Survive Mr. Cube is one of the more odd games that I was asked to review. You see, it sits on a balance of 50/50. For every good thing in the game there is one thing that can take it away. Now while you would wonder why I wouldn't just give it a 5 then and call it a day, I mean, it is right in the middle! There are a few things that make this worth a 7 definitely.

Now while you would wonder why I wouldn't just give it a 5 then and call it a day, I mean, it is right in the middle! There are a few things that make this worth a 7 definitely.

The main goal of the game is to find your way out of the deep dark cave that you found yourself in. Right off the bat you are greeted with nice art style, nice ambient music, and a very easy to grasp tutorial.

After this though some issues occur. The game is tough! at first! if you underestimate the cute chibi style characters you will quickly be dead and back at the beginning. But, once you stand your ground and gather enough items and equipment, you should get through easily enough. There are special encounters other than bosses, where you fight other people stranded in the same situation as you. They are much tougher than normal enemies but drop some pretty good loot upon death.

You do all of this while opening chests, collecting coins to buy things at the merchant when you die, and destroying enemy spawners so you can use them as portals until you get to the boss room. Beat the boss, continue to the next journey.

Here is the thing. I am not sure if it was an oversight, or just intended. But in the severely limited options menu, there is no save option. Now I don't mean a save scum option. many games allow you to make temp saves, which allow you to save, exit to menu, and come back later. Those saves also are deleted once you load in, to stop save "scumming".

The combat is fun, with a varied amount of weapons and items to have at your disposal, a lot of time was put into it, and I even caught a few pop culture references that did get a laugh out of me. My only concern is that since attacking uses your stamina, it is unfortunate that the sensitivity is so high that barely touching the right stick causes you to swing. However, if they updated the game to allow some controller options, this would be a complaint that is completely fixable.

It Is disappointing that I enjoyed the music in the game but there is so little in it. I would like to see more available.

Being created by three people this game really does have potential. It is a port of the IOS game of the same name, and now that it has been introduced to consoles, I would love to see the developers focus on consoles first if they ever make a sequel. Even giving it a 7/10, I can recommend it to anyone who just wants a fun and simple dungeon crawler on the cheap.

This game is pretty hard. It make me crazy. However, pretty fun enough. I would like to recommend it to people who like classics, actions, adventure and rogue like games.

Survive! Mr.cube is a simple and somewhat inspired take on the twin stick, and rogue-lite genres. While initially frustrating due to less than capable characters you will eventually enjoy a playthrough with a protagonist which will allow you to enjoy the game as it is meant to be enjoyed. I'd say it's part Diablo in design, and carries with it a clean cut indie flair that is all it's own.Survive! Mr.cube is a simple and somewhat inspired take on the twin stick, and rogue-lite genres. For me it's worthy of a recommendation, and with the price point accounted for you'll definitely be getting your money's worth. Also to note it's one of the easiest games to platinum. Expand

Survive! Mr. Cube. I bought this game because it is a favorite genre game. It seems to be a light enjoyable game. When I first started playing, it felt a bit difficult, but I enjoyed playing with characters that change every time I die. Playing for about two hours would get all the trophies, so I could save the effort to get the trophy.
It is a game to play as a whole.

I have to say, as a light-gamer but also a platinum trophy hunter myself
It was amazing to just lay back and enjoy running around like a child.
It's fascinating and exciting to find out what is the characters that lies between each and every death that i make inside the game. It is very easy to earn the trophy if you wish, and i would highly recommend for users who wants to get some

To be honest, I think the characters are really cute even if the game is pretty hard. Due to Rogue-lite genre,it gave me a serious pain but once I understand how the system works it is quite interesting. The game is definitely for trophy hunters as it took less than 2 hours for me to get platinum. I highly recommend it to light gamers. Best game ever for killing time. Caution! Kind of fun but it needlessly runs at a locked low framerate and low resolution. Even on the PS5 it runs like crap

Roguelikes have been around for decades, but in recent years the rouge-lite genre has become very popular. These involve elements of roguelikes, typically the procedurally generated portion, allowing for seemingly infinite replayability as no playthrough is the same as the last. Survive! Mr. Cube is a simple game that places you in the role of the titular Mr. Cube. He's tasked with leaving an alternate dimension he's ended up in, and the only way out is through hordes of monsters and other people trapped within it. You can move, attack, and use the potions the game offers. This is the first rogue-lite I've played where I almost beat the game in my first attempt - some poor reaction time resulted in my untimely death just before the last boss. But by the time I had started the first level with the second character, I had 90% completion for the trophy list – I was only missing the accomplishments for five deaths and killing the dimension defender. It's not as if I had some overpowered character, as I started with a rusty sword.

When exploring the levels, you'll find a number of enemies and chests to loot. The game is kind enough to let you know if there will be a trap, such as a mimic or a poison gas cloud. Your weapons have an unlimited amount of uses; this makes things like the Winchester seem overpowered. Each weapon uses stamina, but it regenerates fairly quickly. Even Mr. Cube's health will regenerate over time, although it's hardly necessary with the number of potions you'll come across while playing. In addition to potions for health and stamina, there's one for boosted agility and enhanced strength. These both last a short period of time, but chances are you won't require them too long after you use them.

Pretty much every weapon or attack you face from enemies can be used by yourself, either from starting with it, purchasing it from the merchant between deaths using the gold you acquired, or by killing another cube person. These fights will likely be the most difficult that you face depending on what they have. Each one has a different strategy for victory, and while I was able to take down the Winchester enemy early on, I fell to him at the end of the game in my first run. Facing these cubes not only serve as an added challenge, but show you just how each weapon can be used; when they get absolutely destroyed by what you're using, it's likely you won't be switching. You can carry two weapons at once, so it's good to have two different types, such as a long range and a melee combination. This means you're ready for whatever the game throws at you, although having a short range burst weapon and a long range weapon with pinpoint accuracy is also a good way to go.

For a genre that is often seen as time consuming and difficult, this game shatters that concept. While some may struggle with it, chances are you won't find much trouble if you're familiar with similar games. Merely running to the towers you need to defeat to move on worked out for me in the first level, although attacking enemies as they came was much more fruitful as I progressed. The levels themselves all feel almost identical, with some minor changes to the environment and color palette. You’ll spend 90% of your time wandering around looting chests (and special gold chests) as you look for the next gateway out. Looking at your map you can see how many paths there are (similar to Portal Knights), with some rooms having only one, meaning you'll likely be backtracking.

There's not a whole lot to Survive! Mr. Cube. While complexity is hardly a necessity for a rogue-lite, the main draw is to keep coming back to do better next time. If you're able to beat it after a couple of tries with very little difference between playthroughs other than the character you play as, that aspect is abandoned quickly and you're left wanting more from the game. However, if you're looking for a quick platinum trophy, you could do a lot worse than this. The game is enjoyable enough, but it could be fleshed out quite a bit to make it more memorable.

Mr Cube is a very simple rogue-lite game, where when you die you start anew and you only keep the money your farmed (money even stays after multiple deaths, its not a one currency). Every time you die, you will be re-created as a new Cube randomly (your starting weapon will be different). You fight your way through a maze until you reach the final exit and stand your ground against a boss.

Each tile of the maze consists of a map full of monsters, treasure chests and each having a small boss unit in it. Every map is either a dead-end or has portals to other nearby tiles of the maze. Enemies re-spawn pretty quickly while you smash them with swords, axes, hammers, bows, magic wands and more.

The game runs smooth but it is very simple in its style and appearance. Everything has a pixel art style. The soundtrack is really thin and gets boring fast.

After all the game can be worthwhile for a few hours and that is it. I finished the maze on my third try leaving me - quite ironically - only with one more trophy to go "Die 5 times". If you like rogue-lites and can grab the game for 5-10 bucks max then go for it. Otherwise I would spend my money for something else. I was unsure between rating it 6 or 7 but the game is just really really simple and there are other genre titles that achieve much more for nearly the same price thus leading me to rating it down.

In its current state, Survive! Mr. Cube doesn’t have enough juice to be a solid recommendation to roguelike fans. More than anything, it feels like a beta that still needs six more months. I don’t want to sound too harsh, though – this small team of devs is 100% on the right track, and with more resources, more polish and a little more depth, I could easily see this one becoming a favorite. I hope they keep at it.
