When are we going to stop celebrating someone sexuality as an achievement! This game try to push some hidden Agenda that Homosexuality is something Big which is not, it’s just an orientation just like bisexual and any other sex inclination.

A two hour commercial for the alphabet people. If this wasn’t full of emotionally manipulative pandering woke garbage it would score a 4 at best. If you think it’s a huge revelation to learn someone is gay at this point go ahead and waste your time. For anyone else-I just saved you two hours. Your’e welcome!

It's basically a "look meticulously through a storage room of just tons of old junk" simulator. Ultimately, you click on a random notebook and it fades to black with a short voiceover and the game is over before anything ever happened... yet IGN gave this a 9.5 probably because it's WOKE! If you think that a silly idealized stereotypical filled with clichés story becomes great just by adding homosexuality to it, you may enjoy this game a lot. Otherwise you will probably find this walking simulator a short pretentious and infuriating experience.
The only think I liked was OST due the female-fronted punk bands.

Very nice game and quick to complete. A very simple graphic adventure in which you have to collect diary pages in order to complete the story they tell. History is truly a swing of emotions. Other than the wonderful storyline, the game doesn't offer much high, but it's still a very enjoyable experience.

If you take the time to carefully explore the environment, the game tells a hidden, dark story that goes beyond a good, main plot (though it is very easy to miss, and this takes away from how you think of the game after your first and likely only playthrough).

However, there are several factors holding this game back. There is almost no replayability because it is not the type of game you would want to play again. Nothing is really done with the horror element the game teases the whole game. The game is overpriced because the game's content is too short. I was surprised at how early the game ended. The gameplay could have been improved apart from being a walking simulator.

This game completely changed the world of video games. The atmosphere is what drew me in, but the idea of quiet exploration to unwind a dramatic story is terrific. The game developers create a wonderful sense of time and place; a time of cassette mixes, riot grlllls , and without omnipresent mobile devices.

you spend these 2 hours finding out where everyone went…
the game is set in the mid 90s, it does a decent job at setting the house with nostalgic items like board games, answering machines, vhs tapes, cassettes and game cartridges, though as a 90s kid myself.. none of this really hit me and brought me back…
the house didn’t really feel 90s to me as everything sortve felt like decoration, the house didn’t really feel lived in to me…
You can interactive with practically everything in the game, rotate items to inspect them, and the occasional note and letter will give more insight into what exactly happened, and who her parents were and what they did and their own problems theyre dealing with..
Im not going to spoil the story, ill just say its really touching and heartbreaking at times..
listening to the occasional voiced dialog while you explore this house is the best part of the game…
however I feel this game is a tad bit overrated and I cant really go into why without spoiling the story…
But once you play it I think the reason for this game getting such high scores will be fairly apparent..
as the experience isn’t really that special… youre just looking through things, and stumbling on the occasional secret until you’ve found what you needed for the end game…
I didn’t find game progression to be clever, I just felt my heartstring pulled on a little bit here and there…
Gone Home is a good experience..
but it isn’t this masterpiece you’ve been hearing about for years
    I give Gone Home

One day, our English teacher told us “we are going to play a computer game in class”. I was so surprised. Computer games to me is just either one of these; guns and knives flying around with glamorous fighters or building a town and collecting items by repeating particular steps. However, the game called ‘Gone Home’ was totally different. I would like to write a review about this creative, sensational, and fantastic game for those who didn’t get a chance to play it yet. And don’t worry, there aren’t any spoilers that can bother you enjoying the game.
As we can infer from the name of the game, we explore a house where Greenbriar family lives. As a user, you become Kaitlin Greenbriar, who is the oldest daughter of the family. Kaitlin returned from her one-year Europe trip but nobody is in the house greeting her. Her parents went on a vacation and her younger sister, Samantha is not in the house for some reason (you must find this out while you are playing the game!). There are pictures and many evidence that you can guess the personality, appearance, hobbies of the family members and you would feel like they are people in reality. The evidence are very detailed which make you think that actually the Greenbriar family exists and that they had experienced the situation described in the game. I was also very impressed by the realistic details hidden in the house and also the clear graphics helped me when searching for clues. Moreover, the dark, raining day made the mood of the game very calm and depressed which indirectly implies the reason why Sam ran away from home.
You will easily be ‘addicted’ to this game, in other words, you can’t stop this game until you finish it because it stimulates your curiosity. ‘Gone Home’ is just like a crime scene where the evidence are hidden and users get a chance to become Sherlock Holmes. Not only the items with clues can be zoomed in but we can also click the ones that are unrelated with the theme such as water bottles, deck of cards, tissue boxes and so on. Moreover, you can’t get the full map of the house which means that you have to make your own way to find secret passages and unrevealed places. This game is even more challenging because all places are dark until you find and turn on the lamp. I think making all places dark is a fantastic feature of this game since it makes the players feel like they are pioneers or explorers. As more and more items or journals are founded, you will become more curious about the theme of the story, which is one of the reasons why I love this game so much. All clues are linked to a whole big mysterious story which explains why Sam ran away from home. At first, each clue seems nothing to do with other clues however, as you play the game, you will realize that there is a well-designed plot. I am sure that you will also feel some kind of pride as you get closer to the truth that the game is hiding. Furthermore, even if you finished the game (you will get the sign if you finish the game) you will probably want to go back and play again since now you know that there are secret passages. Also, even if you finished the game, you might not have all the clues because you can finish the game without knowing the whole truth. This will also act as one of the reasons why you might want to go back and start again. And the most important thing is that this game’s theme is not limited to families but is deeply intertwined with the social atmosphere in the 1990s. This meaningful theme makes ‘Gone Home’ an educational game which is often used as a class material.
You can use functions such as ‘crouch’ to see things under your eyes. You can also zoom in and take a closer look of an item that you want to get information about. You can also collect the evidence as well as the Sam’s journals, and see the map of the house. With all of these operations, you can move freely in any direction. Also, I strongly recommend this game because it provides high-quality graphics. Low-quality graphics often makes users frustrated since it distracts users when they want to concentrate on the game.
At last, there is one weakness of this game; spoilers are poisonous. When you are playing games such as Sudden Attack, Overwatch, or League of Legends, even if you know all information about the characters and techniques, without practices those information are useless. However, in the case of ‘Gone Home’, if you know the theme, secret passages, evidence and so on by spoilers, you curiosity will be diminished which will greatly reduce your interest in this game. That is why users who want to enjoy ‘Gone Home’ must be extremely careful not to click on spoilers.
To sum up, I strongly recommend this game for those who want to be Sherlock Holmes, know about the teen culture in the 1990s, and their creativity and curiosity to be stimulated. Just avoid looking at spoilers, then you will definitely enjoy the game as I did.

I've played this game on Steam and frankly, I was initially thought that this game was an exploration of wonders, it turns out to be a very underwhelming story of a lesbian sister running away, a story I read in many fanfics and dramas, had the game have a wider scope of form in storytelling I would have easily accept it, turns out that the scope is not only narrow, it is shallow at its very best.

The story I find very reminiscence of fanfics water downed for the broader audience, story I find no area of relation. The tale of her lesbian sister running away makes the mundane story little sense. Even my lesbian friends find this game insulting as it not only did not propelled the LGBT community, it set them back to the stone edge.......

If the weak story could not even holds water on its own, you are left with a game that walk around and interacting object which is pretty much the trash heap Steam is pilling on. The game claim it recieve a graphical update, yet I was shocked it receive little to nothing on the real deal, polygon still did not properly anti aliasing, and clunky controls? Are you kidding me, an minimal interaction game that still required to precisely aim at the object to pick it up??? The lighting are acceptable when its on PC, but holy crap its very washed out when play on the Playstation 4......

The only reason I was able to even play this game on the Playstation 4 was its PS + membership free games, with games like Gravity Rush and Rebel Galaxy with superior gameplay, better, more subtle storytelling, and most importantly superior overall experience, Gone Home is an attempt by Sony to deliver and unwanted game that bundled together with superior games to bypass on the month of September.

With a questionable ideal on a game that offer a poorer fanfic story, poor game-play, mediocre graphic made worse of very little upgrade to the Playstation 4 version, it is a game you would prefer to avoid spending your money, play it for free to see the inadequacy of its deliverance .

Gone Home is exceptionally well written, cleverly designed and a very memorable experience that's deeply engrossing and just really beautiful. It is easily one of the best, if not the best, game of its kind.

Probably the most boring "game" i have ever played. Reading boring notes, with a boring story in a boring house. Yay. Wouldn't have wished this "game" on my worst enemy. I even created an account just to put another warning out there of how bad this walking simulator is.

Walk around, be in a 90s home, listen to riot girl music, read letters, listen to journal entries, slowly learn about peoples lives and why they aren't home to greet you and that's all you do. I liked it.

Most people giving this game a bad review seem inherently opposed to the concept. Do they not read up on a game before purchase? Come on.

Thank god, it was free on PS4.

Good graphics, good voice acting and that's about it. You basically wander around a mansion looking for scraps of paper that'll eventually let you know your sister's a lesbian. Hence the praise by the professional critics. LESBIANS!

No game in recent memory has elicited such a range of emotions as Gone Home did. I cannot recommend Gone Home enough! Expand

Talk about the "greatest video game love story ever told", that little sister is just some spoiled girl who really enjoyed herself being in this forbiden love tragety, whining and complaining how her parents being the villians in her love story, but at the same time she didn't even notice or care a bit that her parents's marriage was on the edge already. She is just too shallow to make me care for her and her love story, no matter who she is in love with.

Well, since it is free on PS+ now I guess more console players can see it for themselves. I really don't recommend it and I feel sorry for those who paid 20 dollars for this game and turned out to have similar feelings like me. And I surely will stay away from the games by the developers of this game in the future.

Whoever decided to make this game free on PS+, you might have made a mistake. You really should keep selling it at 20 dollars so less people will find out this game was over-priced and over-rated.

It's like someone cooked a bread, and you eat that bread, and he begin to tell you at what market he bought the flour, who gives the bill, what he was wearing, the sun was shining, the music was electric, he eat at breakfast eggs, served on a blue plate with a scrath...

I would call it an interactive story but there is no need for interaction other than opening doors and looking at notes that poorly try to strike up a good storyline. This game got praised because the gaming journalists tried to push an agenda. Calling it the GOTY destroys their credibility. Look up reviews on Youtube. At least they are by unbiased people who aren't friends with the developers like most of these gaming websites are. *SPOILER*:
You come home to an empty house. As you try to piece together where everyone went, you find out about 20 minutes in that your sister has come out as being a lesbian. In the end, you find out that she has ran away with her lover and your parents are on a couple's retreat. DUMB.

If the sister ran away with a boy, would it receive such high praise? Absolutely not. This game is trying to drill an agenda and fails horribly at it.

This is a game made for people who care about a story. You walk, you read and you get to know the characters' feelings. There's no action, but still the atmosphere is so worked that keeps you in tension during all the experience. Also, the game is full of nice details, and I personally loved the sister's character.

But wait, would I pay 20 dollars for that? Definitely not. Nice PSN game, tho.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I downloaded this game after reading glowing reviews, praising the love story, the writing, the atmosphere, etc., but I was confused when I booted it up. Was this a horror game? It's got all the tropes: a dark and stormy night, a house full of flickering lights, creaky floorboards, white noise from a TV set... But a friend who'd played it assured me it wasn't a horror game. Despite that claim, it still felt like I was playing P.T. or something like it; like I would turn the corner and there would be a tall, shadowy figure, waiting to disembowel me. That never happened though. In fact, nothing really happened.
The focus of the game (it's a stretch to call it a "game", per se, but whatever) is to learn about your sister's recent dealings through audio journals you pick up (somehow?) while exploring the empty house. My problem with this is that Sam (your sister) is a completely selfish and unlikable character. I found myself annoyed listening to her ramble on about this girl she's crushing on in school. I wasn't interested in her story, or even her parents' stories (you also learn a little bit about their careers and struggles in their marriage... apparently?), but the only story that caught my attention was about the previous owner of the house, your father's uncle. The few times he gets mentioned, I got excited, but then Sam would start talking about Millie or Lily or whatever her name was and it dragged me back down to the boring drudge that is the majority of this game.
Like I'd mentioned earlier, it has all the tropes of a horror game, from the lightning crashes to the pitch-black rooms (though you can play with all the lights on). You learn that several people refer to this home as "the psycho house", referring to Oscar, the previous owner. There's a Ouija board hidden in a side panel, you find a hidden room where Sam and Filly were trying to summon the spirit of Oscar, there are a couple books referencing the occult, you see a cushion fort in front of the TV where Sam and Billie were apparently watching Poltergeist... But it's just building up to disappointment. None of it affects the plot in any way.
All of the horror elements feel unfitting for Gone Home. It teases the supernatural, that maybe there's a killer in the house, or maybe a ghost? You even see some red splotches over a bathtub which you instinctively presume to be blood. None of it pays off. There's no ghost, no killer, and the red splotches are just from when Sam dyed Millie's hair red.
Gone Home is a slow (and I mean sloooow) walk from room to room until you finally end up in the attic, find the last journal and the game ends. Woo. It's an anticlimactic slap in the face. You learn that your sister left the day before (or so) to be with her girlfriend, with your parents coming home the next day. Now you know that when they get home, they're not going to be excited and happy to see you, they're going to be worried about your missing sister. She ruined your homecoming (and it looks like she even ransacked the house before leaving).

    Pros:
+the house looks nice and lived in
+most objects in the house are interactive
    +mercifully short

    Cons:
-the main plot and most of the side stories are not very gripping
-the sister character (who the player is intended to connect to and sympathize with) is an unlikable ****
-the horror themes are completely out of place
-when going through the commentary, I realized the developers are annoying and unlikable too, go figure
-completely obscure hidden trophies that practically require a walkthrough to figure out

It's not 0/10 bad, but I can understand why people are leaving those reviews: it was such a huge let down. And all of the glowing reviews for it are not helping. It's also funny to me that the critic reviews are all generally positive with the lowest being around a 60/100 (seriously, IGN? A 9.5/10? And Gaming-Age.com gave it a perfect score? Jesus Christ). I'm glad I didn't pay anything for this and I feel bad for anyone who threw $20 down the drain for it. It took me under 2.5 hours to beat the game and get all the trophies. Not worth the price. If you can get it for free, it might be worth checking out, but make sure your expectations are low. Like, LOW low.

Within minutes it had me fully invested in the fates of these characters, Sam especially, and my interest in the story never faltered. My only complaint is with the ending, which I felt tonally came a bit out of nowhere, though it ultimately makes sense and will surely please many players.

The climax: Your lesbian girlfriend can't hang out with you for your High School Graduation because she joined the army and will be leaving for a post.
The Ending: Lesbian girlfriend can't bear to leave you and drops out of army to stay with you.

Entire story is narrated by the protagonist as she finds notes that remind her of what happened.

Gone Home is a story driven game in which you wander around your house after coming home from an overseas trip to find your family gone.
The story plays out when you pick up clues, 24 in total, which drive the narrative along. I found all but 1 of them on my first (and only) play through. After finding about half of them I figured out the story and kind of lost interest. For some reason I wanted to find out the family had been massacred or had bought it by murder suicide. I should've checked the ESRB rating before I played.
The story is actually kind of good, its very different however it is not really aimed a "Gamers" and it should have been marketed to angsty teenage girls, which I am not. I'm not kidding either, to a 34 year old male it was next to impossible to empathise with anything that happened in the game.
They also attempt to spin a supernatural tale into the story which ultimately falls flat (because it didn't end in the mutilation of the family) and was really just filler.
I think the only reason I persevered was because I was waiting for something good to happen. Y'know those movies you don't walk out of because you want to see if something "Good" will happen. Well Gone Home is like that.
Presentation-wise, it couldn't be more Indie if it tried, in fact I would be the same game with VGA graphics and made in the 80s. The sound is cool, especially the wind and thunder effects, the creaking floorboards and the other sounds the house makes add to the atmosphere however they also mislead the player into thinking that something creepy is going to happen.
Overall I simply cannot think of anyone I would recommend this game to, because I know no one within its core audience. I understand that in the marketing they couldn't go into plot details or no one would play it but they needed to find away to make it clear that the content was not going to appeal to 90% of gamers.
Its a shame it wasn't something very different because it could've been good.
It's not garbage but it isn't good either.

The game starts with very little information given to the player. You are presented with a black screen while you hear the protagonist’s answering machine message to her family. She, you, say that you’ve decided to take the cheap flight home from Paris so you would be arriving after midnight and would get a shuttle home. The scene fades in. You are standing on the front porch of a large, beautiful yet cryptic house while a storm rages on around you. There is a note on the front door from someone named “Sam” who you come to learn is your little sister. It is hard to parse out what exactly the note means at this point, but you are soon presented with your first puzzle as you notice the front door is locked when you try to enter. Once you find the key (it’s not too hard) you enter the house and it is now time to start piecing the narrative together..."

The game is nice, it has a nice atmosphere to it, and it got me wondering at all times "is this a horror thing or what?". But it isn't, it's just a girl walking around her house, searching for clues and keys only to find out her young sister run away with another girl, cause they were in love. Being in the lgbt community, I thought it was cute, but it was very linear and I totally saw it coming. It's "new" cause it's 1995 and being gay wasn't well seen back then, so it dwells into that as well, but you only get to listen to some audio journal thing, and everything you see are letters, drawings and your house, or well, the characters house.

It had a nice vibe, but it's not worth the money. If you can download it on pc for free or if you have ps plus, give it a go. It has an amazing ambiance and the details are amazing, but do not spend money on it.

Most of the things you find here are absolutely useless and the story is fairly linear. In essence, it's a point and click adventure about lesbians.

So far I've played a few games of this genre and I think Gone Home, despite its short duration, gives a good fight upon epic titles such as Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain or Life is Strange. Logically I'm not saying it's up to those great titles, but still it gives a fight.

I'll focus on the story, because in these kind of games you don't have to measure the graphics, it's not the purpose. Gradually we discover the thoughts of our sister through notes or diaries that we find around the house with a very good narration and great voice actresses (not going to spoiler anything). The house itself was really spooky and the atmosphere was remarkable, which gave me and my girlfriend in our first walkthrough a sense of tension as if something terrible had happened, and that is certainly what I thanked most.

Developers have managed to capture the essence of these games allowing us to interact with almost everything we see in the house, although it has no direct impact on the story in the vast majority of cases.

I played it with my girlfriend as I said before, her taking the controls at all times, enjoying together the exploration, making assumptions of what had happened and discovering the sad story of our little sister. (Little spoiler ahead, go to last paragraph if you want to skip it) The score that I would've given it is a 6 considering that the end seemed a bit anticlimactic, but my girlfriend would've scored it with an 8 considering that at that time (1995) was almost a taboo and not socially accepted, so for her the end seemed right. It is thus a 7.

If you really like these kind of games, sort of "story-telling", I suggest you try it out, it is short (about 2 or 3 hours of gameplay if you wander around picking up stuff) and you will enjoy it.

Absolutely nothing has changed from the PC release - if you want, check my profile for the review of that. It's abysmal. The critics have selective vision with this 'game', and that's why you see the gulf between honest user reviews and professional reviewers wanting to justify their career by pretending this is high art.

It's not. It's absolute trash. Avoid like the plague.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beyond disappointed. This game is nothing it appears to be. It's a lesbian love story. That's it. I'm 100% for the slightly modern idea of making weird games with cool graphics that are more of "an experience" than a game, and this "game" tries to achieve that, but it fails horribly. My first gripe was the fact that there are well over 100 items to pick up and look at that do absolutely nothing, like plain cups or pencils. Not only is this a game where literally all you can do is pick stuff up and walk around, so the stuff you pick up should be useful half the time, but also why on earth did the developers go through the effort of including so much worthless crap? You can open the dishwasher....to look at dishes...and pick some up...and that's all....it's so stupid.
My second gripe was that the story revealed through notes, letters, audio logs, and so forth is terribly uninteresting. teenage forbidden lesbian romance, an old house that used to have some shady guy living there who liked hidden passages, but the end result is nothing. The house is not haunted, there's not some creepy torture chamber in the basement, there's not a dead body, there isn't some dark secret, there's....nothing. Everywhere you go the whole experience revolves around your rebellious sister Sam and her lesbian lover Lonnie, even when you find cool hidden passages, nope, nothing interesting, just where same and Lonnie would hide out and post teenage crap on the walls. By the end i just wanted it to be over already. The last room in the attic I walked straight to the end and picked up the last journal entry and the game was over with a brief audio log. I'm sure there were a few things in that room I didn't look at that maybe explained a few things, but i guarantee it didn't explain everything. I'm sick of modern story writers not writing a complete story and then being like "oh it's interpretive, you figure it out, you decide what happened." That's garbage. Finish your crappy story. Sooo many times in the game I ended up saying things like "Why? Why is this here? What would they do this?" The majority of questions are left unanswered, and all your left with is a lesbian love story. I honestly feel bad for people who paid for this game, mine was free from PSN. Voice acting, visuals, and controls were all fine, which makes it a shame that there's no story worth experiencing.

There should be new categories for things like this so they are not listed on the game section of stores, because that is simply false advertising. And the amount of people saying "go play cod if you don't like it" also need a slap because if you class this as anything even resembling a game you should be slapped vigorously.

Terrible story mixed with a dull atmosphere, if you hate Young Adult fiction and all it stands for then you will likely hate this. The writing is insipid, the gameplay non-existent; flash games are far better and more immersive, and the price is a joke. Avoid at all costs, the hype around it is very artificial and 'art' it is not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a teenager, I constantly feel as if no one understands me, as if I was a maze that needs to be understood, discovered. The game Gone Home, due to the situation I mentioned above, made me feel quite engaged with the game. The story in this game revolves around Katie Greenbriar, a young woman who is returning to a new home after a year of traveling around Europe only to discover she is alone and her younger sister, Sam Greenbriar, is gone. As you go through the house, which you know nothing about because Katie has been gone for a year and has never lived in the house, you discover that you must find what happened to Sam. Just like my constant feeling of “being a maze”, you have to travel through the house and discover different clues about the Greenbriar’s new life. Gone Home is an interactive game in which you discover different clues, presented through Sam’s journals.

However, Gone Home is not like most video games. It does not hold many fantastic or aggressive elements, mostly because it is a narrative game. Through out the game, you discover Sam’s story, attempting to discover why she left. The use of Sam’s journal entries as “achievements” helped developed an emotional tie with a character you never met, creating a more engaging experience with the player.

Yet, one of the most interesting characteristics of this game is Sam’s story. Sam is a teenager that is new in town, constantly left alone, constantly ignored since her confidante, her older sister Katie, “left” her. However, regardless of the cliché of finally finding love, shown through Lonnie De Santo to rescue her from her solitude, Sam allows the game to be interesting and constantly keeping you on your feet, not knowing where you would find the next part of her story. Just like most teenagers, Sam is in a constant fight with her family and her feelings, making her story highly relatable, mainly because it shows that one’s journey to self-discovery is not all roses and rainbows. Sam’s road to herself is much represented through the house, that seems unorganized and old at first glance but then becomes a mess that just needs some tender love and care. As Sam’s story gets more complicated, so does the path you have to follow. Gone Home uses Sam as a representation of life, since she had to go through hardships and obstacles to find her happiness, even if it is momentary.

Despite Sam’s story being the protagonic storyline, it is not thee only one in Gone Home. The story of Oscar Masan, Mr. Greenbriar’s uncle who left the Greenbriar family the house where the games takes place, is one of the parallel stories of the game. Mr. Masan was a lonely man living in a mansion away from town, seeming social and capable of having a fun time with everyone in the community, yet being truly and completely alone. You never truly know the story behind Mr. Mason’s solitude, and if he is truly a ghost within the house like Sam thinks, however, the various clues scattered around the house make me believe that the reason why Mr. Masan was so lonely was because the house was his only true, constant companion, making him completely absorb himself within the house, and, in some way, making him be consumed by the house.

Moreover, Mr. Masan’s story is not the only parallel story in Gone Home. The story of the Greenbriar family, specifically the relationship of the Greenbriar parents Janice and Terrence, is another important secondary element of the game. Terrence and Janice Greenbriar are a couple that seem to struggle in their relationship and I infer it has to do with the fact Terrence is a not so successful author, making Janice work harder, increasing the distance between her and her husband and, consequently, with her daughter. Again, we are able to see just how everything seems to turn to Sam and her story; however, the constant mentioning of the conflict between the Greenbriars is another fuel to the story that makes Gone Home even more relatable to modern audiences, since, sadly, parental conflict seems to be more and more common.

Lastly, another important factor of Gone Home is the aesthetic of the house. The enormous house in Gone Home is dark and empty, two characteristics you wouldn’t normally associate with family homes. However, these two characteristics really play with the game, since this video game constantly highlights the emptiness in Sam’s life and the darkness that suddenly surrounds it. The aesthetic of the house represents Sam by being that factor that everyone can tell is wrong, since Sam often hid her true feelings, something the house can’t do. Also, the aesthetic of the house aids the fueling of the parallel stories. For example, Mr. Masan died in the house all by himself, not having anyone, in the dark emptiness of his home. Similarly, the Greenbriar parents constantly argue and suffer difficulties in their marriage, represented by all the packed boxes since they don’t talk about their problems and repress them, like the boxes do.

As a fan of the walking simulator genre, I found Gone Home to be a complete and total disappointment. This was the first of it's kind, and it's been utterly surpassed by every game in this genre that's come after it. Woefully short, this game has an achievement for completion in under a minute - I'm not sure that this is something the developers should be flaunting. At any rate, the game can be easily completed, even with a thorough search, in considerably under three hours.

Puzzles are extremely basic, consisting of two "solve the combination" type puzzles - and that's it. Not that puzzles are what anyone who loves the walking simulator genre plays them for. The main reason to play these games is for the story - which again, in Gone Home is completely lacking. There's no sense of tension or excitement, nothing untoward happens, and the entire plot can be figured out in the first few of the games journal entries. I spent the entire game waiting for a denouement that never arrived. In the end - it just fizzles out. It's just all just extremely dull and pedestrian.

If you've never player one of these kinds of games before, and you're looking to dip your toe into this genre, instead of this - pick up the excellent "Everybody's Gone To The Rapture", or "The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter" - both of which have more emotional and deeper stories than Gone Home, coupled with better graphics and far longer play times.

The experience works because of the well crafted environment, strategic placement of clues, excellent writing, wonderful audio, and immersive sounds and music. I really do believe the negative reviews of Gone Home are morally wrong. Gaming isn't about twitch shooting or platform jumping. It's not about managing stats and collecting upgrades. Gaming is about having experiences. Gone Home provides the kind of experience few games offer. My PS4 needs more works like this.

As noted above, I really do not want to consider Gone Home a game. There are no points. There are no branching paths. You are literally let loose in a house to explore at your own pace and make your own conclusions. Imagine if Gone Home were not a game, and instead you paid admission to rummage through a house looking for clues as to why no one is home. Gone Home is the digital version of that kind of experience.

Caveat on price: I downloaded this game for "free" through PS Plus. (I used quoates because PS Plus ain't free). However, knowing now how wonderful the experience is, I would have paid $10 to play it. The experience is really that good. This is one of those quality versus quantity experiences. Firstly, if you don't like games who's sole purpose is to tell a story and pull you into the narrative, this game is not for you. There's no shooting, no conflict and you are basically left to explore.

And explore I did. It's not a huge game, there's not that many rooms and not an endless amount to interact with. But what is there gives the gamer a real sense of a family that 'something has occurred with' ...no spoilers here!

With that, comes a real tenderness to the game. Early on you hear a disturbing voice mail, with thunder constantly giving the gamer a sense of dread and isolation, the remains of everything you find feels as melancholic and once-meaningful. There's an underlying heartache at the centre of the story that as it unravels, left a big impression on me.

The voice acting, alike Firewatch, is excellent. It feels unscripted and natural, like any old family. This is such a huge part of the immersion of Gone Home.

This game won't be for everyone. I completed it in just over 2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Firewatch is still the better game, as the character interaction / script is even better. But the sense of dread, loss and melancholic bliss I got from Gone Home will sit with me for a long long while.

Those people rating is ZERO just didn't read up on what the game was pre purchase, it is what it is, I don't buy NFL games and cry that it's not FIFA, read before you buy people!!!

Basically, you have to find 24 objects triggering a story. The story is so cliché that you will probably give up before the end. You can finish the game without finding all the clues, just find 2 keys and you're done.

I understand that the 85 Metascore from critics and the hype comes from the fact that it's about lesbian love and parents not understanding, and the military not accepting homos. Blah Blah Blah. The usual stuff. Even if I agree that it is a important subject to fight for, this "game" was not a good way to do it. I'm happy I didn't pay for it.

The worst part---between the constant cheer leading from the gaming media, and the slightly mysterious first moments, you are led to believe "Gone Home" has something exciting to offer. Then you wait......and walk.....and peruse useless drivel.....and slowly come to realize nothing is going to happen.

Items are strewn about the house that hint at what is supposed to be interesting details about an unknown protagonist and their family, but the more i found, the less i cared.

Those hoping for a supernatural or lively event to turn this mundane stroll around an empty house into something more, will be disappointed. Its never meant to be more, yet it has been continuously trumpeted as a worthwhile experience. Have you ever wandered your parents house while they were away.....in fact, my personal adventures, arriving at my parents empty house, have been far more interesting, but i would feel dishonest making any one of them a purchasable product.

I dont understand why "Gone Home" exists. I dont understand why it has been propped up by game's journalists. I dont understand what anyone who has lived in the 21st century gets out of the pedestrian tale. The vapid, predictable ending only solidified my irritation and confusion over the "game's" continued acclaim.

If you are looking for anything other than a detailed reminder of what items a home might of been littered with in the 90's.....you wont find it in "Gone Home"

There is very little in "Gone Home", and nothing that isnt taken to far more creative and inspired places in the latest teen vampire romance movie.....

    Exactly.

Amazing but short experience! Fantastic story telling and clever design, this is a game not only for those 'old' enough to have experienced the good old point and click adventures, but also for fans of exploration or just a good mistery story. The only negative aspect i see is it's length.

Unless you are one of these kids who think Playstation invented videogames and call 'walking

this "game" seems to be a result of SJWs absurd demands actually being met. if you're old enough to remember "choose your adventure" books - well, apparently, those were games.

basically, there gameplay is.... reading. the plot is as stereotypically SJW as possible - and for added irony, i guess the riot grrl movement just wasn't feminist/feminazi enough... so they had to add

if you're reading this, you're playing a game, too. because games are just words now.

Its a game disguising itself as a mystery and then telling a lesbian love story. Its 2 hours of listening to tapes of a girl falling in love with another girl. If you are an SJW or like dumb indie teen love stories then get it, but probably even you will be left dissapointed, since it explains absolutely nothing. I don't know that I'd say this game is worth a full $20 just because it is super short, but it definitely is worth playing. It's not a traditional game, but it is enjoyable. It's a simple little exploration set and it's fun to poke around in it. Best part about it was I found my feelings toward the house your exploring slowly do a 180 as you learn more about it.

    If you want a pleasant

If you want a pleasant surprise, pick this up. But not at full price. Wait for a sale. It's worth $7.50 or so.

This isn't actually a game. It's more like a visual novel. You walk around and find things to read. That's it. No gameplay, no mobs, no weapons, no score, nothing.

Gone home is a beautiful story told with talent. The total immersion and storytelling brings a sense of renewal in the world of video games. Unfortunately, its lifespan is too short: two hours are enough to see the end. This console port is, by the way, excellent.

It’s a shame that Gone Home is a bit of a non-starter. It has a lot of potential; the game is genuinely captivating whilst you’re playing it – it’s just unfortunate that it leaves you so disappointed once you’ve reached its conclusion. The human story it tries to tell is relatable, but it’s a story that’s so ordinary it’s barely even worth telling. By all means, play Gone Home for the exploration; for the 90’s nostalgia and for its down-to-Earth quirks, but don’t go into it expecting anything mindblowing. Expect a grounded story about a typical family and you won’t be disappointed, but anything else will leave you feeling rather underwhelmed.

Don’t look at its brevity with a frown: Gone Home is a hugely important game with something meaningful to say. [April 2016, p74]
