No game deserves a 0 or 1, if it does, then it's because it's truly unfinished and unplayable. The Evil Within is neither of those things. This game is a true return to classic horror.

I don't understand someone trying to say RE4's camera is better, I had just played it the day before The Evil Within had come out and it is in no way better, the only thing it has going for it aiming wise

The only thing keeping me from giving this game a 10 is the voice acting and story are kind of lackluster. The story itself is cool, but the way it's told isn't. The voice acting is a little off when it comes to emotions and delivery.

Gameplay wise this is what RE5 and RE6 should of been. The difficulty is not that tough either, even on survival. It's kinda funny when people complain that the game is too tough, but Dark Souls is even harder and gets rave reviews. The enemies in this game have patterns and for most of them you don't need ammo, and if you do it's laid out in the environment for you to find.

I don't normally write reviews for games, but will if I find that people are being unfair towards a game just to follow the trend.

If you like Resident Evil, Dead Space, or even Silent Hill you will most likely like this game.

Great game! The atmosphere is beyond amazing! Sometimes I see things that remind me of Resident Evil 2,3 and 4. I often think its a giant wink at Capcom from Shinji Mikami. The plot confused me at first, but it explained itself if you continue playing.

Saving was actually more forgiving than I thought it would be, and the upgrades didn't seem to help much other than on the actual healing/abilities sections. Overall this game should be tried by everyone. It renewed my faith in the horror genre. Excuse me while i go buy all the Resident Evils now. Expand

Just finished my 1st playthrough and I'd say I'm really into this game. I'm a fan of Resident Evil franchise especially RE2 and RE4. I think if you miss the RE4-style gameplay, this is the game for you. However, don't expect much on the story and characters, and the horror experience (though I do appreciate the weird art and environment).

the game performs extremely well on my PC

i read a lot about the crash problem, i can say from my experience i didn't have a single crash or save bug or any other problem. very smooth running(it still a pretty crappy port but oh well, not everything is perfect)
the only bad things i can say about the game is the frame lock and the stupid black bars( you can fix it but still it ruin the overall experience)

A lot of said reviews bashing the game simply because they feel the game is too hard for them i mean really?! Honestly if you've ever played a survivor horror game in your life or have the slightest amount of common sense for that matter, you really wouldn't be dying that much in this game. It's meant to be played at a slower pace- it's not some **** call of duty clone where you run through each room absorbing enemy damage like some bullet sponge boss (a la Destiny) yes you have limited ammo in this game but if you play it correctly and actually look around your surroundings properly (break open boxes etc) you should have no problem finding enough ammo to deal with the enemies you will encounter along the way how do i know this? because thus far i have made it to chapter 7 WITHOUT HAVING ACTUALLY RUN OUT OF AMMO FOR EVERY SINGLE WEAPON I OWN EVEN ONCE. It confounds me how crappy at games the reviewers who gave this game a negative review without any actual basis must be because seriously it's not that hard. Graphics wise, this game isn't really all that bad either, i have seen alot of people comparing it to the last of us, saying that it's graphics are actually worse than a last gen game but that isn't completely the case, i mean has anyone actually taken the time to look at a damn tree in the last of us?? the approach the developers took to modeling them is completely one dimensional and outdated, where as in the evil within, i have actually seen some better foliage design techniques- my point is, it's not really accurate to say that the games graphics are terrible, some things were done well, others not as well, but overall the game looks pretty good and shouldnt bother you unless you are a total graphics whore.

Gameplay wise the game plays kinda like a cross between RE4 and TLOU but leans more towards the resident evil side, which i for one enjoy. the various mechanics present in the game (especially those dealing with combat) aren't at all outdated, they are simply pinpointed towards increasing that feeling of despair that the developer of a horror game surely wants their audience to feel while playing their game. The camera controls can be slightly annoying at times but you get used to them pretty quickly, and the story really isn't all that bad, in fact if you did your research on this game, you would know that the story is meant to seem somewhat irrational, YOU ARE INSIDE OF THIS MAN'S HEAD FOR CHRIST'S SAKE and this is actually something that i applaud the developer for because it simply means that they have more freedom to do what they want with the game. The atmosphere and art direction in this game is also quite good, the enemy character design is interesting and terrifying at the same time and the breaking up of the level design into clastrophobic as well as open areas is done in all the right places.

Overall, if you are a survival horror fan you will definitely want to pick this one up, it isn't the most amazing game ever but it definitely is a good game, one that I, a long time survival horror fan, has, and will continue to enjoy in the future.

First off, here are the two big annoying things with the game: forced letterbox ratio. In an attempt to be cinematic, they decided to go with a widescreen resolution. I find that very annoying, as I like to be able to see everything on my screen. The second really annoying thing is the very narrow FOV. I understand that the game is going for a claustrophobic feel, but again, I like to see things on my screen.

On the positive side of things, this game completely nails what being a survival horror game is all about, bar a couple chapters. Amusingly, I found those couple chapters to be very Resident Evil 4-esque, and the game is paced rather alike to Resident Evil 4, although I find the subject material to be far more compelling, as it evokes a stronger Silent Hill feel than Resident Evil. When the game does get its encounters and its tone right, the game is brilliant, but when it's completely off-tone, and you're in an arena trying to defeat hordes of enemies, the game is really, quite off-putting. I'm really in two minds about The Evil Within, but at the end of the day, I really enjoyed what I played, and I think that has to do with good the combat feels and actually, a pretty compelling story, even if the characters are flat and underdeveloped. The Agony Crossbow provides a lot of strategic options for you, as well as stealth, bottles, and even such a simple mechanic as burning bodies with matches. You have to be careful about what you upgrade on your character as choice really does matter on that front, as you, by no means, will be able to upgrade even remotely close to everything.

In short, this game is pretty hit or miss, but for me, the hits were strong enough to truly make this a very compelling experience with the amount of combat variety offered to you, but yet, managing to strangle your resources down to a minimum. I didn't have much of an issue conserving resources on Survival difficulty, but Nightmare mode is a whole different ball game. This is the best survival horror experience in a fair amount of time. (I did play Alien: Isolation [and reviewed it], you can check out my review and why it didn't really stick with me, if that tickles your fancy)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think 9 is a fair score for this game. It is hands down one of the most tense, atmospheric and genuinely artistic games I have played in years.

Although the main character has the charisma of a damp slice of gluten free bread, the world itself is truly intriguing and engaging. The game rewards your bravery and will to explore but also sending you flying into 37 separate pieces for the slightest slip up.

Is it fun? Oh my god yes.

Is it hard? In parts yes, but it really does encourage you to observe and adapt to your surroundings to be successful.

Is it worth a buy? 100% yes, if for nothing else the hours of game play ahead is much better value for money than some of the dross out there.

Yes the game does make you feel tense and that is partly thanks to the environment which is dark bloody and simply gruesome.

Hiding is one big must for your chance of survival hiding as much as you can and as often as you can is recommended. Stealth walking and not making any noises is another must do to survive and walk past enemies without being detected. and of course looking around corners and paying attention to your enemies movement is again a must do every time.

The controls is a bit clunky and feels like it lags at times but again this could simply be my own experience. At first I found the camera annoying but I quickly got used to the camera movement. The graphics is not incredible and it is not terrible the graphics is fine. The Letter boxing effect used in this game is strange and unusual for a video game but it certainly does not effect the game in any way.

The Evil within might not be a game for everyone but it certainly is a good horror game and if you like these type of games then I'm certain you will enjoy the evil within. And if you get frightened very easily then I'm sure this game will make scare you.

I for one enjoy this game and think it is a good entry into the horror genre is it a game of the year contender I'm not sure on this one but it is certainly one of the best games of 2014.

Is the Evil Within a good game, or does it perhaps have more evil within it self than the actual story? Hell no, in fact it had quite a few problems ranging from pop in textures, slow down when you are runningIs the Evil Within a good game, or does it perhaps have more evil within it self than the actual story? The truth is, that for an old school gamer like my self that to this day still plays the original Resident Evil games, this game strikes home more than it misses. Is it perfect? Hell no, in fact it had quite a few problems ranging from pop in textures, slow down when you are running through rooms, and some other odd little moments that ended up getting me killed. Is it a horrible game though held back by its dated approach to design? Hell no again.

While it may have room for improvement, it rarely ever leaves you with a bad taste. Dying is a part of Evil Within. If you are a gamer that is seeking a game experience where your death is at the bottom of the bucket list, than this is not for you. Dying is a lesson, dying is an evolution in this game. It aims to improve you, sharpen your mind, and push you further with a firm hand.

While the scares of the game were not my type, (Gore, blood, and twisted character designs fail to ever get even the slightest shiver in me, then again I'm hugely bleached when it comes to horror games now anyway) it still had some fantastic designs for levels and enemies. I felt it had more of a mixture between Resident Evil 4 and Demon Souls, than lets say Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The moans and groans of enemies in hall ways made me feel like i was right next door to Demon Souls, or Dark Souls.

The Deaths I experienced, felt like they were my fault, just like in the Souls games as well.

Would I play this game again? Darn Tootin. In fact, this and Alien: Isolation has made me, a horror genre enthusiast, quite happy. I now have hours and hours of game play between these two gems of a game. If they are too hard, and you prefer feeling unstoppable in video games, than please move on to something else.

I do not want anyone getting upset at this game, when it clearly was never advertised as an action game, and I also do not want any ones weekend to be spoiled by something they really don't want!

While not quite living up to the heights of Mikami's Resident Evil golden age, it's some of his finest work and currently the best survival horror game this year and probably will be for a while to come.

People beware this is not an ACTION game, this is survival horror, so if your not a fan of survival horror give it a pass but if you like this genre than your in for a treat!

It has atmosphere and it always changing. Our hero cannot deal with everything, so sometimes he needs to run from enemies or hide. Also story, it's a mess in first episodes and story itself is nothing special. Some things are predictable, but you still need skills, to deal with the problems. You have guns, but ammo are limited.

    And game issues:
    1. Camera. If you played games on PS One, you will get used to it.
    2. Hero. He is damn slow and can run only for 3 seconds (you can upgrade, but it will add 2-3 seconds) and sometimes he just gets stuck in everything.
    3. Some enemies are freaking nightmare, like invisible ones, those sons of **** don't want to die and you can't see them unless you or they hit.
    4. Letterbox. You may get used to them, or absolutely hates them. In my case, I don't care as I don't care about 30 FPS and cross-gen graphics.

In the end, this game for fans, who know how to kill **** and deal with gameplay problems.

The Evil Within is the closest thing you'll get to survival horror that's less than 9 years old. Disregarding its simple story, boring characters, unfair death and last gen visuals, so far this is as good as it gets. It's genuinely scary, aesthetically beautiful and stresses you out as much as Resident Evil 4 did. This is a nightmare you won't soon forget.

First I'll start with what the game does right. The best parts make up most of the game, and that's why my score is so high. My favorite aspect was the gameplay. Gunplay, pacing, and a well designed HUD and learning curve all add up to be one of the most fun games I've played in a long time. The difficulty is higher than your average "dude bro" shooter, but its is fairly well balanced and (mostly) not cheap. There were a couple of boss fights that seemed very unfair to me, with one in particular resulting in ~15 deaths because of horrible level design. *Spoiler* That boss being the second encounter with Laura.

Another thing that deserves a lot of praise is the environments. The first 10 chapters of the game in particular is phenomenal. Creepy lakeside towns, a mysterious mansion, and a trap-riddled tomb are just a few of the many horrifying places you'll visit. The great soundtrack and audio design put these environments over the top and make you genuinely feel nervous, and sometimes tense or afraid.

Other positive things worth mentioning is the overall level design, awesome enemy design, immersive lighting, nods to past classic horror games, long replay values, and genuinely cool story (although it is admittedly shallow, more on that later).

On the downside, this game has several problems keeping it from being perfect, most notably the technical issues. There is painfully obvious texture popping, sometimes weird animations, frame stutters, inconsistent graphical quality, and the biggest culprit, the camera. The camera is the worst camera i've seen in years. It constantly shows Sebastian's back in a way that intrudes on your own view. Entering rooms will make you nervous because you can't see what's in there due to obstructed views. In confined spaces the camera will also collide with the environment, moving forward and back to adjust itself so as not to move behind walls or other meshes. It can be a struggle to get a good angle as you explore environments such as hallways, caves, houses, or other such enclosed areas. However I will note that shooting is a not affected here since it basically zooms in close enough to not bump into the environment.

Another problem is the shallow-ish story. The majority of the story is Sebastian's journey through the crazy world of The Evil Within, which is fine for what it is. If I had to compare this game's general storytelling to another game, it would be the first Gears of War. While both games have a great back story, they aren't necessarily told in game well or even at all. Sebastian's journal entries would have made for some great cut scenes or a great way to relate his troubles in throughout the game to his past. After reading them I at least felt some sort of attachment to him. In the end though, the game's gameplay and environments are enough to make it a great game.

The final chapter left me with some answers, but far more questions. Hopefully the dlc remedies this.

Overall this was a very fun but slightly flawed horror experience. I highly recommend it to any fans of survival horror or Resident Evil 4 (which it is obviously based on). It deserves closer to an 8.5, but I chose nine since the current rating is far too low.

Being consistently limited from resources and ammo as I travel through the games world and fighting creatures unlike anything I have seen in a game (shoots enemy in the head 4 times/ still standing and trying to kill you!).

The game has a few obvious problems. The graphics were very disappointing at times, at its best it looks like a good looking last gen game in a higher resolution. At its worst there is clipping and texture pop in, blurry, grainy draw distances.(And an incredibly annoying letterbox aspect ratio), there is a lot of stuff you need off the ground as well as a lot of dangers, limiting the players view was just plain stupid. As it doesn't add anything in the way of immersion or a "Movie" feel.
The story is a bit hit and miss. Its a vague Silent hill style story with an average payoff. But its the atmosphere that is what will keep you interested. As the vague story allows for the players to but tossed from one traditional scary location to the next. Its a bit nonsense but constantly changing locations keeps the game feeling fresh.

I think this game was made for the core survival horror fans, and it succeeds very well. Getting through a few minutes of the game feels like a victory as every part of the game brings new challenges. I really enjoyed the game, when I was swearing and about to throw my controller.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Survival horror is enjoying a new awakening by Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within.

Mikami has done. This is what should have been at the time Resident evil 4 and it really was not. The terror and tension are present in the game, we find enemies that we can not defend for lack of resources and our only option is to flee from them by stealth. A great atmosphere, gore, an interesting story and interesting characters and gameplay of RE4 with numerous improvements. His only blemishes are outdated technical section, a camera that is uncomfortable until it achieves the happy master and black stripes. Hopefully verifications the option to edit the latter two options using a patch because it is possible.

YES TEW is a survival horror. He has horror and tension, tries to frighten the player. It also has survival confront the enemies is not a good idea because it does not usually go well served health and normally bullets fail to kill all. We must find another way to kill and run away from enemies: Stealth. Which seems like a wise move.

What game has the action? And yeah? Obviously, there will come a time when we have the weapons and the character so much better to be inevitably destroy all enemies based shots. This also happens in survival horror classics like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, where now we have our pistols / shotguns / rifles / grenade launcher menu with an assortment of ammunition and plants / energy / aid kits / Sprays Drinks arrives. Although this depends on the player, always seems to be forgotten by the more nostalgic. This is what Mikami calls "Overcoming the horror".

On references to other games, references are elements and nods to Resident evil (Of course, since the game is the creator of it). A nod to Pyramid head ... and nothing else. All other elements are extracted culturilla general terror and Japanese mythology.

If you are able to ignore their minor flaws, you will enjoy with The Evil Within.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A strange game to be sure. What looked like a survival horror turned out to be a gory shooter. Not only did the game lack horror but the survival element was not good at all. Nothing AT All seemed like a threat (even the bosses) and the easy puzzles as well as the panic-less chase scenes made it get very repetitive very quickly especially later on as upgrades and more supplies make combat just boring and simple even though the enemies are cool. The game holds the player's hand WAY to much. There are also a lot of glitches and it just seems parts of the game lack refinement. However, the story (once it starts being actually told) is really cool and intriguing and despite an ending that still left a lot up in the air, the story itself made the game worth continuing even when the gameplay was getting dull. There is also tremendous detail in the environments and on the gamestyle. This had potential to be a fantastic game especially with its mind blowing story but a 12 hour game can simply not have that level of easiness and simplicity. Would not recommend for horror fans but for anyone looking for a unique experience with a great story, this is the game for you. Overall I enjoyed it. Expand

Or at least I could do that with my 3 years old Philips TV, but I still played the game from start to the end, with black bars on the top & bottom of the screen.

I also was scared by the comments of other players, that the controls are terrible, but gladly those comments proved wrong. During my 14 hours long campaign, I died 36 times, and none of them were result of controls, but rather by my own mistakes & carelessness.

The way the story is told, may be confusing, and feel little bit weak/strange. Characters are also flat. But if you don't focus too much at the story, you will still enjoy the ride that Evil Within delivers. Also the strange story gives the game a little bit freedom to have more variety with interesting and cool art/level design.

Graphics aren't that amazing, but worked very well for me, and looked sharp at 1080p resolution. Only downside is that without updating the game data with patches, game will be laggy.

Evil Within keeps you at your toes almost all the time, when ammo & suplies are scare, and you can't really never be sure about what waiting at you behind next corner. You have a lot of choices on how to upgrade your character, and many different enemy types with different tactics, and dangerous traps hidden in your surroundings, and nice rewards for those who care to explore every corner of the stage. Also at some points at the game you will also have more action packed chapters, but hard-core horror fans may be dissapointed by these gameplay sections.

Overall its a great game, if you don't set your hopes too high, and if you don't mind the strange story.

Overall I think this was a pretty good game the graphics are good cut scenes need a little work since their mouths don't move when they speak sometimes, kinda annoying but oh well. I will admit that the story was a little boring but not so boring that I wouldn't play it again.
but I do recommend you try the game before you're like "oh look at these bad ratings this game must be **** maybe rent it from Redbox or Gamefly try it see what you think. If you like it great if you don't okay.

I really liked it. The Evil Within is a good callback to horror games like Resident Evil 4. It was far better than RE5, RE:ORC, RE6. Story was kind of lacking emotion but I didn't hate it. Some of the voice acting was good but most of the line delivery was kind of dry and forced. Plenty of replayability to get all the trophies/achievements. Personally I think action-heavy survival horrorI really liked it. The Evil Within is a good callback to horror games like Resident Evil 4. It was far better than RE5, RE:ORC, RE6. Plenty of replayability to get all the trophies/achievements. Personally I think action-heavy survival horror games are not scary; So I can forgive the game for not being as frightening as games like Silent Hill, PT, Alien: Isolation or Amnesia. The game has very creepy and diverse environments, with some of my favorites towards the end. I'm not a fan of the resolution and sometimes the frame-rate drops but never to the point where its unplayable. Sometimes the textures look a bit dated, perhaps due to the game being cross-generational but the character models look great on next gen. The design of the enemies and environments I thought were spectacular. The gameplay itself was fine. On Nightmare and AKUMU I often felt moments of difficulty similar to Dark Souls. The aiming needed a bit of fine tuning but I managed to get used to it. The puzzles were kinda dumb and didn't require any critical thinking to figure them out, however it was nice to see the action broken up by occasional puzzle/story sections. The game itself is much longer than your average shooter and will take you anywhere between 10~25 hours to complete depending on your difficulty/skill. However you can speed run it in less than 5 hours.

All in all it was a much better experience then all the resident evil games but sub par compared to The Last of Us. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice modern callback to survival horror games or challenging games.

    Things I liked:
    + + Amazing atmosphere
+ + Interesting and unique environments
+ + Extremely fun and challenging on Nightmare/AKUMU
    + + Fantastic Enemy / Boss Design
    + A good length
    + A good antagonist
+ A fair amount of replayability.

    Things I didn't like:
    - Bland characters (for the most part).
    - Controls could of been betters.
    - Slightly dated graphics.
    - Story was kinda of hard to follow.
    - 1920x768 resolution is a strange fit.
    - Expensive season pass for DLC.

A return to roots per say for original RE creator Shinji Mikami and for the most part it worked. I really like the atmosphere and all the creative creature designs. The game I thought was too long clocking in around 18 HRS. But a lot of twists and turns and a very cool story makes it worth the ride.

This game is from the master of Survival-Horror, the man that gave us RE1 and RE4. It's a game from him in every aspect.
First stop, the beginning is slow, just like in RE1 and RE4. But after chapter 3 you get into the game. The story is weird, I wouldn't say it is awful, but it is not clear. Which most horror fans should like.

You could see this game as if Silent Hill and Resident Evil got a child named The Evil Within, REAL Survival-Horror fans will love this, because it combines the spooky atmosphere from Silent Hill with the gameplay from Resident Evil.
Mikami's touch is everywhere, the enemies are like the Resident Evil ones asfor the bosses and the boss fights.
But yeah, in conclusion, IF you are a survival horror fan you should pick this game up.

Pretty good, almost a guilty pleasure with just how much AAA **** there is in this game. The usual one-hit-kill stealth, action more than horror, and crafting but still ends up its own unique beast. Areas/sections of the game go all over the place from every horror cliches like hospitals, villages, ruin cities, etc. If you want a good story and likable characters, you're gonna hate this.

The Evil Within is a one-of-a-kind game. It blends many elements from past and current survival horror titles into an unforgettable experience. The interesting atmosphere and story, the varied areas and bosses. The combat is a bit clunky though and the traps sprinkled in every area may take a bit to get used to. If you can look past the few gameplay flaws, you'll have a blast.

The storyline, when I finally read the whole thing afterwards , is quite good. The problem lies in the fact that the player is not told many many things along the way. The story and writing are very cryptic . I have no idea with a good story like this why they decided not to tell the player more clearly what was going on.
So, it can be frustrating at times to not know what is really happening.
