The Last of Us was my favorite game for the better part of a decade. However modest a title that is, in the time between its release and the release of The Last of Us Part II, it was only ever truly challenged by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I wondered for a long time if there would ever be a sequel, all while simultaneously satisfied with the story that The Last of Us told; a powerful, moving, and evocative story filled with some of the best character development I've ever seen, a heart-wrenching climax complete with a moral dilemma to truly fracture the soul, and an ending that managed to strike the perfect balance of closure and invitation for continuation. As if that wasn't enough though, the Left Behind DLC was equally moving; a worthy counterpart and beautiful supplement to what was - in total - nothing short of a narrative masterpiece almost by an objective standard.

When Naughty Dog announced that it was making The Last of Us Part II, the Internet was suddenly ablaze with rumors, speculation, and fan theory. So many were excited to see what the writers had in store for the characters we'd come to love so dearly. I was equally excited, but also wary for the sake of the IP. The studio did everything they could to satisfy fans starving for more information: teaser trailers, cinematics, sample gameplay, and more. The community surrounding this IP not only loved it, but they also trusted the studio's writers to do it justice; a real rarity and welcome experience in the increasingly tumultuous and predatory industry that is AAA video game development. There was deep, unified support for one of the few good remaining studios, and it was all but certain that lightning would strike twice.

Only months prior to one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history, the Internet was once again ablaze. Only this time, it was bad news. Headlines appeared about major leaks and spoilers. Apparently, conflict within the studio had come to a breaking point and now spilled over into the public. Out of love for the IP, I went into an almost ridiculous state of Internet self-quarantine. I avoided any whisper about The Last of Us Part II for months. I had waited years for this game and I was determined to have a genuine gratifying experience playing it. I binged the game in all my hours of free time until I finished it last night...

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever been so personally disappointing to me as has The Last of Us Part II.

No sequel or continuation - movie, book, video game or otherwise - has ever retroactively made me think so much less of the original.

I wish I could un-play The Last of Us Part II and forget it ever existed. At least then I would still love the beautiful story that was The Last of Us. Am I being melodramatic? Probably. It's only a game... but that's just it. It didn't used to be. At least not for me.

My advice may sound discordant, but there are reasons for it. If you love The Last of Us, do not play The Last of Us Part II. Don't stop there though. If you love The Last of Us, do not read, watch, or otherwise seek out anything about what happens in The Last of Us Part II. However, if you find this to be undoable, if you cannot resist and you must know the story, then you must actually play the game (ideally only once the price has bottomed out) and do so without spoiling any part of it for yourself beforehand. This is why, as much as I want to vent, I haven't written anything about the game's contents here. I can do that separately. This game is a betrayal of the story and the characters you love, by the developer that gave them to you seven years ago. All I can say is I don't see myself buying another game written or directed by Neil Druckmann or any of the writers for the Last of Us Part II. In fact, if I didn't know better I would ask who he stole The Last of Us from. The more I reflect on what transpires in The Last of Us Part II, the more it would seem that its predecessor might have just been a beautiful fluke; lightning in a bottle.

Everything about The Last of Us Part II other than the story ranges from good to amazing. The developers should be proud. Unfortunately, these things can't save a game that hinges entirely on its narrative when that narrative is so utterly broken that it disrespects what made the IP so beautiful in the first place.

If this isn't enough to convince you to completely ignore this game's existence, then I would encourage you to listen to any other spoiler-free player reviews you can find from people who were in your position before playing the game. The established critics are predictably out of touch. There is no "high art" aspect to this game, not even if you squint and turn your head sideways. If you love The Last of Us then this game is not worth playing. If you love The Last of Us, then The Last of Us still has no part two.

Such a great game! It's basically a continuation of the first game. A second playthrough makes it even better as you get to understand pieces of the game that make more sense once you finish the story.

Extremely overhated game. I can understand that there were some minor narrative problems but the main issue is that People is angry because the game aint what they wanted and not neccesarily a bad game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part II is brave. And it does not risk in vain. The game starts with the usual magnificent perspective, that of Joel and Ellie, the protagonists of the first chapter. From the graphics, to the shooting system, to the ruined setting that highlights the beauty of nature, every clash is breathtaking, every twist unpredictable, the certain motivation is perfectly conveyed by Naughty Dog, with that death of Joel that is not at all dignified, it's not what we would have liked, but this is the strong point of the scene. We're angry at everyone and everything and we have the strength to move on. But when Abby enters the theater, then everything changes. We go over to the side of a character who pushes us to empathise. If the aim had been to make us love or almost love that character, then the story would have had to unfold in a different way: a comfortable pretty girl, a story from the beginning that leads us to the not-so-brutal killing of Joel. However, The last of us is an uncomfortable product: not by what we want, it doesn't seek ephemeral success, but transcends the game dimension making Abby's one (big) parenthesis to open up another perspective. So that we can question ourselves, without distinguishing right from wrong. At the end of this journey the loss of the two fingers is very heavy for Ellie: on the one hand it's negative, because she abandons the guitar and Joel, on the other side of the coin however (and this is the recurring theme) abandoning Joel means to forgive him (true founding theme of the adventure) and go on. Towards a new light. And also Abby is looking for a new light, together with Lev and after completing his journey of redemption.

The last of us part 2 in short is a product that transcends consumerism, and even if not the poignant narrative beauty of the first, manages to reach extraordinary emotional heights, almost a Picasso painting with a fourth dimension in the first battle between Abby and Ellie.

It's uncomfortable, and devastating. It's not what the boorish vulgar, superficial consumer wanted, but an intimate transcription of how things went after the first, the only way they could go, as if they had written themselves. Making this The last of us Part II is the perfect complementary PART of the first chapter, and it is a title that paints in a shocking way, opening a new level of depth in the videogame world, a glimpse of both inner and outer reality. This work is and will remain great precisely because it has been evaluated in a divisive way, there are those who love it and those who hate it, but it leaves no one indifferent. (free version) H

Not here to argue over people’s twisted sensitivity over strong female characters, representation of different body types and orientations, and the revenge story that ND decided to tell. Tragedy is a method of story telling, and if that makes you uncomfortable then that is part of the reaction Tragedies will have on some, but there is a message. If you are blind to that and simply just lean towards anger and rage then that’s on you and your immaturity on the topic. I don't mean you have to be happy by the tragedies that do happen, it's ok to be upset, sad, or even mad when these events happen. However, if your reaction is to troll, send death threats to people who worked on the game, discriminate and attack the different shapes of women and other things that this game brings up then that reaction and behavior is disgusting. Great game in terms of story and gameplay. If you like the first one, then you will have a blast with this. Expand

If anything, the impassioned negative reception from many who never even played shows how deeply this game cut to the core.

It's a good game, but not a TLOU.
-This is terrible writen, there's alot of contradictions and plays with fake scenes that we're showned in the trailers so you can earn more money.
-It's a waste of potential, 'cuz the graphics, mechanics, and flashbacks are well maded, it's a shame, cuz with the same resourses, and the same characters you've could done a well MADED WRITEN story.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
