Bel remake del puzzle-platform per PSX.
Grafica dallo stile inconfondibile, ambientazioni ispirate.
Giocabilità discreta, con controlli un po' rigidi.
    Puzzle interessanti e ben studiati.
    Personaggi simpaticissimi.

Abe’s Odyssey quickly became a cult favourite back in the days of the PlayStation one, and this ground up remake retains the charm that made it such a favourite whilst bringing the graphics bang up to date. Unfortunately, it also retains the imprecise controls and trial and error gameplay that was frustrating enough even back in the 90’s, and as such it’s hard to recommend this to anyone but fans of the original.

The controls need SERIOUS work as it sub-par in comparison to the original game (and most games of the time) - the new game is also more frustrating than enjoyable due to the glitchy mechanics sloppy programming, and plain lazy execution.

This could have been an opportunity to release another great game, but there are way too many negatives to leave a good impression. Unfortunately "New & Tasty" aims big, but falls horribly short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oddworld New n Tasty is fair remake of a PS1 classic. The graphics are crisp, but the control scheme is let down. This issue raises to its peak during the final level where you are faces with a challenge where you require pin point accurate movements, and find inconsistencies are all over the place. The game eventually shows that the control input is probably the biggest challenge of the game, and not the puzzles so much. Expand

I never played the original but enjoyed this game. Good graphics and interesting story and cutscenes. However felt the jumping and physics of the game were very challenging making it frustrating. Also it was only until halfway through the game that I realised how to actually save the creatures, and by then half had been lost.

The world is interesting. Theres not much of a story at all, just him traveling a few places, but theres only a few cutscenes. The game has decent length. The problem is the game is set to a bunch of self contained short little levels that copy 3 different level templates from each area and utilizes the same 3-4 mechanics of pulling levels, possessing, and throwing things. This makes the game feel broken up and repetitive. The two hugest problems really bring the score down. First is the lack of tutorial or game explaining anything. The game mentioned nothing about gamespeak or copying NPCs movements or how to do so, which took about 5 min to figure out looking online. Then there are parts where you can take control of bad guys, which is understood. But they never mention you can command these little dogs, and that you can order them to attack, something required to beat a part. For the game to have all these different and weird components it needs to explain them and not just expect someone to know something new for no reason.

The worst part of all is the terrible finicky controls. For 2/3 of the jumping and platforming, you need to be in this invisible little trigger boxes to have the desired outcome. If you run and jump your guy just does this tiny this awkward jump forward, unless you are at the perfect spot under a ledge he'll jump up real high to grab it. Same with mines, if you are too close you'll jump way over to other mines, but if you in perfect spot he'll short skip. When jumping with rideable mount over ledges its the same thing. I died so many times because you have to get right under ledges in perfect spot, or by mines, and its all trial and error. A platforming game should not have such weird and horrible controls. Even ordering people around is annoying. You have to stand right on top of them when grabbing multiple people or it will talk to the guy you already got. The ending is dumb and makes no sense, unless you find all these secret levels and let guys loose, and they don't tell you how many you need to get good ending. In the end the lack of direction and some of the, if not the, worst platforming mechanics and controls i have ever seen bring this down.

Normally, you would experience a story by what it says in words supported by other stuff (music etc.). However, this game tells a story with very few words feeding from a simple base but thanks to the way the characters behave, the gestures, the venues, the ‘music’ etc. the story is very enjoyable in emotional terms. Said that, the gameplay is kind of puzzle platforming, meaning you basically go around jumping and stuff but you have to use your brains a bit if you don’t want to die. I heard a lot of people got frustrated because they found the original too hard. For those, there is an ‘easy’ mode now so, no excuse for anybody to go and give this awesome and very different game a try. Expand

Back in the day I found them to be as moving and beautiful (not to mention really smart, entertaining, and challenging) as any game I'd ever played up to that point. For the most part, my views haven't really changed, except for the part about me thinking the original first two are beautiful. They still are, but they have to be remembered in the context of what all video games looked like 15 to 20 years ago. With this in mind, one can probably imagine how excited I was to find out they were recreating at least the first one with up-to-date graphics. I will say that this is still a fantastic game, and I really appreciate that they've even added to it a little bit. I also hope they keep remaking these. For all the negatives I'm about to throw down, I'd still buy an updated Abe's Exoddus.

When I first started playing New N' Tasty, almost immediately I noticed something was different. For all that they added, they seemed to take quite a bit away from it as well, which changes the soul of the game in a subtle and not-always-appreciated way. Maybe it's the fact that they've gone somewhat away from its 2D sideview to give it slightly more visual depth and perspective (which I don't particularly care for). Maybe it's that the controller layout is somewhat different for this iteration (which I also don't really like). But one thing that REALLY stands out right away is that while the graphics are many, many times better than the original, the sound effects are substantially lacking compared to 17 years ago(!?!). The deep, almost didgeridoo-like sound underneath Abe's chanting is quite a bit less noticeable. The machine guns carried by the sligs sound like little cap guns now, where as in the original they had some beef to their pops (also, I don't think you can shoot across open chasms from a distant catwalk to one in the foreground anymore, which is a huge bummer because I always enjoyed picking off sligs up close). Basically, I was hoping this would be just a visually updated version of the original, but sadly, it is not (at least not enough to my liking).

The strength of my grade for this game is based on my love of the original. I can't say this New N' Tasty really succeeded in giving me the warm fuzzies. It came close though.

New ‘N’ Tasty is exactly what it claims to be: a new experience still instantly familiar to anyone that played the original, and vital playing for those that didn’t. Oddworld was a defining presence on the Playstation, and New ‘N’ Tasty will remain a defining experience on the new generation of consoles, too. It’s a pleasure to see a remaster done so well.
