This version of the game produced by J.A.W maintains what makes the original a classic while adding several improvements that don't comprimise the creative vision that the original had. For example, the game has added versatility in its difficulty, allowing people who felt frustrated with the original enjoy the game. Controlling Abe feels diferent, it feels better, the controls seem to respond better, but there was no loss of the feeling that I controling a real person, or should I say, a real creature. Somehow they managed to find that perfect balance betwen responsive controls and the feel that i am controlling a real penson. This has always been one of the things I liked most about the original games, the fact that you were controlling a real person, this combined with the extremely peculiar world that Lorne Lanning created passed that first positive first impression that the game provide, thats what called the player's attention. However, the appeal of the game went beyond that, it went far deeper, the game have excellent game mechanics and there's a sensational narrative, with several implied messages that can be reflected by the player, allowing him to take his own conclusions. More important than that is the fact that the gameplay is in total confluence with the story, it is totally different from modern games that compromise the story just because shoot 'em in the head is what sells,it isn't that game that developers create a cgi scene there they want you to care about the character, and when he gives you control of the character he send hordes of enemies for you to shoot , I don't see any person who can sympathize with a murderer. Any violence in oddworld, the creators can get away with it through irony. The gameplay isnt against the narrative, this is one of that special games that the gameplay doesnt work against the narrative, it works in favor of the narrative, making a emotional atachment with the player and the character of the game that few other mediums can achieve, its one of that special games that is very atmosferic. All the improvements help to create a more compealing atmosfere, the game looks more real than ever, the jump to 3D and no flipscreen help the game create a more cinematic feel ( sometimes the camera angles change ) . More important than ever is , despite being an all new game, this remake keeps what made the original apealing, it has its creative vision, it is a remake that remaster the classic to the 21st century. One of the things i absolute love about this game is the pace of it, it provides a nice challenge but at the same time it isnt that much that game that you are in constant battle and must have very fast reflexes, its a game that you can take your time, you have to be patient to be a good player, and the best thing is that because of the great controls i aways feel that i died because of me and not because of the game. The problem is the game is set to a bunch of self contained short little levels that copy 3 different level templates from each area and utilizes the same 3-4 mechanics of pulling levels, possessing, and throwing things. This makes the game feel broken up and repetitive. The two hugest problems really bring the score down. First is the lack of tutorial or game explaining anything. The game mentioned nothing about gamespeak or copying NPCs movements or how to do so, which took about 5 min to figure out looking online. Then there are parts where you can take control of bad guys, which is understood. But they never mention you can command these little dogs, and that you can order them to attack, something required to beat a part. For the game to have all these different and weird components it needs to explain them and not just expect someone to know something new for no reason.

The worst part of all is the terrible finicky controls. For 2/3 of the jumping and platforming, you need to be in this invisible little trigger boxes to have the desired outcome. If you run and jump your guy just does this tiny this awkward jump forward, unless you are at the perfect spot under a ledge he'll jump up real high to grab it. Same with mines, if you are too close you'll jump way over to other mines, but if you in perfect spot he'll short skip. When jumping with rideable mount over ledges its the same thing. I died so many times because you have to get right under ledges in perfect spot, or by mines, and its all trial and error. A platforming game should not have such weird and horrible controls. Even ordering people around is annoying. You have to stand right on top of them when grabbing multiple people or it will talk to the guy you already got. The ending is dumb and makes no sense, unless you find all these secret levels and let guys loose, and they don't tell you how many you need to get good ending. In the end the lack of direction and some of the, if not the, worst platforming mechanics and controls i have ever seen bring this down.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oddworld New n Tasty is fair remake of a PS1 classic. The graphics are crisp, but the control scheme is let down. This issue raises to its peak during the final level where you are faces with a challenge where you require pin point accurate movements, and find inconsistencies are all over the place. The game eventually shows that the control input is probably the biggest challenge of the game, and not the puzzles so much. Expand

The controls need SERIOUS work as it sub-par in comparison to the original game (and most games of the time) - the new game is also more frustrating than enjoyable due to the glitchy mechanics sloppy programming, and plain lazy execution.

This could have been an opportunity to release another great game, but there are way too many negatives to leave a good impression. Unfortunately "New & Tasty" aims big, but falls horribly short.

The controls, the level design, the game play mechanics. The game is like a completely new game. Which is a good thing. So if I were to mention what I loved about it, I would say that it has excellent controls, great level design, and is true to the original, yet offers something both fans, and new comers would enjoy. However, it does come with its own flaws. The Easy and Medium modes are WAY too easy (They even added a health bar). Some NPCs don't respond on time or get easily distracted (Happened to me once or twice, so it isn't that big of a deal). But the biggest complaint I have with it is that the atmosphere is completely gone. The game is now less creepy, and more comedic. The silly lines that Mudokens and Sligs mutter during game play are kinda annoying, and pretty loud. You can turn down the volume of voices, but still. I just love almost everything about this game, and would have given it a 9 or a 10, if it weren't for the atmosphere change. It felt less like an Oddworld, and more like a new game... But is that bad? Well... You decide. I am just providing my opinion. Expand

The cutscenes are better. Everything about it is better. Also, I never really noticed how violent this game is. I'm not one for games with a message, but this one kind of hit home. You are a mudoken, a slave, working in rupture farms. They got rich selling paramite pies and scrab cakes, but now the paramites and the scrabs are going extinct, and their profits are falling, so now they're going to eat you. You have to escape and save your friends, or let them die and see what happens. The graphics are wonderfully beautiful. Also, I tried getting the original 2 games on my Vita, but with L2 and R2 being mapped to either the nonfunctional rear touch pad or the front screen, the games are basically unplayable, for once I can play these games properly. And I get to play the best version. It's going to take a while to work my way through it because it's a pretty substantial game, but it appears that they have obsessively recreated the original and only made things prettier and better. It does all you can expect from an HD remake. It doesn't ruin the game (Silent Hill 2 HD Fog), it's the exact same game for better or worse. Maybe they could have innovated a bit, but that would just be messing with the source material and people would be angry. I can say with some certainty that this is a good game. I mean I already played it, so it's good, because I remember. How much better this is, is kind of up in the air. I like the graphics and PLEASE RELEASE THE VITA VERSION.... sorry.... sorry.... *tick* That's an unconscious reflex, it cannot be prevented. Well, I appear to have gone insane. It's a decent game, worth checking out, especially if you didn't play the original but *especially* if you've played the original. And look um, I've really been looking forward to this game, I like it, it's great. And if they reach some very modest sales targets, they're going to remake Abe's Exodus. Abe's Exodus was the better game. I want to see that happen. =( {Hey everybody go buy Rogue Legacy} Expand

    - the game is better with quick save
    - alf's escape is a good bonus
    - easy mode as well as the original 1 hit death.

    Cons-
    - controls are not as tight as original
    - the game somehow doesn't feel as dark as original in tone, it doesn't quite have that weird intriguing vibe.
    - voices are pretty good, but a lot of sounds are not as loud as original,
and mix in with the in game music and ambiance, and that's after i turned the sound fx to full,
I used to get a sort of jump scare in the original when a scrab would kill me in the original.
    - minor glitches and minor broken sound, i had a scrab glitch still once and sometimes my shrykull was completely silent.
-quick save is awesome but it makes the game fairly easy even on hard but this is just a tiny nit pick.

    overall: 8.0/10

The strange thing is everyone was so angry at the MGS ground zeroes for being a two hour game at the cost of thirty dollars, this takes 2 hours minimium to finish don't believe me look at the leader boards, the game atm in Aus is thirty dollars.
Just take into account I was a massive fan of almost the entire series. Don't get me wrong if you in the hankering for some muddokon pops this is the treat for you, because there will only be scrab cakes after that.
    I don't get it.

I never played the original but enjoyed this game. Good graphics and interesting story and cutscenes. However felt the jumping and physics of the game were very challenging making it frustrating. Also it was only until halfway through the game that I realised how to actually save the creatures, and by then half had been lost.

For the most part, my views haven't really changed, except for the part about me thinking the original first two are beautiful. They still are, but they have to be remembered in the context of what all video games looked like 15 to 20 years ago. With this in mind, one can probably imagine how excited I was to find out they were recreating at least the first one with up-to-date graphics. I will say that this is still a fantastic game, and I really appreciate that they've even added to it a little bit. I also hope they keep remaking these. For all the negatives I'm about to throw down, I'd still buy an updated Abe's Exoddus.

When I first started playing New N' Tasty, almost immediately I noticed something was different. For all that they added, they seemed to take quite a bit away from it as well, which changes the soul of the game in a subtle and not-always-appreciated way. Maybe it's the fact that they've gone somewhat away from its 2D sideview to give it slightly more visual depth and perspective (which I don't particularly care for). Maybe it's that the controller layout is somewhat different for this iteration (which I also don't really like). But one thing that REALLY stands out right away is that while the graphics are many, many times better than the original, the sound effects are substantially lacking compared to 17 years ago(!?!). The deep, almost didgeridoo-like sound underneath Abe's chanting is quite a bit less noticeable. The machine guns carried by the sligs sound like little cap guns now, where as in the original they had some beef to their pops (also, I don't think you can shoot across open chasms from a distant catwalk to one in the foreground anymore, which is a huge bummer because I always enjoyed picking off sligs up close). Basically, I was hoping this would be just a visually updated version of the original, but sadly, it is not (at least not enough to my liking).

The strength of my grade for this game is based on my love of the original. I can't say this New N' Tasty really succeeded in giving me the warm fuzzies. It came close though.

Unfortunately, it also retains the imprecise controls and trial and error gameplay that was frustrating enough even back in the 90’s, and as such it’s hard to recommend this to anyone but fans of the original.

If you're a hardcore Abe fan and won't take anything less than the original difficulty, then there is a Hard mode, which brings you closer to the original experience.

Controls have been switched around quite a bit from the original (mostly for the better) but overall control is less polished than the original. The biggest downside is the general unresponsiveness of the jump this time around - standing horizontal jumps are annoyingly sloppy having to press jump and then tilting right just after because tilting the left stick controls walk and run now based on the angle. Furthermore, there are several times when I have been shot by an enemy when I have been on a moving platform way out of the line of fire, and died. Also a couple of animations and sounds haven't made the jump the way to the new version! Most of these things can be fixed with updates, but still a really good game, just like it was in '97 Expand

I'm happy to say J.a.w have succeeded in modernising the original without sacrificing what was great about it, for the most part. Transitioning from the ps1 to ps4 controls takes a bit of getting used to at first but it quickly becomes easy and a joy to play. The new additions brought to the game are for the better with choices of difficulty, the quick save function, and of course the wonderful new graphics that really bring oddworld to life. My only real complaint is how the tone of the game has changed, where the original had a dark and unsettling atmosphere part of that has been lost in this remake. The biggest example of this is in the cutscenes that add silly cartoonish moments like Abe "comedically" falling over after receiving the shrykull power, or when entering the paramonian temple and seeing Sligs caught up in webs just comes off as goofy rather than intimidating, it's as if the cutscenes adapted the style of munch's oddysee which isn't a positive thing. Other than that the game is good where it counts, the original endearing oddysee of Abe is still here along with almost perfect game play for the genre, old fans and newcomers should give Abe a go and ensure the future delivers brand new games set within the world of odd. Normally, you would experience a story by what it says in words supported by other stuff (music etc.). However, this game tells a story with very few words feeding from a simple base but thanks to the way the characters behave, the gestures, the venues, the ‘music’ etc. the story is very enjoyable in emotional terms. Said that, the gameplay is kind of puzzle platforming, meaning you basically go around jumping and stuff but you have to use your brains a bit if you don’t want to die. I heard a lot of people got frustrated because they found the original too hard. For those, there is an ‘easy’ mode now so, no excuse for anybody to go and give this awesome and very different game a try. Expand

New ‘N’ Tasty is exactly what it claims to be: a new experience still instantly familiar to anyone that played the original, and vital playing for those that didn’t. Oddworld was a defining presence on the Playstation, and New ‘N’ Tasty will remain a defining experience on the new generation of consoles, too. It’s a pleasure to see a remaster done so well.
