Great job on making the game it is a good one but in my opinion, in single player games the writing is the main dish which was a mess here, idc about the emotional soundtrack or how perfectly real the face expressions if I’m out of the mood to appreciate it, and the writing did that to me many times throughout the gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first game was both the heroes journey and villains origin. On one side Joel goes from being a jaded smuggler to a loving father figure and he also goes from being the smuggler to being a slaughter of innocence. The first game sets us up in the second game has to start in that place and live through it.
After finishing the game and thinking back to the beginning of starting in Jackson and even going to Seattle day one feels like forever ago and it has to. Like no other this game uses narrative and gameplay together to connect the player to the character in this incredible link that is one of the biggest feats of storytelling in recent memory. When Joel died I felt just as Ellie did, when Ellie killed Nora I was visibly shaken like Ellie was, finally when the fight occurred between Abby and Ellie I was exhausted and done with all of it. This was always the mission of the first game to connect the player in the characters in a way that wasn’t possible through any other medium. This game takes everything that the first had in the rule that was set out that was if nothing else write honestly everything has to feel honest there’s no fan service there are no moments that we as the player are given everything and finally satisfied because that would feel wrong. The story is there only to be told, And it is only told because it has to be.

This game is a masterpiece. Technically is absolutely fantastic. I can´t name a single game that comes close in quality terms. The graphics take the PS4 to another level, the ambience is superb and the gameplay (especially if you like the first game) is very good. All that remains is the story, the theme of all controversy.

To some will be great, to some is disappointment, it all depends on how your feelings work. I started in one position view and I ended in another way different, that means the story did its purpose. I love all characters and some I thought I would hate forever. This is TLOU level of writing, hard, painful but in the end... human. A great, great game...

It is very frustrating to wait for so long and receive this "final product" that was obviously broken. Characters that fans loved and respected had their developments withdrawn so that the "plot" could be more realistic and plausible, in addition to the bugs and problems in combat and also the lack of it, because with 10 hours of game-play 8 seriously and cut-scene is like if you were watching an interactive soap opera with a bad plot. I had the true pleasure of just beating the Last of Us 2. I am giving this game a 10, because I truly feel that it deserves it. I am not trying to combat the 0s although a lot of those seems to be more based off the leaks than the actual game. II had the true pleasure of just beating the Last of Us 2. I am giving this game a 10, because I truly feel that it deserves it. I am not trying to combat the 0s although a lot of those seems to be more based off the leaks than the actual game. Well let me tell you, for someone that found out about a few of the leaks before the game came out, the game delivered for me, and then some. I won’t lie this game took me longer because it could be emotionally Daunting at times. It was brutal, depressing, complicated. Many times I would say, “Don’t do it, Ellie.” But you understood why, and can I say the ending really helps recapture why. This game is truly what a good sequel should do. Keep us familiar with the world while adding a deeper dive into the characters. Let me talk about my gripe first because it is nit picky: But The gun customization, while I loved all the new things they did with it, the animation took awhile to get through. Don’t get me wrong it was cool to see, but after a few times I was ready to get back to the action. With Ellie we got that, we got see her grow from hopefully being this goofy kid, to a competent adult wishing her father figure trusted her more. Especially with how he lied to her at the end o of the last game. (Which they handle so well in the sequel). This game you truly see what it means to become obsessed with one mission and to see it through until the end. Which by the way I get why she was doing it in the first place, but the last scene at the end of the game made it even more painful. (Well dons Dogs!) Ellie’s gameplay was a blast, having her trusty switchblade with her was always fantastic!

I also really enjoyed what they did with Abby’s character. They took someone you hate when you first meet her, and then they break her down and you see how she ticks and by the end you see how much she has grown. The last fight *chef’s kiss* also Abby got that dope Boss Battle in the basement of the Hospital. I loved it! All in all the narrative was impressive, and as much of a risk as it was Naughty Dog swung for the fences and hit the ball out of the park. While this game does get so dark and brutal and depressing they give you wonderfully tender moments, Dina and Ellie, Abby and Owen, Ellie and Joel, Abby and Lev (friggin love Lev!) and so many others (special shout out to the ladies man Manny!) they also give you some fantastic flashbacks. The one for Ellie’s birthday brought a tear to my eye. Also the way the guitar was incorporated into the game beautifully done.

The score sublime, the art perfect, and the new customizables were great! All of the acting was top notch, Ellie still may be my favorite character from the series but Abby, Lev and Dina fought there way into my hawser.

This game had me hook line and sinker. It was an unexpected but wonderful sequel that after some time to ponder my existence as a human I will have to play again to grab the collectibles.

Nicely done Naughty Dog you made a sequel worth of its predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, that was something. Not everyone's cup of tea, some bits were really good, and some bits were really bad. First of all, the art was insane, the detail, storytelling and world building is second to none. Character animations are excellent, with amazing acting and cut scenes.

Music and audio overall was unreal. Extremely immersive and created a beautiful atmosphere. The level design was what you'd expect from a Naughty Dog title at the moment, diverse and sometimes fun. The added dimension of crawling and climbing was implemented well, however I didn't enjoy the invisible borders to the levels, I think this is a cheap level design move and ruins the immerssion. The gameplay was okay, it hadn't really evolved into anything more than what it was before, some of the cover and shooting was a bit clunky and unfortunately didn't feel well thought out at times. Killing gets very repetitive and becomes an unrewarding experience to borderline grindy and monotonous. I'd have quite enjoyed setting traps, problem solving ways of getting out of rooms, better designed stealth missions and just simply exploring some interesting areas. Considering in Uncharted we can climb so much stuff, I was very surprised this wasn't something added.

The story, well, I don't really know what to say... For me, it was just a mess. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming history, seems like a very nasty way to destroy all the love and respect built from the first title, and to do it for shock is for all the wrong reasons. I'd dare say it's borderline selfish.

Secondly, taking away player agency and forcing them down a bottleneck to play the very character who murdered Joel in an attempt to provoke emotion, again, feels very self righteous, and the manipulation tactic designed to make the player enjoy this person seems disingenuous. Personally at this point you're making the game for yourselves and your ego, instead of the millions of players who have supported both your studio, and your productions for years and even decades. They even had the audacity to advertise otherwise. Its like you knew people wouldn't like it, and yet you did it anyway.

I also can't get over the amount of flashbacks, it was tiresome. The mechanic makes everything chaotic.

Additionally the new characters served no purpose narratively and were just bland. I couldn't care for a single one. With no development of them, it was just vanilla, and when they died, I mostly didn't care. The only character I liked was Lev. He was probably my favourite and the most interesting/well built.

By the end, I'd given up and just wanted to see the ending, but I really didn't care. I was exhausted from forcing myself to try and enjoy it. The magic that existed in the previous title was missing. The whole concept of story driven narrative was lost like the final season of GoT - this game ultimately forgot what it was supposed to be.

For me, I'd have enjoyed playing as Ellie and Joel at the start, feeling that magic between them both and reminiscing on the good times we had, pure nostalgia. The first part of the game could be Ellie working with Joel, Tommy, Jesse and Dina, doing missions to support Jackson, exploring the world, levelling up, crafting cool stuff and enjoying awesome encounters, saving survivors, clearing out clickers, just a nice introduction to the characters, their stories, the world and the mechanics. Then, Ellie and Joel on a great adventure. You then split off for whatever reason and now you're alone exploring a new area, maybe the scars or another group. You could save Joel and abby, work together to escape, and go back to Jackson or the wolf camp, she's a friend of yours but she could even become the love interest instead of Dina - this makes later situations harder to deal with.

At this point abby figures out who joel is, stuff could happen and he dies in Epic fashion that tears at Ellie. The revenge plot begins.

You team up with Tommy, Dina and Jesse who then work with you to find abby and kill her. This group gameplay brings a whole new dynamic. You could even direct them to do things, reward the player with cool functionality.

Later you meet Lev. This is the perfect time to drop ideas into your head about forgiveness. You build a relationship, working forward and surviving (the key mechanic is survival, problem solving ways out of impossible to exit rooms with puzzles, camping in abandoned areas and setting traps for clickers etc).

Eventually you find abby, fight, and you get this forgiveness narrative in the end. Perhaps Lev gets involved and begs you both to stop.

For me, executed properly, this sort of narrative would've been a much more rewarding experience. It can provoke conflicting emotions, happiness, mourning, anger, forgiveness, all of it and ultimately be an enjoyable game without upsetting the player and forcing them down a journey kicking and screaming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm so saddened by all of the negative, hateful reviews of this game.

The Last of Us 2 is probably one of, if not THE BEST GAME I've EVER played in my entire life (and I'm in my mid 30's).

    --Gameplay--
TLOU 2 takes everything good about the first game and combines it with everything that makes the Uncharted series of games so fun to play with heightened mobility and more streamlined controls.

There are more weapons with more customization options and more ways to get through combat in such a satisfying way. Snipe from a distance, shotgun blast up close, use smoke bombs and trip mines (my favorite) to really level the playing field against tough and satisfying opponents.

Everything that sucked (yes.. sucked) about TLOU 1 was removed from this game (using palettes to get Ellie across water, etc) and what's left is one of the most satisfying control and combat systems in a game I've ever played.

    --Story--
Here's where people REALLY go off the deep end in their hate for this game, which is both moronic and just overall deeply deeply sad.

Joel is NOT a hero, nor is he supposed to be the pinnacle of admiration. So many people are SO mad about Joel dying, and THAT'S THE POINT. You as the player are supposed to feel enraged at the brutal murder of Joel so that you play as Ellie with a burning, passionate hatred and unstoppable will to get to Abby.

When you get to that point, you feel triumphant in your quest. But then the game takes a MASTERFUL turn and flips the script. Some might say this is a trope, but mostly people are just angry and upset (and stupid) about being forced to view, feel, and understand the motivation behind the opposition.

Playing as Abby feels frustrating at first, but there's a glimmer of curiosity as we are plunged into her world and we hope to uncover some deeper understanding as to why Joel was murdered. It's something that is going through Ellie's mind the entire time we are hunting down Abby, and now Naughty Dog is finally giving us a taste of what those motivations are.

During the time we're playing as Abby, we see an entirely different and new side to the events that are unfolding in Seattle. We are introduced to a very human set of characters that were dehumanized in the eyes of Ellie because of their actions. We are given a rare opportunity to understand our enemy. By the end of Abby's Seattle adventure, we are (if you're not a totally brainless and heartless moron) actually ON HER SIDE!

Joel selfishly(!) murdered Abby's father, a man who wanted to bring a vaccine to the entire world and was ok with paying a very heavy price for that "victory." Maybe he deserved to die because he devalued the life of one person (Ellie) in favor of others, but these decisions aren't supposed to be easy. None of the decisions in this world/story are easy. Abby is fully justified in her pursuit of murdering Joel to get revenge, and we are exposed to her fragility and sensitivity (and aggression) throughout her half of the game. She could have sailed into the sunset with Owen but instead went back to save the life of the Seraphite children who saved HER life. The story is layered and nuanced in a way no video game narrative has ever felt (to me) in all my years of gaming.

The Last of Us 2 forces you to see beyond your own selfish, hatred, misguided motivation and understand the opposing views. Most people are upset with that (I think) because most people are just as selfish and fueled by anger and hatred as Joel and Ellie (and Abby).

At the end of the Seattle chapter of the game, Abby winds up sparing Ellie, leaving her to live with her haunted nightmares of Joel's murder and the fact that her life is "meaningless" because she didn't die when she was supposed to so she could save humanity. When Ellie decides she can't go on without her revenge, she selfishly leaves Dina and the perfect life they've cultivated for themselves so she can pursue her distorted view of justice.

At the end of the Santa Barbara chapter, Ellie winds up saving Abby's life so they can finally battle to the death. Right before Ellie gets her ultimate revenge, another image of Joel flashes in her head. This time, not one of him dying or as a bloody mess, but an encounter where she promised an attempt at forgiveness. Would killing Abby justify that? Ultimately, no. So she stops. The cycle of killing has to end, and she realizes she has to give up her selfish hatred in order to do what's "right."

The naysayers who are calling for Abby's death are completely MISSING THE POINT that Naughty Dog's excellent writers are trying to convey. Instead, Ellie returns home to an empty farm and (presumably) decides to go out and fulfill her promise to Joel of forgiveness.

Bravo to Naughty Dog and the entire voice acting team for such a wonderful story.

    F U to the haters

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It disappoints me that’s so many people have given this game such bad reviews. This game is incredibly well thought out. I loved the story because it wasn’t what I expected and every character had layers, instead of a linear personality. Having Joel die so soon was a shock, and I was angry at first, but I understood that’s the point! This event is what drives the entire story of the game and it’s supposed to make you feel upset. The aim of this game isn’t to make the player feel comfortable and to reminisce about the Joel and Ellie duo we all loved in the first game, it’s meant to make you feel unsafe and scared about what could be next. For a game to evoke these kind of emotions in the player just shows that it is more than just a game. They want you to experience it as the characters would, and let’s not forget the incredible graphics in this game! They worked so hard on every single little detail like the way Ellie’s backpack moves when she walks, the way thin ice breaks, the hand movements when Ellie plays the guitar, and my favourite, how the cables/ropes in the game move/are coiled. One thing I particularly loved, was how the cut scenes and game play seamlessly transition into one another, something the first game didn't have. I was engaged in the story from start to finish and I couldn't be happier with the result. Incredible game play, graphics and attention to detail! Expand

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
