A great TRPG designed for PS4 and PS Vita, complex and varied enough to keep players glued to their control pads till the very end of the adventure.

This is a beautiful tactics RPG with an enormous storytelling arc, varied turn based battles and a motivating troop management.

Grand Kingdom is one of the best tactical RPG games of the recent years. Its gameplay is amazing and features a fantastic online mode. Besides, in this game you will find lots of extras and secrets that have to be discovered.

I loved my time with Grand Kingdom and was surprised by how much depth there is to the game. The RPG mechanics feel rewarding and there’s plenty to experiment with. It’s a game that will take some time getting used to but the reward for doing so is fantastic.

The story might be forgettable, but Grand Kingdom‘s gameplay certainly is not. This is a game that features a refreshing and unique battle concept for a genre that can often feature formulaic combat, mixing its deep mechanics to bring a challenging, beautiful and inventive game that is a fascinating breath of fresh air for tactical RPGs.

For the patient, though, Grand Kingdom is very worthwhile stuff. As a debut, it proves that Monochrome Corporation is a talented development outfit, and this is one of the more original takes on the tactics genre that we’ve seen in recent years.

Grand Kingdom is a solid strategy/RPG, especially if you've been hankering for something new and different.

I enjoyed Grand Kingdom quite a bit. On paper this game is everything I want in an SRPG, but it did leave me feeling a little underwhelmed. With a stronger narrative stitching everything together, I think it really would be the total package.

Approach it like a story-driven RPG, expecting to be absorbed by an epic tale and a cast of likeable characters, and you may be left underwhelmed by what’s on offer despite the solid gameplay. If you put in the time and effort however, creating a group of mercenaries that you strive to develop further by engaging in the well developed turn-based battle system both online and off, then Grand Kingdom will prove to be a graciously rewarding experience.

Grand Kingdom is a grand triumph of innovation and amalgamation, standing alone as a semi-new type of JRPG altogether. Mixing elements from other JPRGs, classic fighting games, and board game elements into an all new experience, Grand Kingdom will have some dedicated players still moving troops through enemies lands for years to come.

Turn-based role-playing mixed with real-time combos and complex battle systems from a variety of inspirations equals one unique SRPG.

Grand Kingdom is a great tactics game that demands patience because it isn't an easy one, has many options and a not-so-easy-to-handle progression curve. It's complex gameplay mechanics might make the less patient players abandon it.

Grand Kingdom is a great Tactical RPG with deep, fun and dynamic combat system, good art direction and an original online system. However, has too many trial and error moments.

An unusual mixture of influences, that builds a pleasingly unique strategy role-player out of otherwise very familiar components.

Grand Kingdom is not for every JRPG player out there, since its main quest and its characters are far from unforgettable. But for every lover of complex, meaningful, deep, fully customizable SRPGs, it's definitely a must.

Grand Kingdom’s blend of board game-style map exploration and intriguing lane-based combat is something you won’t find anywhere else on PS4, and that’s really what makes it something to be savored.
  25. It’s not attractive or even very welcoming, but get past this deceptively off-putting veneer and you might just find a game of turn-based tactics worth getting lost in for a few days or a few weeks.

Grand Kingdom is a strong tactical title that will ignite your inner sellsword. Some minor difficulty spikes can't upset the entertaining strategy action being served up here, and with tons of content on offer, this is a game that you could potentially still be playing this time next year.

Bland ancillary elements can't derail Grand Kingdom's razor-sharp focus on inventive tactics gameplay.

I feel mixed on Grand Kingdom because I want to like it, but it just seems lackluster on its feedback loop of repetitive mission design; there is nothing that significantly caught my attention outside of the intricacies of battle from constantly building parties of different classes. Its story is severely lacking, and the War mode has a few neat quirks that overstayed its welcome rapidly. Grand Kingdom is an entertaining experience that presents neat, unconventional approaches to the genre, but there are so many aspects of its infrastructure that just seem haphazardly unrealized.

The story and setting are a bit flat, and it's hard to tell when the friendly fire is going to strike your fighters, but, aside from this, Grand Kingdom offers deep strategic gameplay that will surely be enjoyed by anyone who has ever had interest in turn-based strategy games.

The last tactical RPG from Tomohiko Deguchi deserves to be explored thoroughly, thanks to its variety of situations and the deep gameplay. The PS4 and PS Vita versions are almost identical, with cross-play support.

Grand Kingdom features a vibrant and charming art style along with a surprisingly well implemented multiplayer mode. However, the lackluster story and repetitive combat that sits at the very core of the experience holds the game back from greatness.

The online system would be fun, if it was fair. Sadly, you go in with a party you have worked hours on to grind up to level 9 and fight AI parties of 15+, with A rankings in prime stats. And there is no 'surrender' option in a fight, so you WILL be killed, if you run away the AI WILL chase you down, and WILL keep killing you untill you abandon the mission or run out of moves, all while being forced to watch each attack and loading screen.

The items that let you raise your attributes affinity (needing less bonus points to gain extra stats) are on the cash shop for real money, making this game a freemium game you have to BUY first. I want to love this game, but it lacks and sort of balance and exp gains are less battle related and more quest bonuses leading to those same high level units winning and you wasting time on a lost cause.

This game does some things extremely well, and other things extremely poor.

    Pros:
    - Seamlessly combine RPG, strategy, action and puzzle
    - Satisfying turn based combat
    - War is a nice touch, albeit without real rewards other than occasional scroll if you're very lucky
    - Japanese voice acting is very well done
    - High replay value, provided that you can get past the repetitiveness of battle scenes.

    Cons:
    - Story is as generic and cliche as it gets.
    - Lack of variety in items and enemies. Items especially, because you end up with either just one or two choices for your slots at given levels.
    - Classes are unbalanced. Valkyries are clearly the best char, while Challengers are clearly the worst.
    - Induces claustrophobia after a while, because you spend most of your time in that same battle scene, over and over.
    - No surprise but English voice acting is below average.
    - Oversexualization of some characters. Gets embarrassing in front of kids.

Conclusion: While it was entertaining for a short while, I've already moved on as of 7/7. I think it's a decent game, but I won't be buying a sequel.
