Patience is key to this game; take your time and get into the atmosphere. The music and atmosphere is amazing; the story is top notch and for a game that is 16 years old, the graphics are great. I especially like Shenmue II as it is bigger but each location has it's benefits. Enjoy!

It´s really hard to believe there was released a game like this almost 20 years ago.
Shenmue it´s the equivalent to the Egyptian Pyramids, it could have been done by extraterrestrials.

Talking to every NPC felt so real, sometimes they knew the path to your destination, sometimes they did not. You could ask for a job and make money, etc. Ryo is an attaching character, he's using his strenght when necessary (arm wrestling is necessary when you need money lol) and always looking for the truth. And i wish he will find out more in the third part, with or without help, because that's how Ryo is, he never slows down. Expand

In spite of their age (originally released 1999-2001), 'Shenmue I & II' are still doing things right that even recent video games are getting wrong. There's no hand-holding (such as map pointers, a side-quest checklist or glowing objects) and the games trust the player to use their initiative and intelligence to explore a virtual world that truly feels alive, refusing to bombard them with instructions or other distractions, such as repetitive random battles that stop feeling intense and start to feel routine. There's always a build up to the action, making it far more effective.

Players are given just the right balance between freedom and restriction, so that they cannot cause the protagonist to break character, but are able to decide when and why he chooses to perform the many side activities made available to him outside of the core plot. Activities in 'Shenmue I' include thorough training, playing arcade games, playing darts, collecting capsule toys, collecting and listening to cassette tapes, chatting to the locals (literally every NPC has fully voiced dialogue and a unique backstory, along with their own daily schedule), checking the weather, feeding an orphaned kitten and collecting move scrolls.

The game has a very particular day and night cycle. Date and time will dictate weather conditions, store opening times, bus times and scripted events. 1 hour in game time is equal to 4 minutes time in the real world, meaning 12 game hours in equal to 48 real life minutes. It's up to the player to decide how they use their free time in this world, meaning each player's game can be very different to another's. The immersion factor is heightened by the fact that players can heavily interact with the environment in a non-destructive way. The environment is there to affect the player, not the other way around.

'Shenmue II' features many additional mini-games, along with a slightly altered in-game clock.

The fighting engine in 'Shenmue I & II' is a brilliant enhancement of the 'Virtua Fighter' engine, based on careful timing and stringing together moves to create a combo. Unlike 'Virtua Fighter', the battles in 'Shenmue I & II' see the protagonist take on multiple enemies at once. When learning new moves, players will always be given realistic instructions ("shift your weight forward") rather than being told to press a particular button and having their immersion ruined.

The soundtrack to both titles is vast and varied in styles, and is an outstanding piece of work in its own right. QTEs are used both appropriately and effectively as a means of adding interactivity where there would otherwise be none, keeping the player on their toes with great sound effects use.

Events that many video games would restrict to a non-interactive cut-scene are given heavy interactivity in 'Shenmue I & II', helping the player become far more immersed and invested in what's going on. When the protagonist is put through a trial of patience and level headedness, the player endures that trail with him, being affected by the trial in the process. It's a perfect balance between storytelling and interactivity that proves there is, in fact, great artistic potential in video games.

'Shenmue I & II' are not the standard video games that you breeze through and then allow to collect dust. They are a personal journey for the player and must be savoured over time. They require some dedication, but that dedication pays off big time in the end. It gives you a highly personal experience that will stay with you forever. Don't miss out!

Now for the other part.. D3T did a decent job at porting the game to PC, XB1, and PS4... However they clearly had far too big of a job for the tiny company that they were. They shipped the game with quite a few bugs, Most of them don't break the game but they are annoyances for a superfan who wants to see everything run smoothly. It does however run smoothly, especially when comparing it to the dreamcast and xbox versions. However occasions do pop up where things that clearly should have been noticed by the developers will catch your eye. This game has 2 trophies on PS4 and some pretty easy trophies/achievements. I wish it was a little more of a challenge to be honest.

You really have to put yourself in the shoes of a gamer from back then to overlook things like graphics and animations. These are all things that were above average at the time so before playing Shenmue, imagine you’ve never played an open world game, because this is where it began!

In 1999, all I heard was there’s this real life game with realistic people and a world you live in. For example when I finally got to a fight I was like “so you can actually free-fight in this game too, nice!’ Even you yourself, after about an hour or 2 into the game might ask yourself what on Earth you’re meant to do; walking around asking people things and trying to find this man who killed your father and at the same time trying to determine what genre this game is, a beat-em-up or what? Bit by bit you start to realise Shenmue is about enjoying the experience and not labelling it with any genre you just play it.

The problem is where some people now will play this and mock the graphics, speech, the old school controls, when gamers in 1999 played it the impressions were the opposite, the graphics were incredible, the dialogue was hysterical, the way people spoke was so funny, and it was in the games favour since it was out of the ordinary to do this in a video game. It was all new, knocking on a random door, I didn’t even know about these minor details that are not be relevant to completing the game, but add to the realism.

Shenmue was a test in a way, you would test just how much you could actually do to the point where you can say ‘ah, bound to happen, it is after all just a game’. Just simple things like knocking on a vacant door 2 or 3 and smiling to not receive the same dialogue straight way, a smile to think ‘clever touch Sega’. Ryo could just robotically reply with the same answer again and again but it’s altered and makes Ryo seem like a real person.

You go in a shop and it has things you can buy, but to buy a packet of crisps or some fish that you can’t actually do anything with will make you wonder what is the use? But the fish can be fed to kitten, or the milk, and items that have no relevance once bought can win you a raffle that will reward you with a prize which still you can select in the pause menu and rotate in a 3D view just for the sake of it. That’s questionable as whether there is any use in doing this but the answer is simple. If you couldn’t do any of this people would say look there’s a shop but you can’t buy anything so why’s it there? Sega decided to let people purchase things.

The beauty of it is you don’t even have to do these things. You can leave the old lady at the start of the game in the park forever waiting, because she won’t find the Yamamoto house unless you find it! But the choice you get is what shenmue is about, you can help her, you’ll get a nice little cutscene and makes you think would you do it in real life? A way of life is to help people and the reward is a small gesture or a thank you to remind yourself that being a good person is the only real reward.

I actually didn’t want to complete Shenmue after getting into the story, I was really more enjoying the adventure and meeting new people, travelling to new places. The detail in this game will make you understand how a smaller environment with more detail is better than a massive world with empty space. You can spend as long searching every room and cupboard or drawer in Ryo’s house than you can driving from one end of GTA V’s map to the other. There’s places in Dobuita I didn’t even realise were there until the second play through. Both games also feature some of the most beautiful music in any game or even film. Such touching and mesmerising music.

Shenmue 2 now is where things get more interesting. You don’t get an allowance from Ine-san, you haven’t got a place to stay, you’re out there in your own and surrounded by unfriendly people. You start off like that and gradually start to realise life alone is hard. You get robbed, you’re in a new country. And it really gives you a good sense of being on an adventure. There’s more fighting in this one, and it’s just a bigger version of the first game.

One complaint is that the game requires patience and is dragged out but I’ve managed to steam through Shenmue 1 in 2 days so it’s not as tedious as made out to be. For comparison I recently bought ZOoT on the 3ds and gave up half way through due to boredom and that was one of my greatest gaming experiences but Shenmue hasn’t bored me out yet.

I give this a 10 and nothing less, it’s not just a game it’s an experience and I recommend it to everyone, I was 15 when I got it and loved it, I’m now 32 and still love this game. There’s some negative reviews, but some people like butter and some don’t. Give it a try, you wont regret it.

The games also rock some of the best-looking graphics for gaming in 1999. As a warning: both games have a deliberately slow pace. This is a series built for immersion and exploration and not for fast progression replete with action, guns or explosions with a mini-map, glowing trails and a checkpoint system. The games dare to drop you into a vast virtual world to explore at your leisure and refuses to hold your hand, even forcing you to wait for certain shops to open, meet a character at a particular time or complete mundane tasks to complement its virtual life-simulator experience. However, if you can appreciate the refreshingly deliberate slow-pace, the intriguing story and the profoundly immersive environments, these are some fantastic golden oldies to enjoy, right up there with Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7. Shenmue 1 and 2 is an easily over 20 hour long collection of the remastered versions of Dreamcasts 1999 Shenmue and 2001s Shenmue 2
Shenmue 2 having aged much better especially with its audio recording but both still having their problems…
The story starts with your father being killed… you play as a teenage martial artist named ryo hazuki, and you search the streets of japan and later Hong Kong during the late 1980s in search of answers… following the trail of your fathers killer…
The Shenmue games are very unique, this was my first time playing both and I had no idea what to expect..
But this is very much a life simulation game… in both games it’s a lot of finding the right person to talk to.. Only for them to tell you to go to this person, who will tell you to go to that person... it’s a never ending wild goose chase... this is the majority of the gameplay... it’s a lot of living life… memorizing the town streets as you don’t really get a map anywhere close to what we’ve been spoiled with in the modern age of gaming, you’ll do a lot of reading the maps on the streets to get an idea of how to get to the building the person or people you’re after are staying…
occasionally doing quick time event sequences, or fighting.. but these are very occasional…
it is primarily passing time, waiting for stores and bars to open, immersing yourself into the world you find yourself in and you’re going to find this really boring like I did, or you’re going to really appreciate how great of a job this game does at making you feel like you’re living another life.. In Shenmue 2 there’s more focus on earning cash, so you’ll have to do jobs to pay for rent…
onto the issues though… Shenmue 1s audio quality sticks out like a sore thumb, however I found it to add a bit of charm and was so ridiculous I was laughing the whole way through my play through…
the most irritating thing Is the lack of progression indictors... the lack of maps and arrows... this is mostly because ive been spoiled.. but it’s important to note your hand won’t be held here… you’ll take notes in a journal that you’ll have to refer to to know where to go and then it’s up to you to find a map to know where this place is if you don’t remember it from passing… im also not a big fan of having to wait for time to pass for things to open… I would have to just set my controller down and walk away, wait for a shop or bar to open for example... you can sleep in this game once it gets late, but that’s the only time, you cant do it at will… on the shenmue 2 side.. moving around the cities and in buildings is just awful, you feel so still, having to walk all the way up a stairway so you can turn back around instead of being able to do it mid stairway for example… gets super annoying in a game that’s all about trying to get from point a to point b off of memory..
That being said, the world is so intriguing, especially in Shenmue 2… the different characters and wonder will pull you through if you’re into the idea of living another life... but that life much like real life can feel slow and drug out at times…

It’s just too bad the developers couldn’t have done a little something special for this rerelease. At least cleaning up the audio would have been nice.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing, memories of games from our childhood tend to paint them in a better light than they actually were. I was caught up in the hype for the re-release of Shenmue and took a few days off work to play it. Is Shenmue the same amazing game i remember? Well, looking at through my adult eyes, it is barely a game at all, more of an interactive experience.

There is a world i remember being huge which is still impressively dense with shops, characters and interactivity, it feels real and living and is still a monumental achievement. The problem playing in 2018 for me is, it's not fun at all to play. As i hang around for in game hours waiting for the next scene to play out i remembered how bored I was as a child paying this and what a slog it was at times. The lack of actual gameplay is something people rarely talk about, all you really do it run around picking things up or talking to npc's and occasionally have a fight or quick time event. In 1999 this was new, interesting and exciting and broke new ground. Playing it now I realise this is not fun to play, hear me out I don't think it is meant to be fun in a way. You are playing as a kid who's dad was murdered after all. The most frustrating element of the game is still it doesn't explain anything at all which can be a huge frustration and a huge positive. Discovering the Phoenix Mirror is rewarding but missing out on huge chunk of the game because you don't know to go to a certain bar at a certain time or interact with everything to find a new move is just annoying. I understand the design of the game is realistic, almost mundane in it's realism to ground you in the real world but I just find it infuriating knowing i'm missing out on so much just because the game wont act like a videogame, if that even makes sense.

If you have never experienced Shenmue, you should try it, just be realistic with your expectations of what the game is going in. If you have the time to put in and don't mind the frustrations of the waiting and quirks of a videogame that isn't really a videogame.

Shenmue is still a masterpiece in world design, interactivity and ballsy originality in design and has to be commended and respected for what it did in 1999, playing in 2018 shows that almost 20 years later there is still nothing quite like it.

Game is barely playable in 2018. Story is nothing special. Graphics is ugly. Sound and voice acting are terrible. Port is lazy. I can't understand why there are so many 10/10 scores. If you want life simulation game, you better play Kingdom Come. If you want game about Japan with fun mini games and crazy fights you better play Yakuza 0 or 5.

I would really like this game but QTE:s have ruined all games they have been. In this game it is probably made worst than any other game. I hope they would use a game tester in development. They repeatedly fail until memorize them and they prevent to enjoy when watching cutscenes because has to concentrate to look if there goes a pop up somewhere.

Shenmue 1 is enjoyable as it's fun to explore a Japanese neighborhood, slowly learning the layout of the town, meeting the locals and finding clues to proceed with my investigation. The big con is that some sections just go on... and on... and on... it's also crazy how sometimes I had to wait 40 real minutes so i could then go to sleep and wait and another real 30 minutes so I could proceed with the story. The story is also... kind of underwhelming. I could summarize it in a few sentences very easily and of course the voice acting is hilariously bad at time.

Shenmue 2 has much better pacing, the ability to wait as a means of advancing the time quickly and a much improved story. However... the QTE's.... oh god... the damn QTE's... I've never found this mechanic to be so annoying in any other game. It made me just want to quit at points. The game is also packed with filler. At one point you need to go to the top of a building but you can't take an elevator or quickly move up the stairs... you have to fight on every single floor or take part in some annoying stealth section or deal with more QTE's... getting to the top of one building ends up taking hours as a result. The final section of the game is also very slow and kind of dull. It's not the climax I was hoping for.

Overall my biggest complaint... these games don't respect your time... you could easily edit them down... shortening each from a 20 hour experience to a 15 hour game... or maybe even 10. I hope shenmue 3 can build on the story, the characters, the world and the combat... and avoid mundane and repetitive tasks, filler and annoying QTE's.

It's the software personification of the dreamcast IMO. Just as Dreamcast symbolizes the end of a hardcore gaming era whilst trailblazing the future of the industry(for better or worse), Shenmue is the prime software example of this. A beautifully animated character driven narrative focused open world game, now of which are a dime a dozen, but with arcadish gameplay and a sense of immersion that still has yet to be matched 18 years later.

Absolutely everything about Shenmue, just like the dreamcast itself, was painfully detailed and no effort was spared. It also pioneered and/or popularized so many common modern gaming tropes its astounding. So much that we take for granted today was absolutely breathtaking with the release of Shenmue...

The above is my review for the Dreamcast versions... unfortunately these new ports suffer from awful glitches that really ruin the experience. Sega clearly rushed this out to capitalize on the hype and used a **** dev team with a horrible track record to do it...

This is something of a mixed bag. On one hand, I love that I can now play these great games on the playstation with all its added convenience, but at the same time, the release is pretty poor. The remaster quality is a 6 but with the games, it seems unfair to go with that. Its a light 7.

When I initially got the game I was excited to jump into it and I enjoyed it for a solid few hours. After that however I didn't quite have the same enthusiasm and noticed the problems. The sound is pretty bad at times and the clunky controls have aged, which is the same for a lot of the game. As great as the game is, its been nearly 20 years so a better remaster is deserving. The game has shown its age unfortunately. The world of Shenmue, its streets, its shops, are no longer groundbreaking or ever exciting. I was fully aware that it wouldn't be what I remember, but the long waits, the walking back to sleep, only to walk back the next morning can feel like a slog. Its a shame the release is just a basic port as it makes these issues more apparent.

Had the graphics and audio been given a nice improvement and the controls refined, it would be an 8 or 9, Shenmue are great games, I can't deny that, but I just wish there was something here which could elevate the game from just playing on a dreamcast besides the fact it looks fine on a nice big tv. If you missed Shenmue, then its worth it, but you have to accept that it won't live up to other recent re-releases

I still find new things I never experienced... new cutscenes I never have seen after alll these years people still encountering new things .. how is that possible for a 20 year old game ! Think about it ... that is incredible ...

Now let’s talk about this copy .. this copy though it did have some really poor audio Bugs , cutscene bugs it has since been patched and runs pretty flawlessly .. I enjoyed my time with it be it going to arcade , training , darts , gambling , or just interacting with people looking for new things to find .. I feel there is more than meets the eye to this game .. it’s an experience I feel that many today will not appreciate , and it is sad that many people who were alive when this game came out did not get a chance to try it ... pick up this game .. play it as if you are in 1998/2000s ... try to see what people who played this game saw for the time ... graphics hold up ok . Game play can be a bit clunky walking around ... combat well combat is based off of virtua fighter ... i always thought tekken was better though.. it is a decent game which is under appreciated and will continue to be under appreciated because today’s day and age this type of game really can’t exist ... we moved on and gone to bigger and better things .

At this point it’s fair to say the HD port of Shenmue I & II is in better shape than its release and would now be considered acceptable to play. Save data transfer and cutscenes were a big problem, and major bugs seem to be patched out. Both games are here in all their glory and probably the best way to spend your time with Ryo as he follows his journey. Veterans will be happy with the ability to play on modern platforms and newcomers finally have a chance to experience what Shenmue has to offer while Yu Suzuki is hard at work on Shenmue 3.

Playing Shenmue I & II is a treat for die-hard fans as well as an accessible way for newcomers to experience these renowned titles, though they won't be for everyone. Even though I enjoyed both games, I really struggled to look past the clunky dialogue or even fully invest in Ryu's story, and the controls sometimes made walking around a nightmare. They're seminal products of their time that deserve to be celebrated, and this port does a great job of delivering that authentic Shenmue experience.
