    For those that don’t know King’s Quest is a story led title in the same vein as games in the TellTale series, albeit with a little more in the way of ‘traditional’ gameplay’ scattered throughout.     One of the games major strengths, alongside its likeable lead character, is its quirky sense of humour and I was reminded of the Broken Sword series of games on more than one occasion. Unfortunately the second half of the game is almost completely ruined by the constant need to aimlessly wander around and backtrack in order to find the items required to progress. Games like The Walking Dead are often criticised for being so linear but if constantly wandering around the same environments until you stumble upon the right place is the alternative I know which one I’d choose. Another issue is the fact that many of the choices offered simply aren’t as important as the game would want you to believe and the story very often just plays out the same regardless of what you do.

    If you’re a fan of this genre, and more forgiving than I am of all the backtracking, King’s Quest is worth playing but I personally won’t bother with any further chapters.    … Expand

    I played all the King's Quests games as a kid. I've been waiting years for this and it did not disappoint. I am happy to have an adventure game that I can play with my kids! Love it!

    The first chapter of this game was a solid start. I loved the lighthearted nature of the game and the cartoony aesthetic. The world was beautiful and relaxing to be in. A nice change of pace from all the mature, violent games lately. The gameplay and puzzles were a bit lacking. The puzzles were pretty easy, but the backtracking got to me during the middle of the game where you had toThe first chapter of this game was a solid start.     Wonderful. Being a fan of the originals since I was very young, I was leery/skeptical/etc. I bought the Complete Collection, so I suppose I'm not sure how the rest will go rating-wise... but I have no regrets having spent $40 to experience at least this first chapter.

    Played with my kids in audience and it became a Knight to Remember. Just a really charming adventure from start to finish. After that first completion, kids have requested to play it again and again, and in doing so I have discovered the game can still be fresh and have new puzzles and solutions for you if you make different choices along the way. I have used up the 4 save slots for 4 completions, each time having a different Hideous Beast Eye as the Tournament Entry Ticket. Most other parts of the game also offer 2-3 different ways of progressing. Your actions also change the cutscenes between King Graham and Gwendolyn (his granddaughter) that take place between major parts of the story of Chapter 1.

    Although there was no cliff-hanger like you might be used to from Telltale Episodic games, I and kids are still eagerly looking forward to Chapter 2 because of how much we enjoyed Chapter 1.    … Expand

The gameplay isn't particularly challenging, but I don't usually associate "challenge" with the adventure genre. For me it's all about the story, characters, and environments, and King's Quest has those in spades.

    An utter joke that this trash was given away on ps+ this month. Usually part one is free anyway in adventure games to get the player interested in buying the following set of overpriced episodes.

    A poor excuse of a game (if you can call it that based on the fact it is not a complete game).

    Terrible, yawn inducing tat.

    Despite being unfamiliar with the original series I can still tell that this is a successful combination of the older elements of adventure games with the more modern improvements that have been popularized by developers like Telltale.     It does get off to a rather slow start at first. Things take a little bit to truly open up. You'll be lead down some very linear paths with incredibly simple puzzles early on. However once things truly start happening you'll notice just how complex the game has the potential to be. Although the solutions to the conundrums you'll encounter here are never really difficult to decipher. The only trouble you'll have in regards to figuring out what it is you are supposed to do just comes down to how many different areas there are to explore.

    It's not a huge world, but just big enough with enough areas to keep you guessing as to what needs to be used where, and at what time. It will never keep you stumped for long though. While that keeps things from getting truly exciting in the brain teaser department, it serves as a solid way to get players used to how they will interact with what are hopefully more complicated and complex puzzles in the future. Thankfully the game does manage to get the blood flowing in some exciting and action oriented quick-time events.

    With the gameplay coming off as a bit simplified for this introductory episode, the real thing to keep you going is the story. It's filled with charming characters, plenty of goofy humor, and great setting. The game has a fantastic cast of voice actors. The graphics are also a highlight. The game is visually reminiscent of the older animated films from Disney of the 60's and 70's. Particularly Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone.

    One thing that gets me particularly for the future episodes is the influence of player choice. That game hints early on that the decisions you make will have "far reaching consequences." Unfortunately we don't get much of a look at how much these choices are actually going to play in the long run. Some characters in the story will make light remarks based on your actions, but I never really got any indication that it actually affected how they felt about me. The biggest choice I made took place at the beginning of the game and it had no effect on the events of the rest of this episode.

    I played through this episode twice and the only influence I noticed my decisions had on the world was in the behavior of the player character's granddaughter. Based on the decision you make, she'll act differently in certain scenes. However these reactions from her felt disconnected from my actual choices. It doesn't actually feel like her behavior is being altered based on what she witnesses me do or by what I tell her. Instead it just feels like the developers just said "oh look he chose something different this time, how about we just change up some scenes a bit so he doesn't feel like he's watching everything over again." The differences between scenes including her just feel weird and disconnected from what's actually being fed to her.

    Things still have a way to go in this episode. We have yet to see if player-choice will actually have any relevancy, gameplay is a touch simple, and the puzzles lack the requirement of true thinking. But this is the opening episode so it's a little easier to forgive. It's also a pretty darn good one. It serves as a nice way to ease players into the mechanics that will make up the overall experience. Now that they've gotten that out of the way we can only hope they move onto grander and more complex things from here on out. Developer The Odd Gentlemen have given themselves a solid foundation. If they continue to build up on it from here then they could truly have the next great adventure game series on their hands. One that would be a welcome revival of an old, classic series. What they have so far is good, now I'm ready for them to make it great.

    Thought this would be a PS+ stealth demo but there is a lot of content. Really great adventure game that mixes the openness of Kings Quest with some modern adventure game mechanics. It is pretty open about being influenced by the The Princess Bride complete with the voice of Wallace Shawn. I wish TellTale games were this good. Get it.

    Very dull. 'Puzzles' if you can even call them that are so obvious and linear there is no challenge whatsoever. Story, characters and humour are all very shallow. Apparently the second chapter is even worse. I'm not sure who this game is for, too easy for adults to enjoy too dull to keep children interested. Best avoided.

    Taken as a free PS+ game. Great start of the series, funny, challenging enough, well spent time. Looking forward to the second part. I did enjoy the most funny dialogues and universum itself. Played together with my gf and had lot of fun together.

    For the players sho like adventures, a must have.

I used to love Adventure games, Secret of Monkey Islands, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath a Steel Sky, the Amiga 500+ had an endless stream of great adventure games to play through.     This game is a little hit and miss for me.

    I used to love Adventure games, Secret of Monkey Islands, Simon the Sorcerer, Beneath a Steel Sky, the Amiga 500+ had an endless stream of great adventure games to play through. One thing I loved about those named is the randomness of solutions, having things at your disposal and trying to USE this with THAT and the sarcastic reply of the character, or, my surprise as he does something weird and wonderful with the mix of items.
    Kings Quest fails on this account. A lot. It's just too easy, the puzzles are between obvious and non existent. There's no setting to play on a harder level, making the puzzles harder would elevate this game from a 7 to a 10 in my opinion.

    Why a 7?

    Because this game is overspilling with charm. The graphics are exceptional, like watching a cartoon. The voice work in this game is as exceptional as the graphics. The playful story telling and wit reminded me a lot of the games of old, whilst the humour upon dying gets better and better throughout. The game works well, it's not glitchy or broken, no heavy load speeds and there's enough of it to make this a good little game to play through in an evening.

    If this is to be a long series of Kings Quests coming to PS4, I hope this was purposefully easy to not put people off, but please Sierra, you've made some amazing Adventure games of old, bring back the depth in the puzzles and you would have earnt yourself a born-again-Sierra fan!    … Expand

    I got this game because it was free on PS Plus this month and it was worth my time. I loved the humor and art style, although I had to backtrack a lot which made the game sort of tedious but other than that I really enjoyed the first chapter

    I played this week, not worth it, since I got from psn, nothing to complain. I really expected something more, story is soso, characters ok, but I was not entertained with this game.

    I grew up playing all the Kings Quest games. Was excited to download these on my new PS4...Chapter 1 was great, lots of different scenes, characters, puzzles and adventures.     My thanks go out to whoever at Sony was responsible for choosing King's Quest: A Knight To Remember as a free Plus title. It's an outstanding piece of work that surprised me not only for being a wonderful experience in a genre that I usually avoid, but also by coming from a studio whose past work gave no clue that they were capable of such. My hat is off to the The Odd Gentlemen, red feather and all.

    Currently an uneven mix of old school vs. new, and goofy vs. serious. A somewhat shaky start. Hopefully this won’t make for a receding heir line. [November 2015, p75]
