I really hate useless _/10 scores, but this platform forces one, so wait until the end for a recommendation on how much you should buy it for, as I feel it to be a more accurate representation of whether the game is, you know... worth it. It should be first noted that I got this game for free, and it's often on sale for under $5. Lords of the Fallen is a Souls-Like Action RPG by CI Games and Deck13 Interactive. A lot of people call it a poor man's Dark Souls, but... actually, I agree. It doesn't control as smoothly as Dark Souls, rolling especially feels like it's only possible with the lightest armor, and even then, it's very easy to still get clipped and consequentially lose half your health. The biggest problem I have with it is that it feels unfair, something that I rarely thought during my romp through the Souls continuum. I will admit that comparing it to Dark Souls is pretty unfair, but even on its own, this game is a little (Though not super) below average. Combat feels clunky, and the enemies have very large health bars in compensation for interesting attack patterns. I never found myself trying to memorize enemy placements and attack patterns on my way to a boss. Instead I just kind of trudged through the slew of tanky fodder for 15 minutes before getting to the either overly easy or ridiculously hard boss. The game is also pretty broken, shield bashing being an easy example of a way to cheese through the entire game. It's graphically impressive, however, and everything sounds pretty good too. Even the core mechanics are decent, but it's just very obvious the lack of polish put into the game. So, is this game worth it? On sale for under $5 I'd say, if you're a Dark Souls fan, that is. If you're not, I'd wait for it to be free, as I'm sure it will be some time soon.
(Edit: notice how I forgot about the story? Don't worry, you will too.)

I'm literally amazed there are so many '10s' for user reviews here, made me immediately suspect a PR move to curb the bad word of mouth about this game.

I picked this game up after the comparisons to Souls, me being a huge Souls fan. I shouldn't have even bothered. I was on the fence about buying this for a long time and I wish I had listened to my gut. Put it down after about 3 hours

I was on the fence about buying this for a long time and I wish I had listened to my gut. Put it down after about 3 hours of gameplay. There's lots of technical issue (framerate drops, audio bugs, crashing) that I've experienced. The combat is EXTREMELY clunky, slow, and disjointed. There's something 'odd' with the mocap and character models that just feels poor. The story and characters are bland.

They've done some cool things with this game. I particularly liked the way they transition from cutscene into action seamlessly. The XP/ghost mechanic is very cool. And, I like the GUI and itemization system more than Souls. It's a shame these supporting mechanics get totally outshadowed by poor core gameplay and performance.

If you're a Souls fan, don't waste your money.

I get that they are trying to be realistic with the attack speed and that battleaxes are heavy blah blah blah, but in a world with horned demon beasts and enchanted everything is it too much to ask that your armour clad hero is a badass with a sword????

the graphics are OK, the rest is crap.

The game tries to be like Dark Souls, but fails terribly. It is often confusing with no clear means to obtain goals, and where Dark Souls is a game based on strategy and skill Lords of the Fallen tends to be more about levelling up your gear so you can give and take more abuse. It simply lacks the controls and responsiveness to be anything like Dark Souls and skill often has very little to do with success in the game.

To make it worse, the character moves SUPER slow and the controls feel clunky and delayed. "Heavy" attacks can take around 3-4 seconds to "wind up" and execute, "rolling" out of the way of an attack takes a few seconds as well. It feels like the part of the movie in Austin Powers where the steam roller is slowly coming towards the guard and he just stands there in the way for 30 seconds without moving then gets rolled over. You see the hazard coming, you react to it, but then your character takes FOREVER to respond. The ONLY thing this game has going for it is the beautiful graphics. The initial difficulty is ridiculous, especially for rogue builds, forcing grinding. It then settles down to a reasonable plateau that is suddenly ramped up to 11 again for the final boss. This is especially true for ng+ and beyond where I have had to abandon a character because it couldn't do enough DPS to the final boss but was enough to get there in the first place. There is only one chance to respec but it uses a dual purpose item that can be used to get a weapon instead. There are plenty of hints on how to get special weapons by beating bosses a certain way in the various dialogues but it requires a specific path to hear them before the relevant bosses. I really didn't enjoy this as much as I'd hoped but it was all due to the lack of balance. It is also very short. I played through 4 characters to get the platinum and it took less than a week of determined slogging. A real shame. Expand

If you have to be productive in your life, don't buy the game! I am not the tipe of cold blooded person for such games like that. I may be a **** but anyone normal would be one, playing that game. I never finished the gameplay and only played the first sequence. I didn't want to confront myself with an in game boss again because that is even more difficult. I had no time to skill up the skilltree a lot. I only bought the game because I wanted to try a (but only halfway) German title and the cover (with that creepy guy who is looking into your eyes at the center of it) is impressive. It is for me a really good/attractive cover. It haunts me. I think now that this is the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life. The 50EURO price was too high. In the game you feel like you are really small and weak, and you are playing alone in this monotonous dark world against enemies which are huge and much stronger. You feel like lost. My heard beat raged. This makes you feel like that in real life if you pure boost yourself into the game and confront yourself with it strongly. My self consciousness shrinked a lot. I got to life with it now. I sold the game about two month ago. Avoid Lords of the Fallen! Sadly I can't sue the publisher. I have no words to express my anger. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As everyone was super-hyped when this game came out, everyone bought it out of sheer curiosity, wondering if it would surpass its rival game series: Dark souls. Anyone who played through it, however, would know that this game really isn't worth giving more than a few minutes to. Why?
Well, first of all, the mechanics are slow. Everything you do in this game makes you feel either uncontrollable (if you chose rogue) or useless (if you chose warrior). I bought this game on sale for 15 bucks, and i've never been this disappointed since i saw the graphics on an Xbox one. IF, and only if, you can adapt to the horrible mechanics, this game itself isn't really that much to brag about. The only reason i am not giving it a 0 is because the weapon-development is top-notch. But the story is hard to follow, boring to continue and so damn shallow. And the worst about all, is that the last boss is the (presumably) only good guy in the entire game, Antanas, who is trying to save humanity from their sins blah blah blah. Bossfight's unfair, and not in the fun, "damn i suck" kind of unfair you get from playing the Souls series. i'm talking about lagged strikes, useless dodging and inevitable death if you want to try blocking. All in all, i would not reccommend this game, even if it's on sale for 15 bucks.

A horribly hybridization of other games wrapped in an abused Dark Souls package, this game is a disgusting mess. And that's not even counting the awful bugs it had on launch.

Clearly built as a "me too" genre game on the heels of the Souls series, Lords of the Failure reeks of generic designs and gameplay. The combat is laughable when it's not borish, the story feels painfully close to an attempt to meld Souls with Gears of War (creating an awful and confusing mess in the end), and the graphics, while very well done, are dull and feel like the designs have been lifted from better games and movies. And graphical fidelity alone will never save a game

It attempts to mimic the Souls series so much so that it reaches the uncanny valley on that alone, making the entire gameplay process feel similar enough to be creepy. Though it does meander from the Dark Souls formula to try and become its own style, it does so in an awful and frustrating direction; if you've played the souls series, and enjoyed that gameplay, Lords of the Fallen will not deliver more of the same. If anything, it will leave you more disappointed than ever with its slow controls, awkward combat, over-the-top dramatic moves and opponents (The first "boss" you fight in the game at one point literally spins across the room like a dancer, flipping its great-sword around and around like an awkward LARPer), and lackluster story.

What brief glimpses you get of the plot is intriguing, but far too shallow to sustain interest The player is thrown into the role of some criminal named Harkyn. Immediately this removes a good deal of immersion from the game as you are now bearing witness to someone elses story rather than taking a part in your own. And though you have dialogue options, they don't provide any sort of branching story line or even personal changes to "Harkyn," regardless of your intentions. You are forever stuck as the gruff angry ex-con with a big sword and chip on his shoulder.

The end result is a clunky, crashy, cranky, crooked game that wishes it could be something great, but tries far too hard to be something worse in the process. The only good price is free, and then it's an abuse of HDD space. I can only surmise that once again, several people padded the score for this steaming pile of software. It gets a one simply because they patched most of the nonsense stability issues, but is still barely worth the effort.

There are several types of enemies you meet. Some of them are more difficult to kill than bosses. I don't mean that they're hard, just some bosses are too easy. In general, you beat most of bosses on first or second attempt once you've figured out their mechanics. The enemies you meet towards the end of game are a little uninspired but that has rather to do with the story. I'll just say that I never knew you could sprint so well in full plate armor.

    Graphics:
The game looks really well. Visuals, locations and settings are very appealing and interesting. Unfortunately there's a lot of backtracking. Initial satisfaction with presentation is diminished once you've realised you've seen whole place and than you simply backtrack to new bosses. There are also issues with performance and although I haven't tested it with any tools, you can feel drops in FPS and in places there's constant drop in FPS.

    Sounds and soundtrack:
This is the strongest part of the game - soundtrack is brilliant. Music, ambients and sound effects are fitting and well made. I wish there was more because tracks repeat too often and by the time you've finished game you may get a little sick with a few tracks that repeat most.

    Story and characters:
It's pathetic. I've guessed who's going to be the end boss nearly from the get go. Story is almost non-existent and what little we get is unsatisfactory. Characters are bland, boring and stereotypical. Some of them I don't know why where put into the game (because their impact is non-existent). Some of these characters' actions are hard to understand but I won't get into details (certain woman and certain huge monster). That's much to say considering this game has no more than 10 characters total of which maybe 3 say more than one sentence.

    Final notice:
The game was a tad unstable. I have played it in late 2015 so long after it was released and patched. During my playthrough I had about 3-4 crashes. It's a tad annoying considering this game's difficulty.

Overall I'd say this game could be described in one word - mediocre. It excels only in sounds department. I have finished it but I'd lie if I said I haven't forced myself a little to do this.

If you have nothing else to play and you can get it for no more than 15$, it's worth it.

Everybody keeps comparing this to DS. Whatever. Maybe it pretends to be something similar like DS? Still whatever. They claim that winning the fights is about timing and crap like that. Yeah, that might be true in some sort of way if you have Parkinson's. The only struggle so far I played were the controls and repetitive game play. The only struggle so far I played were the controls and repetitive game play. You get sort of normal enemies that you have to figure out how you beat them and then the stupid boss fights that are simple as hell but the only reason you get killed in them over and over again is the horrible controls that sometimes make your camera bounce around, target the right enemy etc.. If you want to get frustrated, play this game. Expand

Tries way too hard to be Dark Souls and fails miserably. literally every mechanic is ripped directly from the Souls series, but implemented so badly, s*** even the control layout is identical! It feels like a slow clunky mess...What is the deal with all these 10's??

Would not recommend this, and will not buy ANY CI Games products in the future. Buyer beware.

And you know if you are looking for Darksouls-Lite game to tide you over until the next DS, Nioh or Bloodborne comes out it could have just helpped you to scratch your itch.. but instead, because of the terrible frequency of crashing on even highend PCs, and PS4 and XBox too apparently, it ruined any value it might have offered.

Customer support tried but lacked a solution.
CIG bans anyone that politely begs for a solution on their steam forums. You'll notice a mysterious absence of crash complaints on Steam forums compared to other non-publisher controlled forums.

Was super hyped for it when I saw it's coming free for ps+ subscribers since I loved bloodborne, but this is a disappointing piece of ****. The design is beautiful, but the controls are slow, clumsy, and the game feels like it is not optimized at all.. There are parts of the game when the frame rate drops to a few pictures, and it has the same problem on PC and PS4.

It's like a mixture of Darksiders and dark souls made in china...

A packet of steak McCoy's next to Dark Souls II's ribeye. The action is handsome and combat can bite, yet with Bloodborne on the horizon, Lords is a bit of a hard sell. [Christmas 2014, p.86]

At times bearably similar to Souls, at others woefully at odds with its philosophy. [Christmas 2014, p.]

Lords is a solid and enjoyable action RPG, but suffers a little at the hands of over-ambition. [Issue#251, p.74]
