If you enjoy the psychonauts universe, you probably won't be disappointed with this. It isn't as good as it could be but definitely worth playing.

I was quite positively surprised by "Psychonauts in The Rhombus of Ruin", given the underwhelming reviews. As mentioned by others, it is a classical Point'n Click adventure in VR. I cannot say that I was thrilled by the story, but it was good enough to keep me interested. I would give it a 7. Environments are varied and interesting to look at. There are many great ideas. Moreover, the limits of the current VR technology are not visible. A 10 for me. I liked the sound and voices. Though, I cannot remember anything particular exciting. But, there is also nothing to complain about. So, I give it a 10. I also cannot remember any background music. There is a great title song, though. Anyway, I would not give a score for the music, given the small scope. The game mechanics are simple but work very well. You can travel by telepathy from person to person and observe the scenery from different positions. To interact with objects they are simply focused. I played seated, which is presumably the typical way to play this game, and occasionally I was missing controls to turn the camera, in particular to look backwards. Therefore I would lower the score to 9. There are a few puzzles in the game, which are a bit too simple. But with respect to the length of the title, this works well enough. At least I did not get bored. I would give a 7 for the game-play, since I see room for making this more interesting. I played through during one evening. I would say the length perfectly matches the content. No section is stretched or crammed in my opinion. Summing this all up leads to an average score of 8.6 which is dominated by the great presentation.

In summary, a very well designed short game in a wonderful package. Personally, I was not interested too much in the story and would not have minded slightly more challenging puzzles. But in total I was entertained. Thus, I would recommend the game provided the prize matches its short length.

Magnificent game if you like old Point'n'Click adventures. All the Lucas magic adapted to a new generation. If you're seeking an action game then stay away, but if you love series like Monkey Islands, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Atlantis and so on you will enjoy the experience of your life. The game has that art style so particular to this games that every fan will enjoy, and the ambience is very very good. Only flaw it's not extremely long, but heck, it's only 17$.

Hope to see more games like this, a remake of Maniac Mansion, Day of Tentacle or Monkey Island for VR could be glorious.

I agree with gusman, the adventure genre works perfectly and I would like to see more like this. I usually get sick when playing VR games, but this was perfectly fine. Good puzzles, mostly - and a fun experience all the way. Highly recommended.

I was looking forward to playing this, but the gameplay wasn't that interesting or fun. The VR component was also not as good as other games. The plot seemed really random if you are not familiar with the psychonauts universe. A pretty mediocre game besides the enjoyable cartoony Psychonauts aesthetics.

To start off, I love Psychonauts and I love VR games, so this review is not meant to be biased, but this game falls well within my interests and feels almost made for me.

It turns out that Psychonauts can be translate effectively into VR, surprisingly enough, by moving it from a platformer to something more like a Point & Click adventure game. In this game, you possess the minds of different characters who effectively become your adventure game inventory items; and the puzzle solving consists of figuring out how to make line of sight with the next person for you to take over. This sees you moving though the entire world of this game through a chain of mental possessions while Raz remains tied up in a chair the whole time. This movement system is unique for VR, and manages to work both as a Look & Click adventure game and as a VR game that even those prone to motion sickness should be able to enjoy. I myself am more than happy to play VR games that rely on more standard movement schemes like free locomotion, but it is nice to see a developer stretch their brains to come up with something different and suited specifically to the medium, even if the results feel a bit more limiting.

Looking away from the gameplay, the story here is pretty scant compared to Psychonauts, and pretty much contains just enough to set up the existence of the game. As I'm sure you've read already, it also clocks in at a relatively short time, my Steam game time counter says I played through it in around 2 hours. If you're looking for a wide variety of wacky characters, you'll also find that number to be significantly lower than we've seen in the past. What we have is good, great even, we just don't have that much. Despite this, the presentation is just great: the music is bombastic and comedic; the graphics look like what Psychonauts should look like in 2017, sharper but still true to the original; the writing is witty and sharp; the levels are chaotic and creative.

If you like Psychonauts or even just funny and quirky games, you'll like this. If you like VR or if you're looking to try it out, this would be an excellent game to start with.

I was hopeful this game would serve as an introduction to this franchise I’ve heard so many good things from, and sure enough it did an excellent job of doing just that. The quirky cast and charming humor welcomed even a newcomer like me, and I could quickly pick up who I was and what I was doing no problem. For around 2 hours I went on a fun journey solving puzzles using psychic powers, exploring a mysterious world and solving a mystery, and feeling like I was really in a cartoon detective movie. I was definitely charmed enough to play the core franchise after this, and if you have access to VR, this is a great way to spend the evening. Expand

In all, there feel like somewhat minor gripes for a well-crafted, if somewhat brief, VR experience that delivers great storytelling and characterisation in a fascinating and funny universe. If it had a proper ended instead of just..stopping, it would be truly sublime.

As a point-and-click experience in spirit, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin is much better suited to hardcore adventure gamers than its sometimes demanding platforming predecessor ever was, but it isn’t a standout game in terms of enjoyment or quality. It’s a short side mission that doesn’t wow with its puzzles or offer anything revolutionary in terms of gameplay or narrative. But it accomplishes what it sets out to do, by bringing a sorely-needed new dose of Psychonauts to the faithful, or at least those with a PlayStation 4 and a PSVR headset. It neither particularly delights nor disappoints, but marks its place as a competent placeholder in the expanding Psychonauts series, and a reasonable point of entry for those new to the virtual reality experience.

Double Fine brings us back some very good memories of Raz and all of the other Psychonauts on this new adventure exclusively for the PlayStation VR, which performs a different gameplay from its first entry and lacks charm.
