Let me start by acknowledging how underrated this game is. It is the definition of Hidden Indie Gem.

Let me start by acknowledging how underrated this game is. It is the definition of Hidden Indie Gem.

Its quite hard to judge everything separately, because all the elements of the game are intertwined very perfectly. The music goes hand-in-hand with the level designs, and it defines itself as more than just a side-scrolling shooter. My only problem with the game is that some of the levels feel a little similar, but the feel the music provides minimizes this problem very dramatically.

The smallest and simplest of elements make a world of difference, like how you can grab enemies, which also gets rid of the level similarity.

The voice cast is also amazing. Nolan North, John DiMaggio, Sam Riegel, Eric Bauza and James Dirschberger do a fantastic job in all of their roles and add an extra layer of comedy to the game and its story.

Something that must be commended is the constant communication between players and the developer. This is mainly done through their TikTok Channel 'Markmakesgames.' This sets a massive example because the recommendation of a Mario Maker style level designer is in development.

As a fan of shoot-em-ups, rhythm games, and crude stand-up, Freedom Finger feels almost like it was tailor-made for me. The game is a solid shooter wrapped up in unique engines and wild aesthetics, and was a joy to play through for the most part.

Freedom Finger is a horizontal shooter that incorporates a humorous storyline and a hard charging soundtrack. This triple threat coalesces into a game that will keep horizontal shooter fans invested for some time.

Freedom Finger is best enjoyed when stripped of the jokes that beat themselves over the player’s heads. An annoying cast of characters that just can’t seem to shut up and bad political jokes that are tired before they fall flat get in the way of what makes this particular shmup really cook. The soundtrack is fantastic on its own but the way the levels and enemies engage with the different songs is really unique and offers its own special challenges that more than pick up the slack left behind what amounts to be a less pointed version of MAD Magazine’s style of humor.
