Rebel Galaxy shows you a lot of what you want in an open world space RPG/Adventure, but doesn't quite fulfill everything I would have hoped.

I am a little surprised you can do as well in a fight as you do from the get-go when you supposedly are getting a semi-poor quality ship, but can be fine in almost every fight. I wish it had forced you into more smuggler/run-away tactics than the straight full-frontal combat I used, but you could always just do that anyways.

The errand-palooza the game is mission-wise can get a bit dull, but thankfully you can take the missions/combat in different ways so you can make the endless "run here, now run here" grind more interesting.

I enjoy the dialogue system, I just wish what I said actually meant something, where what you actually have here is the choice between either being a jerk or just getting to the point and starting the mission.

The graphics are phenomenal, and I honestly had the most fun running around getting into space fights and discovering locations in the galaxy, rather than going through the mission grind.

A decent space game, that fell short for me, but has a lot of good qualities. I do find myself jumping on periodically if I want to just mess around and blow stuff up, much like I do in GTA, but other than that I would mostly say you can pass on this one.

I got this free with my PS+ subscription this month. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect. But from the soundtract, to the way I play the game, I'm getting a real Firefly vibe out of it. Anyone that would appreciated roaming around assassin's creed 4 just being a pirate will enjoy this game immensely.

The space battles can be pretty exciting. And while at first it does feel weird that you can't move vertical, i got used to it pretty fast and it doesn't bother me at all anymore. There's tons of stuff to do, from trading to pirating to mining, to hunting bounties, discovering new locations, looking out for distress calls, etc... Buying and upgrading new ships is pretty addictive as usual. The game is really worth the price and there's a lot of fun to be had if you can look past the flaws. Expand

If Sea Dogs and Freelancer had a baby, that would be Rebel Galaxy and for me that is a very good thing.

I didn't start playing the game with high expectations but it started to grow on me later on.
The space combat itself is well done, the graphics are pretty decent, the sound design is really accurate to a space game and on top of all, the ships that you get to pilot on your journey are pretty awesome.

The story isn't a big deal so don't expect much, but it is there and it does offer content. I ended up playing the game for around 15-20 hours, doing trades, side quests, main quests that enabled me to get one of the best ships in the game full with weapons and upgrades.

One of the things I found interesting in the game is that the ships that you get to use aren't necessarily better than the others. Each one of them has some pros and cons and they do feel different from each other. The reason why the ships aren't necessarily better it's because the upgrades of the ship such as: weapons, shields, hull, deflectors, components, etc can work on any ship that you have.
So for example if you prefer a Light or Heavy Frigate and you upgrade it with full weapons and shields that have a good level, you can actually take out way bigger ships than yours.
If you decide to buy a destroyer class ship, it offers you more weapon slots but restraints more of your speed and maneuverability.

The selection of ships you can buy is pretty good and most of the game you'll be busy finding ways of collecting credits to purchase/upgrade them. There are plenty of ways to obtain credits either by doing main quests, side quests, faction quests, finding out certain abandoned space stations that you can hack for a discount in stores, or for materials lost in your system.
You can also trade, by purchasing and selling goods or, if you wish to play more as a pirate, you can ambush merchant ships and steal their goods then resell them. Mining is also in the game and you can either mine an asteroid field for goods or you can attack the miners and steal their cargo.

There are several factions in the game but mostly it's just the Militia and the Citizens and on the other side are the Pirates each with their own group. Both of the factions have their own space stations and depending on your friendship with them, you can dock at their base and purchase some of their ships or weapons which are exclusive only to their faction.

I was really impressed by the size of the ships in the game. You really start with a low yet still decent ship and as you explore around and check the Shipyard you will notice other, better ships than your own that are also larger in size. After changing the system I was currently in, I was surprised that the ships I thought were large, were only a fragment compared to the Dreadnoughts and Destroyers, and damn it feels good to own one of those.

You can also recruit various Wingmen that you can find on space stations to help you out in the game as they're pretty useful earlier on. The downside to this is that you can only recruit one wingmen at a time which I didn't really like and later on when you'll be doing some harder quests, they fall off rather quickly as you cannot upgrade their ships like you can do with your own.

If you wanted a game where you can pilot a capital ship or a massive ship, this game is definitely for you.
While not perfect, anyone who enjoys a space game would definitely find things to like in Rebel Galaxy. There's content all around and things for you to do, though for the most part you will just end up shooting things as that it's the main focus and the best quality of the game.

+ Fun challenging and tactical gameplay.
+ Various ships to purchase each with their own pros and cons.
+ Multiple ways of obtaining credits.
+ Feeling awesome as you take down bigger ships than your own or owning one yourself.
+ Space battles are pretty addictive to part take in.
+ A pretty good AI to put up with your efforts that will punish you unless you go into a mission prepared.

    - After you obtain what's best in the game, which should take around 15-20 hours depending on what you do, you'll end up with little else to do in the game.
    - Short story overall.
    - The systems are different in looks but not enough to discern them like in Freelancer.
    - Unable to recruit more than one wingmen.

If you like spaceships, battles and all that, I would highly recommend it to you as there are plenty of things here to keep you going. The game shouldn't be too expensive and it's definitely worth a shot.

Looking forward to a sequel improving and adding more to this already good quality package of a game.

This is the weakest part of the game, as the controls feel a little clumsy, at it isn't as fun as having complete 3D freedom.

Yeah, maybe it's tied to a 2-axis plane that lends itself to naval combat more than actual space combat, but it's forgiven for the elegance of its interface and overall execution. It's more action oriented than EVE Online, but not a total arcade-style shooter in the Colony Wars vein. It has an in-game economy, but it's not as demanding as Elite.

This is good stuff, and should hold you over nicely until No Man's Sky drops.

This is the nearest we have come to a space RPG with Firefly-vibes yet - and considering its bargain price point, I'll give it a 8/10 for that achievement alone. Could use some more variation, though. Would be a 10/10 if you could actually land on some planets and do some in-person quests there.

In addition to the 2D movement problem, Rebel Galaxy has a movement issue generally. Travelling is slow, and on the first mission, you have to make a painfully long trip around a giant star. Then you make another trip around the start to return to base. More frustrating, the second mission has you take the same exact trip. Get some podcasts ready.

The gist of the game is pretty clear. You run missions to get better gear so you can run more missions and get better gear. Maybe at some point in the game you solve some mystery or have some other feeling of accomplishment. In the meantime, the game is all about rinse and repeat. This isn't a terrible game play option, and good game play is fun in repetition. The problem with Rebel Galaxy is that travelling and fighting on a 2D plane will always be uninspiring and boring. Maybe it's a been there, done that feeling I have. I feel the same way about the upgrade system. Unless the upgrades change the gameplay, they might as well not exist. If this were my first 2D space exploration game, I may be more charitable, stressing the "may be".

I think the game would actually be better as a top down game with loading screens or cartoonish speed for travelling between systems. As a psuedo-3D game, Rebel Galaxy looks cheap and dated. The text boxes that were transfered from PC don't help. I think of a game like Helldivers, that is really just an old school twin stick shooter, but made more fun with it's unique art style and concessions to reality. What I would really want out of 2D space exploration game is a better looking and better playing Star Control.

Rebel Galaxy offers a large galaxy to explore but much of it is just empty space and as a result travelling to any point of interest takes far too long, even with the game allowing you to travel at so called 'warp speed'. The option to instantly travel to a location would really have helped out on this front. It does provide the player with plenty of things to do (mining, smuggling and combat etc) but, as I said above, none of them are better than average at best. The combat for example only move in two dimensions, making the whole space aspect a little redundant, and everything is all just too slow.

A further issue that impacted upon more enjoyment of Rebel Galaxy is the fact that the game requires a fair amount of 'grinding'. As early as just the third main story mission I found myself completely overpowered by the enemies I was supposed to attack and so had to take on side missions in order to upgrade my ship to the required level.

Rebel Galaxy shoots for the stars but falls short.

Naval warfare in FLAT space. Blatant star wars rip off. Weird voice acting. Boring missions that take ages to get between. On the plus side its pretty, as you spend ages flying straight to collect whatever it is u need, only to spend ages flying back. Endless MONOTONY. Weapons that barely damage ships, leading to tiring boring battles. Soundtrack is alright I guess.

It makes a good transition from PC to console, but Rebel Galaxy was far too vapid and uninspired to be a really stand out game in the first place. While that means it's not terrible, it's also a complete waste of what the far reaches of outer space offers for creative narrative, and this is deeply disappointing.

Rebel Galaxy is a streamlined take on the space sim that while nowhere near as complex as its PC peers still has enough going on to keep you more than entertained. It's a real shame then that despite its enjoyable ship-to-ship combat, interesting setting, and fantastic soundtrack, it ultimately ends up being tarnished by a repetitive grind that needlessly pads out its length.
