The mechanics are okay but feel like a leftover from the original with minor upgrades like jumping which frankly isn’t that useful or much of a development considering games have involved ‘jumping’ for years.

The graphics are beautiful. The scenery is well depicted and animation is smooth.

However, there are two areas that kill the experience. The linear ‘no choice’ gameplay. You don’t make any moral choices, nothing impacts outcomes. Whatever you do has no effect on the story or whichever character you are playing. This game deserves to be an open world epic in the style of the Witcher. If you wanted to make people think about actions and consequences you should have been able to make moralistic choices and seen a variety of outcomes. Ideally, you should have been able to play as a variety of characters in a big open world and seen how their stories intertwined with multiple endings that are created by your choices. Instead we are bludgeoned over the head with a needlessly nihilistic story that allows the player only to react to choices made by the designer.

The representation with the game is a bold choice but poorly handled. It feels like a checklist of minority groups and therefore tokenism. The violence and sexual scenes add nothing but provocation to less open minded people and they devalue the experience as a whole. Overall, it’s a AAA game with mechanics from 2014 and a storyline that gives players no choice but to be preached at rather than organically evolve their own morality. In short it’s a $15 one time experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and graphics are the only thing I will give any points towards. The fact that they bastardize and retcon the story from TLOU1 in INEXCUSABLE. Characters completely forget the knowledge they display in the first game, then through plot induced stupidity, act completely out of character. Both Ellie and Joel are victims of this heinous betrayal of common sense.

At no point did i feel sympathy towards Abby and every time I had to play as her I rushed as much as possible to get to Ellie, even though she continues to do more and more out of character actions.

For a game that constantly beats the concept of "REVENGE/MURDER IS BAD" and then FORCES you to murder people without any choice is not excusable.

On top of it, the game trailers and promises from the dev's are NO WHERE to be found. We were told that you would not have to harm an animal yet, you kills dogs like they were fodder. Scenes showing Joel were ripped out of the game and replaced with another disposable male character (Jesse) whom also gets killed off.

While the gameplay is fun, the story makes the game a complete chore. If you skip the cut scenes and any lore, it makes the game even worse and you are constantly reminded of the garbage you are playing.

After undestanding the real meaning of the game you begin to realise that this game is actually a masterpiece. Still think there was no need to play so much time with Abby, but the conclusion is really great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So listen to me to clarify what is happening. Although I didn't like the end of the game either, the rest of the game is a masterpiece. The story is different. It's a story of revenge and it gives you everything in a brutally violent way. Wouldn't it be boring to be like the previous one? Again, it's not easy to make a game like the first one. For those who were also did not like what happened and Ellie got angry, something important had to be done to make the game exist. So those of you who want to buy it keep in mind that the gameplay, although similar to the previous one, is very good, in terms of sound and graphics and the story and the whole theme of the game is a little darker so don't expect most moments to be happy. .

Also (spoiler) if you think about it those who say that the end of the game does not make sense and that it cancels everything that Ellie did and in the first what happened? They intended to go to the Fireflies and hand over Ellie for treatment, but this did not happen.

Also, those of you who ask about whether Multiplayer is worth it, you don't get the last of us for the multiplayer mode, but for the campaign.

I think the expectations destroyed the rating of the game. And the thing is that if you do not like the story doesn't mean that the game is trash and doesn't mean it deserves 3.9 rating

It's been almost a week after finishing the game and I'm still devastated and traumatized. Crying in random moments.
The Last Of Us was one of my favourite games. They should have left the title alone? Idk. It had a perfect ending. Could have been so much better even with the same story but some changes in the way things were presented or happened.

The first half I was definitely on Joel's and Elly's side, but this all changes after discovering the past of Abby and her family and friends. "There are two sides of a coin" never felt so apt.

The only thing I don't enjoy was, that the game often felt long, it took too much time for the essential story.

I’m sure the vast majority have seen the leaks or have had it spoiled for them by now, and straight away I want to say, do not let these spoilers steer you away from playing this game. This game has to be played to properly appreciate this work of art.
The story is a gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, and devastating journey that after 25 hours of playing, I didn’t want it to end. The structure of this story is a complex and ambitious approach from Neil Druckmann and co in attempting to take the player on a spiritual journey across the world of TLOU with our characters. Naughty Dog created a story that would continuously test the players emotions throughout the entirety of the game, and often leave the player feeling completely torn between what is right and wrong, whether they agree with the actions of a character, or even to an extent, making the player themselves question their own beliefs and emotions and impose guilt on them for their actions in a video game. Naughty Dog have perfected the art of putting the player into the characters shoes. You are Ellie. You are setting out on this seemingly blood-searching mission of revenge.

The games story is told in many ways. One of these ways is the incredibly emotional and soul-destroying flashbacks to previous events throughout the characters life. These flashbacks perfectly tell the story of the characters you encounter throughout the game and provide perfect understanding as to why they feel and act the way they do. Often the game would leave you wondering, what happened there? Why is this character acting like that? How did this character reach this position? And well, the flashbacks in this game perfectly explain every bit of that. Admittedly, some flashbacks can often be seen to be in the wrong place in terms of the timeline of the game. Some flashbacks may have had a greater impact if they were told in a different order, however this does not take away the fact that ND’s use of flashbacks is a spectacular achievement. These sequences are an incredible nod back to the previous game, which anyone who played and loved the first game are happy to see and hear.

Naughty Dog have once again mastered the art of fast paced sequences that leave the player on the edge of their seat, and yet again perfected those slower, more emotional moments of bonding and growth between the characters. These are those special gaming moments that stay with you long after you have completed this game.

The story of The Last of Us Part 2 is a complicated emotional and spiritual journey told by a range of extensive storytelling and structural devices which can cause this game to be seen as messy. However, the sheer complexity of the story Neil Druckmann is trying to tell has to be approached with an open mind. Let the story play out, let Naughty Dog take you on this path they have created for us to discover and follow. This game is not your standard video game story. This is the sort of story you would expect to see in a classic novel or a blockbuster movie, this is not a simple story of revenge, this is not what you expect it to be. Just to quote the words of Girlfriend Reviews on YouTube, the plot and the story are two completely different things. The plot is the main idea of where the game will take you and what it will follow throughout. The story however is each individual character’s journey along the way and how we reach the ultimate plot goal. Simply put, on the surface the plot may be seen as simple, however the story is the complex artistic creation that lays underneath, and that is the part that should be truly appreciated across the entire gaming community.
This is a story of redemption, soul searching and the everlasting cycle of violence and where violence and obsession leads you. This game was designed to be uncomfortable to play, this isn’t just your standard video game, this is a story and Naughty Dog wants you to listen. This game will teach you lessons, and if by the end of it you haven’t learn anything, then you haven’t beaten the game, the game has beaten you.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a masterpiece. Albeit does have its flaws just like any other story may have, this game is an outstanding achievement in both design and storytelling like no other we have seen on this generation. This game will change the way you think and will completely alter your perceptions of any other game you will ever play. The Last of Us Part 2 is a must play, there is no other way about it. Don’t just take my word for it, play it for yourself and see.
One thing is for sure, the PlayStation 4 is signing off in style.
To Naughty Dog, Sony and all who worked on this game: Thank you. The Last of Us Part 2 (2020), Final Score: 9.7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us's strength was derived primarily from the relationship forged between Ellie and Joel; everything else was secondary. Somehow, TLOU Part 2 seems astoundingly unaware of this. Joel's death, although potentially a fine decision either later in the game or in a subsequent sequel, was a poor choice that immediately massively negatively impacted the game. Having to play as Abby during the first few hours, with it being very clear that she was going to kill Joel, was a devastatingly bad move, and I found myself letting her get caught by the zombies in a hopeless bid to spare Joel.

Character development was disappointingly poor. Ellie became a character that, by the end, I actually hated more than Abby. Her disregard for the welfare of her friends and her girlfriend paints a character who is deeply selfish, psychopathic, and not fun to play as: when I play a game, I don't want to feel like a bad person. I didn't want to make the decisions the game forced me to make, and when the game finally ended, after several false stops, I was left feeling desolate and depressed, with the one silver lining being that it was finally over. For the first time in my life i immediately uninstalled the game, gave my dog a hug, and traded the game in. I had no desire to play this game again, given how it made me feel.

The game certainly isn't all bad; indeed there are some fantastic parts (such as the level set in the outbreak 'ground zero'), the score works very well, and fine detail is great (such as the weapon modification animations), however the negatives outshine the positives. Dialogue was weak, with too much spoken explicitly and too little relying on nuance, and many things that occurred seemed to have been written just so the story could continue in the direction of the ending the writers wanted. Different parts feel disjointed, much of it feels disorganised, and some parts are far too long and boring. The degree of graphic violence was genuinely shocking, exhausting and entirely unneccessary, and I found myself having to look away from quite a few parts (I felt sorry for the animators). Perhaps most importantly, having to play the game as a character you are inevitably going to have little rapport with due to her actions in the first few hours was a gamble that did not pay off. Although I ended up favouring Abby, it wasn't because I felt sorry for her per se, but rather because I hated her just a little bit less than the monster Ellie had become.
