Honestly, I don't get why a lot of people soured on this game. First off, if you're expecting to play an updated version of Resident Evil 4, then yeah you're going to be really disappointed. The boss are truly difficult and the first two DLCs do a great job of expanding the main story, providing insight into Juli Kidman. If there was something to complain about it would be the lack of ammo for the rocket launcher you unlock after finishing the game. Why isn't there an option for infinite rockets or maybe infinite ammo? Otherwise this was a compelling game to play and some of the puzzles were a little challenging. If you like playing games with a challenge like Bloodborne, then this game is right up your alley! Enjoy and be tortured lol! Expand

The problem most gamers have with The Evil Within is that its basically RE4 repurposed. It maybe a legitimate criticism. It doesn't mean the game can't be enjoyable. It maybe a legitimate criticism. It doesn't mean the game can't be enjoyable. Lets be honest, Black Sheep was Tommy Boy II and that did not make it any less enjoyable a movie to watch. The Evil Within is a Horror/Survival game, its intent was to create a creepy atmosphere, scare the player at times and build in a few plot twists. It largely succeeds at all these things while being challenging and enjoyable. Its a good, not great game.

The Evil Within is succeeds greatly in creating a dark, twisted, evil, frightening environment. As Sebastian navigates the game he is always placed in a setting that feels right for a horror movie. Everything seems dark and seems just a bit off. The detail works. The player is almost never in a room in the game where he would not feel jittery or scared in real life. The game does a good job of creating accurate setting, even if some parts are direct ripoffs from RE4.

The game also succeeds at creating a resource poor environment. No movie clips here. When this game is completed Sebastian will not have a GTA5 style armory of weapons and ammunition. When I played through this game I very nearly did not have enough ammo to get through the final boss fights. I was desperately searching for ammo, crafting agony bolts and conserving every single bullet I had. In one fight I had only one bullet to spare. The Evil Within is not a hack and slash or a button masher. The gamer will have to think his or her way through almost all combat scenes. Ammunition and resources must be conserved. The does a great job of making the gamer ration resources.

The Evil Within is challenging, maybe more challenging than any game I played in some time. The boss battles, all of them, all tough. When fighting the Spider boss the gamer may need to turn the game off for a while to calm down and come back to it. Its not clear if this a strength of the game or a weakness. Everyone wants a challenging game. The Evil Within can be challenging to the point of frustration and discouragement. I personally know one gamer who 2 chapters in determined the game was absurdly difficult and not worth the frustration of playing through. Whether this is a strength or weakness of The Evil Within is up to the gamer. If you don't like very difficult games and resource poor characters this is not the game for you.

Common complaints against the game are that the story has major plot holes, the main character is a non entity and character development is terrible. All are legitimate. Sebastian is a hollow character who lacks dimension. The elements of his back story that become known completely fail to impact the actions he takes. Worse, the back story fails to make the player identify with Seb. The same can be said of the Seb's sidekicks.

The criticism that the game lacks character development and that Sebastian is a hollow, undeveloped character should be tempered by the fact that The Evil Within is about setting and mood, not character. Setting and mood is developed and done so well. Take it for what is. This is a video game and not a movie. Not every game will be The Last of Us in terms of story or voice acting. The game still succeeds at what it needs to at basic levels to be fun.

The plot of The Evil Within is much maligned by gamers. No pulled punches here - it makes no sense. Critical aspects of the story are never explained. At the end of the game you are unsure where Sebastian really is. Side character Kidman is acting out a completely separate mission and has a completely different perspective to the story that no one else sees and is not revealed until the purchase of two DLC games. The story falls short. At no point did I feel I fully grasped what was going on. I got bits and pieces, filled in some holes, but I never felt confident I understand the whole story the game attempts to tell. If you are a gamer who needs the game to have an excellent story this game is not for you.

The Evil Within is a good but not great game. It gets a 7/10. It succeeds in being a horror/survival game and in challenging the gamer to outthink enemies while marshaling resources. Its very challenging. It fails graphically (the game does not really appear "next gen" or that much better than late release PS3 games. I expected more) and the story is overly convoluted and non sensical at times. The voice acting is average. What the game does well though it does very well, namely create setting and mood and make the player feel they are in a horror movie.

If you can play this game for what it is - a horror/survival game meant to be a creepy and tough to survive - its enjoyable and worth the full purchase price. If you can't enjoy an overly challenging game or you need a good story and great voice acting this game is not for you even at a reduced price. Lastly, if you can't get over it being a repurposing of RE4 - its not for you

Great game that will have you Sh*ting your pants at some parts. The storyline is fantastic and very unique. I did find however, that this game is more fun to watch than to actually play. The movement can be a bit clunky and I know that was intended. A must buy for fans of Resident Evil 4! Review score would be higher, but the movement and controls at time bothered me.

Has a horrible frame rate, but get past that and it's a survival horror gem. Truly terrifying with immense atmosphere that grips you and gives you chills. Fun exploration and some open level design mixed with linear progression. It's a 'Down The Rabbit Hole' psychological story with intense gore, mystery and horrific monsters. Atmosphere is A+. Technical improvements are needed in future games.

The game had many areas that made me feel uneasy. This game is difficult - I'm playing on the easy difficulty and am almost finished the game but must have already died over 50 times. There are sequences where you solve puzzles while in combat which is very harrowing - way better than slowly moving blocks to reach a key. Some of the bosses are frightening and to get through them I have to keep mentally telling myself that I'm solving a puzzle and not running from something that is going to rip off my head.

I also am a horror fan generally and while the game borrows from usually unrelated horror tropes, I'm still enjoying the experience. Zombies, Texas Chainsaws, Pyramid Heads, Japanese Horror, Experimentations gone wrong, altered realities - these are all present.

As far as story and atmosphere I would put this right under Silent Hill but still a great effort.

The game tries to be Resident Evil 4. That's great, if you liked RE4. If you didn't (like me) then push this game to one side. The atmosphere is spooky and the monsters are genuinely scary when you first come accross them, but that doesn't fix the problems with the experience. The game is very action orientated and it's difficulty comes when you cannot control your character (Sebastian) properly. He's a clunky wreck and gets in the way of the camera when you need to see most. Disarming traps for parts can easily have you killed if you're not quick enough to disarm them during the disarming mini-game.

With the number of positive reviews this game has received, I'm sure many will find it an excellent title to play. But if you're hoping for something different and more original from what the Resident Evil series has become, then stay well away from The Evil Within.

The Evil Within was a Roller Coaster of a game for me. Initially, I was really uninspired by it. The first few hours were spent getting used to the game's unusually dark settings (literally dark, not thematically). After the first main box, the game really started to grow into its own and show its true colors.

Survival horror at its core, it reminded my a lot of the original Dead Space.

After the first main box, the game really started to grow into its own and show its true colors.

Survival horror at its core, it reminded my a lot of the original Dead Space. The feeling of helplessness is nearly tangible. After a few attempts at running blindly to get from point A to point B, and quickly learning that was a very bad idea, the game become much more about stealth and cunning rather than brute force. A few of the mechanisms are lost as the game progresses. Hiding from your enemies, while effective, seemed to become a less common practice about halfway through.

The world the game is set in is the main focus. The protagonist himself is undeniable forgettable. His storyline is revealed through little journal entries preceding save points as the game progresses, making it even more forgettable for those who refuse to read for story depth.

There are a few mechanical flaws that carry over due to the console base. Framerate drops, while not common, are expected. There are two black bars along the top and bottom of the screens to simulate a wider scope of view. While these were not game-breakers for me, many people were extremely agitated by their presence.

Despite its flaws, I was drawn into the world. The game is not overly long, but the atmosphere is infectious! For any survival horror fan, this is a must play. Same goes for horror/gore nuts. For those just looking for the next game, would not recommend picking it up without playtesting first.

Game is perfect combination of Stealth, Shooting and Strategy. There is wide variety of weapons that you can enjoy using throughout the game but sometimes you have to prefer stealth to save ammunition. Shooting requires strategic approach to progress game without getting out of resources. Game is scary and does not rely on jump scares. Upgrading stuff, scavenging this all combined delivers one of the best survival horror experience.

This game is little difficult for a casual gamer even at the casual difficulty, some like me who like to take challenges would love the game being difficult then usual games but my brother who never played a game after resident evil 4, found it very frustrating even at casual difficulty so I feel like there should have been an even easier difficulty. Also there are alot of trophies which are impossible to achieve for a casual gamer. The game has extra-ordinary violence but again some would have liked this game because of this.

Talking about the story, I would just say this is not the best aspect of this game. Graphics are good but I'm still waiting for a game that defines 4th generation graphics

The length of the game is also a plus. I completed it in 15 or 16 hours on 'survival'. There are plenty of cutscenes, and well made environments, all levels are very different and distinct, its never gonna be like you think it feels familiar, not a single time. I am surprised that they managed to make all the ugly, old, creepy, dark environments with so much character.

The horror element, yes there were few creepy and scary moments, but just at the beginning, then it's basically gritty and unpleasant feeling throughout the game.

The combat is what I dont like too much. First in the game where there aren't that many bullets, the meele attacts are extremely inefective, even though guys uses knife for stealth kills, he doesn't use it combat. It might around 20 hits to kill a lowest enemy. Sure you can get a axe or a torch and get a instakill, but only once. However the burning of the downed enemies or oil puddles are quite cool, but it's not 100% reliable, what I mean that if you burn a corpse or downed enemy, not always or not every enemy that is at required distance, will burn also. But i guess it has point as nothing in the game is reliable, just like headshots, which is weird as hell, as you always are used in all the shooting games that headshot is a kill - not necessarily in the evil within. So for these things game loses 1 point.

While the story might not be the best, but the way you see it unfold is really nice. I won't be telling how, because it would be quite a spoiler.

Graphics? I'm never too fussed about it too much, I'm more into imersion most of the time, I did really enjoyed the textures and details on all the walls etc.

I do reccomend the game for people who are dissapointed with grecent games as I am. So this was quite fresh breath of air.

    8.5 and reccomend

Survival horror at it's finest. If you ever griped about Resident Evil losing it's roots by becoming an action shooter, this game is for you. Great fun that doesn't sell out to the lowest common denominator like most modern games do.

At my age, I like to relax after work, that's about it. I just finished the game after 22 hours of gameplay on survival mode and died 107 times. The way how you die in this game is so repetitive that I pretty much yawned all the way through. Constantly running out of ammo, nothing makes sense (jumping from one scene to the other) - half way through I kinda felt like the developers were Japanese (didn't know they were initially as into shows Bethesda to be the main developer *big Fallout Fan here*) - why am I saying this? Because only Japanese would be sadomasochist enough to endure so many deaths. It comes to a point that I stopped enjoying it but since I'm addicted to collect trophies I pushed myself to finish the game. Usually I like playing games on hard mode. With Evil Within, so many times I was tempted to decrease the difficulty down to casual level.

Honestly, if you are in my situation and game to relax, have a good time then this game is not for you. I recently finished Shadow of Mordor - Now that was really cool :D - and switching to this game right after felt clumsy, slow paced, heavy and dragging the story.

God how I used to love Silent Hill back in the good old days - this game tries to reconciliate too many genres. It tries to be The Last of Us, tries to be Resident Evil, tries to be Silent Hill.

Now that I have finished the game. I have unlocked the RPG and machine gun. I ll play a little to get as many trophies as possible. But I will NOT replay under AKUMA or Nightmare mode.

I would definitely not recommend this game at all.

After leaving past projects behind, Shinji Mikami creates his own team and strives to make another great installment in the survival horror genre, and what we get is a good but flawed experience that doesn't live up to the expectations many fans had. However, that doesn't mean that the Evil Within is not an enjoyable experience.

The Evil Within stars Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his colleagues, Joseph and Kidman, who arrive on the scene of a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. Very quickly, everything goes to hell and Seb is forced to survive in a new twisted reality. Ultimately, the story is the weakest part of this whole game, by far. Seb’s bland reactions, lack of common sense and weak responses hardly do anything to make the story compelling, and while the voice acting is good across the board, dialogue is not. Seb is transported from area to area and he brushes it off without a second thought. Events happen where people try to kill each other, causing mistrust and drama, only for said events to be completely forgotten the next time these characters meet. There’s not even any semblance of plot until the game’s ninth chapter, but at that point, the story becomes so complicated just for the sake of being complicated, only for you to reach the end with so many questions unanswered. The subplot that builds up concerning Seb’s family ultimately builds up to nothing, and the story ultimately doesn't make much sense by the end.

Overall, the story is a complete fail, so it’s up to the rest of the game to hold it up, and it succeeds in that regard. Inventory management in a world with limited resources is key to surviving, and it’s up to you to be smart and tactical to get through the journey, relying more on stealth and conserving ammo rather than go guns blazing. It’s a sure fire way to get killed. Aside from this, there’s also some light crafting and even an upgrade system, allowing you to upgrade your health, sprint, and even your firearms.

The combat is a mixed bag. As fun as it is, it’s no secret that the aiming isn't very good. It zooms in too close and feels stiff, and the crosshair doesn't accurately represent a bullet’s trajectory. It can make scoring a headshot more difficult than it should be, especially with the pistol. Luckily, there’s a good variety of weapons; shotguns, sniper rifles, and my favorite, the crossbow, which has multiple types of bolts, letting you freeze enemies, set them on fire, and even electrocute them. The crossbow is that weapon you’ll rely on when you're cornered and need an out.

Another new mechanic is using matches to burn bodies, instantly killing prone enemies and possibly burning adjacent enemies as well. It’s always satisfying to burn a body just as an enemy runs at you, but it’s also just as frustrating when it fails to work. Although fun, the inconsistency with the matches actually working makes it a fun, useful, but ultimately an unreliable mechanic at best.

The game’s number one strength is the vast amount of different level designs. Along with the sections that are centered on horror, there are plenty of small puzzles, action sections, and even a few stealth sections. The vast and varied amount of levels are impressive, and I often marveled at the different obstacles and boss fights the game threw at me. There are a few cheap bosses here and there, but for the most part, they're fun.

There are a few small complaints like the bad AI for your partner Joseph, but the game’s worst sin is easily when an enemy attacks you. Never have I found a game that actually immobilizes you just to watch an enemy hit you with their weapon. It’s completely asinine because it prevents you from defending yourself and opens you up to all enemy attacks around you. It’s easily the most frustrating mechanic of the game, by far.

Nowhere are the game’s flaws more prominent than in Nightmare mode. Essentially hard mode, all the mechanics and flaws in the game’s design become even more noticeable, constantly hitting you with cheap, unfair shots. The epic boss fight against Laura becomes a frustrating bullet sponge that one shots you and the game spams bear traps during the action sequences which is the absolute worst decision because you can’t keep an eye on bear traps and your enemies at the same time. A true testament to the difficulty is the game’s death counter. On my first playthrough on Normal I died 17 times, but on my first run on Nightmare, I died a record 64, not including the deaths that caused me to quit out of frustration.

Despite the game’s many frustrations, the Evil Within is a game I look back at fondly, with memories of the boss fights and many of the awesome level designs I loved to play through. If you’re expecting a terrifying scare fest, the lack of horror sections might turn you off, but the game is ultimately a good survival horror game. Just don’t play on Nightmare, or your experience might be ruined.

Not a must have game but it´s solid. The Resident Evil 4 fans (like me) is always present and that is very good because RE4 is one of my favorite games all time. The Evil Within is not brilliant as it spiritual predecessor was but i really enjoyed this game.

I recently picked the Evil Within Ltd Edition new for £25 in store, and felt as a horror game fan I would enjoy it. And so far, so good.

The game play is smooth and while targeting and actually killing things can become frustrating, it actually adds to the beauty of it. I found myself dying about twenty times in the opening scene trying to attack the lurcher in the room, and its this guess work and desire to complete that makes you want to get that little further.

The story will fry your brain a little, but the world and themes are pretty cool. I don't understand how anyone can rate this game as a 0 or 1 ... it's not the best game I've ever played, but for £25 it was a bargain really, and I'd suggest any horror game fan to give it a whirl as they wont be disappointed.

Wow. It has been a while for horror game lovers, like myself, to find games that are truly worth the hours and money spent. This game was definitely WORTH it. It keeps a real horrifying feel to it while maintaining a really great storyline. At times, it gives you that out right "panic state of mind" that a lot of us saw in Outlast. The monsters themselves are well put together. The designsWow. It has been a while for horror game lovers, like myself, to find games that are truly worth the hours and money spent. At times, it gives you that out right "panic state of mind" that a lot of us saw in Outlast. The monsters themselves are well put together. The designs for them are real creative. The atmosphere for the game is overall creepy and it does not rely on jump scares to scare you. The only two issues I had with this game was it's melee usage and it's stamina. Overall, the game relies on guns to do the killing. You will come across the occasional axe or whatever but can only use it once before it vanishes. You can use your fists but good luck with that. You can upgrade the stamina like anything else on the game BUT when you do run out of stamina, the game actually makes your character STOP to catch a breathe. Instead of just slowing down (like in GTA games) you actually stop. And yes, even when enemies are right up on you. This has actually gotten me killed once or twice. However, those small pet peeves are not good reasons to not fully enjoy this game. Overall, it is fantastic and way worth the try! I love it! Expand

Graphics/Sound: Okay I have heard before that the graphics in this game are not very good, I have no idea where that is coming from I personally thought the graphics were beautiful. Dark, dank, and disgusting yes but beautiful as a horror game should look. The textures, resolution, and frame rate (at least during game play) are all great on the PS4 version at least the PS3 version has some frame rate dips now and again. Now I will say that the cut scenes at least on the PS4 and PS3 versions of the game have issues, from popping in textures to the occasional stutter. That aside like I said the game looks and runs great and the visuals along with the sound design definitely made me pretty tense during some parts of the game.

Story/Characters: Yeahhhhhh this is where the game kinda falls short. The story is not really bad but is pretty cliched and the pacing is really all over the place but I will say that I did want to see where everything was going so I have to at least give it that. The characters I have to be honest did almost nothing for me, I did kind of like Sebastian because of his almost not giving a crap attitude throughout most of the game and the dynamic between him and Joseph when it was allowed to be explored (which doesn't happen often) was kind of charming but besides that I just didn't care about what happened to any of them.

Game Play: This is honestly kind of a mixed bag, I know this has been said before but think Resident Evil 4 meets Silent Hill and you'll be on the right track. The game is mostly a lot of shooting because melee combat is pretty much useless and the gun play is really fun and tense. You will find yourself looking around a lot for ammo and health items which in some parts of the game can be pretty scarce leading to some panicked moments especially against bosses. You can also find what I called Brain Juice throughout the game which can be used to upgrade yourself and your weapons in the save area. There are some things that got on my nerves like some kind of cheap invisible enemies and some segments that felt a bit to much like action shooter set pieces which would be fine if ammo was more plentiful but over all the game play is very solid.

Verdict: While the game isn't everything I hoped and it does fall seriously short in some areas, the things that really matter in a horror game such as atmosphere and solid game play are a really good return to form for Survival Horror from the guy who revolutionized it in the first place Shinji Mikami and its great to see him return to what he does best with one of the best games in this genre I have played in a long time.

I've only recently bought the game for 25.00 and it wasn't even worth that. I've been a long term survival horror fan and have played SH games since they began, I also enjoyed the change in pace in games like RE4 which lead to great games like Deadspace 1. But Evil Within is bad, really bad.

To start, the black bars destroy the experience, I spent the first hour trying to figure out how to turn them off. Finally after going online I realised they couldn't be removed. They take you out of the experience and block your view. Very bad if playing on a smaller TV which I often do if the wife kicks me out on the front room to play upstairs!

The graphics are good but are spoilt by the restricted view, which is unnecessary, if The Last Of Us can look great in full screen running at a higher frame rate then there is no excuse for the ridiculous black bars!

The controls are sluggish and a step back, most areas are very dark and too hard to see any of the 'action'.

The game cannot decide if it is a SH or an action game. On one hand you have no ammo or weapons and are forced to use stealth but stealth doesn't work and often you are forced to confront enimies with nothing to fight with. At these points when surrounded I just put the pad down and waited for the character to die as there is no way to escape. To me this is bad game design.

The story is bland and uninspiring. The first level is fun, the rest are like a very poor Resident Evil 4 clone lacking all the thrills, set pieces and story which made Re4 so great.

I had no reason to complete the game and I will not be returning to it. If you like SH games stick check out Alien Isolation and Outlast on PS4 instead of this unfinished nearly broken game.
