Commentary is a nice refresher because it is just some random guy giving you tips or critiquing your on your game, almost like you are playing with someone in real life. I have run into screen tearing issues and reduced FPS especially when having three other AI "playing" along side you. Once you turn them off, I have not had issues since. The general game is solid and I really enjoy the putting aspect of the game which takes a little practice to get a hang of (couple of rounds should do it). Overall, there is such a large potential of courses to play based on the community being able to create courses and constant updates from the developers that this game has the potential for a long life. I have yet to try course editor or multiplayer (I don't, however, like the idea of asynchronous mutliplayer which I hope they fix that at some point once the game becomes more optimized). If this game gets synchronous multiplayer with 4 people, I would change my review to a 10. I was skeptical at first whether or not to buy this game based on the so-called "critic" reviews but I am really happy I did. The game is not perfect by any means but every single round of golf I have played so far has been enjoyable. If you want to level up your character, get the best gear, optimize your golfer to look exactly like you want, play PGA tour events or challenges, etc, then this game is not for you. If you want to play a golf game on equal footing with everyone else in the world and challenge yourself to get the best scores on large amount of different golf courses then give this game a try. Game looks awesome on PS4. Gameplay is solid and seems to run very smoothly on PS4. I haven't designed any courses yet myself but some of the courses others have published via the course designer are reallllllly amazing. Lots of potential. Would recommend.

Fortunately HB Studios fantastic have demonstrated excellent post-release support for this game and steadily added in many (although certainly not all) of the requested features and the great community that sprung up, that has offered weekly live shows and season long online tours, has helped make up for those features still missing.
In terms of gameplay The Golf Club is the best golf game I’ve played on consoles or PC, even with the frustrations such as overly easily flop shots and it being too easy to hit the fairway from the tee that lead to the better players shooting -10 or better more times than not.

Actually playing is only half the game however and the much vaunted course editor, that allows for great freedom when it comes to designing your own courses, is absolutely brilliant and far better than any other game has ever managed to offer. Online there are some incredible examples of what can be done and I’ve personally spent around 300 hours designing and fine tuning my own courses.

I played this game virtually every day for about 18 months so if you enjoy golf games this is a must buy, especially if you are interested in making your courses as well.

The only thing this game lacks is a wide variety of Player Customization options, it's pretty bare bones. Luckily the Course Creator is HUGE with features and options to shape and mold a course any way you want. You could easily spend 50 hours on the course creator alone. Very fun game for real life golfers, but may be a bit daunting for Golf newbies. Expand

The founds are very nice and add a lot to the experience. Hearing the cicadas or the Spring Peepers while you golf is just nice. The graphics are overall really nice, while some could use some improvement, it is overall nicely looking. The commentary is pretty fun too

The course creator is really cool as well, it is easy to use, hard to master. You can create a course in a variety of different environments and it is a pretty flexible tool as well. With the ability to "publish" it online as well for others to play, and for you to play courses other people made, is a nice little touch too.

For me, it is the best golf game I have ever played. I am not usually a huge one for sports games but this one really captured me. I highly recommend it, especially if you are a fan of golf.

Stick with it though and it will all start to feel very natural and organic and far more rewarding than any other golf game, where you essentially cheat by adding after-touches to a poor shot (who in real life can put backspin on a driver anyway?)

The offline game is brilliant but there are bugs with online multiplayer; dropping out to the main menu sometimes, a 10-20 second lag between a friend taking a shot on you watching it, tournaments losing running scores between courses and sometimes, a friend's put will go in on your screen, even though they actually missed (and vice versa).

The Collector's edition gives you tours which helps drive you through progressively more and more difficult courses to hone your skills but sadly don't offer anything in the way of character progression.

The built-in editor gives nearly limitless content (some better than others) via user-created content so there's a lot of replay value in the game.

Definitely worth the ~£10 you can pick this up for these days - the sequel isn't out for 6 months and may not even improve on this!

Very relaxing, or frustrating, just like the real deal. No flashy nonsense going on in the game to distract you from focusing on just playing golf.

The ability to create courses, play other people's courses, and do it all with relative ease is fantastic. I just picked this up, so I'll leave it at a 9 rating, because I suppose there could be a better introduction/tutorial to playing.

I just picked this up, so I'll leave it at a 9 rating, because I suppose there could be a better introduction/tutorial to playing. It's pretty straightforward, but a little practice drill area would be nice. Maybe something like a putting practice, a regular driving range (though I suppose you could essentially design your own), sand trap practice, and such would be a great addition.

If you're looking for an EA sports style game, this is not for you. If you actually play golf, or are in an area where that's too expensive or difficult to do regularly, this is a great experience. It's very peaceful. No crowds. No cheerleaders. Just a nice experience, like taking out your clubs and enjoying nature.

This is clearly not a game for everyone, but I think it's fantastic. This is probably geared more to the 30+ crowd, that doesn't care about twitch, or loud music in the background, but wants to enjoy the golf experience from home, regardless of the weather outside, and without the need to get your cleats on. You can tell that someone is a real enthusiast guiding the project, rather than a team of recent marketing grads that care more about a name endorsement, or making an arcade game experience.

The PS4 version of The Golf Club comes a lot closer than its rival next-gen console to living up to the stated objective (Ref. Gamepur, March 11, 2014) of 1080p at frame rates nearing 60 fps for each. The PS4 iteration of The Golf Club not only looks like a different class of product while sitting still, it does a solid job of maintaining 30 fps with vsync enabled. The screen tearing with vsync off is going to be distracting to most gamers and enabling vsync is a must for getting rid of at least 90% of it. You can leave vsync off and reap the benefits of frame rates that will creep into the lower 40s - and it is perceptible - if the screen tearing doesn't bother you. There is an improvement that I can feel and see in the swing interface/golfer animation when vsync is off and the setting is one that the game engine can render at ~40 fps; however, it's solid enough at 30 fps to get the job done without screen tearing.

The PS4's ability to sustain 30 fps keeps makes the swing interface feel a lot more responsive and intuitively rewarding. One of The Golf Club's biggest shortcomings is the lack of feel with the pitching, chipping, and flop shot swing mechanics. There just didn't seem to be enough gradients in the control range that the controller could hit with any scaling that felt congruent with the senses in the PC (medium spec gaming PC @ 30 fps) and XB1 versions. The PS4 version's interfaces with these shot types comes a lot closer to hitting mark in giving the gamer a more natural feel with these, but still needs improvement to attain what is achievable.

The 1080p environment allows for more natural and organic looking grass textures, more detailed blades in the rough, and richer sand textures. The golfer and golf club lines are smoother and mostly free of jagginess. There is just a hint of the flicker the 720p lines produce when animated. It may sound insignificant, but the simple fact that the ball is displayed with higher resolution allows it to have a more intricately shaded, and spherical appearance. When coupled with the fact that this now more 3-D looking ball is being animated with some texture, it appears to be rolling smoothly across the green surface at 30 fps, as opposed to a 2-D circular blip that's being painted in stages in 720p, and often sub 30 fps frame rates on its XB1 counterpart.

The Greg Norman Course Designer is a big part of the package and is ultimately what will give The Golf Club competitive leverage over golf games to come, who don't have a course creation utility. It's powerful enough to generate what I consider to be commercial grade quality courses, but there's a learning curve associated with being able to generate distinctive courses that other gamers will want to play over and over. The PC version still has a clear advantage in this area, but it's had the benefit of being incrementally updated through Early Access on Steam.

Yes, the gameplay options are limited, there's no career mode, and the turn-based multiplayer isn't being executed in real time. There's about a 6 to 10 second delay between the time your opponent hits their shot and you see the shot carried out on your screen. If you're in voice chat with your competitor, it creates a lot of awkward confusion and usually their vocal reaction to the shot is a spoiler. Without voice chat nothing is given away in terms of a spoiler, but you're still aware of the server delay. This alone will add 20 to 25 minutes to the time required to play a two player round in turn based play. Simultaneous play is an option and it will flow a lot smoother. It hides some of the server delay because you're not having to wait for your opponents shot to be depicted and finished... there's no fast-forward or skip to finish button while watching opponent's shots.

The sound effects in the game are as good as I've heard for ball striking. You can easily hear the difference between a squarely hit shot and one that's been "toed". I personally like the commentary in the game. It's casual and not meant to be taken as a professional TV broadcaster covering a golf event, he's an ordinary guy who gives you advice and comments on your shots as if he were another amateur playing the round with you. He'll also chide and compliment you accordingly. It can get a little repetitive, but a new zinger gets tossed in frequently enough to keep it interesting.

The Golf Club has enough simulation value to appeal to golfers who want no help, but if you pick your courses right, the casual more arcade oriented golfer can find some fun in the game. The difference between what's classified as an "Easy" course and a "Medium" course is a blurry line. Over time, you'll develop a list of favorite courses that the game will remember for you.

The Golf Club is a steal at $35 and will provide lasting play value.

The game is intended to reflect the "weekend warrior" experience. From the laid back commentary to the equal footing that all players are on, this game is truly representative of the amateur experience.

Visually, it is good. Not perfect but very very good. 1080p makes it stunning. The font sizes could be larger to make it easier to read at a distance.

The game is limitless thanks to the fantastic Greg Norman endorsed golf course creator. The volume courses available already is astounding that include real world replicas to outlandish fantasy experiences. The offering will continue to improve as HB Studios continues to release more content.

On that note, in the world of gaming, you'll be hard pressed to find a company more willing to listen and respond to their customers on their forums. It is refreshing to have a voice!

As far as lacking a "career mode", HB Studios has indicated that they are working on providing a career mode that will be released in the coming months.

Multiplayer is the only weak spot. There is a lag between shots. HB has indicated that this will be addressed as well. Time will tell on this.

Cross platform course sharing helps users tap into the collective creative genius of PS4, XB1 & PC users!! Yet another win for consumers.

In terms of difficulty, it is very very good. Depending on course difficulty, it is quite possible to struggle to break par. If you are looking for the -25 scores that (unfortunately) has become the norm in video game golfing, you will rarely find it in TGC.

All in all, I cannot recommend this game highly enough IF you want a refreshing, new, and challenging game of golf. If you only care about power ups, licensed products and unresponsive companies, this game is NOT for you.

For $34.99 the game is worth it. The unbelievable course creator is just over the top!!!! Excellent!!

I hooked a shot in a rocky area on the 2nd hole of a "highly rated" course and I couldn't even see my guy, but could still blindly swing only to have it go about 10 yards and hit more rocks and crash the game to where it completely closes out the game and gives me an error code. Once I reload the game it will let me continue my round exactly where I left off hitting that same blind shot from the rocks only to have the exact same thing happen again. I must have crashed the game at least 6 times in a row before finally giving up and have not played it since. I did manage to play 18 uneventful holes before I played that course, so I have played a total of 19 and 1/2 holes. The only thing cool about this game is the course create, but I actually haven't spent much time on that. Their is no point creating a cool course if it is not fun to play. I had to laugh at a Xbox One review I read that said "There is no joy in polishing a turd." That about sums it up. Expand

The game deserves more than what it is given. The poor reviews are most likely a product of people looking for the wrong thing in a golfing game. This isn't "Hot Shots Golf", or Wii Sports Golfing, where you can smack the ball 500 yds and have a laugh, this game was made to emulate a realistic golfing experience.

Golfing definitely isn't for everyone, and the same goes for this game. If you would rather die than play a game of golf in real life, this probably isn't the game for you.

Now, if you are interested in golf, or are just looking for a good challenge, this IS the game for you.

    Pros:
    - This (until EA releases Rory McIlroy PGA Tour) is the only golfing game for the next generation consoles.
    - The graphics are up to date, and look beautiful (especially in a sunset)
    - The physics are realistic, and add a challenge to the game
    - The game itself has a variety of features such as course creation, tournaments, multiplayer, and much more
    - Course creator (enough said)
    - Great narration when playing the game
    - Overall flow of a round is good, as there is very few loading screens
    - The game is not an arcade game. There are few to no assists for you to rely on (such as a ball travel line like in Tiger Woods)

    Cons:
    - Few customization options for players (but who needs to pimp out their golfer? Lets be modest here)
    - Standard set of clubs, no option to chose different brands
    - could have included some major courses

Overall, the game is above par (heh heh) for a game that isn't a major branding (such as EA). If you enjoy golf you will have no problem spending hours on end on this game chopping away. With a humble price of $30.00 for a digital copy, this game is more than worth its money.

The negative reviews that state the game "doesn't include any component of fun" obviously don't enjoy golfing. The game wasn't made to be an arcade game. It wasn't made to have funny animations when you hit the ball perfectly. It was made to be a golfing simulation and that is exactly what it is.

If you enjoy a round of golf in real life, this will surely satisfy your cravings.

    In Depth Rating:

    Gameplay- 8/10
    Graphics- 9/10
    Engine- 9/10
    Audio- 9/ 10
    Replayability- 10/10 (its golf)
    Completeness- 10/10 (no glitches found)
Company Dedication- 10/10 (they've continuously updated the game and added more features)

    Overall- 8/10

I got it for $5 and it is not bad. I think EA's game is better overall because TGC's controls, gameplay, and looks are just not as good. TGS does a lot of things better including playing against friends ghosts, course editor with fast downloading of user created courses and less unnecessary crap. Still both games look and run like poop. I thought we would be better with golf games in 2016.I got it for $5 and it is not bad. Give EA the finger and do yourself a big favor and buy this game. To me this game is the opposite of everything that's wrong with gaming these days. No gimmicks, no ads, no endorsements and no overpricing to pay for the hype machine.

But the star of the show in golf games are the courses and this game allows you to play an infinite number thanks to the amazing generator.
You see companies like EA wont like this, how else will they be able to justify rolling out the same game year in, year out without taking away courses you already bought and then re-selling them to you as DLC?

Heck even if I wasn't the greatest golf fan I would buy this just on the principle of what this company is trying to do (supply a solid game with endless replay ability and not rip us off for every cent)

Somtimes companies deserve your custom just because they treat the consumer with respect and dont try to milk them for every penny.

A most excellent game, if you are looking for great graphics, multiple courses, and an accurate simulation of real golf. The Greg Norman course generator is a big plus. Very, very good fun.

Addicting golf game, possibly the best in years. No senseless power ups and special effects are needed in this like in other golf games. This is a relaxing, fun experience and gets negative reviews probably because it isn't made by EA. The controls are near perfect and the simplicity is very refreshing. Bought from the PS store in summer sale for £11 and I'm really pleased with the game.

Course creator tools are excellent. User generated courses mean you can play unlimited different courses without getting bored. The game mechanics are very good, much better than EA golf games. Great fun with friends or on your own. This game shows you don't need licences to enjoy a golf game, I would

This would be a 10/10 had it not been for the lack of career mode or the ability to play against AI players. However, I hear there is a "Seasons Mode" available as DLC where you can do just that. I wish that mode was in the full game, but for only £11.99 on the PSN store I really can't moan at the price.
It's an absolutely fantastic golf game though! Takes me right back to the PGA games

The Golf Club launches on PS4 with a fancy social component and great creation options. It's visual quality is not what it was expected but even so, it will delight this noble sport lovers.
