This game is epic! Sure there were a few glitches that were for frustrating but i got over it. The graphics and gameplay were flawless! The only things i didn't like was the fact that they don't show you where to go and the magic was very mediocre but besides that its perfect. Realistically i would give it 9 but because of the scores on metacritic I'm giving it a 10!

Great game, very similar to Dark Souls. I like the levels very much. Also it's not tht frustrating like Dark Souls. I really recommend it to everyone before Bloodborne will come out in February.

Amazing game! Don't know why such low reviews. Hangs with ds. Both have pros and cons. Best next Gen game so far in my opinion. Great work. Looking forward to part 2! A must have for fans of the genre. Simply awesome!

amazing beautiful game with fantastic gameplay!! I play as much as 5 hours and I can not break away. As the good old days. I hope that the game is long and we get some DLC in the near future because as it goes on like this for 2-3 days it did not end up getting up from the console

From what I've played, it looks like an amazing achievement from the Polish guys. And for those comparing it to dark souls and disliking the game for that reason alone, should really play it before criticizing it.

I had just got this because I was a fan of The Witcher 2 (executive producer Tomasz Gop worked on) and Dark Souls. I have only gotten to the second boss so far and I like how it plays so far. Don't compare it to Dark Souls like I almost did or you will miss a really great Game.

I've taken 3 days of vacation starting from today just to play this game and I must admit that till now it was worth every hour! Very satisfying combat system - you really feel heaviness of your weapon. There's nothing better that wielding a giant hummer and rushing towards 10x bigger Lord. Flawless!

I was shocked by the "feel" of this game. As a student of the From Software/Miyazaki school of thought, the mechanics are already familiar. This is where the similarities to the "other" game end.

The world has it's own particular feel which is hard to explain. It is very subjective. It is like looking into a View-Master or perhaps Iranian miniatures in a way. As a child I was fascinated

Level design is very much that of Dark Souls One but almost taken to another level because you are mainly in 2 different area's the whole time. Each of these to areas feel really connected, especially the Castle, filled with secret areas that can be missed.

THIS GAME DOES NOT HAVE MULTIPLAYER OR CREATE A CHARACTER! I thought everyone should know that because some people hold that stuff very dear. This game is a pretty fair challenge, hit boxes are on point (An improvement moving from DS1 & DS2). I also have to say there is a good selection of Armor & Weapons (A very Diverse group of weapon types). I also have to say the story is actually pretty cool, their is some cool lore that exists in this game as well.

DS fans can enjoy the flavor text in all of the items in this game, the narrative that is given from the world & it's NPCs, and there are also Lore Scrolls that contain Audio Lore Files. Also this game's combat system is very fleshed out, with the soul's Heavy, Light, Jumping, Back Stab & Parry Attacks. But this game also features a combo system for weapons, instead of smashing buttons you can time them to save stamina. When this is done in succession while using dual-wield weapons, you attacks preform unique attack animations that cause more damage. One handed heavy attacks on heavier weapons can be over charged by holding down the button, these cause more damage and have better chances of breaking enemy poise at the cost of stamina.

I had a blast with this game my first play-through clocked me in at 28 hours and 15 minutes. There are plenty of locked doors I know I missed, treasure chest and other things I probably overlooked. I missed a good number of the Proving Ground (Challenge Areas the game had to offer) & apparently some areas are only available in NG+ & NG++? So I have still a bit to do as well as playing through it again as a Rogue & a Warrior.

Enemies in this game are very cool, they're humanoid but they actually have a specific type of tactic they use. For an example Orcs like to be very evasive & run circles around you, later in the game this tactic is very effective when fighting three orcs & another enemy. The Orcs will trap you in an ever shifting circle, ready to poke at you or go for a backstab if the time is right for them. All that occurs while the other enemy in question will do as they please.

The music in this game is really cool to, THERE IS ONE BUG IN PARTICULAR THAT NEEDS TO BE PATCHED ASAP!! If you die to a boss, the game's file directory or something can't root back to the bosses correct track, so instead you may have no music play or the FIRST BOSS TRACK will play instead. This bug can detract from the fight horribly making it very un-intense!

*Temporary fix! you can exit to the main menu and eject the disk, BTW this the cure to any bug I think for the time being for this game anyway.*

But overall I had a lot of fun playing this game. If you are struggling you should utilize your magic a bit, it's always a get out of jail free card if you use it properly. This game is a good challenge to, if you enjoy games that can challenge you'll probably enjoy this. Can't wait to see this new IP grow and evolve, hopefully it never pulls a DS2 though?

The gameplay feels much more polished than Dark Souls. The animations and the combat itself plays, feels, and looks so much better. In Dark Souls, the character is moving unnaturally, it is floating weirdly. Here you can really see the impact of your moves, hits, the armor and equipment you are wearing etc.
Difficulty is hard to compare, i like both titles for that, but people keep saying, that this is arcade version of DS, but i have played many hours in DS games and this was very often bigger challenge than DS.
Equipment system is much more meaningful and it is very enjoyable part of the game.
Overall i think that Lords of the Fallen feels and plays better, and it is more polished and better looking than DS. One of the biggest surprises of 2014 for me.

The music is great, the graphics are AAA and the story is decent. Also, there are lots of side passages to explore and secrets and shortcuts to uncover. Exploration is rewarded in this game! This game will inevitably be compared to Dark Souls and some levels it doesn't quite reach the success of the Souls franchise, however, there are more positives than negatives to be taken away from Lords of the Fallen.

From the moment the first cutscene kicks in you can see that a lot of care and attention has went in to both the look and atmosphere of this game. Like Demon/Dark Souls it hits the nail on the head. For such a small team of devs this is quite an achievement.

The story lacks a sense of gravity and at times it is difficult to really care about what is happening in the surrounding areas or the mission that Harkyn has been broken out to complete. This feeling is kept right up till the end and there is no real connection to make you feel anything during the final moments of the game. I feel that the character model is truly badass and the story of the facial tattoos being a mark of their incarceration is a nice touch, it's just a pity that more isn't developed on this and regarding Harkyn, especially when some of the audio stories that are picked up have excellent voice acting and interesting slices of the life before the rhogar.

The combat is very familiar but a lot more forgiving than other games of the genre. Bosses are well formed and artistically fantastic, however, they were quite a bit easier than you would expect, so much so that I found myself using the same tactics against almost every boss. Only a few bosses did I ever feel like I needed to take a step back, reassess and adapt. I also found myself using the same weapon for almost the entire game but this may be personal preference.

It should be mentioned that managing to create a world that balances the fine line of frustration and reward is a truly difficult thing. For this reason Deck 13 Interactive and CI Games should be commended for this. There always seemed like a way to move forward and loot to collect from either defeated enemies or chest that are placed around the map but as mentioned above, I found that although there were benefits in upgrading your armor those same benefits weren't really as outstanding when it came to weapons. This may have been due to my playstyle and the fact that i wanted to keep myself free to move faster. I also eventually ditched my shield in favour of dodging and although the rune system was integrated so heavily I never really found it necessary but more of an added extra.

Final Say - In it's entirety, Lords of the Fallen succeeds in what it set out to do and although it may feel like a very slightly watered downed version of Dark Souls it should definitely be recognised for what it does well as opposed to how it is different. The story lacks but the combat and exploration aspects of the game keep you playing till the next boss and the stories of the residents who lived before keep you wishing to know that bit more. I can't help but feel that if this game had a bigger budget and a better story next time, we may have to lock Dark Souls and Lords of the Fallen in a room and let them "riposte" it out.

    Excellent game - 9

Also it is not dark would nor is it trying to be while it might have some similarities it's more of a fun action type RPG with some what of a challenging combat system to learn where as dark souls is just a challenging game all around period but honestly this is something I actually like about Lords of the fallen and think it got right and is better for for it and honestly felt like the design and combat behind this game at the end of the day is more fun then dark souls is and I know I will get flak for saying that but hey it's my opinion and just being nothing but difficult at the end of the day can only go so far and doesn't mean it's gonna be fun to every one while with lords of fallen I feel like anyone can enjoy and play this game along with its combat system without saying it is too difficult instead they will find it challenging enough yet more fun in my opinion. lords of the fallen is a game that takes a little of something from different games to create one fun experience which I feel worked but can surely be even better and improved upon and if they take all of what the game does right and just improve upon it while also making game bigger and longer along with more of a story and more story telling and lastly most make sure the finished product is more polished at launch then the original was then we have a great sequel to look forward too something I hope happens and can't wait for.

So remember it's not dark souls but it wasn't trying to be nor is this a bad thing at the end of the day as you find out the game is more fun and better for it in my opinion due to it having a more fun combat system and gameplay and if you want more of a challenge it's simple turn up the difficulty! I don't see how being forced to play on nothing but difficult mode makes a game better, it doesn't the gameplay/combat system is what's most important first and has to be fun and playable in my opinion. The difficulty is something you can set and change in any game while gameplay isn't so in my opinion difficulty does not make a game great or unique for that matter, to me it's just an option that every game has to choose from for those who feel they need more of a challenge.

So do yourself a favor if your a fan of action RPGS and fun games at very least watch some gameplay videos or give this game a try especially now with it being $39.99 it is a good and fun game and surely worth that price at very least. Man I hope they develop some DLC for this something publishers need to push and developers need to start developing more of for their games since it's more content for us and more money for them so it's a win win at end of the day for both sides.

In regards to LoTF, my initial impression wasn't the best, i was taken away by the graphics, and I enjoyed the first twenty minutes but began to tire of the grinding, but after playing some more, i became impressed with the range of weapons, and the magic abilities. The enemies in this game are well made, with plenty of different kinds to battle. The bosses are strong, the story line isn't without faults but i'm happy to be playing through a second time!

Graphics is much better than DS2. The atmosphere is grim but not so depressing as in DS2. The story is simple but it actually makes sense (unlike DS).

Unfortunately the game is very unstable on my rig. Basically it crashes often on some bosses and I could not complete the game. It's really a shame. I would have given 10 if not for this issue.

Playing this in 2021 and I can't understand the low scores - it must have had a lot of technical issues at launch. It's a really great game and often on sale for very cheap. I played it after playing Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 and Bloodborne - and it's still a lot of a fun - if not quite as polished as a From Soft game. It clocks in around 15 hrs too - so kind of a Souls LITE or Light Souls if you will.

I played this game in a sequence after Bloodborne and Dark Souls Trilogy, and do not understand why this game has such poor reviews.
The graphics are okay-ish, the story is okay-ish, but the gameplay, the combat, the exploration, all borrow heavily from FromSoft and is adequately executed. Without FromSoft, this is the next best thing.

Lords of the Fallen is, by all accounts, a more approachable Dark Souls. There's less cheap tricks, frustrating platforming and unnecessary deaths. The Boss Fights do not generate the same feeling of despair and impossible odds as in other games of the genre, but at least they can be done without resorting to cheap tricks or online guides.

I think this game is perfect for all newcomers to the genre or Souls veterans unable to stand still until Bloodborne.

Yes it's full of bugs, but none of them are generally game breaking. There are instances where the screenshot feature will disable in-game dialogue sounds, some bosses fail to register damage from incoming blows, chests that cannot be opened due to no prompts. The list goes on. Still considering all this I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am now in NG+. I especially like the dark souls-esque obscurity on the part of bosses, game lore and side quests. You can complete the game withouth knowing much of the story and without doing any side quests. If you're not interested, you can ignore such elements. If you thirst for more, you can read and listen to prerecorded "tapes".

The game does have some framerate hiccups, but mostly runs at a solid 30fps. So at no point did I find myself at a disadvantage due to technical limitations. If you're looking for a game more difficult than the Souls series, then Lords of the Fallen is not for you. It's a good Souls-fix until Bloodborne but also a good action RPG on its own merits. 8/10 from me.

I can find very little to not like about this game. While its scope is obviously no where as broad as a Final Fantasy type of RPG and the focus is almost entirely on combat and stats (no: villages, open worlds to explore, deep characters, or story choices to make), the game is richly detailed in its focus. The graphics and gothic fantasy artwork are constantly beautiful. The atmosphere is full. The combat is thrilling with a real sense of pressure and strategy. This is not a button masher. It's ridiculous to call it that. I'm really enjoying the game. It's a dark and fun campaign. Like Shadows of Mordor, I'll likely get a good 15 hours or so of campaign and sides, without much replayability though. The thing I like the most about this game is the great variety of combat. Lots of techniques and loot to try out and learn from. The variety of enemy behavior however is not so great. Also there can be some glitches and bugs, but the few I experienced were pretty minimal. There could be more story, enemies, and locations. There could be more to it. But it is fun and it has a great atmosphere. There are many different ways to be victorious in it and many different styles of play that can be easily switched up. The game is worth it. 7.5 (I'll round it up to offset the ridiculus 0s. Expand

I liked the music, it creates atmosphere very well.
There are not much enemies types but every of them requiers different approach. Boss fights are not that hard as advertised, they lack diversity, 8/10 are just big guys with swords.
World is relatively small, there is no map so you need to memorize everything. There is a lot of hidden content like breakable walls, chests, unseen passages that leads to various places - exploration profits in nice loot. Checkpoint system is well crafted, it is a bit of gamble if you decide to not spend your experience but then your exp multiplier grows with each killed enemy. I found that very rewarding after restraining to use any chekpoint for more than an hour.

    What I did not like?
The plot. It is not a well written game, collecting the audio logs across the game may give you an insight to lore but the story itself is not told in a proper way. Apart from killing Lords until the last hours of the game I had no idea what is the purpose of all of this.
The characters. If it wasn't for Tomasz Gop itself I would have no idea who Harkyn is, what his tattoos mean, why was he cast into prison, nothing. Besides the main character there are few other which are not memorable at all.
Bugs. The game, even after the first patch, is more than unfinished. There are some major problems with audio that simply can disapear in the middle of conversation. I experienced occassional crashes. Loading of textures and objects was noticable but not that irritating.
Facial animations are abysmal. It is really a shame that devs put almost none work to make the conversations even a little bit convincing.

All in all I liked this game. If you are a kind of person that disliked Dark Souls for its difficulty or dumb savepoint s system you will like Lords of the Fallen.
It took me about 19 hours to complete the game, most of that time I had my fun. So will you.

If that's not your forte or you cannot put aside your bias leave this game alone. The weapons move differently, the armor has a nice trade off with mobility, the interface is slick. Some say it's too slow even without armor; please try a running dive roll and tell me how well it turns out for you. Most technical issues I'm sure the developer will look after, Gop has been very transparent about his interest in making this game a success.

pros and cons from the perspective of dks fan

    pros:
    -graphics
-weapon and armor feeling, especially heavy
-fully copied dks mechanics (no need to change its perfection)
    -challenge portals
-boss phases (with quite different movesets and openings)
-loads of stuff hidden around, including the 'leave the main area and explore sideways' possibilities
-subtle improvements (keeping exp instead of leveling/saving gives you a bonus multiplier, lost exp gives you a temporarly buff in cost of loosing that exp)

    cons:
-glitches and unstable fps - totally unacceptable on the ps4 (!!!!!), it cost the game at least 1 point in 1-10 scale, cause its uber frustrating
-RNG - fix it guys, see how dks does that, fighting a particular enemy in LOTF can be super easy or almost impossible, depending on RNG, i fought the second boss (guardian ?) couple of times and he was just spamming his AOE with no break, making it impossible to even look for an opening, and the last time ive fought him 80% of his attacks were leaving openings (ridiculous difference, huh ?), its not a fair game like dks, you need to be helluva lucky during a speed run (and the game was meant to be a speedrun base)
-cheesy way of hardening enemies - putting an enemy with a huge shield with little openings (which forces you to change your weapon, cause you wont hit in that half a second with a heavy one) is just boring and slowing the game, its not how its supposed to challenge you
-no stun lock (?), srsly guys if i hit even a huge guy with a combo of huge hammer heavy attacks it should at least break his attack, and most of the time i hit the big guy hard and half a sec later he hits me back like it was nothing - totally broken mechanics, again - see how dks did that
-skirmisher's rng - they walk around me in a circles, neither attacking nor defending - somebody screw these guys hard, especially that when they start attacking they are a really well done enemy
-dialogs and npc - really bad, if you put a dialog options at least let them continue so they would feel as an actual conversation leading somewhere, not just click everything and maybe it will work out, also main character gesticulate too much, its a bad ass convict, not a gold chained cheap rapper ;)

    neutral:
-let people choose the difficulty level - i guess most of the dks fans would start this game on ng+ if it was possible, as the ng is much easier then dks
-a multiplayer, like a normal match-making arena pvp would be nice and kept the game alive for a longer period of time
-lack of group fights, i guess CI Games wanted to make every fight more intimate, 1on1 style, but raging through like 5-15 weak enemies would also give some fun, it rips the game of crowd-control which is very important in dks in comparison

as you could see most of the cons could have been fixed with a good update patch, no idea why it havent been done yet

my overall opinion would is 6,5/10 and 7,5/10 (if glitches and frame drops fixed), leaving 7/10 in between

buy this game, support the devs, encourage them to make a real dks competition :)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, the game is good, it's Souls-like, but it's not perfect (yet, I hope).
So, firstly, PS4-version has some annoying framedrops at some open areas. The game is supposed to be running at 30 FPS, but it feels like it drops to 20 quite often. I hope that can be patched.
Secondly, there's that weird lock-on system. I don't mean the controls, but its unresponsiveness. Sometimes it just won't lock, sometimes the lock will just vanish, turning your fleshy back to your opponents.
Lastly, some quite strange issues with bosses, like they were'nt worked on too thoroughly. For example, the second boss (Commander) has that stunning attack which does no damage, but eats up all your energy. I think it's supposed to be followed by some devastating HP-costly hit, but instead he just stands there and waits till your energy fills up again. I have done only two bosses so far, so I hope there aren't too much things like that later on.
But, technicals problems aside, it's a really good Action-RPG with Souls-like mechanics, which manages to make me, as an experienced DaS1/2 player, feel uncomfortable sometimes. Most enemies are bigger than you and hit quite hard. Local exp-regain system, which allows you to build up experience multiplier if you don't activate local checkpoints, is both rewarding and deceptive as you may die quite far from your last checkpoint. However, there's a catch: the bigger multiplier you had before death, the more time you have before points at your "bloodmark" will start fading away.
It's important to notice that LotF, unlike Souls, is all about your armor, so the better armor you have, the easier it gets. The more raw damage your weapon does, the easier it gets.
Also, I really liked art-style of the game, somewhat like Darksiders mixed with Warhammer, with giant chestplates and gorgeous weapons with some useless edges on them.
So, as for me, it's a solid 7 (which may climb to 9 if those technical issues are patched)

However, I beat LOTF in one afternoon. By mid-game with my character leveled up the game became exceedingly easy. There is only one environment type, little variety between build types, and hardly any enemy variety. Accordingly, I am already ready to move on from LOTF to a new game. I would like to see a DLC in a completely different environment with much more enemy variety. P.S. I am still playing the Dark Souls games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First: make sure you've installed the patch. It takes care of most of the issues noted in these reviews.

Second: I recommend a paladin build to start. It makes the first boss that much easier.

Third: completely explore the introduction area. There's a lot more there than you think (make sure to go back and loot the chest in the portal). There's also a hidden cellar area with some loot.

Fourth: level up your agility and take a staff/light armor build if you are used to speed. Made a huge difference for me. And don't neglect your magic. Those gauntlet projectiles and daze are fantastic.

The game has some issues, most notably weird camera tracking on some boss fights, but I've noticed many people trying to run around from the get-go with heavy weapons builds getting beat down. That probably explains some hate. The game is viable without a shield equipped at all. Just beat infiltrator without much difficulty. That may change in the latter half but making the switch from str build to agi was a good choice. My only real gripe is that every mob seems to have excessive special moves. That and mob recovery is stupid fast--you literally cannot get behind or flank some mobs before they recover from a swing and face you.

Other than that the game plays great and somewhat similar to dks. Graphics are pretty. Enjoy the cutscenes. Story is interesting.

Lords of the Fallen is the manifestation of said flattery and imitation, though it has one trait that distinguishes it from FromSoftwares' modern classic - it's not as difficult as the game that inspired it. This, however, is a double edged sword that works for and against LOTF, sometimes equally and at other times more so against it.

Starting with LOTF's narrative, you take the role of Harkyn, a criminal with an amalgam of sins tattooed across his face. Harkyn has been freed from prison to fight the Rhogar - demonic warriors from another realm who are attacking a monastery and threaten to invade the rest of the world (or something - that bit is a little vague and not really properly explained). Character-wise, Harkyn isn't very interesting or charismatic, and the rest of the cast fare no better. The story isn't only forgettable, but also strangely absent, as there are no strong defining moments at any point throughout the roughly 12 to 15 hour playthrough - you simply go through corridor after corridor looking for the next boss to defeat to advance the plot.

Combat and overall movement ranges between acceptable and sluggish, feeling unrefined when compared to Dark Souls. As much as I relished the easier difficulty, I noticed some issues with LOTF - early on the difficulty scaling of some enemies felt unbalanced. The Commander boss fight in particular felt badly designed. On the subject of boss fights, LOTF's boss fights range from underwhelming to just simply unfair at times because of certain unique attacks they possess, but also because of Harkyn's speed and reliance on melee combat. Wearing a full set of heavy armour makes Harkyn's dodge rolls insultingly glacial, a thing which frustrated me greatly.

Some design elements make great additions to the Souls formula. For one thing, you can bank accumulated experience points to generate Skill Points or Magic Points and resting at a 'bonfire' crystal DOESN'T respawn defeated enemies - only when Harkyn is defeated do enemies respawn. In terms of art style and aesthetic, LOTF feels like a combination of Dark Souls, Dragon Age, Darksiders and Diablo.

Lords of the Fallen should have been an obvious win-win - a Dark Souls game for beginners. The result is a game that tries new things to be more accessible and forgiving, but at the same time feels lesser because of it. Ultimately, Lords of the Fallen can't escape the 'Dark' (Souls) shadow of its inspirations.

First of all I must say that I love the character. The game itself is not bad. It is a bit above average. The difficulty often bases on luck. I rated this game with fair seven points because the replay value is too low. Lords of the fallen is quite a good game but funny to play.

OK game, not great, just OK. If you haven't played any of the 'Souls games, play them. If you have beat all the 'Souls games, this will just feel like a downgrade.

Get it for free while you can, but for the love of god, don't spend any amount of money on it.

Next up, I like its heavier style of dark souls gameplay, Harkyn moves like a giant when in heavy or medium weight and the hits of steels and hammers when you hit your enemies are satisfying and its sound is very great and painful. Lastly, the only thing that this game had that dark souls never had is its experience system, the more you kill, the bigger your XP mutiplier will become and resting in a chekpoint would reset that multiplier. it gives me the feeling that i want to kill more without using my stored XP for more experiences and also another challenge that is worth to take on.

As to the cons, Game is so short. yep, you could finish it in a day or in a few hours. Next up, the characters NPCs are not memorable, hell you could even forget them seconds after you talk to them, even the protagonist, whom the developers wanted to be like a kratos-like figure is so boring and unremarkable. They should improve on that part. Lastly, the thing that dark souls have that this game doesnt: The Bosses, all the boss of this games are easy to beat. SO EASY, i only died in one boss. AND THATS THE DLC BOSS WHICH IS A CHEAP ASS MF (F*ck you KEEPER)...thats that. Thanks

However, the story was quite good, there's no need to grind and the world is fun to explore. It was a pleasant surprise. Certainly not as good as souls but better than Nioh in my opinion (mainly as it's much less repetitive). If you can get a cheap copy (say 10 dollars) and you're a fan of the genre then go for it.

I had a real tough time deciding what score to give this game. There are a lot of things running around in my head saying this game is awesome and just as many saying its a sloppy mess. What I love about this game is it is crafted with inspiration. What I despise is that it is made by a smaller development team and it definately shows. In the end I am torn. Do I play this or not. I decided to keep my purchase but I have little inspiration to play. I like hardcore games and I'm willing to put in the effort. I knew going in this was not Dark Souls and so appreciate the game as its own. However what I discovered playing is that if you are going to play a hardcore game and repeatedly invest in going over the same areas over and over, you better have confidence the game is worth your time and not glitching or encountering software bugs. This is why I have decided not to play this game. I simply do not have confidence that its worth my time. It is crystal clear this game was left with defects and the developers just said its good enough lets just move forward. Sorry, that is not good enough for me. To get my time all the bugs need to be fixed. Until then this is just an awesome demo. I scored the game high enough to say its not bad and low enough for warning. I must say a lot of what is here is fantastic. I love the combat, the creatures, the puzzles, the weapons, the exploration. What I have no tolerance for is screen tearing, terrible lock on and toggling ruining gameplay, cutscenes with dropped audio, my character teleporting into and out of 1st person/3rd person in the middle of combat and the perception with all these flaws that there are probably game breakers in there too. So, my review is a buyer beware. There is a lot of neat stuff in this game and a lot of draw and fantasy but also a lot of breaking of immersion due to low standards getting this game out for launch. I guess it will depend on your personality so I touched upon things to consider and for me this game is love hate already. Love whats there, hate it wasn't made with better quality

    Revised review:

Yes this game is very broken and thats it I'm trading it in. It is extemely alluring but not worth all the high scores it is getting. Obviously this game is being rated by its wow effect and not how broken it is. I have just spent two attempts unravelling quests. I made it to certain areas in the game and figured out some pretty decent puzzles to get there...and saving my multipliers up for big experience points....then the game crashes and this happened twice. I just spent 4 hours for this to happen. In the meantime I discovered the weapons you find in the game are not in the proper order of strengh making finding many of them useless garbage. It an open world game this is ok but in a linear game why is my starting 3 weapons better than what I find later on. I'm sorry this game tried to impress and it may fool a lot of kids who want to write a review here and get a lot of hits on their metacritic profile but I'm giving you an honest mature review of this game. It looks spectacular, has its moments but it overly flawed and not the same quality of its inspiration. I'm not saying avoid, there is some fun to be had, but this game clearly deserves only the 6 I gave it not the scores of 8 or more people are giving this game. They are judging it based on their love of the genre not the actual quality of this game. Its very flawed.

I'm disappointing with the bosses, they are all pretty much the same and can all be beaten the same way... I do like the combat... If you wear heavy armor you will be slower, but you can pretty much take everything out.

Do not try and play this game like Dark Souls.. Dark Souls was more on the level of playing defensivly and trying not to get hit.. In this game, it's more like a hack n slash... You WILL get hit a lot but it's not as much of a big deal as it is in Dark Souls..

To be honest I bought this game thinking that the boss battles were going to be epic, I do love me my boss battles....The bosses were a let down to me, but the game as a whole is pretty decent and fun. I would complain that you can not make your own character, but this was known before the game came out...

All in all it's a decent game, but I do not see it being remembered for very long. Keep in mind I have only been playing the game for about 9 hours and I am not finished yet, but this is enough for me to judge the game.. I could not put down the controller when I first played Demon Souls and Dark Souls , this game I had to put the controller down a few times..

Dark Souls without the charm, precision, or rewarding difficulty. It's a pretty game, but that's about it. The story and gameplay are hollow and lifeless. There's some potential here, so I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel if they can build off what they've learned, but it needs some serious work to compete with the DS series.

Graphically the game is fine not next gen quality more closely resembling the darksiders series with big bulky characters. All of the armor looks like sauron from Lord of the Rings. My biggest problem with the look and feel is the level design, in Souls every new area in the souls series looks distinct and different you remember every turn and bridge you pass by. In Lords by contrast most places feel like you have seen them before and just blend into one another they are all pretty generic.

The controls are identical to Souls series but combat differs wildly combat is not skill based in this game or nearly as tight. You can early on max out a spell and just stand in an enemies face spamming him with attacks. The attacks feel unresponsive and sluggish in this game even with light equipment. Every boss fight plays out pretty much just like the previous and i rarely died during them, you really don't feel that sense of accomplishment that you do in dark souls when you overcome a challenging boss or area.

There are a few bright spots in the game the music is excellent. The fact you can multiply your experience by waiting to save at a check point and bank them is a good idea but i warn you the game can and will crash for no reason so after saving up experience for an hour and then the game crashing can be one of the most frustrating things ever. I feel like the creators of this game have a good game in them but couldn't finish the game do to budget restraints also the game is short compared to Souls games probably a quarter the length of Souls.

Compared with games that released in the same year, for example Dark Souls 2, This game did very good on graphic. However, the other aspects are needed to be improved. Gameplay is a clone from soul series but not as good as original. UI is terrible. Button layout is terrible. Also you are not allow to save game manually. You have to save at checkpoint, or save when you leave area, this feels awkward for a game in 2014. Game mechanic is very slow and clunky but still playable after you play for a while. Difficult is little below Darksouls but I do not mind that. Balance is not good. In late part of the game, after I got good great sword + best rune + best amulet, I could one shot most of enemies in the game, except boss and enemies in last location (required 2 swings). I felt satisfied but at the same time, felt cheap. I like the story of this game even though it is not as great as other RPG games that heavily based on story like Witcher 3 or Dragon Age. This game still did better than Dark Souls in term of story. It is much easy to understand what we are doing and why. The map design in this game is very confused, like a maze. I don't like that and Crash happened to me once.

Lastly, NO MULTIPLAYER, give big minus scorees to the game.

In sum, if you never played this kind of game before, I would recommend Dark Souls 3 and Bloodbonre since they are newer, have faster paced and can COOP PVP. You can also play Dark Souls 2 afterward. If you already finished all those three, then you can select Lords of the fallen to kill your time while waiting for NIOH. That is it for this game !

This is a good and challenging game. It is one of those games that will get you killed in a moment if you are not careful and planning, but in time it gets better. On the bad side amount of bugs in the game is HUGE and sometimes kills the fun, unfortunately. Apart rom that visually it's pretty amazing. I would recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.

I spent 74 hours this week playing Dark Souls 2; it was my first playthrough of anything in the Souls series. Having that as a completely fresh experience and then moving into Lords of the Fallen was an interesting transition. I did not find myself to be exceptional at DS2 nor do I find myself particularly skilled at Lords of the Fallen, just to be clear about who you're reading here.

LotF has beautiful and vibrant art that doesn't sacrifice deadliness for attractiveness. The combat is beefy and satisfying; striking an enemy feels legit instead of your weapon just ghosting through and reducing an HP bar by a few pixels. There might be some replayability here but that will depend on some factors. The narrative is interesting and accessible while being relevant and not over-the-top or excessively deep to the point of distracting from the actual game itself (though I often like that sort of thing). The XP and loot system is really a nice advancement in this quasi-genre, where the longer you hold on to your XP instead of spending it the greater your multiplier becomes as you progress thereby providing an optional higher risk higher reward system since dying could possibly amount to losing all of that XP.

On the downside, there are enough bugs, flukes, and design oversights or flaws to really distract me from the potential fun of the game, at least from time to time. One of my biggest complaints (that could be my own fault, but I can't seem to fix it) is the lock-on targeting system. I've gotten used to a lock-on system where I can easily (though perhaps TOO easily) switch from one target to another, and where a new target is automatically selected once the old target dies. LotF seems to have a lot of trouble allowing me to switch from targets that aren't standing directly next to each other, and it disengages the lock-on system when the target dies. It might just require an adjustment of gameplay on my part but I can't help but really despise how this feels during combat with multiple enemies or more difficult fights where rapid and clean target switching is a must.

As a final negative point, the camera can be terrible at times. When engaged in combat you can sometimes find yourself in a bush or something and completely incapable of seeing what's going on, especially if you get stunned and are unable to strafe out of it. What's more, getting backed into a wall makes your character disappear from the screen and puts you in a first person perspective that often annihilates your sense of combat (and more than once even literally prevented me from fighting, for whatever reason). Even backing down a hallway and having the camera hit a small object jutting out from a wall, like a lever, can cause it to begin to zoom in on you and again destroy your view of combat. In a game that is built around difficulty this sort of design is a massive flaw since it can get you killed and destroy quite a bit of progress all because of a technical camera issue.

In terms of boss fights they are largely endurance challenges wherein you will always have to survive roughly the same series of attacks (per boss stage) while often using a gimmick to find a way to deal damage. This boss can't be damaged by this type of attack, or that boss stuns itself under certain conditions. Nothing unique there, but the complaint is largely that this ends up feeling like an artificial difficulty barrier. There's no doubt that greater skill will win out, but I (and many of my Twitch viewers) felt that under all circumstances you going to have a protracted battle with every boss which inevitably felt like it was far longer than it had to be due to design instead of skill. I think this really says it's not "hard" because it's challenging, it's "hard" because the designers said so, in a manner of speaking. In DS2 I could sometimes go into a boss fight and just be in the zone and drop it in one try; in LotF I feel like I will always invest a serious amount of time in every boss for the sole reason that this is how the designers wanted it. It's almost as though they said, "C'mon, it's a boss. It should always take more than 15 minutes per fight where no amount of skill will make a mechanical difference."

All in all, I think it seems worth playing though not necessarily worth the price right now. With future updates, patches, and DLC it could turn into something worth spending a lot of time in. As of right now I find it to be a sub-par competitor in what it is helping to define as a new genre in gaming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lords of the Fallen is a Western RPG that bring you into the world as Harkyn, a middle aged man whom must face down foes called Rhogar in order to bring an end to an ongoing war between humanity and the fallen god Adyr.

    Possible Minor Spoiler!

The game starts off rather well by introducing you to all of the main mechanics of the game in a calm section of the game, allowing players new to the genre to adapt to the way the game works. The combat feels heavy and that it carries a lot of force behind each blow making but you, and your enemies, feel powerful. The game tries to encourage you to experiment with different weapons and make combos so that you'll have an easier time slaying your enemies, but it fails to teach you some other important things.

You will meet foes using both range and melee. Some are rather straight forward in how you kill them, using the same methods you've learned early on, but others take whatever you've learned and throws it in your face. Shield user in particular are much more obnoxious to fight for new players as the game doesn't teach you anything about breaking their guard. This leaves you either bashing on a shield that makes your every attack bounce off like a bouncy castle, or back peddling for days using your magic gauntlet in order to take them down. Later on you will also face enemies who are much faster than you are, making attacking near impossible without taking a large amount of damage, until you abuse faults in their AI.

Which brings me to one of the more disappointing things about Lords of the Fallen. The game feels very incomplete and this is noticeable rather early on. The magic gauntlet you get early on, which serves as your ranged weapon, has it's own category as a weapon. However, there are no other gauntlets to be found. There are only 3 different firing modes for the same gauntlet, which are all unlocked from the get-go, so it doesn't really count as 3 different weapons. Equally the other weapons in the game are all completely static in their shape and feel. You will constantly change out weapons and armors for other weapons and armors as their stats means everything. This gives a false sense of customization as the game very much forces you to use a weapon you don't really like the feel and look of due to superior stats.

The rune system is very much the same as it doesn't seem to have much thought put into it. You can get several types of runes, of varying quality, from shards you collect throughout the game. You take these to the blacksmith-guy-with-no-name-because-we-couldn't-think-of-one who can open them and give you the runes inside. But, of all the runes I found myself only using 2 of the 5 runes for my weapons and 3 of the 5 runes for my armors as those I didn't use was either inferior or rather useless.

The same unfinished business goes for the story-line, back-story and quests found throughout the game. The up front story is easy to predict and with stereo-typical characters making it rather boring and forgetful due to bad presentation. You never really feel any sort of connection to any of them as they seem to only appear when the story demands it before phasing out of existence again. This became a problem later on when I had a quest to gather tablets for Yetkha whom is one of these characters as she decided to either disappear before I had found all of them, or not accept them at all. There are also a back-story to be found, but it is very fragmented and it is again so badly presented I can't really remember most of it.

The visuals however seems to have gotten most of the attention as it is beautiful in it's own way. It manages to pull off a gritty look while not getting too washed out and bland. This gives the game a more relate-able feel to it, which in turn helps pulling you into the game. The animations are also great and flows rather well with some minor exceptions. The enemies look harrowing and intimidating with distinct differences from each other, again with some minor exceptions. The armor and weapon designs feels slightly overboard and while I understand they want you to feel powerful, it's not actually achieved by adding thousands of spikes to impale yourself on. It is overall a very good looking game whom manages to pull of a dark and gritty feeling.

In the end, Lords of the Fallen is a good game worth buying, but it lacks the finesse expected from it. The replayablity is lacking, but it will give you many hours on your first time through and some extra hours the second time through trying to gather everything you missed the first time.

    Overall
    + Good visuals
+ Combat feels heavy and powerful
    - Story is dull and forgetful
    - Many loose ends in the different side and back-stories
    - Poor customization
    - Dodgy and edgy mechanical moments in the game

They may be mostly minor bugs but it is a HUGE array of "minor" bugs. Ones that can ruin your game experience entirely. Audio not working, hidden walls not breaking, graphical glitches, weightless/bouncing ragdolls, stat changes misrepresented, quests not updating - lets not forget the game breaking bugs either, forcing you to make a new character to progress, or the ones that crash you out to your desktop/XMB etc. How about we then go on to talk about bad game design where quests and trophies refer to areas or items that are called something completely different in game?

The story was also nothing to write home about. In the start of the game you are thrown into what seems like the midpoint of a story about a criminal who was sprung from jail and asked to fulfill some divine deed which he just decides to do - no questions asked. The characters you meet along the way come and go without so much as a cut-scene and you find yourself pushing forward without really knowing why until you reach the last half hour of the game. By which point you find yourself no longer immersed in the game world and wondering why the game was allowed release with so many bugs and glitches.

May be worth playing in the future if the issues are ironed out but as it stands this game is not worth the full asking price.

The game plays decently, with interesting combat mechanics and variety of weapons, and offers good visuals but it is not enough to compensate for the dreadful story and the scarcity of enemies and environments. You will find yourself going back again and again to the same locations - not even a third of the size of what the Dark Souks titles offer - and fighting the same creatures. There is no clear storyline here and exploring is meaningless as you will be forced to visit the same areas several times during the playthrough.

At the technical level, Lords of the Fallen is plagued with graphical and sound glitches and some bugs. My PS4 crashed around 6-7 times when playing the game. The environment design is solid and the lightning effects do a pretty good job. Unfortunately, textures and elements popping up are a frequent issue, along with noticeable screen tearing at certain points, along with dropping frame rates. The sound effects have noticeable problems, with certain elements of the environment producing sound effects that pop up or disappear abruptly.

On average it is a decent game that outrageously copies the formula from another title. It has some entertaining value in it but it will not be remembered for a long time.

Lords is a solid and enjoyable action RPG, but suffers a little at the hands of over-ambition. [Issue#251, p.74]
