    I finally beat this game after playing it a few times and getting bored. It was quite the torturous chore to beat because of the trial and error gameplay that you had to nearly perfect before proceeding forward. It was more of a challenge to overcome than a fun game to play. The plot/story didn't seem to really amount to anything even by the credits which was a disappointment.

    This game was not only great for its time, but is objectively great now. Yes, the graphics are rough, the controls are clunky and the mechanics are dated. But there is a genuine sense of horror and suspense throughout the game. Something RE4R failed to offer at all.     The scariest thing about this game is the controls. I liked the atmosphere and the graphic style. Story was ok, but the things that totally ruined the game for me were the awful controls and camera. Instead my character using the mele attack with the weapon in hand it would keep trying to curb stomp enemies and miss.     Excellent, suspense horror action game and in its best parts a spiritual successor to best action-horror there is: Resident Evil 4.
    Has A LOT of replay ability and is very fun on Normal and Hard. The random enemy AI is fun and every play through might surprise you.
    Start by playing on any difficulty, deactivating the black bars and maybe lower the film grain to 50%. Start by NOT    Excellent, suspense horror action game and in its best parts a spiritual successor to best action-horror there is: Resident Evil 4.
    Has A LOT of replay ability and is very fun on Normal and Hard. The random enemy AI is fun and every play through might surprise you.
    Start by playing on any difficulty, deactivating the black bars and maybe lower the film grain to 50%.
    Start by NOT upgrading stamina more than once; MAX OUT Matches and Pistol Ammo Stock and upgrade Pistol sway twice as well as Melee. Skip upgrading weapon damage and various health stats etc.
    Save A LOT in the beginning on different saves and replay Chapter 3 a lot since the village has A LOT of stuff going on.
    Learn how to sprint effectively on low stamina, shoot enemies in the legs, melee, throw bottles in the head, crouch and finish, etc.
    I recommend getting the Japanese lightly censored version on PS4 digitally from Japanese PSN since the gory death scenes can become a nuisance. It has both Japanese and English Audio and Subtitles. The game is made to be played in 30 fps with DualShock4. You get a decent stable 30 fps on either PS4 Pro or PS5.
    The DLC is very unique and sadly a bit expensive outside US and thus many people skips on it. Only on US PSN they sell a combo of both game and DLC often very cheap.
    To all the people complaining on the graphics which often looks great and sometimes a bit too much PS360: The Evil Within released on PS3 and 360 also! So there you have it!    … Expand

    Final Thoughts:

    The Evil Within is great fun…as an action game. Its gameplay and mechanics make the player think about their next moves, and with some thrilling tension and glimmers of plot potential, it’s a decent start to a series I’m looking forward to continuing.

    It starts a bit weak, and chapter 3 is pretty dam hard as well to finnish, but the more you play and understand the story, the better it get's, but they just did it in a really messy and confusing way but did made the end story way better creating your own conspiricy in your head.

    gameplay is clunky but it's good gameplay, I enjoyed them game after beating chapter 3

    Very good horror game with a unique story with a combination of Inception and Resident Evil. Game looks and performs great on PS5 both with and without the letterbox option enabled. DLC is also good and would recommend it.

    Amazing, Scary, Visceral, Unnerving, Challenging and, sometimes, Painfully - Excruciating as I was too afraid to keep going. I enjoyed it very much, and I really hope that there will be a remaster, or better a remake in the future.

    Despite the 7 i really enjoyed this game a lot, i was reading the collectables to undertstand even more about the game. The probems are the grapichs i also hate the annoying black bars on the top and bottem of the screen and theres not much horror, felt more like a resident evil game but with bad graphics

    Just based on the first chapter:
    There's a comical amount of gore in this game. I can't take the horror element seriously. There's a frickin blood-drenched slip n slide 10 minutes in. Honestly, I find this game to simply be more unpleasant than horrific. The slow pace of moving around the environment isn't really setting a mood for me. Hiding just makes this feel like Outlast.

    The guy with the chainsaw bounces around like a kid throwing a tantrum. While I'm sure it'd be a "wtf" moment in real life, it doesn't translate into the game.

    Yet somehow, I have to watch the camera bounce with Sebastian as he limps. Odd what they choose to emphasize.

    Speaking of, the characters are so lacking in character that they pretty much fit the role of meatbags which the bad guys treat you as. So it doesn't really feel like much is at stake. Just a whole bunch of trial and error. Might as well call it Trial And Error: The Game (Soaked in Blood edition).
    There isn't any way to revert to the last checkpoint without dying so you're literally just going to stand there taking 5 chainsaw slashes waiting to die, meanwhile the first guy you see auto kills you? I don't understand the pacing choices.

    The grainy filters are really monotonous, btw. That actually references the overarching issue here: it's just a mix of random horror elements thrown into an action game without much explanation.

    Okay, he just limped for a while, and then something pounded on the ceiling and he started running. Umm... Why? Did the vibration somehow heal him? You know what, I'm just going to accept that this game makes zero sense.

    I'll update my review as I continue to play, but this isn't looking very promising. Really don't see what the hype is about.    … Expand

    This game is way better than its own sequel. The Evil Within 2 was just a clunky mess filled up with janky cutscenes, but the first game is still a masterpiece of survival horror.

    One of the best horrors i've played. Legit scary game in which you need to take care of your ammo and stamina. Bossfights are intense and scary, and the game has some memorable enemies. A must play for every hardcore horror fan.

    And talking about this, my rating for this game is not a 10 because of two points:
    - A ridiculously easy final battle;

    To me it seems that this horror masterpiece is criminally underrated. This is Dead Space level horror game, worth trying for amazing psychological horror atmosphere and interesting boss fights.

    By far the worst game I have ever played Terrible inventory management weapons sucks ammo is really limited stop at chapter 10 that elephant bosses literally a huge headache to beat in such a tight corner space died so many time I just gave up and uninstalled the game I would recommend giving this game a huge pass and play the more better sequel.

    Но атмосфера здесь все же отличается от RE, игра дарит довольно уникальное ощущение трипа, смеси кошмара наяву, галлюцинаций, обрывков реальности, бреда из фобий и страхов, всё в классных пропорциях, запутанная история, классические персонажи, гораздо жестче и острей RE7, и с хорошим масштабом и бюджетом, что не так уже часто сейчас встречается в подобном жанре.

    И при этом это все еще классный боевик. Спасибо авторам, за то что продолжают дарить нам такие приключения. Прошел с удовольствием. 9/10.    … Expand

    If you want a solid survival horror experience with deep story and gameplay, play this game and the amazing DLCs. You don't have to play the sequel though. The first game is better than 2 in every possible way.

    Un survival horror espectacular, con una historia muy entretenida, tiene momentos bastante estresantes ya que algunos de los jefes son complicados pero es muy divertido, estilo muy "Resident Evil", con la escasez de munición y la indefensión que eso provoca, sistema de mejora del personaje muy interesante.

    This game is quite bad. It looks very cheap and uses a lot of tired ways to try to be scary like jump scares, a lot of dead bodies, a ton of gore and cliché enemy designs. The story is very convoluted and random things just happen in it and it's pretty hard to follow, the characters are also poorly written or some of them are annoying. The gameplay is boring, clunky and offers nothing new.

    Атмосфера в игре получилась очень напряжённая. В некоторых моментах просто не хочется проходить дальше. Не    Ну, что сказать? Недавно прошел Resident Evil Village и почему то вспомнил Evil Within.
    Когда игра выходила, помню очень много уверений в том, что это и будет тот самый каноничный Resident Evil от которого так далеко ушла шестая часть. Авторы почти не обманули. Объясню почему почти.
    Атмосфера в игре получилась очень напряжённая. В некоторых моментах просто не хочется проходить дальше. Не то, что страшно, а просто как то неприятно. Может это и есть атмосфера настоящего хоррора, но мне было как то не комфортно.
    Вот то, что касается сильных ощущений от игры.
    Теперь о не очень весёлом. Мне не понравилась шутерная часть игры, стрелять мне было не удобно. Передвигаться кстати тоже. Не знаю какая то корявость была во всём этом. Это касается и стэлса.
    Да в этом игра чем то напоминала Resident Evil 4, но только в этом.
    История, ну лично для меня, была не плохая.
    Честно говоря выдохнул когда прошел игру до конца, это мне чем то напомнило прохождение Resident Evil 7. Игра не плохая, но возвращаться в неё я не хочу.
    Кстати в сиквеле исправили всё то, что мня так угнетало в оригинале. Да и эта душащая атмосфера исчезла. Как по мне сплошные плюсы.
    Проходил игру на XBox 360, но пробовал и на PlayStation 4. Визульно разницы не заметил, может разрешение повыше. Поэтому и оценки +- одинаковые.    … Expand

    It is a great horror game.One of the best cinematic experience's I've had in a video game.The only downside I didn't like is the camera angle was to close to the character and the sprint ot was like running 5 meters and Sebastian was out of breath.The upgrade system is also to slow.Overall its a game everyone must play.

    One of the most underrated Horror Masterpieces of all time! This game is absolutely incredible, specially on PC, but also on PS4. It has one of the best selection of boss monsters and regular enemies i have seen in any game ever, maybe only beaten by Resident Evil 4. In depth crafting/upgrading system, one of the best atmospheres of any horror games (yes better than any silent hill) andOne of the most underrated Horror Masterpieces of all time!     Really awesome and genuinely scary game like Holy moly man , this game , a game hadn't scared me like that in a very long time like they manage to scare me and stress me out to the point of anxiety, like kudos to the developers , reminded a lot of resident evil , a lot of borrowed things from it but still made it their own as well , to make it truly unique

    One of the most underrated horror games. This game is like a mix of psychological horror and hack-and-slash. The Evil Within does a lot of things better than The Evil Within 2. Both story and gameplay are more interesting than the sequel. If you want to try Evil Within series, just play the first game. and Kidman DLCs.

    Very underrated survival horror game. Intriguing story, well-designed bosses and amazing atmosphere. Sure it's difficult but when you finally beat the game you will feel overwhelmed, because you survived the beautiful nightmare. This game was way better than the bland second game.

I should have given him 9, but because of the ignorant classics giving him 0 or 1 on the basis of nothing, I give him 10 To raise the average. The graphics are a bit dated for 2021, but on PS5 it still makes a dirty impression.     I would like to call it " Resident evil 4.5". Everything is perfect but it's very laggy, sometimes game crashing. They really like use flash light to hurt players' eye, it's annoying.

    If you can accept laggy and flash light to hurt your eyes, believe me, it's a good game, I am evry enjoy it. Don't give up "Akumu" mode, lot of fun there.

    This is a solid survival horror game that could’ve been even much better. The scares are genuine, and this is no easy game that is for certain. I’ve been playing survival horror for 24years and this one is very very frightening at points. Also the ability to craft and level up is solid.

The story and writing are very cryptic . I have no idea with a good story like this why they decided not to tell the player more clearly what was going on.
    So, it can be frustrating at times to not know what is really happening.
    But make no mistake this game knows how to scare you and I enjoyed it very much. Onto the DLC and sequel!!    … Expand

    The Evil Within is not a perfect game, but it has great atmosphere, interesting story, cool enemy designs and tense gameplay. Way better than the second game.

    Very fun its worth it for £14.99 its a lot like the resident evil games the stories the antagonists are spooky the few puzzles in the game were good evil within 2 might be better though.

    Um dos melhores games de survival horror que eu já joguei. Mistura psicologia e psicanálise com questões políticas e filosóficas, tudo para formar um enredo que é muito mais complexo do que aparenta ser. Os graficos são ultrapassados, é bem verdade, mas ainda assim o game possui um sistema de iluminação incrível.

    This game is garbage in 2020. You will despise the game if you have played modern horror games such as Resident Evil 7 or Until Dawn, which are so much better. The control, graphics, characters, combat in this game is just plain boring and not engaging

    Thos game is a masterpiece It’s a new idea and you have to understand the game to love the game besides David with them towards the next open world and a new ideas of horror games you can’t compare the evil Within was any of horror games I highly recommend this game for horror games fans

    Jogo interessante, com história fraca, mas ao menos nos deixa curioso. Por ser um game de 2014 achei uma jogabilidade muito ruim, travada e com muitos erros e glitches. A trilha sonora, mix sound também ruins. Joguei até o final para entender o hype, e continuo não entendendo.

    The dark and gloomy style of this game I love, as it should be a horror game, everything is very well designed enemies, creatures, bosses and especially the return. It is worth it and above all the difficulty is well done, especially the Akumu Mode.

    Hard Diffulty and Creative Puzzles good shooting Feelings and high level Map design.
    anyway letterbox was only worse thing and DLC 3 First Person view

Sadly they didn't pick it up in the sequel but maybe in the third game. The Gameplay is fun, it reminds me of The Last of Us, but it's also like RE4.     Una entrega de 8.5 para arriba. La estética, el diseño de niveles y la ambientación son sublimes, y más teniendo en cuenta la época de lanzamiento. Presenta un punto de terror más intenso que su secuela, y aunque jugablemente es más tosco, merece mucho la adquisición de esta obra de arte.

    Mención añadida merecen sus DLC, ambos complementan la experiencia de manera sublime.

    Ok it is like Resident Evil meets Silent Hill sort of-ish. It does all the cliché trope horror things. So at no point was I even scared. I liked the action orientated gameplay. It was fun shooting up those freaky freaks. Stealth was ok and mostly not needed. Some meh QTE and scripted instant kill BS, but not that many. The bosses were fun and Silent Hill type memorable. I liked how theOk it is like Resident Evil meets Silent Hill sort of-ish. It does all the cliché trope horror things. So at no point was I even scared. I liked the action orientated gameplay. It was fun shooting up those freaky freaks. Stealth was ok and mostly not needed. Some meh QTE and scripted instant kill BS, but not that many. The bosses were fun and Silent Hill type memorable. I liked how the environment was used to make it more challenging and also helpful to the player. Progression based skills with scavenging lite and ultra basic crafting is a ok carrot on stick.

    The story is ok, but the VA is mostly bad and the dialogue is just crap. The game play and level design is where the fun stuff is at. Thankfully multiple saves even though they are only check point saves. So no save anywhere or any time. I almost thought I would need to reload for lack of health midway, but I scraped through on a tiny bit of health for one entire level. The game throws out a lot of cheap tactics and cheap traps. Which is compounded by a bad camera angle at times with a constant poor frame rate. The purposely wobbly aim and terrible lighting in some sections doesn't really help.

    The atrocious frame rate was such a big issue on the PS3 I literally gave up on the game. Optimization is barely better on the PS4. I had bought this game twice now So I was determined to finish it on the PS4 and I did. I have no wish to replay this atrocious unoptimized game ever again on the PS4.    … Expand

    Totally recommended. Real horror survival (although linear).
    Each encounter creates sense of helplessness.
    Better than Evil Within 2 and few Resident Evil franchise
