the style of its predecessor and upgrades everything to take advantage of the more powerful hardware. There's not much more I can say about it, except that the coders, animators, and artists are the real stars of this game.

If this were end of my review I'd rate the game at five. Zero is for games that cannot function. Ten is for an immaculate product that does not exist. Despite the technical achievements, my score is dragged down by the story. That said, there are two more issues that I cannot in good faith ignore.

    1. Content Strikes and Review Embargos

I'm combining these because they both have to do with censorship. When the leaks for this game came out, Naughty Dog was completely in the right to take down any clips, images, and discussions of the spoilers. Opinions on the contents without the contents, however, were different. Naughty Dog does not own people's opinions and such a shocking example of censorship is unforgivable. In addition, preventing critics from discussing the full game's story when that story is, again, the biggest part of the experience makes for half-finished reviews that do not give consumers the full picture. I'm deducting one point from my review in response to both these points.

    2. Crunch Time

People say this is a problem with the game industry and they are right. With recent articles about Naught Dog's use of the concept, however, and looking at the beautiful graphics, I feel the crunch was especially cruel here. These employees are artists, not mules to be ground down by impossible burdens. If a game can't meet a release deadline without using sweatshop hours, push the damned release back. That goes for all game developers but I can only imagine the sacrifice Naughty Dog's employees had to endure to polish the game to this level. Until I see evidence of improvement, all of Naughty Dog's products I review will receive a penalty of one point.

    Summary:

This is a gorgeous game with adequate gameplay let down by its story and the developer's questionable actions. Whatever awards the game receives, I hope the ones to accept them are the people who gave so much to make it possible, not the man standing on top of them.

First of all the graphics in this game is topnotch wow!I had to stop once in a while just to look at the views, the snowy mountains, the falls, the flowing water, the grass, everything in this game is so crisply made and so detailed. You can clearly see the character's emotions in their faces. It's just breathtaking. The gameplay is just alright. The same with the first one with some added features like dodge and you can finally crawl now(thank god). You can also throw ropes and break windows to get to new areas which is a good addition for it can at least keep your mind running what to do next. The sound of this game is absolutely beautiful too. When I first throw a brick to break that window, the sound of a breaking glass is just so good as it shatters and hits the floor, just downright earcandy(if that even makes sense). Then comes the story that ruined it all.Naughty Dog forgot a very important thing.Majority of the fans if not all wanna buy this game because of the story, not the gameplay, not the graphics. It's what made the first one such a masterpiece.I'm not homophobic or have issues with LGBTs or having to watch a sex scene of a man and a woman whose muscles are way bigger than him(I was actually laughing the whole time while they're doing it)or whatever agenda you're trying to push.I don't care about any of that. I only care about the story which you ruined so badly and poorly written. They made Tommy and Joel complete idiots in this sequel.Tommy gave his name to a complete stranger and even invited them to resupply back at their base, worse is even Joel gave his name too to these strangers. When I first saw it I was like wait what?Is this even Joel and Tommy? It's so uncharacteristic of them to be careless and stupid like that. It's okay to change a character's fundamental trait,Squall for example being a loner, but it was shown throughout the game why he was like that and what changed him and how in the end he became more open to people. Joel and Tommy did not have that it was a straight up extreme character 360 with no explanation at all. That's just lazy story writing right there. After that the game just became an ordinary lame revenge plot which was poorly written too WTF! Abby killed someone you dearly loved and your friends, now you have a chance to give them justice and guess what? She bites off two of your fingers, then suddenly have a rush of conscience(even after killing women and dogs) then let's her go. How in the world would you even think that that's a good idea of a story? In the movie industry that could win you bajillion of awards but guess what? It's a **** videogame!!!! Expand

The last of us Part 2 scores a 10 out of 10, with the most amazing graphics (foliage, water, facial expressions, the representation of a Seattle in decay...), more of the same game mechanics from part 1, new enemies and a very satisfying soundtrack.
That is... without the story and the poorly made choices the gamer has to endure.

Spoilers NOW, seriously stop reading if you haven't finished the game!

Instead of telling the story and unfolding the difficult relationship between Joel and Ellie, Naughty Dog decides it would be best to kill Joel and send Ellie on a revenge mission. Hatred, anger and stubbornness set the tone, but they aren't accompanied with character development. In fact, the choices you have to make with Ellie (several times) are utmost illogical. After completing the game you're left with a bitter aftertaste.
And if that isn't enough, you are forced as a gamer to play +-/ 15 hours with the murderer of Joel, trying to kill Tommy and beating Ellie and her girlfriend to a pulp. The murderer of Joel has it's own emotional story and a fair amount of reasons to take revenge on Joel/Ellie, but still... ... being forced to play with this character and having to make choices I didn't want to make, left me several times in a state where I didn't want to play anymore (and most of us looked forward to playing the game for 7 years).

The are 2 emotional flashbacks where you play as Joel and Ellie again, leaving you frustrated, bittered and even upset, knowing that, with the chemistry between those two, this could've been the best game sequel ever made!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just so disappointed :( The Last of us has, for years, been my favorite game of all time. I was so excited to continue the story. The visuals and score do a fantastic job however that’s kind of where the positives finished for me. The gameplay didn’t feel too different to the first however it did lose its charm for me much faster. I felt a lot of encounters to be repetitive. However my biggest issue has to be the direction of the story. I loved Joel, I get that he is a flawed character but literally everyone is in these worlds. But he was OUR character in the game. I I was not even mad about his death or even the manner of it. I knew that would be a powerful way to send Ellie on her revenge quest. But to force you to play as the antagonist and beat Ellie was a joke. 10 hour or so playing as the character her brutally murdered your character from the first game, playing through as the story rams down your throats “look these people are nice sand kind too in their version of events”. I understand what they were trying to do but I just couldn’t enjoy playing as Abby after what happened isn’t the opening chapter. Expand
