As you can probably tell I am an inFAMOUS fan. Infamous 2 is in my top 3 favorite games ever, and one of the reasons I remain a gamer. This game took a sh*t on my high expectations for this franchise. It's not terrible for a game, but for the franchise

This is a great open-world exploration type game with a super-power type twist that makes it different from other parkour/roof climbing exploration games like Assasin's Creed, Far Cry or Dying Light. If you haven't played any other inFAMOUS games already, then this one is a great introduction to the genre and concept. I wasn't familiar with the series prior to this game and I found it very easy to understand and get into.

The game is extremely fun, and the combat mechanics are interesting and different from most games-- there isn't a lot of melee fighting and most skills are at range. The way the abilities are managed is fantastic, and exploring your new skills and receiving them is ridiculously addicting. Using them is pretty amazing too-- they feel intuitive and natural, even though it takes some getting used to.

The story is not the strongest, and the over-used Troy Baker is voicing yet another lead, but it is heartfelt and interesting and I can't really fault it. It is solid. The characters are likeable, even the lead, who can be annoying at times. The graphics are beautiful, with Seattle coming across even better than it really does. The content isn't huge, it will keep you immersed for a good week most probably (if you do side quests and such) but you could probably rush it in a few days.

I really enjoyed this game, and I missed leaving the inFAMOUS world when I was done. I wish they'd release some DLC or another stand-alone pack (there is one, but it somehow was less fun for me), perhaps from the point of view of another character, or even if the main from this game came back, that'd be awesome.

Super heroes naturally lend themselves to video games, with their extraordinary plights and powers. This is likely why Infamous: Second Son succeeds at being a fundamentally enjoyable experience. This is likely why Infamous: Second Son succeeds at being a fundamentally enjoyable experience. Yet, it is worth wondering how much more interesting Second Son could have been if the developer had taken more creative risks. Beyond some stellar acting and visual niceties, there isn’t much to appreciate. The formula is heavily iterated upon, but still feels middling when compared to competing products.

A core issue is the loosely structured and insubstantial narrative. Second Son is engaging in moment-to-moment plot events, but lacks overall cohesion. The story could be drastically reordered or slimmed down without consequence. If not for outstanding performances by Troy Baker (Delson), Travis Willingham (Reggie) and Christine Dunford (Augustine), Second Son would be a literal collection of self-contained circumstances without an anchor. Even the moral alignment system (which is typically a highlight of the franchise) is plagued by these issues. None of the ethical decisions players make follow a linear progression, resulting in a forced and undeveloped selection of endings. This is particularly upsetting because previous Infamous titles have significantly offset their own problems with memorable finales.

Some of these recurring gaffes carry over into Second Son, most notably the repetitive gameplay. Despite featuring polished traversal mechanics and an enormous play space, there is alarmingly little to do. Opportunities to fight enemies or perform heroic deeds appear constantly, but can usually be resolved in seconds. The sole alternative to this mindless scavenger hunt is a sparse quantity of story missions. While these missions are cleverly constructed and take full advantage of Second Son’s foundational strengths, their inherent creativity emphasize the unhealthy ratio of necessary to unnecessary content. It raises the question of whether or not Second Son was unduly rushed to arrive within the Playstation 4 launch window.

Though if the game was rushed, plenty of resources were still allocated to refining the visuals. The graphical composition of Second Son is easily its most consistent and carefully crafted element. Artistically, it leverages the serene lighting and color palette of the Pacific Northwest to generate a wonderfully unique atmosphere. Combined with impeccable motion captured animations and sharp textures, Second Son is dazzling in motion. Its lone visual caveat is somewhat unstable performance. Even on the beefier Playstation 4 Pro hardware, Second Son cannot run at a locked framerate. Dropped frames mostly result in inconsequential stuttering, but also occasionally slow intense action to a crawl. Had these densely packed areas been further optimized, Second Son would be a definitive technological showcase for the Playstation 4.

Additional development time could have made Second Son an overall consummate title for the console. Producing more diverse mechanics for the gameplay loop would have substantially benefitted the entertainment factor of Second Son, and allowing the writers more leeway to sculpt a traditional narrative would have mitigated how arbitrary the game feels. Another marked improvement would have been for the engine programmers to establish a 60 frames per second lock, given the focus on precise world navigation and combat. Otherwise, what remains is an arguably standard superhero escapade.

I played it for 30 minutes and then I deleted it.So boring. I heard that now with the release on PS4 is better and I wonder how bad game it was without the improvements?
Anyway for the records the game came to my library because i am a psn plus member and it was a free game. Lucky me, i did not pay it.

The gameplay is flawless and complex. Your powers are not only incredibly well designed and a pleasure too look at, they're also very diverse and great to use. They feel natural and interesting. The game has numerous activities aside from the main story which are very fun to do. I usually only went to main-story missions after hours of side-quests.Fun!

The story is captivating and interesting as well. Following a very dinamic and funny character, the story is easily the best in the franchise if you ask me.

The main story playthrough is not that long, but it might as well count as half of the game, since it should be done in two playthroughs (good and evil). Because you mainly have different powers, activities, missions, etc, so the second time around it will probably be just as fun.

It's a great game from all aspects and I want to thank and congratulate Sucker Punch and Sony for what they've achieved. Amazing!

Immediately you start the game and are just in awe of how much detail was put into it. The water actually looks like water, the faces look every bit as impressive as Killzone Shadow Fall's (minus the horrible audio-lip sync issues that KZ:SF had) and good god...when you arrive at the destination you spend most of the game in (Hint: It's a Washington State city...)...don't even get me started on how cleverly the environmental elements are place and work with you. The particle effects...beautiful.

My ONLY complaint with the game: 3 separate occasions in the entire game (not too shabby) I watched civilians walk into walls and momentarily glitch. This type of thing takes away from the immersion, BUT it's not enough to take away from the game as a whole.

Delsin, unlike Cole, has a fantastic personality and sense of humor. While I appreciated Cole and had respect for the character, video games are about escape into the world the character are in. I'd compare the personalities of Cole and Delsin to that of Batman and Iron Man, respectively. Sure, I could be a hard-ass with the occasional one-liner...or I could have some fun being the immature brat with superpowers. Both have their place in video games and media in general, but I enjoyed how Delsin takes the situation he's in seriously while not taking HIMSELF too seriously.

I don't know how exactly to explain it...but this game feels...well, FUN. It's fun in a way many games aren't able to be. It creates scenarios where you can say "wait...I can climb up THAT?" or "Ha, I didn't know I could use that as an energy source!" or "Wow, I wasn't expecting that to happen!" In the same way some of the greatest games of the all time have done, Infamous Second Son challenges players to actually have fun at the same time as playing through the story. You're not saying "ugh, if I could just get past this one part...". You're saying "I liked the way that felt!".

Second Son is a harmonious melding of an intriguing story (especially when you take it to it's fullest potential with "Infamous Paper Trail") and entertaining gameplay. Maybe the plot isn't a highly cerebral one as is that of "Bioshock Infinite", but it doesn't have to be. It's a perfect balance that makes the world and it's characters come to life.

The story might not be as elaborate as some of the overly scripted games of today, however, this doesn't take anything away from the game due to its great gameplay.

A shallow and unambitious tech demo, of the sort that launch window games are known for. The action is pretty good but it’s instantly repetitive to the point of inanity. The story wasn't very good either. Honestly, a single player (only) game that only has a 5 - 8 hour campaign is not getting a high score out of me.

ISS borrows, smartly, from other successful games. If you enjoyed collecting items and completing missions off of the in-game map in Assassin's Creed (and I do), you will find more of it here in ISS. If you liked upgrading skills and searching for new ones, that's here too. Snappy control and marvelous graphics come together to give the player with these preferences lots to do.

I should also mention that the characters are very likeable, which surprises me a little. They seem a little more human than in any game I've played (probably due in part to the exceptional facial capture technology and excellent acting).

Also, the games looks absolutely outstanding.

Some reviewers have mentioned that the gameplay is repetitve after a while. They must be playing a different game because I've not seen this at all. In fact, I'm not sure what they're referring to exactly.

Great graphics and gameplay, however the story is all skin and bone with no meat what so ever. The karma system has also been reduced to bare minimum and only exists for 3 karma missions to unlock karma aligned abilities.

This game is more like a reboot rather than a sequel given the change in tone which I can only imagine is to appeal to a wider audience.

With this new protagonist, we players can relate much more to the inFamous universe. Very well done. The A.I. isn't as weak as the first two. Similar, but improved. As the game opens, we see our hero rebelling like any normal angst filled teenager, making "elaborate" graffiti work on pictures of his loving family. Just don't mind the fact that he is well over twenty and his antics are the definition of childish.

The opening of the game says everything you would need to know. It is an under developed child trapped in an adult body. Visually you will be deceived but as you become acquainted you quickly grasp just how underdeveloped and mentally lacking the game truly is.

The game brings nothing new to the infamous table, the protagonist gets 4 powers each of which contains the same spells: A ranged attack (like a gun), a sprint, a ranged power attack (grenade), and a melee attack combo, and a finishing move that removes all difficulty or thought. The only thing that each individual power does is change the particle effect surrounding that move. I guess they also add an extra grind to the game farming all 5 of your moves 4 times is a much cheaper way to make a game then giving you 20 unique powers... so I gotta give the developers their points for that. Cole brought a lot to the table in the previous games with more abilities in his 1 conduit power. Delsin brings a small fraction to the table with 4 powers, he makes up for this though with his angst and hipster beenie. 1.0

Graphically the game is definitely the beginning of a next gen, its very polished and runs smoothly but nothing mind blowing, it pulls out the bare minimum it should be with the power it has behind it. Other games have already pushed the graphics and frame rate to much higher calibers then this game dares to. It is a let down as they had so much potential but left it high and dry. 1.0

The sound work in the game is definitely the best part, it does not disappoint in the slightest, each power gets a unique sound set, the different sounds are integrated beautifully and play simultaneously in a way that makes the world feel more realistic then any previous game could hope to do. The voice work is acceptable with some of the cheesy or cliche writing getting in the way, but over all this is the most inspiring part of the game. Its just too bad they couldn't pick some better songs and give it a story. The sound is good but it has no backbone to stand with. 8.0

The game starts fairly strong giving you new powers and pushing you along, but forgets major portions of what a game must have. A purpose, the game is so lacking in this point. early in the game the antagonist has the hero trapped and tortures his people. Augustine is a no holds bar villain from the very beginning a cruel woman that tortures innocent villagers to learn of your secret conduit abilities. Yet she does NOTHING with this information. She simply leaves you in your bed, because why not. The game doesn't have just 1 glaring inconsistency, it seems each mission was written by completely different people with nothing but a cliff note to go off of for previous missions and story. By the end of the game there was no way of knowing what the intended story was supposed to be, large chunks of the story seem to be missing completely. Delsin is tasked with doing something to help bring down the DUP but is quickly met with a new mission talking about new characters and developing a new plot line which is left to dry on a clothesline and never returned too. A good 60% of the game has nothing to do with the main story, just a side character wanting help with their problems then you jump back to main story which has progressed without your involvement or knowledge. I would call it a story but was left with jay dropping shock by the blatant disregard to keep anything consistent. 0

Finally the part everyone cares about. Game play and replay - I finished the game with a playtime of 5:47 minutes. I fully unlocked 4 of the (I wanna say 13 zones but can't be bothered to turn it on... just too disappointed) I left all the other zones at the final step before they are clear (the showdowns). I had a friend come over and just play the story at streamlined speeds. It was incredible how fast he finished a whopping 4 hours and 12 minutes. The game play is lacking entirely there are 4 types of missions 1 that require you kill DUP agents, and the 3 that require nothing but quick filler. As far as replayability goes these missions are it a whopping 4 mission types that you have to do 13 times each. Thats the entire game. THey force some of them on you to prolong the story as you cannot unlock certain story missions until you have killed some DUP forces. So if you want to play wheres waldo in a 20 foot circle with 7 people or spray paint 13 walls with tags, then what are you waiting for this game literally has everything you've ever wanted. There is a set of missions where you listen to audio logs but they are independent and completely pointless.

In all I'd say wait it out the game is not worth $60 and is not a good start for the PS4's life.

It definitely isn’t one of those games you talk about years after its release, but it showcases PS4’s capabilities well and in contrast to Killzone: Shadow Fall also does something else – guarantees fun from the beginning till the end. [CD-Action 05/2014, p.58]

Fun romp, beautifully rendered and executed. Fantastic superpowers make up for the lack of depth. [Issue#241]

inFamous: Second Son is not a bad sandbox game at all! Serves as an interlude while waiting the heavy hitters to arrive. [Apr 2014]
