After the first game and playing as Joel through all the struggles and waiting 7 years to do it again, to not get the chance to again was a disappointment but to have his death within the first hour was even worse. Feeling emotionally flat while playing the game afterwards. Setting out as Ellie for revenge, this is a big difference to the Ellie from the first game the spark and joy is gone from her outlook on life, Rage and brutality replace them. Going through the story I enjoyed a lot of the new features, nothing better than a silencer headshot. Stalkers are a much better enemies and always felt anxious when encountering them. Exploring is great and finding all the collectibles of how people are living through the outbreak are intriguing and I do like the Dina and Ellie interactions within the open world, which when your playing day 1 in Seattle are amazing. Flashbacks with Ellie and Joel hit home just how much you miss playing as them and bring the first game vibes back. Seeing the heartbreak when Joel finally confesses what he did in the previous game and Ellie reaction and her leaving Joel. On the flip side when you flip to playing as Abby - Joel’s killer, the flashback seem to drag and this is where the game pacing lags abit. I get what naughty dog was trying to do with Abby, anyone who has had their dad killed would of course want revenge on the person. But we had already played through a 20+ hour game as Joel connected to the character waited 7 years to play as him again and to have him killed and then to play as his killer, personally not a fan and I couldn’t connect to her as a character and all of her friends are throw away characters and forgettable and I had no attachment to them at all. Maybe if this game was all around Abby and then maybe Part 3 was the Ellie/Abby face off there could’ve been abit more investment with Abby side of things. But personally I never was fully invested and was just trying to get through to where we had left Ellie. What I will say about Abby part of the game is it definitely has the bigger standout moments. The ratking boss fight in the hospital a favourite, The climb up the building and crane, dodging tommy sniper rounds, fleeing through the forest with only your melee attacks against stalkers and the fight and flee of the Scars island while burning are all standout exciting moments. Ellie has some great campaign moments too (the first encounter with the scars a personally favourite, hearing those whistles for the first time) Abby moments standout more and are more memorable which the developers maybe have Abby these better moments so people could enjoy playing as the character more. Lev I felt was thrown in to show a compassion side to Abby but this connection felt forced and didn’t really have enough time to develop a connection with them the same way Joel and Ellie in the first game. Then we play as Abby fighting Ellie, and in this part I hated it I just wanted to get through it as quickly as I could didn’t enjoy it one bit. Then we get to the cutscene and when Abby holds a knife to pregnant Dina and Ellie says she’s pregnant and Abby response is “Good” and is about to slit her throat before Lev stops her. This shows that Abby is still a monster and hasn’t change, I get she wants revenge for her friends and Owen and Ellie had killed Mel who was pregnant as well. But at least Ellie felt physical sick from her actions and was shaking, Abby was going to enjoy killing Dina, both Abby and Ellie could both be consider monsters with their brutality but at least Ellie was likeable. Then Ellie goes for revenge one last time leaving her life behind and goes through the rattlers picking up a great silenced machine gun, finds Abby tortured and has one final brutally battle against her, I personally didn’t care if Abby lived or die, I was over it the story had drained me and I was done. The first game I could pick up and replay again and again. This game I’m not sure if I could commit to playing again no matter how go the gameplay is, when the story is as depressing and unenjoyable id rather play something else for minding numbing gameplay goodness. This game is one you have to play to make up your own mind I can see why people will love it, but I’d highly recommend waiting until the price drops before committing to it, in case you end up hating it. All I can say is The last of us part 3 will be interesting if they ever make one. Expand

I have never been that frustrated from the story, demotivated and several times asking myself if I really would like to continue playing. It completely ruined my experience from the game I was hugely waiting for. It is the first game where I in some cruel way enjoyed when character I was playing died. And several times just stoped playing and waiting until her death. Definitely not going to pre-purchase any other sequel (if there is any) and will wait for user reviews first. Expand

I loved the first game with its wonderful characters and well told story, you really felt something when important characters died because they were well written and it was believable, on the other hand tlou2 says screw that it takes a whole different direction. If you truly want to play a masterpiece I suggest you skip this one and get the first game, now thats a great game to play.

In my first 9 hrs as I travel to Seattle i was so sad. I miss Joel. I dont like Dina to be with me. I want Joel. Why did you kill Joel, the main character??? My perspective at that point was really cloudy. But after finishing the whole game i saw what Naughty Dog did and it was brave, bold, and (for me) brilliant. I have never been immersed this much in a game. This was the first time that after 9 days of finishing the game i was still sad. I cant play other games. I was so depressed. This game is so powerful. Moving af.

Other factors such as gameplay, sound, visuals. Totally 10/10. There are just some things that i didnt so like for me overall the game is a 9/10.

This game shook me to the core and left me emotionally wrecked by the time I completed the story; Naughty Dog has done a great job of getting the player invested in the game and its characters and has made a valiant effort in exploring parallel narratives that force you to empathise with both perspectives of the story so far. The gameplay, albeit very similar to the original game, has vastly improved in fluidity, animations, and does a great job of providing the player options to explore, take multiple routes, and discover the world around them in a much more natural manner (compared to the prequel). The combat is also an impressive step up from the first game; each encounter flawlessly creates an atmosphere of tension and fear that I haven't felt to such a degree in games I've played before. The stealth system has improved, the player has more freedom of movement, and weapon customizations and character upgrades allow you to choose which playstyle suits you best. Oh, and need I mention the graphics?

But more about the story - as aforementioned I thoroughly enjoyed it, it does a great job at forcing the player to reflect on their decisions and look at the conflict from various perspectives. Without spoiling too much: halfway through the game, there is a somewhat sudden shift to a parallel narrative that was taking place throughout your playthrough up till that point. This part of the game is what is a turn off for many players, as they find the jump too jarring and out of place. Although I disagree, I do see where they're coming from and do acknowledge the slight pacing issues that are a consequence of this twist. There is also a certain fight sequence right before the epilogue of the game which didn't quite sit right with me, but I can't say much without spoiling the story.

Overall, I think this game is nothing short of a masterpiece, and much like the prequel is a giant leap forward for storytelling in video games. The best advice I can give you is to go in with an open mind, and you'll certainly love it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface this by saying I adore the first game. Easily in my top 5 games of all time. Which probably means I'm being super harsh on this. Which I am. I loved it, but it felt like a disappointment compared to the first game. Most importantly being, I didn't end up really empathising with Abby. I purposely died as her a few times just because I care way more about Joel and Ellie. Even at the end of the game, whilst liking Abby way more than I originally did, I wanted her to die. I **** loved Joel, and to barely have him in this game sucks. Although that does mean on the rare occasions we did see him, it felt nice and emotional. I get what they were trying to do - I really do. Hey look, that **** that you hated at the start is a person too! And Joel killed her dad! Feel sorry for her! But I just couldn't. Certainly not on the level they wanted me to. In fact, I felt like pretty much every new character we met I just didn't care about. Apart from maybe Owen - I thought he was written nicely. I think the way the game is played is one of the reasons why. In the first game you're Joel and Ellie - bantering throughout. Really helped build up their relationship with fun, witty dialogue. But in this, you're mostly playing as either Ellie or Abby. There are some segments where you're with Jesse, or Dina, or Lev, but they're few and far between. The first game had dialogue that was properly funny too, and the entire game felt like whilst this was a horrible world, there were moments of beauty and hope. This is just bleak, followed by bleak. Skill Up's review compared the tone and characters to the DCU, which I totally agree with. The characters in the first game had heart and character, but in this everyone is the same and just feel a little off.

Graphics, gameplay, all top notch. Super tense, super atmospheric, and really enjoyed it. Zero complaints there, although I am surprised they teased an open world section so early on in the game only for that to be it. I feel like a semi-open world could work pretty well in TLOU if implemented right. New enemies - I get it, but it just felt like a classic sequel move. We need new **** It felt almost anti-lore in the fact we didn't see these infected in the first game, but now here they are. Probably a minor criticism there, as how else are they meant to make a sequel? I would actually say the gameplay sections felt a little too long in places. You would take out a lot of people, only for there to be even more enemies just around the corner. This meant I was a little afraid to use bullets and other consumables as I had no idea if there would be any scavenging later on. I barely used bombs and molotovs. Don't even think I used a smoke grenade once. Which leads me onto:

Pacing. It was completely **** It just felt all over the place, across the entire game. It felt really unfocused. Playing as Ellie for three days only to then have to play as Abby for the same three days, knowing you're not going to find out what happens at the theatre felt like a big **** you. I also felt that Joel dying so early on just ruined the Abby segments as, guess what, I **** hated her. Then the end. My word. I thought California was a real nice change of scenery but at this point you think the game should be over - so it went on for too long. And we meet yet another faction - the Rattlers. What was their deal - slave labour? Was that it? We'd already suddenly met the Wolves and the Scars (which felt a little tacked on for my liking) and then with what, an hour of the game left, let's bring in another. *shrug*

I think my main criticism though is that even though I wasn't overly keen on Abby or her story, it just felt like a lot of things in the story missed the mark. Ellie torturing whoever it was - didn't care for it. I was told this game was super brutal and violent but the camera is on her face the entire time. And she hits her what, three times? Big woop. I hit normal enemies more than that. The sections where you're with the dog (Alice) only to then realise you killed it - again, just didn't care. If Alice doesn't get killed, Ellie does. Again, I completely get what the goal was, it just didn't impact me in the way it should've done.

I read nothing about the game going into it but obviously had heard of the whole scary trans thing. Assumed it was Abby the entire time as she was built like a **** brick **** house (which was weird, but whatever). Obviously you learn towards the end that Lev was a wife or something - but it completely passed me by that he was a she. So no idea what the manbabies online are moaning about. If anything the game didn't talk about it enough.

So there we go. I give it a solid 8/10. I reckon if I hadn't played the first game I would like this way more.

This part has nothing to do with the first part. it's humiliating for us players because we didn't expect it like that at all. We have to play the killer of our favorite player who has never been introduced and are forced to feel empathy even though we hate her all the time. Look after playing the game at first i didn't like it so much because it killed Joel BUT after understanding the meaning of the game which is to learn to leave your past behind and its also about forgiveness and its shows that the girl who killed Joel didn't find her inner peace after killing him she found it when she saved the life of the two kids and Ellie found it when she finally let Joel rest and moved on by letting Abby go. Abby lost a lot and so did Ellie, Abby lost her father and Ellie Joel Abby lost all her friends and Ellie lost most of her friends her relationship and two of her fingers only because it took her more time to learn to forgive it is not a perfect game but it is still a masterpiece and a game that has a lot of messages coming through it Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the first game more than this one, but I still think it is a great game.

TL;DR: The game gives people a lot of reasons to hate it, but I think if you can push through the feelings some of the game events and features may spark at first, you'll end up enjoying it a lot.

Where most people hated the story, I felt the game did a good job at making me keep going. Whereas some of the characters' actions are not rational at times, they are certainly human. And I think this is what the game excels at, making the characters feel human.

I think "The Death" was a good fit to the story to remind the player of how brutal and unforgiving the Last of Us world is. Once again touching on the subject of humanity, even though gameplay may depict them as superhuman killing machines with infalible instincts, the characters are as mortal and prone to error as any other human being.

Other complaints talk about the game trying to make us see Ellie as the villain, but I never really saw it that way. Sure, she murders a lot of people, but you can clearly see her actions taking a toll on her, even though her desire for revenge keeps her moving forward. By the end of the game, you possibly do not condone of her actions, but it is easy to understand what drives them if you step out of your own shoes and into hers. You want her to be smarter and more rational, but you really can't expect her to be, given all she's been through.

Now, as for the game trying to make you see the villain as a not-so-evil person by making you play as her, I don't think that happened for me either, I found it impossible to sympathize with her, but that didn't make the game or the story less enjoyable for me. In fact, I found her gameplay so engaging, I found myself not caring who I was playing as for most of her storyline. If you are able to ignore your initial disgust from playing as the villain, you can see that this part of the game has incredible level design with a lot of good encounters (including a high-adrenaline boss fight). And even if the game does try to reduce your hatred for this character, you can choose to not do that and simply see this part of the game as the story told from the POV of the villain.

The game does drag on for a little long and at the end you find yourself feeling a bit like the characters, tired and wanting to stop, but with the need to see everything through. Which is why I appreciate the developers keeping the (in my opinion much needed) final chapter somewhat short.

Finally, as for the game pushing for a "political agenda" (not that there is anything wrong with that, in my opinion), I tend to disagree. Ellie is a lesbian (which we already knew from the DLC to the first game) and there is a transgender character. That's about it. I personally don't think it is forced or that it affects the game quality in the slightest.
