Story - Despite what people are saying this is not a revenge story. It has some aspects of a revenge story line, but to call it that is simplistic at best. Ellie's part of this game is occurs mainly because of the scene between her and Joel on the porch after the party. This scene is her motivation more than Abby killing Joel. I think the Abby killing Joel in that manner was more for the player, and making the player want revenge. Ellie also has a happy ending despite what you might think. In the last scene at the farm she shows no emotion to the farm being empty because she knew it was. Quite a bit of time had passed between her last fight with Abby and that scene and she is fully healed an appears to be wearing the bracelet Dina gave her. She is actually coming from Jackson in that scene and has already made up with Dina by that point.
Joel and Tommy trusting the WLF group was not bad writing. Four years had passed between the first game and this one. They had been spending much of that time bringing people into the community. They had no reason to mistrust a group of kids that are not much older than Ellie.
Abby's story was mostly about the fact that killing Joel did not bring her peace or closure. Her story was much the same as Joel's story from part 1. Yes you can call this lazy writing, but the writers were trying to make us feel some empathy for her.
Graphics - Yeah...I think pretty much everyone agrees this is the best looking game on the PS4.
New Characters - All the new characters were great. Some the of WLFs were a little one dimensional, but they really seemed to flesh out Dina and Jesse, and of course Abby.
Character Development - Both main characters, Ellie and Abby, had great character development. I don't feel like ND undid anything from the first game in terms of Ellie's character. I do not believe they destroyed Joel's character or made him the villain. Ellie's development is really hard to get until the scene on the porch and it was brilliant for ND to put that scene near the end of the game.

    Neutral
Game play - The game play was pretty similar to part 1 with some added mechanics. i put it in neutral because there was nothing really groundbreaking here. I did like the fact they found a way to have you play the guitar with a controller though.

    Problematic
Story Structure -The structure of the story was a little problematic because there were flashbacks and the same story told from two different viewpoints. You can die in some of the flashbacks. For example when you go off as Ellie with Joel to find guitar strings you can die. Having Abby's 3 days come after Ellie's 3 days has a similar issue where you can die as Abby during this time even though you know she ends up at the theater. There could also be an issue with the way Lev gets up onto the balcony of the theater as Ellie could technically leave a bomb trap at the top of that ladder. I don't know if that changes anything if you do this, but either way if it's ignored there is an issue and if Lev gets blown up there is an issue. I guess Lev could see it and detonate it without getting hurt. It may have better to play day 1 as Ellie then day 1 and Abby and so forth. I do not believe playing Abby's part first would have been the correct way to go though.

Tommy - I don't really like where Tommy ended in this. It would have been nice to see if he was able to move on or not.

Abby killing Joel - I put this in the problematic because I think ND may have underestimated how much people would hate her for killing Joel especially the way it was done. This seemed to leave a lot of people in the mindset that they could never like or feel empathy for her. I don't know if this was a mistake, but since the second half of the game is set up to try and make you feel empathy for her I have to believe ND believed that people would despite her killing Joel, and that just didn't happen for some people because they their mind was just made up to hate her no matter what for killing Joel. Since the game is set up this way it seems to me ND did make a mistake here in not recognizing just how beloved Joel is. Of course they have stated the game would be divisive, but to me the 2nd half of the game contradicts that as they obviously were trying to get the player to sympathize with Abby.

i gave the game 10/10 though because despite not being perfect it is still masterpiece. The story really sticks with you and I liked playing as Abby and I liked the choices they made on the characters and while I think the story would work better if it was structured differently it doesn't take away from the fact that the story was brilliant.

Whether or not you like how the events play out in The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog sticks to their guns. They tell an important and impactful narrative through character dialogue, world design, and gameplay. It marries each aspect of the game together, aspects, that set the bar for the games industry. The animations of each character, every drop of rain, shard of glass, pustule of an infected, feels meticulously hand-crafted. The visuals are truly mind boggling as to how humans were able to achieve this in a video game. It's a story and experience I'll never forget.

They take the characters they created within the first game and throw them to the side, and try to explain their story (which shouldnt happen in the first place you shouldnt need to explain your own story for yourself). They kill Joel within the first hour, and then you have to immediately play as his killer as well as multiple times throughout the story. Abby is completely unlikable as she was the one that killed a beloved character and the game devs attempt to humanize her in a complete failure. The game doesnt go above and beyond from the first game in terms of gameplay and it goes wayyyyy down in story. Expand

This game is art in its brutality.

    Pros:
Gameplay. The game improved upon the first in almost every way. Combat is more fluid with dodging, diving, improved animations and fluidity of movement, and more fun thanks to some fun new weapons like bomb arrows. Stealth is more fun than ever thanks to additions like going prone, crafting silencers, enemy dogs (which make the stealth harder, but the extra challenge adds more fun), hiding in grass of varying heights, improved communication and teamwork between enemies, and more.
Writing. The writing itself is great, whether you agree with the overall story or not. Individual conversations and lines are great, even if the occurrences of fun conversations are fewer and further between. The mid-combat dialogue feels more natural (although it's still peppered with the scripted "I think I saw something. > Go check it out, I'll watch your back") and enemies react better to my actions.
Visuals: This game looks amazing. The animations in particular are top-notch, some of the (if not THE) best in the industry.
Story: Great, but definitely not for everyone. People angry about Joel's death are upset *because that's how you're supposed to feel about it.* You're supposed to be outraged. But Naughty Dog made the mistake of thinking people could contextualize their anger within the game like rational beings instead of at the developers. The story is brutal. It's hard to experience. But it's very well-made. You're *supposed* to be angry and confused when you have to play as Abby. The whole point is that it shines a light on how we view Joel as this hero when he *wasn't.* The cycle of revenge was portrayed extremely well in this story. "Uhh, but she didn't get revenge!" Yea the whole point was that Ellie lost herself when she lost Joel, and Abby lost herself when she lost Jerry (and almost lost herself again later when she lost her friends). People who missed this didn't listen to Joel's song, "If I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself." Letting go and putting an end to the cycle was the only way to truly move on and find themselves again. It was a beautiful message that was beautifully told.

    Cons:
Gameplay: A hell-bent revenge mission doesn't seem as realistic when I'm stopping to pick up notes constantly. Very small detail, but something I couldn't help but chuckle at. As far as difficulty, even on Survivor I found that I had a lot of stuff to spare at most times. I play fairly stealthily, meaning not lots of molotovs or bombs, which contributes to this, but still. I feel like a good way to make resources feel scarcer would be capping our carried resources at 2 instead of 3 on higher difficulties.
Writing: I personally don't understand the "Joel would never say his name" complaint, but I'll leave that here since it's such a common complaint and one that may be reasonable. Personally, I feel as though he followed Tommy's lead (and Tommy has been living in Jackson much longer so he's likely softer).
Visuals: idk there were a couple of visual bugs that were funny? No real complaints here.
Story: Abby's tale should have lined up better with Ellie's, where we're playing the other side of the story, but that would have been difficult considering she was the only enemy in those areas of the game (not the Seraphites). I just was excited to go through and see the effects of Ellie's actions from her point of view and we don't really get that until the aquarium on Day 3. The Seraphites seemed to contradict a lot of what Naughty Dog accomplished with the WLF. The WLF broke the trope of being the generic nameless enemies. They may have seemed pure evil after the events early in the game, but we see that's not the case later on when we get to play as Abby and see the amazing communities they've established. They're just like Jackson. The Seraphites are just evil, and presented as such at every turn. They're a violent, fanatical cult without any positive contributions to the world, and they're not even doing it out of desperation to survive like villains from the first game. They're just *evil* and it's so out of place within the rest of the game.

Coming off the first game, there was almost no way a sequel could live up to it and satisfy everyone. Some people think this means they shouldn't have made it, and that's one argument to be made. People say Star Wars should have been left alone, but each new movie deserves to be judged on its own merits, not just "the originals were amazing and we should've let it die with dignity." Same goes for this. You can think the original is better. But rating this game anything below like a 6 shows you're not truly critiquing the game, you're just ranting.

This game introduced 3 new groups trying to strive, and all 3 are willing to go on the gruesome path to secure their survival. People don't die heroes in this world, people are seeking revenge for even the smallest things, people are trying to protect what they love the most. It's the most human representation of what would happen if an actual apocalypse took over. The focus here is not a cure, it's the relations and acts characters have to go through to secure their survival.
The characters have some dumb decisions sometimes, but in the end, this game is trying to make you see the two sides of the coin: Ellie and Abby. You get to play as both of them, and it's awesome to see all perspectives. The plot keep moving at a slow pace, and there's a chapter who could be completely deleted because it felt dragged, but in the final showdown, it has a clear message. This game is about consequences. It's not epic, it's not pretty, it's not happy. It's tangible and human. Still, I did miss some strong supporting characters like in the first one. We don't get an Henry or a Bill here, and the new characters are likable at best. Not good, not bad either, I didn't just developed a strong connection with them, but they serve and move the story just fine. Hence my 9. Great experience, dont fall on the hate wagon, people are losing it because one narrative choice that had to happen sooner or later. This is a story about consequences, and it comes to all our beloved characters. People in this world don't get to escape their actions.
